I love the micro-immersion way of learning. Because it allows me to be lazy and the language surround me.

One thing I noticed about myself was I have kind of gone through different phases, like in the beginning I listened to a lot of music and movies, I did try to translate some songs by myself and I bought lesson books (which still remain unfinished, because I felt like I knew the basics already, even though ideally I needed more reinforcement and practice with it). For the longest time I felt like reading in Spanish was a burden and I wouldn't even bother if I saw Spanish comments on a video, for instance. I also spent over 12-13 years not even speaking Spanish out loud? I'm not very social so that's another reason. But my parents do speak Spanish, so not that much of an excuse.
My advice would be to learn in a various of ways, get an easy novel or book, watch series, listen to music, learn the grammar and also practice speaking without being too worried and obsessed about making mistakes. I'm finally at a point where I'm improving in the areas I was lacking, especially reading and speaking. But I did go several years kind of neglecting certain areas of learning, I could've been further along by now if I had been giving it my all. But it's all a process anyway.

my BIGGEST krptonite is consistency. the passion doesn't die, I just get in my head and go into overdrive of the goals i want to hit (I'm a damn perfectionist ugh) and end up getting overstimulated and bottoming out smh lol lawd

I have one tip however : in French, when we say _À tout à l'heure_ , that means the person will have an appointment on the very same day, or, logically, in the same hour (hence the "heure"). In your case, it would be better to say _À plus tard_ , which literally translates to "See you later" ;

Pero, si it is sometimes scary but i literally have been putting myself out there and trying to speak to every spanish speaking personin spanish when i tell you each one has been kind and helpful and this has helped me to improve. I go to my local Hispanic stores and this helps me to so yes doing that and making the language apart of your life does help

Woah this is crazy, I just looked this up and you happened to have uploaded this video today.
My biggest difficulty with language learning is spending too much time learning languages. I realized as I did an exchange year that after speaking in a foreign language, I had nothing to talk about besides my life, because I'd spent all my time learning the language. I couldn't even tell people my hobby was language learning because that language was my first language learnt, and it just wasn't impressive to speak two languages since it's nearly expected.
And so I began a third to which I've been spending my summer towards. As well as a fourth that I haven't worked on in a long time but can still mostly understand everything I hear. But what I really want to be doing is learning Hungarian -- but every time I try to learn Hungarian I get distracted by Japanese, because it is just that cute.
So I end up spending my whole day learning languages, and it is a privilege and I do see the progress -- but ultimately... I wonder if it's become an unhealthy hobby. I want to learn science but I can't balance learning science and learning languages, because one of them takes over my life for an extended period of time.

learn science in one of your target languages! then you’ll be able to talk about more than just your like, you’ll be able to talk about your other hobby, science, too!
That's truly the essence of hobbies. There are periods of waxing and waning just like the moon. When I was in high school, I would crochet the most during the summer, write fiction during the school year, and read for pleasure throughout. Neither hobby fully went away but letting a hobby go dark for a brief time allows for the full light on another.
I too have a struggle to keep to one language but I think as long as the first is at a comfortable level, you can pick it back up after leaving it for a bit so you can dip your toes into another. Bonus points if you can get materials to learn the new language in the older one. For example, Japanese is difficult to read without furugana on the kanji but paired with a language that uses the same script as English, like Spanish or German, makes it easier to look up the words you should be learning if you don't also recognize them in Japanese. I read Spanish translations of manga a whole lot faster than the raws (when it has yet to be translated into English) even though I don't have the amount of vocabulary involved.

Also it sounds like you're doing what you love and most people spend their lifetime searching for that kind of passion. I love the comments below - learning science in your target language would be a really great way to combine an old passion with a new one!

My native tongue is Spanish ( I’m from Puerto Rico) and I learned English on my own when I was in my teens. I’m learning the same way I learned English to my French journey, listening music, watching tons of tv series in French, getting on French tik tok lives. I will follow your advice on getting a tutor cuz like you said we can get on our ways of learning. Thank you for the video !!

I've been learning Italian on my own for a while now, I'm now at the point where i can try forming some sentences and vocab sticks a little better, but I notice that I mainly tend to 'translate' while i talk, meaning that i can make a sentence by translating it from my own language word for word. This means that when i listen to italian, I tend to lag behind in understanding because i'm still translating the words i recognise, instead of actually knowing them. It's making me a little bit frustrated, because i feel like it's not getting any better with practice. I know i should be patient but sometimes it can feel a bit hopeless😅
I'm so glad you pointed this out! Because learning Korean is not at all like it was learning French & Spanish...whew chile! My brain hurts. But I love it so much!

@sweetzs100 That's awesome! Wishing you the best. I double majored in French & Spanish in Uni, and lived abroad. But, honestly, Netflix, Spotify, and talking to friends were my go-to! I have to study with Korean though. This is very different!

