My wife had this piece from Ren played at her mother's funeral on Sunday. It was evocative, reverent and lovely. After the ceremony, we had several people ask us about it, including a couple of octogenarians. Ren transcends age and touches hearts without saying a word.
RanAGenarians are aware. Sorry for your loss, and such a wonderful gift to her mom , family and friends, and more importantly, she gave herself a nice warm gift in a time of need.
Watching you, as a piano teacher, break down a Ren piano piece when he is self taught, and pouring on the accolades to boot just warms my heart. I found myself nodding my head in agreement when you pointed out a particularly interesting or skillful passage and I can’t play a note, lol. Thank you I totally enjoyed my time spent with you and can’t wait for more.
As a pianist myself, not near your caliber, I appreciated when his chord structure was very nontraditional and the face you’d make, I’d catch my self making. I LOVE listening to non-classically trained pianists bc they have no rules and make beautiful chord structure/cadences. Sometimes I’m envious of that! REN blows my mind on so many levels and I really appreciated your breakdown… super talented! Thank you!!
Ren being self-taught is wild to me - I'm guessing for some folk if the music needs to come out, it bloody well finds a way regardless. Great video again from yourself Robbie. This will, for sure, have some Renegades dusting off old keyboards & giving things a go themselves. Love it! :)
Not to be a jerk but ABOUT DANG TIME Robbie! Just Kidding. Please read the description. It's powerful. He had no words to express his grief and created this masterpiece for Callum. This hits so hard. I fell in love with this the first time I heard it and had to run into the house to see the video.
"For Joe" is another live take, composed by Ren , whith a very nice piano arrengment on it, where he kills it. Please review it with your sharp detailled analysis you always bring on...
Such a beautiful tribute to his friend, and you've really helped me understand the technical construction of the composition in a way that usually eludes me because I am as musical as cheese.
Had such a good time watching you watch Ren and the breakdown was awesome. Also, he’s beginning to get into your system a little; it’s okay he does that to everyone 😊 Looking forward to seeing more!
Found this quite fascinating. I’ve wondered how music is scored when it has not been written down in the first place. Thank you for this. It’s actually one thing Ren cannot do!
@pyqio apparently not - he did go to the Bath School of Performing Arts, as I understand it, but no one has ever said what course within performing arts he did or what specific classes he took while he was there. It's almost beyond comprehension that he didn't do music there, but a) for all we know he was there for acting or something, and b) there have to be programs where people who can't read music, can still go to "do music." (I'm a classically trained amateur pianist, myself; I have no idea about those options but it seems to me that they have to exist) And he's on record in a number of different interviews saying he doesn't know anything at all about theory, he just feels his way through playing & composing music. Talks about knowing chords on the guitar as "shapes." Composed the score for string quartet for MG3 the same way he produces beats and stuff (ie, by ear, and not as sheet music).
I understand there may be programs that do the scoring, and I think that our reactor here is illustrating one. Is that the case? Can you enlighten us? Can the scoring happen as it’s being played by the original creator, or does it only happen by the person wishing to duplicate it, after the fact? Charlie played REN’s music on Money Game 3. Would he have worked from a score? He is classically trained.
Perfect timing for this. Having a not so good day and hearing this piece which I already love helped ease my heart. Then getting to watch you appreciate and analyze it helped even more. 😊 And the Sublime shirt was well spotted!
Love it when you showed your appreciation to Ren's homage to his lost friend. Coming from a pro teacher. Afraid here at the start you'll tear down Ren's piano skills, oblivious to the intent of the content, and of course push one's God complex technical superiority. Thanks man.
Any time I hear Ren's piece I am reminded of Hans Zimmer's Interstellar. I have no music theory and no ear-training, so it was only after you outlined Ren's chords that I could check and see that while the chord progressions are different, at least my sense of familiarity does make some sense.
I’ve been waiting on you getting to this reaction. Not sure why, but every time I hear this I get emotional. It really sounds like he is picturing the ups and downs of a wonderful and tragic friendship in his music.
33:23 - awww, my breath caught in my throat, you reacted to what I think of as the most magical moment of the song (this one isn't a favourite of mine but I've played piano for 45 years so some of the compositional choices in any song I listen to jump out quickly). Going from the main "sweet" version of the theme to a variation with the open fourths in the right hand is a choice that delights me, given Ren being a person who didn't study formally & whose output is rock/pop/folk/rap tradition. We see here and there (and especially in the musical interludes in Jenny/Screech/Violet) that he can compose bits of music for a solo acoustic guitar that stand on their own in that context without vocals, but a full piece dedicated to solo piano is a different endeavour to flesh out than those other beautiful musical ideas stitched into some of his songs. More than any other part of this song, the variation in fourths makes me feel comfortable with his decision to go ahead with adding THIS song to his official catalogue (vs something he enjoys playing around with in his life outside of performance). It might not be Chopin or anything, but it's legit and I'm glad he showed us what he can do in this genre. (another "surprising for a guy who writes incredible rock/pop/folk/rap stuff" thing he's done, that's a substantial bit of writing rather than just a little snippit in a song, is the second part of Money Game 3) edit - hey Robbie, I can't find the video of you playing your own version - is it not up yet? The text on the screen made me think that it is but I don't see it in your list of videos.
I was trying to figure out what captivates me about your reactions and analysis and I really think it just comes down to the fact that you love music and it shows in everything you do. Love Ren's music and really enjoyed watching your process!
it reminds me of fantasia (the Disney movie) and all the rawness - the music and art convey every part of creation and destruction. This feels like that to me. That is amazing how you can hear and play.
You are the most competent and gifted reactor to dissect a masterpiece like this! As an Italian musician I also find references to Ludovico Einaudi. Surely REN has boundless knowledge of all music..🤙
This is one of the most interesting videos I've seen. It's cool to see someone so talented do what they love and how their brain ticks. You are an awesome man thank you so much .
I’m not finished watching… But I am so thankful you’re doing this. This piece is beautiful. It’s heartfelt and I feel like it tells a story. The best part is I played this song for my 92-year-old mother who has dementia but has listened to Classical Music her entire life, and she immediately connected with this piece. I ended up having to play it for her three or four more times because she was enjoying it so much. I play the violin, but I have always wanted to learn how to play piano. I know the notes, I can plink around on it, but sadly, I don’t have coordination to play anything complicated with two hands. And certainly not reading music for multiple clefs at the same time.❤ I appreciate all your effort in breaking this down. I’m gonna keep watching.❤❤
oh wow, that's really beautiful, about sharing it with your mom. Which I mean in both ways - you shared it ie you brought it to her, but also it's now a moment of connection that you share, amidst the ravages of dementia.
Wow! Just listening to learn to play the emotional true storynof the loss of his dear friend. Now this is a first to not be interested in Ren the human being, amazing artist and his struggle over 10 yrs with lymes disease? I'm just flabbergasted.
This would be an interesting back-to-back reaction vid for me (but it wouldn't do numbers for your channel, so don't bother!) The band is Jinjer, the song is Pisces, the live(-ish. The label were a tad naughty & had an engineer overlay some of the album track over it) capture is: ruclips.net/video/SQNtGoM3FVU/видео.html It's not their best work- they do some beautifully intricate thru-composed stuff these days, but it's one of the wildest soft/LOUD pieces in existence! LOL Second half of your reaction vid would then be to John Wilson's piano adaptation of Jinjer's Pisces (he also thoroughly enjoys Jinjer after we got him to upload some reaction vids to them, but he's a professional musician who's capable of impressive stuff like this!): ruclips.net/video/8UA5Rw4JpeE/видео.html As I said, this probably wouldn't do good numbers for your channel.... but I cannot see a world where you would not enjoy those 12 minutes, so maybe give these 2 links a go & just humour me with a quick response under this comment to let me know what you thought?! ;)

