3 years later and this still working. Thanks for the tip my friend!!!!
Great to hear!
This absolutely works. I used a wire from terminal to terminal instead of scissors, but this definitely works.
You are genius 👍I can't believe I bought milwaukee battery 6 months ago I tried to charge it gave me broken flashing light I did exactly what you said and now it's working thank you so much 👍🙏
I've just had this problem, didn't have 2 sets of sisors so just used two bits of wie, and it worked , cheers
Thanks so much! Best tip I've found on RUclips that saved me from having to buy four new batteries. The fifth had enough of a charge to recharge, and then I used that with the scissors to give the other four a starter charge to fully charge them. Great job!
Glad it helped!
Thank you ! I have 5 batteries that were dead and now working 😊
Worked perfectly for me. I had lost one battery pack in my attic 2 years ago and recently found it in my blown insulation above. I used small electrical jumpers for about a minute and then charged it all the way through. Thanks for the advice. Beats $133 for a battery at Home Depot!
This method worked fine for me with a 12V Li-Ion 2Ah Bosch battery, which seems to have good capacity after being revived and charged. It got overheated several times during charging after the initial boost presented in this video. I left it to cool down, and then resumed normal charging until full.
The battery was dead right from the start after unpacking the new drill, I am glad I kept it around until I saw this video, thank you!
I suspect that this method is very useful to get a battery out of a deeply discharged state, where the charger will not start doing it's job. What I mean is that it's not going to make wonders with a battery that has reduced capacity / dead cells after a lot of use.
O
Absolutely brilliant! This totally worked for me. Thank you so much.
Thanks mate. this is youtube knowledge at it's finest
Did the battery drill for a few years and got sick of the lack of power + the cost for another battery! For a number of years now I'm happy using a extension cord which never loses power... + I don't have to keep buying expensive batteries that have to be recycled once it can't be recharged. The battery drill is great if the electricity is unavailable.
Built a house with a Porter Cable 14V. Switched to Ryobi. For non-professional but serious home use - the 18V Li Ryobi family rocks.
As for yard tools, I think Ego is fine. I had American Lawnmower/Zombi 58V. Not going back to cords and gas.
CJ, don't forget the power you get from as you put it, extension cord. Even brand new battery fully charged won't match the power of corded tools.
You can also do a similar method to your car battery that goes dead. You need to have a charger that is rated for at least 200 amps. There's a RUclips video on it
Try dragging an extension cord around a job site.

Great tip..better than some of the complicated ones I've seen. I've got two sets of scissors, just not one charged battery to jump it off of :( 3 uncharged drills, including one Makita not from a power pack 🤪
Thank you! That worked for me too? Had Dewalt Lithium ion batteries. One of them wouldn't even register on the charger? Two min scissor technique with my other battery worked!
Thank you so much, I managed to charge my late father drill, thanks for the tips
ThanX for that. Just want to mention that my hand drill charger packed up so I now use the car battery charger. Both take 12 volts and it works every time saves buying a new expensive replacement drill charger. Twelve months later still using the car charger and the car charger still charges my car battery so no problem. Just locate the positive terminal on your hand drill battery.
Do u use 1 dead bat and 1 charged battery
I’ll give that a go. Beats spending money unnecessarily, thank you
Thank you for the knowledge.....regardless of all the haters, it dont hurt to attempt to revive and definitely easy enough to TRY.....
Fantastic tip! Thank you! Worked perfectly!
I’ll try that next time. Thanks. Good advice
Handy, timely info!
I had several dead batteries, instead of this, remove the battery packs out of the cases, use a ohmmeter to see which doesn’t have any voltage (check after having on charger) and replace that cell from one of the other ones, most packs only have one dead cell keeping the battery from charging full. Just need a soldering iron. I’ve made 3 chargeable batteries saving $$$ until I run out of replacements.

You have saved me a fortune! We have 20+ drills 3 corded and 1 working battery charged. Thanks!!!

