There's so many little gameplay details that you haven't figured out yet :) This game is insane.
For example:
- The other joystick for slashing/tripping. You can also press on it to make it stronger, and you'll more likely get a penalty as a result.
- Playing as goalie is really hard but some of the moves and animations you can do makes it super fun.
- If you put your controller settings on "advanced", you have a skill stick that is very useful on breakaways (think you need to hold B).
- You can grab the other player by the jersey while fighting.
For non-gameplay related details, in franchise mode you can scout players for the draft and you can actually play with the prospects. You can play games with each continents' prospects and see how they play and it helps you draft players you like.

@@TheNasher61 It had been a little while since I last played, so I went back and tested the "skill stick" just in case you decide to make another video.
So if you put your controller on "advanced", you'll have to hold the left trigger/button (depending on the controller) to do a few of the actions. For shooting, if you don't hold the trigger, then your player will hold the wrist shot animation instead of going for a slap shot. You have to hold the trigger for it to be a slap shot. You can also fake your shot but I don't remember the button to cancel the animation. They probably show it in the "controller layout" menu.
For the skill stick, it will only trigger when you are kinda close the opposing net. In that case, you have to hold the trigger and B (or O on playstation controllers) and you can then control your stick with the main joystick. If you release them, your player will shoot the puck from where the stick blade currently is. Absolutely great for breakaways and it blew my mind when I was younger, it's just unfortunate that it was never considered as a main feature as it is hidden behind a specific setting.
I also suggest going into the settings/sliders and slowing the game down, but that's obviously down to your own preferences!
If I had one complaint about this game is that they don't have some sort of a "be a pro" mode.

You could do an entire video on the scouting system in this game, complete with being able to "scout" players using the skill games. After doing that it would send you stats and current day player comparisons. This is what a hockey game was supposed to be as opposed to the joke we have now.

I used to love playing this game back in the day on PS2. Good ole days. Middle school was great.
EA is REALLY screwing themselves without the features from 2k5. NUMBER ONE reason why I stopped buying sports since 2020, its all copy and paste from year to year. Plus they take out things you like and put them back in year or more later and call it a new feature! WTF! WHY!? One more point is, they BARLEY improve them game year over year. Even if they did improve something they'll take it out and give it back to you a year or more later.
You need to start getting onto the developers if you want this stuff you're the one who has more pull than your average Joe. They put you in the game after all... Don't glaze them for average games. Demand quality.

NHL2k5!!! To me ESPN NHL2k5 was the best hockey game ever made. Personally I had it on the Xbox. The amount of depth in this game, especially during those years if you compare with EA's NHL, was IN-SANE. The actually gameplay was top tier of course, but the game had so many little details. You could play as classic teams, you could change so many settings, change rinks, see and even BEAT actual records, design your jersey, create your own team, etc.. The amount of stats in this game was absolutely crazy. They also pretty much had everything Eastside Manager used to offer in their GM game. The EA NHL games were late to catch up that we enjoyed playing as real GMs, handing out contracts, bonuses and making you use common sense when managing your team. I don't know how this got recommended to me lol but I'm thankful for it. It reminds me of some great fun I've had. Those were better, simpler days.

2k6 was my favorite. That one has the enforcer system where you could use the right stick to chop , elbow , slash , hook people. Maybe you get a penalty but maybe you take out their star players. Great system
NHL 2K5 is the GOAT. You can even name your lines in this game, it has it all

It’s always hilarious looking back at how huge the pucks were back then. It looks like the size of a nerf football lol. Good times with these old games. All EA needs to do is implement all these old modes back and everyone would be suckered right back in lol

You should play NHL Hitz next. If 2k5 is the goat for NHL sim, hitz is the ultimate hockey party game. I'd love to see a modern version come back.
I'm going to be completely honest and say I'll take any commentary, ANY commentary from another hockey game and replace the current ones. I have immediately turned off commentary these past 4 years now after 1 or 2 games playing.