Ohhhh a great idea !!!
For people who can't travel and don't really have anywhere near them that they can reach that might have their target language in the wild, there are actually videos/streams of people walking around grocery stores, or streets, or museums etc which can be helpful. Especially since some of them are for people who are interested in that country and its culture where the person filming might spend a bit of extra time looking at things closely. As well as being able to look at and read things, you can also usually hear people around. Closest thing to actually going somewhere when you can't go yourself.
It also turned out, after many stops and starts with languages that for me it was actually better to learn more than one language at a time because even when I might be feeling a bit demotivated with one I'm usually still motivated with another and then I might see something in that language that reminds me of something in another which can boost that motivation and then I'm actually consistent. It has it's limitations, obviously I'll probably gain proficiency more slowly than someone studying just one language, it's time consuming, it takes extra energy, and I have to be careful about which ones I'm doing at the same time (avoiding anything too similar), but if it's between that and giving up without meaning to I'll take the downsides just so I can actually stick with it.

I have been learning German for about a year now and majority of the time I get overwhelmed and easily distracted on what I should learn. My main goal is that I want to be able to speak to my German friend in German! I thought that would be quite interesting, plus traveling to Germany would be a dream come true! However, I keep getting distracted on what to learn and those articles always get me. Regardless of all of this going down, I am highly motivated to keep learning German! But it helped me learn new phrases and my German friend always helps me with about everything! Sometimes I feel as though I have not gotten better at my German

I’m glad I found this channel! I’m on my journey to learn Italian and Dutch. Apart from keeping practicing English. :) I'm living in the Netherlands but as a native Portuguese speaker, considering studying Belgian Dutch because of your videos 😅 the accent is softer and easier for me to speak.

This is probably the most honest and truest things to know about learning languages.
I have a problem. I can basically understand Latin languages, but can't speak them 😂. I like to text my friend in broken Italian, it's a beautiful language ❤
I've been busting my @$$ on Mandarin for 9 years and it's always a work in progress. I can read articles, text friends and communicate decently on day to day topics
My tips
1# don't look at others progress.
2# make your own friends that like you for you, not your language level.
3# mix formal study with casual TV, songs, podcasts, reading fun articles.
4# have other things that you like about the culture, food, music, movies, openness of the people, ect.
5# there are nice and sucky people in every language and culture, find the good ones.
This is so encouraging. I’m learning Spanish in college and I get headaches and I know it’s because I’m learning something so new. But I didn’t know it was a thing others felt. I will- take a nap lol when it gets super bleh now
I’m always exhausted when I learn a new language intensely, I really think it’s because things are under construction lol

@@jofranco yes pronunciation in speaking Italian or Spanish with rolling r’s and feeling like fraud is where I have difficulty. I am planning a trip to Italy in September and I am nowhere near confident about even speaking Italian to find out where the bathroom is! lol I can understand more than I can speak it. Thank you so much for this! The thing about the naps,... wow! I have never heard anybody say that before, but it makes so much sense. While learning a language, you are actually building tons of new connections in your brain and that is super exhausting. This is why you need sleep. Also sleep is where the growth happens, because in your sleep your brain is actively solidifying the new neural pathwas, which is so cool! So yay for naps!
I'm currently learning Spanish, and struggling a lot with the verb conjugations, do you have any specific tips to tackle this?
Ohhhhh the verbbbbbs, that's something you have to drill into your brain with some good ol' fashion verb charts, and I find physically moving around while learning helps me memorize. So weird right?
Hmm sometimes I really worry during speak time with various people particularly if I have not enough experience with this language which I'm learning and in my opinion your advice able help to me becomes more good at all my languages which I'm learning and yes thank you for this wonderful video

PS I’m an American who survived high school Spanish and several failed attempts to get A1 level….now trying to land on A2
My biggest issue is spending time with ONE language. Ive taken french and spanish in school and also learned spanish with coworkers. Ive taken japanese, tagalog (i lived in the Philippines for a year,) Russian and Tsalagi with the Cherokee nation. Its like trying to decide which child Is like to spend time with. But what happens is that I get scattered or overwhelmed and then I learn very little. Id like to get more fluent in Spanish (which is funny because I've had like five years of French and used to speak it pretty well,) and we have so many Filipinos around me so I'd like to learn that. The Cherokee Nation is losing their elders and so I would love to help keep the language alive. Russian is just freaking cool. And my daughter wants to learn Japanese for school so we bought a system for her to continue since she was using apps last year. The only thing I've been doing when I'm not too tired and skip the class is the tsalagi class. But it's recorded so I can always go back and look and I've taken all three levels before.
so yeah I'm kind of at a loss as to how to get through this stalemate. Plus I'm a perfectionist and want to be fluent and everything and I don't think that's realistic but i want it to be. I have dreams in which I am speaking with somebody in their language automatically and it's so awesome
For me I always struggle with that initial phase, like the times I’ve tried to commit to a language a really struggle with staying engaged to initially learn enough vocabulary to be useable in a even barley conversational way. Idk if that’s just me not having the proper motivations or discipline or something but it’s something I always struggle with regardless.

