  • In this lesson, we're taking a hard look at major scales and the different shapes and configurations available to us from the same root position. This is going to be a pretty eye-opening lesson. I hope you enjoy it.

    Rich I think you're the only person I've been able to listen to go through scales and modes without my brain shutting down. Your lessons bring me lots of those "aaahhh" moments when something I've never quite related to starts to click, then even when the material is familiar to me you broaden my perspective. Good stuff as always my man.

      That means a lot, David. Thank you, brother. None of this stuff needs to be difficult. I just want for it to make sense for everyone. I’m so glad it’s working for you.

    Omg. Three bass books later so glad I found this video and your channel. Incredibly helpful.
    I’m a new player. This exercise is great since I was thinking I’d need to learn most of the shapes for all the modes of all the scales all over the fretboard so I can improvise and play over chord changes. I’m imagining once you get this down you basically can look down at your fretboard and instantly see all the notes that are within mode/key you desire to play in.

    I just spent about 2 1/2 hours on this, practicing the regular, 3 per string, pinky start and 2 per string combinations through 12 keys for major, but I also did the same thing for minor. It made so much click, in a way "how the hell didn't I see this before?!". I will do this for ALL the modes of the major scale and I expect great results from it. After that, it's the nasty ones - melodic and harmonic minor :D Thank you so much Rich!

    pretty darn awesome! You make scales so interesting. I'd love to see a camera on your thumb up on the higher registers to check my position. Pretty uncomfortable up there for me probably a combination of getting my hands in shape and wrong position, Thanks Rich

    Fantastic exercise Rich! The only thing I do different is on the last scale - the two-octave. I shift with the first finger. That way the shift is consistent - when ascending, every time you play the first finger, shift up a whole tone. And, when descending, every time you play the first finger, shift down a whole tone. The last three notes of the scale are the exception in both directions. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge . . .

    I really like what you're doing on your channel and am doing all the lessons you supply. However, I'm 72 and finger it a bit differently but keep the the notes per string. Example: instead of doing 1, 2, 4, slide with 4, I do 1 slide whole tone 1, 3, 4 on my 5 string exercise because it is more natural to me. Do you have a conceptual issue with me doing that?

  • @lheggestad

    Thank you for the two new Major scale patterns (2 notes per string, and the one that starts with 4 notes per string).
    Do you have any new patterns for Minor scales and Dominant 7th scales? (Aeolian and Mixolydian?)

      Hi Joe. No, I have no affiliation with Fender. The bass player in those videos is (the fabulous) Mel Brown. I mean...his last name is Brown, so you're close! lol

    Hi neighbour Rich, thanx for the additional approach to the Maj-Scale...I have a question that concerns the dampening of strings with the right hand on a five string bass...this is an issue for many players...I've seen in your vids you are mostly resting with your thumb on the B- and E-string...but when you change plugging to the A-string and higher you stay on the E-string...you don't get trouble with ringing open strings? Because many 5- or more string players place their thumb flat on the B-, E- and A-string....I hope this description is not too confusing ;-) All the best and thank you in advance....Regards from your German Neighbour...

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  2 года назад

      Hi neighbour Wolfgang! Thank you for your question. I do get trouble from time to time. I try to dampen using a combination of the left and right hands, but unless you're using the 'floating thumb technique' (which I do not at all), there's probably going to be some ringing here and there. If you're interested in keeping the bass silent as much as possible, I think Todd Johnson has a few lessons on the floating thumb technique. Otherwise, you can do what I do and accept the occasional ringing. Haha! All the best from your Canadian neighbour!

    • @wobamusic
      @wobamusic 2 года назад

      @@richbrownbass Hi Rich, thanks for your quick response...I'm more on your way not to use the floating technique...so I'm happy not to be the only guy on the planet...the special attraction lies in the imperfection ;-) think positive and stay negative...all the best

    • @lheggestad
      @lheggestad 2 года назад

      @@richbrownbass Interesting. I have the opposite problem. I started learning on a 5-string and learned the floating thumb. Now I can't play a 4-string without fumbling with my thumb. My ringing issues come from not dampening the high strings, and when my dampening method is touching on a harmonic. Harmonic ringing is the hardest for me because touching a string is supposed to dampen it, not make a harmonic. Argh!
