One fact about the NWFC shutdown that nobody mentions is that not every game shutdown - 5 games survived the shutdown, being all of the Call of Duty games except World at War (So CoD 4, MW3, BO1) and the 2 James Bond games (Goldeneye and Quantum of Solace). All of these games ran off Activision servers and not Gamespy (all the CoD games also relied on Nintendo's servers for login functions). You could connect online and play as normal until 2020, when both 007 games had their servers shut down (Goldeneye has had its servers restored since) and the login authentication servers for the CoD games broke, forcing you to mod your wii and use gecko codes to play online again. The Cods would remain playable until August 1st 2023, when the servers were unexpectedly shutdown, marking the true end of NWFC.
I remember when I got my Nintendo Switch just a few months ago, I was shocked you had to PAY for online multiplayer. I thought Nintendo Online was just for those emulators & other things!
Every time I'm about to order a copy of GT7, I'm reminded that I need to pay for PSN if I want to enjoy the game like I did on PS3 where it's still free. Everything is subscription based these days and I hate it.
Not something thought about all that often. If it was an extra month or two left of the 3ds/wii u servers, it would have been exactly 10 years apart. Crazy.
I remember my local video store wasn't closed yet around this time. I rented Mario Kart Wii the week that this happened. Played a few online matches and saw it end.
I remember calling Nintendo's customer service during that period and they said exactly what you said at 5:38. It's understandable why the number of players was "declining rapidly since the 3DS released", as said by a representative and it was only a matter of time the pattern happens again with the Wii U and 3DS online services. Who knows how long before it happens with the Switch?

(what was also was recommended from nintendo germany at the time) when i was at home again we got pretty fast internet (16k DSL) for the time in a rural area of germany. playing mario kart ds with mostly japanese people was really cool. and they all using the "snake" method to win wifi matches. it was a really fun time back then :) on the other note^^ nintendo still suffers form hackers at mario kart 8 deluxe its really anoying today to play this in a public lobby these days
I was 14 when NWFC disconnected. I was definitely aware of what's happening, but I didn't realize what itd' be like to be too young to understand what's happening and the shutdown happening all of a sudden
I didn't had a Wii at the time and I had very little time with online playing Smash Brawl at a friend's place. When now playing Wii, DS, WiiU and 3DS asking to link online (or Miiverse) it just spoils the mood when playing. It will be missed.

I actually managed to get this working on mario kart DS with my friends in another continent, for anyone that doesn't know you actually can still get the online parts of DS games to work by putting in a custom IP address into the settings.
I spent the last moments of 3DS Online in Pokémon X which I was playing through at the time, what an experience... I reckon it was the same for those who were around for WFC's final moments
I always loved the WFC online service the whole way through. It was fun playing in Tournaments and Online matchmaking for Mario Kart Wii, which still motivates me to keep playing via Wiimmfi to this day. Also, (7:54) I’m glad to be featured in this video lol
I didn't even realise this was closed so early. The Switch wasn't even out yet, and people were still playing these games via backwards compatibility on the current gen consoles of the time. Hell, most people never even upgraded to the Wii U so that _was_ the current major console of the time

I was at school and kicked a kid from under the lunch table. The principal saw me do this, and told me to take my tray to silent lunch, then come with him to the office after I was done. When we got to the office, he told me that my punishment was going to be 3 days of ISS (In-school suspension, where you get strictly supervised). I told him I didn't want to do that, so he told me the other option was OSS (Out of school suspension, where you can't come to school at all) I chose OSS, so he called my mom to tell her about it. She asked to speak with me. When the principal handed me the phone, she said that if I choose OSS, and she has to stay home from work to look after me, she will take away all my electronics for the rest of the school year. (This was in March, I think, so that was gonna be a long time) So, with her saying that, I took back my decision and chose ISS. BUT, what happened the second I got home? All of my electronics were confiscated. And it was for the remainder of the school year, even though I did WHAT MY MOM SAID. That was in 2014, when Nintendo WFC shut down. Even on the night I knew it was gonna shut down, I BEGGED my parents to let me have my DS and Wii for just one night, and they could add a whole extra week to keeping them after the school year ended, but they still refused. Even though that was almost 11 years ago, alternatives exist and I'm an adult now, I'm still pissed off by it. They blatantly lied to me and took away my chance of experiencing Nintendo WFC one last time.
gameboy color had online multiplayer (in japan), the gamecube had it too so its not the first (my examples may also not be) but its definitely the easiest given its built in with no adapter required

I'm not intrigued about this any more. Nothing to do with the video, everything to do with Nintendo. They're greedy. They shut down DS, Wii, 3DS, everything that isn't current gen basically because they put their bottom line first. They killed the stores too. Basically, these are cart-only offline devices only now - checkmate Nintendo they're usually better as that anyway. But it's one reason I don't like Nintendo. In 2017 I was 12 and didn't like the fact they released a glorified Tegra tablet with strange disconnectable controllers and killed their consoles with any semblance of personality. Now they killed those last gens' stores even when it took Microsoft 19 years, and Sony's are still up. Xbox Live for the 360 is still going very strong even still. Nintendo doesn't care, and luckily I don't care enough to worry and am happy with the DS and games I have.
Nintendo used to be better and now they only rely on a single console model instead of two, apart from making you pay more for accessories... Thats why i preferred to get a playstation instead

I had gotten the USB connector at one point in 2008. It overheated too quickly and outright stopped working after 2 months

Right now they are offline but at one point they did outlive NWFC
Nintendo didn't force 3rd parties to use WFC, 3rd parties could host their online games on their own servers, like some bigger publishers did.

I'm not intrigued about this any more. Nothing to do with the video, everything to do with Nintendo. They're greedy. They shut down DS, Wii, 3DS, everything that isn't current gen basically because they put their bottom line first. They killed the stores too. Basically, these are cart-only offline devices only now - checkmate Nintendo they're usually better as that anyway. But it's one reason I don't like Nintendo. In 2017 I was 12 and didn't like the fact they released a glorified Tegra tablet with strange disconnectable controllers and killed their consoles with any semblance of personality. Now they killed those last gens' stores even when it took Microsoft 19 years, and Sony's are still up. Xbox Live for the 360 is still going very strong even still. Nintendo doesn't care, and luckily I don't care enough to worry and am happy with the DS and games I have.

Nintendo used to be better and now they only rely on a single console model instead of two, apart from making you pay more for accessories... Thats why i preferred to get a playstation instead
