The singer, Riley Pinkerton, is a massive Black Sabbath fan, and it shows. Apparently she was mainly into folk as a teenager, until someone let her listen to Black Sabbath, and that sent her on this path. I love how intentionally retro this is. I suspect they dug up a tape camera from the 1980s to get video this grainy.
Yeah, she looks like she stepped out of the pages of Heavy Metal (the magazine if you remember that). Discovered them a few weeks back, that their videos look like they were done on tatty old VHS tapes by high school students trying to be cool in the early 80's, certainly gives them a defining look and feel. It takes a LOT of effort to make a video appear that hammy. Early stoner metal vibes, the singer sounds reminiscent of the singer from Curved Air (early 70's band) or possibly a young Grace Slick. This music nerd approves.
The video is pretty striking, Riley has created quite a look for herself there. But her guitar and songwriting are also excellent as are the band in general. I can't recommend their album highly enough and am really pleased to see they will be touring Europe in 2025
Discovered Castle Rat two weeks ago, completely fell in love with the heavy guitars, crazy visuals and insanely good singer! True music with a soul. Great analysis on your part, very interesting video, thanks!