Unfunny fact of the day: Dutch and Flemish sound like the same language, but they're two different dialects where the words might be different (similar to British and American english).
the fact you said "unfunny fact" somehow made me think this comment was funny lol.
Americans can understand the British though and the British can understand us because we still speak the same language though. We just have different accents, slang, and different words for certain things. So if it was really like that, then Dutch and Flemish shouldn’t be two separate languages.

Hey Jo,. I have kind of a random question for you. If you can't answer it, well then maybe someone else will read it. I am going on a solo travel to Corfu in September. First time to this island and first time traveling by myself. I am 47 so it's about time i do this haha. I really want to try to set up some Greek lessons local. Of course i am willing to pay for lunch and make it a nice experience for both of us. I don't know how or where to look and so maybe you have some tips to where i might be able to find someone willing to teach a couple times during my 12 day stay. I've been trying to learn for a little while now, but i am a tiny bit stuck. Oh my God I NEEDED this video. So I've been learning Hindi now since a few months ago and I've only been using Duolingo because I wanted to master the Devanagari(alphabet system) first. I've been doing good in terms of learning the alphabet but I just sometimes feel like I'm not doing enough because I don't use books or practise with a tutor (I don't want to burden my family by asking them for money so I plan on doing that next year) it's also very hard to find resources and pen pals for Hindi so I can't even practise with someone. I sometimes feel like I should just stop learning it for now and resume it next year but I also don't want to slow things down for me. I do understand some words because I've been watching Bollywood movies for years and I've listen to lots of Hindi songs too. What should I do?

Except that I'm 2 and a half years in and I'm still struggling, especially with comprehension and speaking (because I really haven't been able to) spending many hours a day (usually reading) I've gained many words the past couple months. On LingQ I've added 24,000 "words" if anyone uses LingQ you know what I mean by words.. word families.. phrases.. ect
It is my dream to go to and live in Brazil :')

I’m curious how you keep up with all of the other languages that you’ve learned. When you’re spending so much energy into a new language, how do you retain the others? I would absolutely love to be a polyglot. My top three languages right now that I’m trying to learn are Spanish, Japanese, and German. I’ve tried learning lessons simultaneously, but now I think I’m going to try and master Spanish first and move to the others later. Do you have an opinion on this method?
Pimsleur is the only language learning app/site that has helped me tremendously. I love that I can learn it on the go, but can also take my own written notes and there are vocab and written quizzes after each audible lesson. It’s so true that what helps one of us doesn’t necessarily help the other. Love the idea of having a tutor though and will need to look into this option as I progress. I so appreciate your content! You are very inspiring!
Learning a new language is very hard. I started learning Greek and it won't stick. Does the technique living, breathing, and thinking only in that language help? Or do you take breaks and return to your native language?

To me it sounds like you don't use babbel or rosette stone which sounds really hard the way you are doing it and amazing
I think it’s important to note that not everyone learns the same. I feel like I learned nothing with Rosetta Stone, Babbel, or Duolingo, but I’m absolutely loving Pimsleur.
Great video . How many days/hours do you have lessons?
I'll do 1 lesson a week on busy weeks, 50 min max. Sometimes I do a sprint of daily or as close to daily lessons as possible, but it's usually rare because I have so many other things on my plate. But I do self study daily even if for 5 minutes.
My grandmother was from belgium. The funny thing is is that she never spoke Flemish to us. So what happened is when I was out one day at a home store, I heard a man speaking a language to his daughter. It wasn't Eastern European but it was definitely European. It wasn't French and it wasn't German and it didn't seem to be any language that I had been exposed to. Definitely wasn't Scandinavian. So I had a thought and I turned around and asked him what he was speaking and he said flemish. I told him I knew it! Because it was my grandmother's language and she never spoke it around me and I've heard every language spoken pretty much except hers. Add French in school, my grandmother was happy because I think she regretted never teaching us anything and then as she was elderly she realized she had made a mistake

I'm learning Spanish and I do really well with Duolingo practice tests but when I try learning through actual speakers of the language, I can't seem to keep up especially with pronunciation.

They're always around me - right now I'm in Antwerp so I'm practicing my Dutch, but tomorrow I go to Greece so it'll be a switch, my friends speak to me in all their different languages and I watch and listen to content from abroad daily. It's taken a while to design my life to be this multilingual but it's totally doable and the best

Hi! It really depends on which one you think will be more connected with your life choices in the near future - are you traveling somewhere it’s spoken? Do you have Spanish or french speakers near you? There’s no right answer but the languages were more exposed to are usually the best languages to invest time in learning - only if you love them or find something to love about the culture/people/place

From English, teach slang and proverbs and scientific, educational, mythological, artistic, sporting and gastronomic jargon.
And teach mainly the languages that vice masters very well, let's say 90% or more so as not to forget them, then this gives you the strength to learn languages that vice now considers to be the most difficult.
