I like that you showed the Sony images first. It really killed my bias for preferring chunkier lenses. I find it hard to take the Sony 35mm 1.8 seriously because it’s so small but you have showed that’s its optically solid and you get such similar images. Creating attractive images is much more about the composition and post processing, waaay more than about using a particular lens
"you get such similar images" - says someone who hasn't tried f1.2 yet, buddy, you get absolutely stellar images with 1.2, but it's fkn tank indeed, and you wanna have a f1.8 backup, but once you start shooting with 1.2 you immediately forget about weight and size, once you see the images! Cheers
You can definitely tell the difference. Look at the bokeh at the 1:13 mark, harsh bokeh is a dead giveaway it's Sony 35 1.8. Meanwhile, Sigma has the smoothest bokeh I've ever seen in a 35mm lens.
So Chris, what I am taking away from this is despite the Sigma 35 f1.2 being the clear winner optically you still will be reaching for the Sony35 f1.8 in most everyday situations and not regretting any real loss of IQ. Thanks for your honest evaluation.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Seriously, thanks for making this review and sharing your thoughts, Chris! Really looking forward to your upcoming review/thoughts about the 20 1.8 vs 24 1.4 GM! Stay safe, my man.
www.sigma-global.com/en/download/lenses/firmware/popups/a019_35_12/ ( But I admit I for myself dont understand if a) looks like it dates much earlier then when I bought it. b) the download-page is not helpfull regarding A7 cameras..maybe because not necessary after all ?
I was wondering the same thing. I have the Sigma 1.2 and it still flickers on both the A7III and A9. I've reached out to Sigma several times, but no help :(
The purple fringing on the 1.2 I find really annoying especially in the eye highlights, did you ever notice this? (Only happens at 1.2) I think I’m going to take it back and swap
hey man, I'm not Chris))) but I tested Sony 35mm 1.4 and Sigma 35mm 1.4 - Sigma is better and cheaper! I just happen to bump into Sigma 35mm f1.2 used in mint condition for good money.
Point being the sigma is definitely nicer, but if you looked at those first images and thought “oh I really need the 1.2” then you obviously don’t haha
Johanes Joshua ummmm it’s interesting for sure. Definitely has a special look to it. Personal I probably prefer the Canon 50 1.2 lol even though it’s pretty average optically.
Thank you for this review. I did think when you presented the 1.2 first, "Wait, that's not that creamy for a 1.2." So I caught your trap. : ) The actual 1.2 does look better than the 1.8 but I don't think I can handle the size and the weight increase. The 1.8 is smaller, lighter, and the photos are still great too. This video did give me food for thought, however. I need to think about it more.

That twist in the middle of the video!:))) I had to go back and look at the photos again!:))))

Thank you!!
Thanks for another great review. Hope you take a look at the new 20mm 1.8 sometime. Cheers
Ive had it with me for a week, video coming soon :)

Yep thats pretty much right

I have the Sigma 35mm 1.2. But I cant see to find the latest firmware for it.

Having a 1.8 or carry basically a 70-200 for 1.2. My only gripes with the sony 1.8s is the lack of weather sealing.
Sorry, but the 1.2 stills definitely look sharper. Video-wise, it makes no difference to me.
The purple fringing on the 1.2 I find really annoying especially in the eye highlights, did you ever notice this? (Only happens at 1.2) I think I’m going to take it back and swap
I have a request. Can you do review on the sigma 35mm 1.2 with its new firmware. I wanna see if video auto focus is better
It’s heaps better yeah. Been using it again lately
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer sweet!! Hopefully it fixes the chopping for far focus pull
Can you compare sigma 35 f1.2 with sigma 40 f1.4 ?
Hey Chris, if you were to pick between the Sony 35mm 1.4 and the Sigma 35mm 1.2, what would you go for?
hey man, I'm not Chris))) but I tested Sony 35mm 1.4 and Sigma 35mm 1.4 - Sigma is better and cheaper! I just happen to bump into Sigma 35mm f1.2 used in mint condition for good money.
Haha that threw me off, I genuinely thought they were all from the sigma, happy that I don't need more than 1.8 🤙🏼
Jorden Young it’s the best way I thought I could get the point across haha.
Point being the sigma is definitely nicer, but if you looked at those first images and thought “oh I really need the 1.2” then you obviously don’t haha
You mentioned that the 1.2 flickering has been addressed via firmware; I have not found any firmware update for the lens. Could you elaborate?
I was told the lens had been updated when I picked it up from the store. I’ll ask the shop and get back
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer simple solution; try recording video at 120p and f1.2. and see flickers when played back on anything other than your camera.
Hi Chris! I just want to ask. Do you think the lens has the same character with 50mm f/1.2L from canon? Thanks!
Johanes Joshua ummmm it’s interesting for sure. Definitely has a special look to it. Personal I probably prefer the Canon 50 1.2 lol even though it’s pretty average optically.
maestro Chris, what should we do when the couple star to cancelinng the weddings? Any idea? Thanks
Tough one man. We’ve been talking about it in photographer groups here. Will make a video on it soon but we should all be bracing for it 100%
Nice comparison. The video at 1:30 is that also with the Sony 35mm f1.8? Handheld with in-body stabilization?
No that is the Sigma and yes handheld :)
Checky, but well played.. Ill keep the 35mm f1.8... Thanks

Dude ... how much weight have you lost!
Haha about 7kgs, so busy I dont have time to eat! Plus you know.. probably stress from CVOID-19 worries
For video sony 35 1.8 better
