HOW TO REVIVE DEAD 6V, 12V BATTERIES THAT WON'T CHARGE

  • This video is going over step by step how to revive a dead battery that wont charge using the provided charger.
Kids ride on toys usually have sealed lead acid batteries (SLA)
6 volt and 12 volt batteries can both be done using this method, just match the voltage of the battery you are reviving.
6 volts to 6 volts and 12 volts to 12 volts.
Smart chargers have built in programmes that refuse to charge batteries with voltage that's too low, so a little bit of a hack to trick the charger into playing ball is needed.
If this helps in any way, please consider a thumbs up or leave a comment.
Thanks for stopping in and be sure to check my playlists, I have something for everyone, budget tool reviews, homemade weaponry, 3d printing, and lots more.
Do not attempt to try this at home, unless you are aware of the necessary precautions that need to be taken.
very hazardous chemicals and dangerous reactions.

I had got a booster jump pack that had broken so I took the battery to find out it was completely dead. I found your video and was blown away. I didn't have any distilled water but by the grace of God it is raining here in Pennsylvania so I went out and got a cup of rain water and followed your instructions. I could not believe it worked. This battery sat after taking it out of the pack for about 2 yrs. Now it's taking a charge. Unbelievable!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Mmm I have one of those from harbors freight and after first jump battery is completely gone. Mean it charge but deplete rights away. Was that the same issue? Cause I’m thinking of doing this to that jump start battery pack now lol

@@Oneklickmediathat's the problem this should fix. You could also buy battery acid at a local parts store for 10 bucks and carefully drain the old acid (there won't be much) then top them off with the new. In my opinion the acid is a better option but I'm far from an expert.

OC. It worked like a charm. Once I got to the cell openings and started to inject the distilled water, I realized just how "thirsty" they were. Note to all: use the syringe. If you don't, it will take a long time to fill the cells because you will be constantly waiting for air bubbles to burp. I attached a wall wart with 14 volts, 800mAmps. At first (I put it through an ammeter) there was very little (current) draw. Then it picked up. It was a few hours but my battery was not used a lot, just old. It really took off and got to the point where my (not so smart) battery charger started to give the yellow LED. (Fast charge). Power Sonic wall wart style. I am letting it "rest". I am confident it will come back full force within a day. Thank You for your video.

I play bass on the street and used YUASA 12v SLA batteries for years. Use to be (back in 2001-2003) at Maplins would cost 25 quid brand new. However, behind the Preston Road branch in Brighton there is a scrap yard. Now they had a massive collection of old SLA batteries that were used as backup power for fire and security alarms (like for banks) that were still perfect and sold for 50p. It was stipulated in the insurance that they had to be replaced every 5 years even if they were never used. This was great, I didn't even need to buy a charger. I used them to power a 25 watt car amp, had a guitar fx (Zoom GFX 707) as a pre-amp and just a speaker box. The Zoom pedal runs on 4 AAs. Thanks for the vid, never thought of opening one, I thought there might be some very dangerous caustic crap in there. Anyway, try a scrap yard if your looking for a simpler solution.

I worked in Gallaghers Service department for 12 years from 1978 - we used similar batteries (completely closed) on solar units. These batteries would go high resistance so could not be charged by normal means... what we did was have a 2uF or 4uf 250VAC capacitor in series with mains, my case 250 VAC onto the battery - even a couple of hours would bring them back.

    • @oraclescave

Put the water over the glass matts until it soaks in, you want to tip out the extra water above the matts, before you seal it.
The water is to help dissolve the crystals in the matt, thats all, they don't have to stay flooded like a lead acid battery.

Just scamming ways companies have to make you spend money, that's why the old fashioned chargers are being fazed out.

  • @annaplojharova1400
    @annaplojharova1400 2 года назад +11

In these sealed batteries the electrolyte is supposed to be completely absorbed by the gel in the separator, so the fact there is no liquid is normal. But at the same time it is indeed the common failure mode for these to loose the water from the electrolyte over time, so they do need refill. But problem is, it is difficult to judge the correct amount, you never know how much of water is actually missing.
And to get the water really back into the gel where it will actually work needs time, so not-as-smart trickle charger left on it for a week or so will be just enough to charge the electrodes along the water diffusing back in.

Then, I synced the dead batteries with the jumpstart battery up to 8-9V and charged the batteries using the HarborFreight battery charger here (www.harborfreight.com/6v12v-2-amp-3-stage-microprocessor-controlled-automatic-battery-charger-57015.html). Just one note about replacing the rubber caps then charging. People may not be replacing the rubber caps until after the battery is charged due to gas build up during charging.

Thanks for posting the video. Encouraged my to try to revive a dead and discontinued Sealake 33ah 12v in a Nautilus power bank someone was throwing out. $299 new , $100+ for a replacement cell. (Cdn$) Guy tossing the whole power bank thing due (inverter etc) to the battery not taking a charge. Dry as bone, we'll see how it does after a full charge. Cheers !

Excellent, I would love to hear how you get on.
It may take a few cycles.
And if "sulfation" is the cause, Google reversing the terminals.
This is a method used to reverse the "sulfation"
It basically breaks the crystals back down.
And if they don't work, all you need to add is a small amount of sulphuric acid, just Google amount for your size of cell.
I bet it works perfectly fine
      Goodluck

Excellent Geo, and if the charge wont hold very long, it will need fresh acid in the cells, can be purchased in battery refill or in a bottle, you dont need much but your battery will be back to brand new power with fresh acid, possibly get it from a car battery.
But your battery will work might just be much weaker than brand new.

Thanks, I am going to give this a go on my mobility cart Just so you know I have an old 230v to 18-volt ac transformer and connected the output to a bridge rectifier 20 amp type put that on a heatsink with fan and connected it to my 12 volts 12 amp cart battery both in parallel and run it for 2 hours and toped up the cells as needed and watched the output clime from 8 volts to 14.20 volts then let them rest as they were getting a bit hot after the 2 hours had passed I was looking at a resting voltage of 13.08 volts on both cells now I have to go back to the smart charger and will load both batteries to see how it went!! 16-06-21 if it all works it could save me £60.00 so thanks Bob in the UK

These days, batteries have glass matt cells/plates
So the only real problem, is dissolving the crystals in the glass matt, or refreshing the electrolytes and water.
It's very hard to actually break a battery, I hope you remember this, and give it a go sometime, you will be amazed how fast you fix it.

You can also buy battery refills, just fresh acid, much much cheaper than a new battery, all the power in a battery comes from the "electrolyte" liquid, the rest of the battery is just a jar really.

I've been looking for a s/h mobility scooter of which there are many where the original owner is no longer alive, but the family have not kept them charged, and the batteries are dead. These are always way cheaper and now it's a good option for me to consider. £100 plus per new battery was out of the question, but the price of some distilled water and a bit of faffing about with the cells is quite within my means.
