  • Yes, it's true. Kyle Petty was once a legitimate title contender in the early '90s.

Kyle honestly wasn't as bad as everyone makes him out to be now. He was honestly average, and fell victim to being stuck with bad equipment when he went back to Petty, and then I think he lost any passion for the sport once he lost Adam.

    • @vortex9232
      @vortex9232 4 года назад +12

Equipment is a big factor. Kyle should have taken the Robert Yates ride after Allison's death. I truly believe he would have won a championship and had many more wins if he went that route.

    • @CobaltCharger
      @CobaltCharger 4 года назад +5

Worse thing he ever did was merge Pe2 back into his father's, it had potential when he partnered with Bobby Kennedy. He probably did loose desire after Adam, but it also didn't didn't help that while driving, he also was trying to turn the operation around trying to modernize the team. Facing opposition the entire time...

I met Kyle when I was about 11 or 12 at New Hampshire on pit road not long after Adam passed away at that track. He was super cool and gave me the time of day more than any other early 2000's NASCAR driver many of which I was able to get autographs from. I remember Kyle telling me to hold the Sharpie pointing down toward the ground in my pocket to keep the ink from running out as fast. Good man. Now I'm a guitar player and so is Kyle!

Pretty much; he lost his love to race. After that he just drove to keep the team going but his lack of drive was evident. 2007 Coke 600 was a nice farewell though. Still wish luck had came around and knocked Mears and Yelley out just for him.

    • @bparks_5095

Redfire 03 SVT I believe the story was that Kyle was just kind of keeping the seat warm for Adam. Dad would retire soon after the 4th generation was ready for Cup. The buzz of anticipation and all the hypothetical 'air' went out of that camp when Adam died.
Two generational NASCAR families lost their brightest lights at the wrong time in quick succession. Its a very sudden and sad end. Too many lost that way, including Kenny Irwin that same year, coincidentally in Kyle's old ride. Lee Petty died earlier that same year. Its a wonder how any of them kept it together after such a year.

Kyle Petty was a beast at Rockingham and at Dover and he could really wheel that great looking Mello Yello Pontiac, he had two of the best crew chiefs in the business Gary Nelson and Robin Pemberton and he had a longshot to win the 1992 championship and would have won the Chase had there been a Chase in 1992 under the original format, the original 10 driver format that is, not the win and you're in style of today.

Kyle had 2 big faults in his career: 1. He drove most of his prime years for teams either on the decline or on the up; never had a top ride. He spent several years at Petty once they started to fall; was at Wood Bros when they were meh at best, and had to grow Felix's team up from the bottom. He had no top rides to race with and produce but when he was left alone he could do stuff. Just imagine though if in 1990 or 94 he raced for Hendrick in the 5, or took over for filled in for Irvan in 95? He coulda won a title perhaps in 1991 if he stayed healthy or maybe contended in the mid 90's in the 88 instead of Dale. Sabco let him down once Mello Yello left and their rides were awful. Not saying he coulda excelled post 93 but he did win 1 in 95 so who knows.
He also had his dad's shadow over him; that was inevitable but it was not really fair to him either. He wasn't his dad but he didn't need to be he made himself a success his own way. Def not a bust; there are several other ones who did though with a name to follow like Jon Wood or Justin Labonte, Dale Jarret's son, or even Steven Wallace lol.

He won at Dover in 1995. From 1994 on he had a lot of 30+ place finishes but the odd good result mixed in. He often performed a bit better, relatively, at the harder tracks. To be honest I think either injuries, or a lack of focus when he was actually behind the wheel (he was doing A TON of stuff outside of racing) contributed to the regression.

