Beginner bass player here! I’m a big heavy metal guy and learning these triads backward and forward is going to make it so much easier to write riffs. Great exercise for all genres, I’d say. Great work as always, Mr Brown.
So I've been working your beginner's playlist, currently at lesson #5, and this is such a great deeper dive into the topic. I've also been wanting to get a better understanding of the fretboard, and have been struggling to find a mapping system that didn't make my eyes glaze over. This etude makes a lot of sense for a beginner to learn the fretboard and develop muscle memory, which is exactly what I want/need. I'll probably just practice this exercise for a week or two before I move on to lesson #6.
This youtube channel is key for bass players willing to truly improve their skills. Fundamental concepts are discussed here, with the right level of details.
I like these bass lesson videos although I am not a bassist. I'm a saxophonist who was told by a certain teacher that there's a connection between bass and alto saxophone, even today I don't know what he meant but I am continuing learning how the bass guitar works. As I follow these lessons I'm starting to realise that the bass is outlining all chords in a song and as a saxophonist I should listen to the bassist. Later i learned that the greatest jazz alto saxophonist, Charlie Parker was trained by a guitarist to fully understand his saxophone and how to improvise. That's why I am watching and stadyings all Rich brown bass videos because they are full of wisdom. Thanks.
Really enjoying Rich's way of explaining things, making it simple yet beautiful. His lessons have really improved my playing, tremendously. Just sent one of my friends, another long-time frustrated bassist, to this channel. I hope he finds it equally rewarding, and fun!
feel like this rearranged a bunch of stuff I knew in a very musical way. In some cases the second octave is best served by a different shape, i think, have fun mixing and matching.
This is exactly why I love the Nashville Number system. It is like it was made for the bass. You start seeing these shapes on the fretboard and can play anything anywhere on the neck. Love your lessons, you are a great teacher.
Thank you Rich! These lessons are great. After playing bass for 32 yrs and only playing by "ear", i finally start to understand theory! I really like this approach!
I love you Rich! Your appreciation of beauty is inspiring. Keep doing what you're doing---which is adding to the beauty of the world. Always a noble (and much needed) endeavor.
I’ve bn searching for the right tutorial for basics for awhile, and this channel is amazing. Clearly explained. So here I am at Triads Part 1. Really excited
Thank you Mr Brown. I wanna just say "Thanks Coach" : )) These lessons are so thoughtful, well presented, and valuable. Very glad to have found your channel and wisdom on here. Thank you and god bless
Greatest lesson. Have you done a lesson yet where you show us how to take this information and use it practically to make our own bass lines with ? I think that would be a huge help.
Mr. Brown I have really enjoyed finding your channel. I thought I knew about triads, but you’re such a great teacher and I got some new ideas from this. I think I will be making a donation.
I am just a regular person and nobody special, and living in a very small town, I really dig your video lessons and the way you present them and explain them so well!!!!!! thank you so much 💙
Another great lesson. I had to turn on my amp and play along for this one! First time I learned about triads was with Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Zephyr Song" . A lot of Frusciantes playing is about triads, and so is mine now too! Many guitarists ask my how I play all these simple, beautiful chords. The limitation of 4 strings can enhance the actual musicality sometimes. Looking forward to the next vid.
Hey Rich i love your content! Been playing self taught bass for 25 years and still learning so much from you. Could i request after your lessons to add in a little 30 second +/- jam using the content of the lesson to demonstrate the technique?
All your teachings are awesome Sir. But please I want to ask how to develop faster finger for both hands as a biginner. I would love to know if there's any exercise on that. Thank you Sir.
Thank you so much for providing this learning platform. Your easy-going and calm demeanor make it easier for me to grasp your instruction. Great pace in delivery as well!!
Rich, I don't know if this comparison has been made yet but after watching 5-6 of your videos today I'm getting strong impressions that you're the Bob Ross of bass instruction. I hope that comes across as the compliment it is intended to be. I appreciate your passion, demeanor, and skill. Thanks for sharing. Happy new subscriber.
I love this. You're the 3rd person to make the same comparison! So...I guess it's a thing now. LOL! Thanks very much for subscribing, Brad. And I truly appreciate the kind words.
Id say Mr Rodgers is a more apt comparison haha. He even uses the words neighbors and friends, frequently. Either way, Rich is a great instructor! Anyone lucky enough to have access to lessons with him in person, having his personal attention and advice...I'd be so excited to have that opportunity lol.
I have no idea how it happened that I didn't find your lessons sooner, but better late than never ;D I am very grateful for these. I'll never forget when I first time heared your live performance of "Nguyên" here on RUclips few years ago, I was so impressed, tried to find more but there wasn't any than that concert at that time (still enough to listen to ;) ). Hope your channel will evolve because you are a very good teacher and great musician. Best wishes!
This is good exercise. I've learned these patterns and have used them, but never put them into an exercise of connecting them across strings. A creative "aha" moment happened. Thanks Rich.
Great Video! Funny I teach my Students these shapes in almost the same way ;) I also let them explore the triad on one string... and add the next octave root if I play shape 3 from the e string! love you content!
Very timely Rich - I've been working thru 7th chord arpeggios lately and realized I really need to get triads internalized first in all 12 keys. I'm hoping your next lesson sticks with triads and talks about inversions and playing positionally on the neck. Something I've been working on is going from the lowest note to the highest note in a given position. So for example, in the key of D, the first note in the first position would be F# on the E first finger, A on the E, 4th finger, D on the A fourth finger f# on the D 3rd finger and A on the G first finger. Continue with A on the E string, etc up to the octave F#. Add onto this starting with different fingers and I get a good hour of practice out of just triads in all 12 keys. I'm going to practice me some major triads right now!
I have watched two of your videos so far and I am inspired to practice more meaningful things now. Your content is so easy to comprehend And so inviting. Thanks for sharing
Love this lesson!! But this is why I play a 6 string. Shape 1 I can't play well because my pinky finger is short and shape 3 is a nightmare. LOL But now, when I use my 6 string bass, I can play shape 1 on 12-11-9 with no problems, shape 3 I have to move it up to 12-16-14. But I love it because I am becoming more creative in the ways that I interpret lines. I am creating my own thing. LOL
The short answer would be to turn your amp up a little louder than usual, then play with a lighter touch. If the bass gets too loud, you're playing too hard.
Hey Davey. These wouldn't be inversions. The notes stay the same with each shape. These are different ways to play the notes C E G (in that order) using different positions on the fretboard. Does that make sense?
I really enjoy your teaching but I wish your camera was a bit closer please consider adjusting it. So I can see exactly where your fingers are fretting, other than that keep the good work up.
I'm just learning. I have to say that although I enjoy your teaching style, it's a bit confusing when you use a 5-string bass to teach. Most of your students are still tackling a bass with 4 strings. Love your channel ❤️
All your teachings are awesome Sir. But please I want to ask how to develop faster finger for both hands as a biginner. I would love to know if there's any exercise on that. Thank you Sir.
"if you just sit and practice and immerse yourself in the sound of what you are doing, the simplest things can just become so beautiful." Wisdom!
I love that you never forget us beginners.. thank you