This is a beautiful comment.
Sorry for your loss
It’s beautiful and somehow evokes the feeling of a life lived rather than solely a life lost.

This has to be the best breakdown of this track on YT by a fucking mile❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Agreed!!
This is such a beautiful tribute to his friend who passed in a swimming accident and you can hear the ocean in this piece.

"... because I am as musical as cheese." 🤣🦇🤣🦇🤣🦇🤣
Same here, my fellow fromage! 🧀🦇🧀
Same. 😂
OK Kate, but counterpoint... mmmmmmmmmmmmm, cheese!
(ie, Renegades love you for who you are)

Wow that was so great, thank you, probably the most relaxing 45 mins in years
Thanks for the perspective and analysis from a trained professional pianist. Great breakdown.

This!
Didn't Ren study music theory in university? He might not be classically trained at playing the piano, but I bet he could write his score sheets haha

Ren admits he is just a student of the piano. Does a great job.
Ren is a Genius❤ thanks Robbie always appreciate your smart reactions❤
It’s wild that even though it’s just an instrumental I can hear words. I swear Ren composes his music to go with his lyrics.
Commenting before I even watch lol. I am so excited to watch this. I have been dying to see you react to this since your Hi Ren reaction.

Would be interested to see a similar upload looking at the piano (and strings) on Money Game part 3.
What a lovely piece, and thank you for the break-down. I’ve been on and off piano since childhood, and now looking forward to getting back into it.