Thanks, that worked. at first i tried it with shinny Radio Shack jumper alligator leads they got worm right aw ay. Used the visors works like a charm.
Thanks for your time and the knowledge you delivered on this video.
good idea never thought of it. thumbs up
Awesome trick! Rejuvenated my old Dewalt that was in the recycle bin.
Dude, just did it. Works like a champ.👍 thanks bra
Thanks just discovered your video today. I have several batteries in my garage that seem dead . I plan to try connecting with between batteries with jump wires with alligator clips
Very helpful! Thanks!
Never in the manual so many thanks.....
THIS is a good video in that it shows it is possible to get a little more life out of the pack. However there is a video out where the guy explained JUST because the drill spins DOES NOT mean the battery is GOOD. I thought why the hell not.HE SHOWED WHY.!!! you need to put the drill under a LOAD,TRY drilling a 1/2 hole in wood with pressure.IT may stop dead let off the pressure it runs.He explained it this way.IT takes 18 volts to spin the motor but very little amperage.THE AMPS the battery can keep putting out are what has the POWER.To do it right you really need to replace the cells that no longer have CAPACITY to hold amps.Hope this helps you guys that are like me and like to mess around getting stuff to work again for fun.
Yeah, internal resistance is another factor in batteries dying, anything from an old AAA zinc-carbon to a car battery. In flashlight batteries, over time gas bubbles build up around one terminal and that obviously limits the output current, I suspect something similar happens in nicads but I'm just guessing. It's independent from the reversible nickel crystal short circuits that can be zapped as seen in the video, but as the battery ages both processes occur.
Your video is most easy and efficient, it worked, Thank you.
Glad it helped
Worked great, saved me from buying a new battery
Once the cells are shot, the charge won’t last. I like the d cell replace/solder option another person suggested. Pretty cool permanent solution.
Great video! Thx for the info.
Thanks man, you just saved me a 60$👍
A similar situation for car batteries. Connect the dead battery in Parallel ( + to +)(- to -) and put the Charger on @ 2 amps. Seems the Current FLOW helps the Dead battery come back to some sort of life again.
Excellent!!! Thanks a lot.
So cool, can't wait to show my sister.
thanks for your tip friend, good advice
awesome and I'm able to fix two of my batteries...Thanks bro
Worked! Thanks.
Thanks I have four batteries .I'm excited 😁
Used alligator clips and did just great

20v and 18v are actually the same number of 3.7v Li-Ion cells, some companies are advertising full charge and others use base voltage.
Dear Mr Haykus, Glad Frank Lee corrected your guess of Lithium Ion cells. Our lads say Never touch li-ion cells as they are extremely dangerous. Nicad & NiMH (Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydroxide) are the only batteries one can "flash" (touch/apply higher voltage) to burn off the whiskers that grow between & short out the poles (+&-). Faithfully Fred Hughes
batteries range from 1.5-1.8 volts. 15×1.6= 18v 15×1.8 makes 20v. a drill battery is 15 rechargeable c batteries. dont know where youre getting 3.7 volts per battery. 15×3.7 is 48 volts.
I have done that on Craftsman C3 Lithium Ion Batteries several times. It may have 1 cell go totally dead, the charger will call it defective and won't charge anymore. Pop the top off after taking out 4 or 5 screws, jump the pack to a good one to supply voltage than jump the dead cell with power if needed, once it goes back positive for a few minutes get it in the charger asap. It will charge up normally and work for years again with no issues.
I can't believe it, but it worked out for me, thank you
You are a gd genius Gump...They are gonna make you a general.
The first thing this old Guitar Doctor (Stars Guitars in San Francisco "Back in the day") thought of was to replace the pair of scissors with 4 alligator clips, one at each end of two jumper wires.
Yep!
A bit safer!!
The wires heat up too quickly. Use scissors instead, they won't heat up. Do your own video if you think you can do better.

Very good video. I think the same thing happened to my BlackBerry PlayBook. For some reason it is not charging because I haven't used it for like 2 or 3 years. The only reason I picked it up was to get the photos and since it is probably glued shut I think I'll give up on it until I watch a RUclips video that tells me how to open it and take care of that battery.
Thanks for sharing, never knew you could do that, can't wait to try it on my batteries now 👍🏻