It’s the way that you teach is why I like the channel.
Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time. Thank you for sharing your time with us, Rich :)
Sage words, Chairman. Thank you for watching.
I already knew my pentatonics and triads, but your videos have opened up whole new horizons for using with them. Thank you!
This youtube channel is key for bass players willing to truly improve their skills. Fundamental concepts are discussed here, with the right level of details.
Thank you, Eric. That means a lot.
I came for the great bass lesson and also got a lesson in cool. What a communicator! Two lessons in one. Gratitude!🌹🙏🏼
Thank you so much, Kent. That means a lot.
Not only a great musician, you are a great instructor. God bless!

the instrument behind it intrigues me a lot, rich .... could you have one of these days ... bless bro
feel like this rearranged a bunch of stuff I knew in a very musical way. In some cases the second octave is best served by a different shape, i think, have fun mixing and matching.
Hey Rich, love your stuff. Keep on keepin' on brother, from down the road in Montreal.
that pivot trick with thumb helps so much i kept doing shifts and it was sounding choppy
Very happy to have found this channel. My only critique so far is probably personal preference, but I wish you'd go a bit faster.
Great job Rich, as usual.
Y love rich....You áre the Best....god bless you...amasing leson
This may be my favorite lesson
Yay! Much more coming soon. Thanks, Bonni!
Best bass teacher! PERIOD!

Took me two or three watches of the first half but by the last half i was able to predict/figure out the remaining patterns, great teaching!
Hey Rch, thanks again for another beautiful music lesson.
I’ve bn searching for the right tutorial for basics for awhile, and this channel is amazing. Clearly explained. So here I am at Triads Part 1. Really excited

Good stuff, thanks for making the exercises easy for four string players.
Thank you for the great lessons Rich! I have learnt so much!
Thank you so much ! Your videos definitely break it all down nicely Rich !
Thank you very much, Anthony. That means a lot.

Love it. Love it. Love it. Thank you!!
All your teachings are awesome Sir. But please I want to ask how to develop faster finger for both hands as a biginner. I would love to know if there's any exercise on that. Thank you Sir.
This is the bass equivalent of slow food. It takes longer, but it's so much more nourishing.
Well I know what I will be trying tomorrow
Thank you so much for providing this learning platform. Your easy-going and calm demeanor make it easier for me to grasp your instruction. Great pace in delivery as well!!

Amazing musician and person BRO!
Hi Rich! been picking up bass recently, so these have been really helpful, thank you!
THANKS !

Rich, keep this up man! Your style of teaching is amazing!
Thank you so much. That means a lot.
You look very serene when you play.
You’re amazing Rich!
At 3:09 im very impress by your hand size. I can barely hit the D with my pinky and the fret buzzing all the time. 😅
There is a horror movie called hereditary. They use minor triads in the music and it really is super creepy along with the video images.
Grazie!!!!!
Totally unrelated but: how do i set the knobs on my bass to be able to play with a light touch and STILL get a fat good tone?
The short answer would be to turn your amp up a little louder than usual, then play with a lighter touch. If the bass gets too loud, you're playing too hard.
@@richbrownbass what about the long answer then?
This is ace Rich thanks so much for sharing! Strong foundations 💪
Congratulations on the success of your channel. I love how you stick to the lesson without showing your chops.
Do you have your lessons in order somewhere?
I truly cannot understand how scales and triads play into creating riffs or just jamming in general, if someone could explain I would appreciate it
a perfect example of how someone doesnt need gigantic hands to rock, my motivation at least.
Hi Rich are these Inversions?
Hey Davey. These wouldn't be inversions. The notes stay the same with each shape. These are different ways to play the notes C E G (in that order) using different positions on the fretboard. Does that make sense?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
💎✌️💎
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It would be nice if you had a chalkboard, and draw out your shapes.
Are you tuned a whole step down ?
I'm tuned to the standard low B to G tuning.
I really enjoy your teaching but I wish your camera was a bit closer please consider adjusting it. So I can see exactly where your fingers are fretting, other than that keep the good work up.
Seeing progressions as musical shapes is an outstanding concept!
I'm just learning. I have to say that although I enjoy your teaching style, it's a bit confusing when you use a 5-string bass to teach. Most of your students are still tackling a bass with 4 strings. Love your channel ❤️

Hey Patrick. Here's something that might help. I hope it does.
