The umpiring in that Hou vs Chi game was the worst of the postseason to this point. The umpire was so inconsistent, and it was happening to both teams. Then the Grandal play. White Sox fans won’t say it was horse shit, but we ALL know that call was horse shit.
The funny thing is the Rays benefitted from this exact call in 2019 in Toronto. In that game it was even more sketch since instead of just hitting the player like it did Renfroe, Pham swatted at the ball to knock it out of play.
Love how Jimmy knows the money maker for Jomboy Media the moment something goes wrong... He knows this needs to be recorder because there will be a breakdown.
The fact that the rule doesn’t specify intentional vs unintentional is pretty nuts. They’re definitely gonna change that in the off-season or we’ll see outfielder smacking the ball into the stands rather than fielding it next year
The key word is "deflected" in the rule book. I imagine it would be pretty hard to purposely deflect a ball out of play and make it look unintentional. The rule doesn't allow for a slippery slope considering that this is literally never happened in a game before. The rule doesn't need to be changed.
Of course intent matters, but it's handled under a different rule. It would be no different than when an outfielder mistakenly thinks he just caught the 3rd out of the inning and tosses the ball into the stands. In that case, the runners get extra bases from the time of the INTENTIONAL toss/bump/whatever of the ball into the stands. That's why intent is not in the MLB rule, but IS added to the Umpire's handbook, so they remember to enforce both.
I'm not surprised they didn't call Grandal out. Those umpires were shady and it was blatantly obvious they were calling the game in the White Sox favor. There's no winning when you're playing both the opposing team and the umpires.
How about the 1-2 fastball to Grandal in the 3rd that was belly button high over the heart of the plate, that Hallion somehow missed?!.. That cost the Astros 5 runs.. Smh..
Biased Astros Fan, but I have a few thoughts 1) That missed strike 3 before the 2 run bomb was essentially a 5 run swing. I have seen people post this umpire's stats and he is ranked near the worst in terms of accuracy. How do they not just have the best umpires officiate the playoffs? That would make sense right? 2) That said, Dusty Baker made two crucial errors. Yimi Garcia already proved he did not have it earlier in the playoffs. He brought him in to give up a 3 run bomb... Then he keeps him in the next inning... Just wow. Maybe this is why his contract has not been renewed. ' 3) As for the play at Home, I don't feel like that impacted the outcome of the game, so I could care less.
My biggest gripe about the playoffs are these bs 1 or 2pm start times during the work week. How does playing these games when most people are working help promote the game of baseball? This is beyond stupid.
In the second inning with 2 outs on a full count, cease threw a knuckle curve catching the full zone to alvarez but it was called ball 4. This led to a 3 run inning allowing stros to take the lead and cease to be taken out after 1 2/3. Both teams were screwed by the ump.
The umpire for the Astros and White Sox game was definitely getting paid under the table he had bad cal after bad call against the Astros he literally cost the Astros the game. The league needs to investigate him.
He did not cost them the game. Both teams had bad calls against them and some are to delousional to see it. Astros lost. DEAL WITH IT NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR CRYING
As an Astros fan, if Grandal made that run knowing/hoping the call would go his way if he got hit, that's just impressive. It's obviously horseshit, but also heads up baseball. If the game had been closer, I would have called for his head though.
It'd kind of disappointing that Trevor doesn't even know the rules of the sport he played at the highest level. This play has always been a ground rule double.

The whole way to first the runner establishes his own baseline. The runner’s lane is only to determine if the runner interfered with the catch at first. Where the runner is has no bearing on a ball thrown to home plate.
@@gamingonwheels2502 incorrect. The line to the right of the first baseline is only relevant to a fielder fielding a thrown ball to first base. There is no requirement or rule that says the runner has to stay to the right of the first baseline. As far as interference goes, that has nothing to do with a runner’s lane and is strictly a judgement call by the umpires and they didn’t call it.
@@gamingonwheels2502 no, he's got I right. For that to be interference, he would have had to intentionally interfere (and running where he is doesn't count. He would have to chicken wing or something like that)

And I thought the controversy was going to be when the Red Sox got the call when the runner came off the bag and was called out despite the fielder not touching him at any point when he was off the bag.
