      Apart from that isn't how shotguns are supposed to work. What a shotgun shell actually does is to throw out a lot of small balls. People do not die from the balls as they mostly get stuck in the skin and do not penetrate very deep. Shotgun shells kill through the shock when those balls hit the body. It will cause vibration that travels right into the body which causes a disruption in the body, which causes organs to fail. The same kind of effect why explosives in water is lethal. If you actually want a shotgun shell to penetrate the target you are going to have to use a slug or sabot shell so it become more like a normal rifle round.
      It is also not very likely that a shotgun shell can blow of limbs and stuff. You require to be rather thin, small or hit a peice of someones body at an angle to allow the balls to actually blow off chunks. If you are right at the breach, maybe you can blow off chuncks. If you shoot people at range with a shotgun and a normal shell. You are not going to blow of chunks as that isn't how the shells work.

    • @austinblake55
      @austinblake55 2 года назад +124

      @@Cloud_Seeker bro, at short range those balls are still in a tight spread, a wall of lead. You can literally take an arm off, or a "chunk" of body. The use of chokes and longer barrels increase the spread range. While at decent distances it will definitely not penetrate fully, you'd be left with a dangling arm at best close range

    Another feature the Germans hated about this weapon was the lack of a safety disconnect in the Model 1897, which is a feature used in almost all modern shotguns that require you to squeeze the trigger after pumping the shotgun.... without it, you can just hold the trigger and just pump the shotgun to fire it, one skilled enough could empty the weapon in seconds. You mean: Seeing an enemy soldier rapidly rocking the slide on his shotgun to get that mushed paper cartridge out, while trying to stuff one or two fresh ones in at a time, to a maximum of five... and you shoot him with 10 rounds of 9mm over the mangeld bodies of two of your comrades?
      The shotgun was more a weapon of psychological warfare than an actual thread. The very few casualties is cost were brutally disfigured. But you only had five rounds of paper cartridges, which mushed up quickly in the damp conditions of the trenches, and reloading is very slow.
      An SMG was more effective. But less frightening.

Same with mustard gas, the first time it was encountered, it was scary and effective but the opposing side quickly found ways to either mask up against it or see it coming a mile away and move out of the way. I think they could tell from the fact that all the flies or mosquitoes or some birds would seem to "migrate" suddenly, they realize they were escaping the mustard gas and moved with them. Shotguns were incredibly effective and didn't have the shortcomings as the flamethrower and mustard gas had.

    The goal in war is not necessarily to kill the oppenent but to make him unable to keep on fighting. In fact a wounded opponent is better than a dead one, because in the time they are busy rescuing him, they do not shoot at you. On top of that the Hague convention bans weapons that cause unnecessary harm. That and a better effect on hard targets is the reason militaries use full metal jackets in their small arms and not buckshot.
    And if that doesn't convince you, you probably can not hope to be taken prisoner if the Germans catch you with a shotgun (Not by order - That was while threatened to the US never given, but by vigilantism).
    The stances of both Germany and the US however did not change. The US is still sporting some and Germany, while having some in their military only allows them for door breeching.

    • @Eleazar73

      Yeah. Shotguns = killing animals or guarding prisoners. Hence full metal jacket is "within the rules" cuz a wounded soldiers stretching your logistics/infrastructure thin, medics, medical supplies to care for the WIA, beds for injured troops.

      Yeah, seeing it in the first place is the hard part!

      The iron sights only sniper mode is still in the game. It’s quite fun. I forgot the name of it, I think it was “back to basics” or something. But every class could use iron sight sniper rifles in that mode, which was accurate, since most of WW1 was fought with bolt action rifles.

    One of my favorite memories in Battlefield 1 was me trying to rally my squad with the whistle. There was so much machine gun fire you couldn't hear anything else. My whistle barely came through over the top of the noise on my own headset. Then, I got sniped while I tried to sound off the third time.
    This shit was just cool.

    Some armchair historian help me out here. Why didn’t the Germans just bring out their own shotguns? Certainly they had heard of and had shotguns.
    Edit: Never mind, I looked it up myself. The traditional pump action trench shotgun was developed by the US during World War I whereas before that it was simply “buck and ball “or break barrel.

    • @Srae17

      Because they cannot.
      Issuing shotguns might only put a strain on their logistics.

      Development aside, they tried to get the use of shotguns in war banned as a war crime. Issuing them to their own troops would have made those requests seem somewhat ridiculous.

      The pump action shotgun design is a bit older than that, created about twenty years or so before the start of WW1. The truth is the shotguns weren't all that common in the trenches and the Germans only complained because they wanted to deflect from the fact that they were using chemical warfare.

    • @cheshire4856
      @cheshire4856 2 года назад +1

      That is a Winchester 1897, WWI started in 1914, the US got involved in 1917. Pump action shotguns had been used in the Philippines, Mexico, and possibly Cuba, but don't quote me on that, well before they were used on the Western Front.

    Yes they were called trench sweeps because it was very easy to maneuver within the trenches with the shotgun making it a very deadly weapon and very effective at clearing out the trenches.
    Another reason they hated the shotguns was because during World War I and I believe World War II the German grenades were built so sturdily that when they were thrown into the allied trenches soldiers from the Midwest who were accustomed to shooting wild game such as pheasants and pigeons would shoot the grenades mid air and they would fly back into enemy territory and then detonate.
    It caused so many casualties on the German side that the German military put out statements saying that any combatant found carrying even the ammunition of a shotgun would not be held as prisoners of war but rather executed immediately. These threats never really paid out for the Germans as no records show of any shotgunners being captured during the conflicts.

    • @Lightally16
      @Lightally16 2 года назад +6

      Couldn't capture them with shotguns because to do that, they would have to get closer, where they least wanted to be if someone was armed with a shotgun. I imagine if they did get that close, they wouldn't be for long

      I’m calling BS on the grenade feat. C&Rsenal showed just how difficult even hitting a stick grenade was when using an authentic WWI-era Model 10 with buckshot (which is what they would’ve been using as opposed to the birdshot they would’ve used for fowl) and Mae knew the grenade was coming. The times she did hit it, she only stopped its momentum. Not once did start flying in a different direction.
      Trench guns in general also had quite a few reliability issues due to the paper cartridges troops were being issued and very little if any brass cased shells made it to the front by war’s end. Some troops apparently remedied this by either trading their paper shells for brass with locals or coating their paper shells with candle wax.
      To top it all off, from what I’m seeing, less than 23, 000 trench guns (3,500 Model 10’s and a little over 19,000 Model 1897’s) were issued to a military that totaled approximately 4.7 million by war’s end, with a number of the guns being used for guard duty. The gun protest was a German political move like how they made propaganda footage using the Lee Enfield’s magazine cutoff to make dumdum rounds.

      were it not for the american reinforcements showing up, the allies likely would have sued for some form of peace. The Americans provided enough relief to successfully push the germans back into germany and end the war.

    • @MrDeadlysirius
      @MrDeadlysirius Год назад +1

      Not to mention “years late” is a little but of a misrepresentation, when it was a European conflict that only involved Europe and its possessions. Americans wanted to stay out of the war, and who could blame them. But when they were dragged in by the sinking of the lusitania and the zimmerman telegraph, they certainly helped finish it.
