been a massive fan since i heard your work on Four Higher. it's a rare thing to be such a talented musician AND a truly gifted educator. you make me rethink how i look at the bass with each new lesson. after playing for almost 40 years, it was a most joyous kick in the ass to stumble on your lessons and see the instrument a different way. thanks for that!

These permutations through all the modes become some crazy vocabulary and rhythm especially with the 3 & 4 note patterns

This is a great lesson, Rich...! I've only recently picked up the bass again (after having had a long break from playing any instrument) and my passion for playing was re-ignited by chance...that chance coming in the form of stumbling across one of your other videos, so thank you for that. I totally agree with your comment about enjoying the most simple of exercises. Trying to progress too quickly can often come at the expense of good technique, with clarity, control and articulation losing out to the desire for speed. I believe that a lot can be learned from simply holding and playing just one note; giving yourself the opportunity to truly feel the string under your finger, playing the note hard, soft and everything in between, listening to the sound of the note as it swells and slowly decays, before moving to another fret, etc. Don't get me wrong, practice sessions should include a number of different approaches, but I think that much can be gained from becoming ahem..."intimate"...with your instrument; respect the note, people...! :-D

Thanks for the great video, Rich! I love your style and your teaching techniques! Articulation is important in getting one's own sound. If you get a chance, could you add vibrato, trills, slides, and "shakes" to the mix?

I was wanting to ask if a person cannot play by ear now or just very little,and is no pro, or studio sessions player or anything like that, and never plans on being one 🤔I they play is at other people's homes or at church, and that is all they will be playing at,should they go ahead and study music??and will they be chained to the music stand forever and never be able to play completely by ear at all??I was just wanted know okay thank you so much 🙂
If you're fine with the playing opportunities you have now, I don't think there's a need for you to enroll in a formal program. That said, I do suggest you try to learn as much as you can by playing along with recordings...and...well...watching my videos. 😉😁

Scotty, I'm in the same boat. I don't play professionally or any band situation but have played in the band for a couple of churches in the past. A lot of church music, today, is written in kind of a lead sheet form, not regular sheet music.They just put the chord name, like Am, G, Bb, above the lyrics where you should play them. You fill in until the next note change. For me, knowing the location of the notes on the fret board and the finger patterns for the major and minor triads (root, third, fifth, octave) went a long way. The types of things Rich is sharing are great and will build on that, enabling you to add some flavor and spice to your playing. Keep watching @The Brown'stone with Rich Brown. Just my 2 cents.