These lithium batteries can Jump start your truck too, just wire some Romex to wedge into the proper channel/terminal of battery and touch the Romex to correct pos/neg term
Good idea, did this to fix 14.4v i got a deal on.
I have a Lincoln elect grease gun that the batteries won't charge on unsure if it's the batteries or the charger thanks for the tips on here I may try a car battery chargers
The good battery powered the drill faster than the recharged ones. You could hear the difference. Pressing the trigger is no real test of the rejuvenated battery's readiness to tackle jobs. Instead, drive a screw with it to see whether it does the job or poops out.
or a cordless circular saw
Yes you can hear the recharged batterys are not full charged and are slowly dying, sorry but ones its dead, its dead
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "scissoring"..
My batteries will charge they just don't last long. I'm old school and hate battery devices so I bought a Honda 2200 generator for the back of my truck. My "battery" weighs about 50 pounds, fits every tool I own with more than enough power, and never needs charging. It even fits the house if the power goes out. That's what I call a battery!
FYI if you have a smaller generator that you use frequently it will start when you need it. I have a large generator that seldom gets started that may require work. Better to have a small one that starts than a large one that's sketchy.
The charger says very clearly Nicad, meaning its not based on lithium ion. You can safely put a 12V car battery to force charge it.
Just because you see a spark at initial (flat 18V Lithium Ion battery to 13.8V fully charged vehicle battery) connection, does NOT mean the current is flowing in the desired direction. {Using a 1N5408 in series could help solve this}
A 24V truck battery is closer to the desired 21.6V charging voltage required for the 18V rechargeable drill battery. ✔
Thanks 👍😊 buddy 😗☺️ Have a good day
I fixed my dewalt batteries by buying Milwaukee tools. No comparison!
Good answer,...I did similar thing but with Makita Lithium battery powered tools!
good one you got me rolling....
Lithium ion batteries have much more energy than Nicads. My lads said "Dad, don't muck around with Lipolys, they're much too dangerous. Nicads & Nickle metal hydroxides are only batts I "fry whiskers off" using an higher voltage for a "flash". Funny that Paul; my friend gave me his deWalt Post battery Nicad blackbox set ($1500 yrs ago) & bought Milwaukee/ No comparison he says. Hence sons & I are deWalt users. Amazing tools. My dad had an alloy Black&Dekker skill saw, handsaws & built 2houses in his short 49yrs. Fred NZ
Dude dewalt batteries are way better than the Chinese Milwaukee batteries
👍I know that's rite
I have a question I bought a battery operated chainsaw Harbor Freight in for some stupid reason I opted to just get one battery at the time they now have discontinued this chainsaw and I can't find the battery anywhere online so my question is does it have to be the same type of battery to use to do this or can I use another battery let's say a DeWalt battery and try to charge this battery with it? I still have the charger to for the battery of speaking of which I could continue to charge the battery with after trying this technique
What about the newer dealt batter iui es that don't have that long stick up part?
Thanks brother, that was awesome! Like giving it a jump!
Lithium cell balancing. What happens is the Lithium curve. If you dump more then 80% of the charge they drop off in voltage sharply. Chargers are designed to detect a certain voltage then begin the charge state. If you burn Lithium down past 20% remaining it cycles it 1 time. If you do this too often you'll change the chemistry. So cell balancing like he did brings the voltage back up where the charger can detect it and begin to charge it. NEVER leave a lithium cell dead for to long. They will self discharge slowly in a non rechargeable dead state and thus the charger will refuse to charge them until that low voltage is met.
@@TheWickerShireProject those are not Li cells, they are NiCad. Look at the charger when he has the battery in it, it very clearly says "1-HOUR NiCd Charger"
I have a De Walt cordless driver (14 volts) that I bought used at a pawn shop... The drill' s in good shape but the battery discharges pretty quick
What would 'car' jumping a dead battery do that an outright charging wouldn't fix, does the 'smart' charger circuitry stop the current flow when it reads a threshold lower voltage on the battery?
It worked, thanks!
Wow thx great tip
I've had my Ryobi cordless tools and 18V batteries for 8 years now, still on the original lithium batteries. Even my nickle cadmium battery still charges (though it never lasts that long).
All that said, if I have outlets nearby I still prefer corded tools. Never a problem with power.
Yep same
The problem I've had with some of my older Ryobi 18V batteries is that they will not hold a change for long and tools will run slower and sometimes stall even though they look to be fully charged with a green light.
@@BP-1988 - Only my Ni-Cad battery does that. My 8-year + old lithium batteries will hold their charge for months without use. Always surprising me. Now, that said I don't usually need by battery powered tools extended periods of time....as I said, when dong a bigger job I prefer corded tools myself.
The newer DeWalt batteries have a different "connection pin" configuration (to the drill) than those older batteries you showed. So a person would have to figure out another way to connect (1+1=) >2< of the newer type batteries together.??
Wow, that's a great video. I will always cheer for you in Korea I'm looking forward to a great video. Have a nice day.
This works on packs with all good cells with little loss to original power rating but it seems that you have a bad cell in the bunch, hence the lack of power.
One can repair the pack IF they have the proper skill and knowledge. But as dangerous as these cells are if over heated or ruptured, it can be extremely dangerous and catastrophic to life and limb and should NOT be attempted. .
I saw a friend throw a screwdriver on his work bench and then a hissing sound. He knicked the tip of a battery cell from inside the pack that had gone bad and the next thing we knew the cell flew up off the bench emitting a 3 foot flame that was no joke and proceeded to fly around the garage for what seemed an eternity but in reality was 7 seconds as per cctv footage.
If this doesnt work when you try this hack, dispose of the pack properly, PLEASE!!!
These things are like bombs if one goes off, they all go.
Cool vid bro! Knowledge is power.
you have to reboot the bms and that will fix it sometimes>not always