Nice video but it doesn't even coming close to documenting how good Kyle's 1993 Season should've been:
Daytona 500: On the pole, ran upfront all day. Got crashed out late thanks to Bobby Hillin.
Should've easily finished in top 10. Finished 31st - A lose of approx. 70 points
Rockingham: Had one, if not fastest car of the day. A engine issue caused him to loose many laps.
    Easily a top 3 finish. Finished 32nd - A lose of over 100 points
Dover in June: Took the lead, him and Brett Bodine had two fastest cars in the field. He crashed with Dave Marcis.
Easy Top 5 gone. Finished 29th - A lose of approx another 100 Winston Cup points
Daytona in July: Qualified outside pole position. Ran in lead draft until got in a wreck.
Finished 33rd - A lose of approx 100 more Winston Cup Points
Pocono in July: Had the field covered. A broken clutch forced him to garage. He returned many laps down
Finished 27th - Easily lose of 100 points
Watkins Glen : An awesome race that saw Kyle leading, pulling away with 6 laps to when he caught the crub. Spun and took Earnhardt
out with him. I was only 10 years old cheering for Kyle in the closing laps and still mad to this day about this race he lost.
    Finished 26th - 100 more points lost
Bristol Night Race: Kyle worked his way up to running around 3rd or 4th after starting 20th. Simply lost it off the turn, crashed!
Finished 30th - Approx. 100 more points gone away
I understand a driver is gonna have some bad luck, bad races, crashes. I didn't count all Kyle's misfortunes of 1993 but let's do the math:
That's roughly 670 more Winston Cup Points Kyle could easily have earned during the season. He lost the championship to Earnhardt by 666. You can't say he would've won the 1993 title if these incidents hadn't happened. It's easy and fun to dream what could've been. I feel pretty comfortable to say Kyle would have finished no worse than 3rd and definitely should've won a few more races. I miss his fun Mello Yello days and thanks for the childhood memories Kyle. I was a huge fan

I don't know if its collectible because of 90s aesthetic value, or the fact it was the only time he was very good.

Way better than most know! He was never in top notch equipment. Put him in the 28 or with Hendrick and he wins a lot of races. Maybe a championship. I was surprised he never got a top ride. Rick H should have hired him over shrader. Imo

Should have stuck with Sabco, as much as I love the Hot Wheels car he drove for PE, that was the beginning of the downturn of Kyle Petty's career.

Sabvo wasn't as good after crew chief Gary Nelson was hired by Nascar to be their Chief car inspector. He was almost good as Chad Knaus is at cheating up a car without getting caught. That's why Nascar wanted him as their Chief inspector because he knew what to look for

Yeah he's far from a HOFer, like no shit, but the only reason he gets as much crap as he does is because of his name. If his name was Kyle Jones we'd look back on a decent career with 8 wins, none of which where for his family's team.
No doubt his name helped him, but after a certain point you have to prove yourself and he did. No doubt his career should've ended around 1999 or so, the name helped him prolong his career, and that's a fair criticism, but to say he was awful throughout his entire career is just not true.

In my opinion he wasnt a bad driver but he could have benn better if he races more in the ARCA series or in the Nascar K&N pro series he maybe had more success in the cup series and more carrer wins but he was still a good driver

85, 86, & 87 driving for The Wood Brothers in the #7 and 92-93 driving the 42 for SABCO were Kyle's best years. Kyle never went anywhere with Petty Enterprises...in fact no one but Richard has gone anywhere with Petty Enterprises/Motorsports.

I think Kyle Petty's career went downhill a bit after losing Robin Pemberton after 1993. His performance dropped off a bit in 1994 and then he won his last race in 1995. I would say him being a driver/owner hurt his career, but like others have said, Adam's death really hurt his career. Him being an owner/driver was a big trend then but I think it was a lateral move for Adam's career to where he would build up the team for Adam to move into once he was ready and then New Hampshire 2000 happened, and it hurt what he (presumably) had in place. I really hate it that Kyle didn't have a longer competitive career and didn't get to build a team for his son to succeed with, but I'm glad he's working in TV as an outspoken voice and is raising a family with his new wife. He deserves good things in his life imo.