If hockey fans pulled together and sent the NHL a petition that stated we're tired of EA and having only one option, we'd probably see the return of Visual Concepts making hockey games in the 2K series. Here's why I think that.
First, and foremost, the NHL wants money. EA likely payed them for exclusivity rights but if we're not gonna play EAs games because we're desperate for or complacent with EA games just because we want a game..... We're now paying $70/game on minor upgrades when competition means they make almost a whole new game every year or every two years.meaning developers are gonna have to actually work 23 months a year instead of 3 months. Every other developer has to put in the time and you think the minimal upgrades we get takes them that long when it's five years to develop a brand new IP?
Second, Phil Spencer (Xbox CEO) went to Major League Baseball and complained. Yup. Xbox doesn't have a MLB game to compete with The Show because devs gave up. There are licensed MLB games out there that are more arcadey but they're LICENSED. Phil Spencer griped enough that the MLB went to Sony about renewing the contract with the MLB and using it telling them that if they wanted to continue to make The Show, they would have to port the game to other consoles. But, here's the thing. Phil Spencer never stood up for gaming or the gaming industry, which is telling of his character and his faith in the Xbox brand. When they MLB came to him and told him what had transpired with Sony, he never explained to the MLB "Hey, man, that's not cool, that's not how we do in the gaming industry. Exclusive's, especially made by us are our lifeblood. It's one thing to have a third-party have a timed exclusive, but it's a completely different thing to force a first-party developer to port a game made in-house". Phil Spencer didn't do that. He wanted a PlayStation quality game so bad that he NOT ONLY snapped it up as quick as he could, but he also gave it away free on Game Pass, he wanted to drum up interest that bad. Didn't matter it was Sonys pocket that fronted the bill and had to pay for it, the MLB didn't, but he gave it away for free to Xbox consumers knowing PlayStation's strength and clout.
The point is, those organizations clearly have pull. NHL giveth, and NHL taketh away. If MLB can make Sony do that, then NHL can tell EA where to stick it (no pun intended). EA makes enough money from the series that if the NHL threatened them, EA wouldn't say "well fine, good luck finding someone to make NHL games" they wouldn't say that because they need hockey. EA is also a Canadian company where hockey is HUGE. They can't take a threat from the NHL like that or they lose a lot of business.
We as fans of the sport and who want good games have to show corporations where they can stick it. We vote with our wallets. If you want games like NHL 2K5 again, don't support EA or by doing so it'll force the NHL team to actually get off their lazy butts and develop new hockey games as they should. But hey, that's on us. If you want to keep paying $70/yr just to get minor updates then well, sucks to be us. Otherwise we might as well be pushing for a Games as a Service business model where you pay $70 one time and every year it's like a Season Pass where you pay $5-10 for the updates because that's probably about all they're worth

Really happy someone like you is seeing and enjoying the awesomeness that was NHL2K5. Also, IDK if you know this but 2K priced their NHL2K5 game at $20. That's how cool 2K was back then. EA NHL was $60 and was/still is F'n trash. I switched over to NHL2K after the abomination of NHL 2002 and stayed there till the end. NHL2K was always all around 100x better than EA NHL, from presentation, gameplay, etc and it was only $20. Same for NFL2K5... $20!
You should go back try all the other NHL2K games; you won't be disappointed... well, you will when you switch back to EA NHL after checking out NHL2K

I want to see full trophy/award lists. Being able to see the last 5 come on ea. There should be a "Team Room" where it shows all your awards, records and so on.

There has been a community within your community that has wanted to see a nhl franchise series since last year. However, we were down voted into oblivion and silenced by your majority. So if it takes you firing up 2k5 for a franchise, that is almost better than one in the newer games. So plz seriously consider starting a franchise where you can make all the roster decisions and play as many games as you can stand. I feel as though many of your fans would enjoy longer content as well, but I may be speaking for the minority on that side issue. Nonetheless, franchise. Yes. Please. Let's go!!! 🎉🎉🎉

Just some extra controls to help out if you play again (hope you do, maybe the greatest hockey game of all time), 𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆, and translating from playstation to xbox
rb: speed boost (no powerups or fights needed, you have a certain amount that recharges over time)
Right stick: with puck is a deke move depending on direction, without puck is a slash/spear/trip
b: protect puck
rt: shot block
oh also if you do play again, you should try doing a fantasy draft in one of the exhibition modes

These games are different because of HUT. Simple as that. EA found a money printing machine, and that’s all yearly sports games will ever be about for the rest of time.

2K need to get back on the NHL wagon. EA are lazy as shit with NHL and Madden because they don't have to try but NHL rights aren't exclusively held by EA so they could if they wanted to. The only thing I think EA would hold over them is the rights to the minors and the euro leagues which I would definitely miss. First thing I do whenever I start up a new NHL game is play through the CHL then the WJC.