the stem on that battery sure is clean and new looking for a battery that will not hold a charge any longer, just saying that there should be some scruff marks or something from inserting it into the drill.
I tried scissors and also had a rock and paper on stand by .
But did you do it .. one two three.. times? Hmmmm?
Perfect!
Say that you have two like you have and one from a Snap-On one that is good now how do you tell which is which one and how are you connecting them ?.
I had Batteries R Us replace the batteries in my 12 and 18-volt drills
for about 45 dollars each
Might be more now after several years.
I did the same thing, but then the battery that they worked on lasted only nine months and then would not take a charge again! I don't think it was worth what they charged!
@Lonnie Chartrand no because you could have bought 4 of the Chinese knock offs for yellow or red for about 100
that first one is shot..its weak at best..yes you can use it but will be short term. Great video though and will try it on mine
What this does is de-whisker the NiCad cells, standard method is a very quick flash with a small lead acid battery. Often only a partial cure but nothing to lose. NiCads are environmentally cavalier but are available from China if you want to replace the internals for considerably less than DeWalt's eye watering prices. There were cases where nickel metal hydride batteries wouldn't charge when completely flat because of poor charging regime circuitry -- lithium don't seem to be afflicted.
Getting the battery up enough to charge is one thing, but the battery holding the charge is quite another. My 18V batteries charged up, but the next day they were dead again. Still needed to replace them.
also sometines the connections carbonise like they are burnt.i found a little rub with a jewelers file freshens them up again
Sounds great, but what if no good battery available?
Thanks Man..will do
You are awesome thank you
Cool I didn't think of that similar to jumping your car batt . Thx
Great tip it works thanks👏👏👏
Yes, all the different types of advice, most do not work. I have removed the battery pack and connected it to a 12V, 7,5amp motorcycle battery by means of a 3m cord. I do woodwork and need to drill, countersink and screw - so I have my new drill for drilling and 2 others connected to the battery and they do the job well.
Pretty clever. Seems a bit ungainly... but you now have a 'corded' drill. Nice work.
I use an ATI Radeon cooler to fully discharge it, after the drill stops working. I already experienced improvement. Charging time is 5h fir all cheap devices.
Thanks Dogg

Yeah isn't technology great!
I agree. I'm tired of turning my monitor up on end to watch videos like this.
You'd think smart phone manufacturers would disable recording in portrait mode. Very annoying when watching a news clip on TV and the video cuts off the left and right 2/3's of the screen.
So what you needed was enough charge in the batteries to tell the charger something needed charging?

Web memory"? something about a build up a crystals in the battery, quick short blast is all that required from a car battery.
Not sure i follow. Are you saying to do this to a car battery or to use the car battery to shock the failed LI battery back to life? (Most car batteries are 12v, not enough to shock a 20v LI)
@@leojf3828 Use a car battery to "jump" the power tool battery. I've also heard it called "blowing the short out" of the dead battery.

Hello
Can I use 18 v new battery to revive a 14.4 v dead battery for my cordless drill?
14.4 v new batteries are very hard to find these days.

They will self discharge slowly in a non rechargeable dead state and thus the charger will refuse to charge them until that low voltage is met. Its a neat trick to get you back up and running. Just keep them on the charger once it begins to slow down and NEVER drop them too low. Your Lithium batteries will last for years! Battery companies should always give a tip on how to renew a dead pack... but there's no money in that! At $100 for two packs is outrageous!
These are NiCd.
It’d work for about 30 seconds and die again. It’s not charging correctly because some cells in the battery are dead. I used this brand for years with the old style batteries and used to build batteries for the aviation industry. Nice hack if your charger is faulty but you’d have to post an update with the battery fully charged and put it under a working load for me to believe this really works.
