Sweet selection of card choices mate, shadow is a really novel way of getting into the red zone while keeping the soldier subtypes intact. Looking forward to the rest of the series
Thank you - I was a little worries about shadow originally as a mechanic, but after playtesting it's certainly not as abusive as originally thought. It's been a lot of fun to build and the power level of pauper has been the biggest eye opener to me from this whole series.
Boros soldiers is one of my favourite archetypes to the point where I've jammed it into my 720 card legacy -ish cube... Also, no raise the alarm?
If I open up a 2 drop slot I'll make sure raise the alarm goes in there, but at the time I could only pick 2 from cenn's enlistment, battle screech and raise the alarm, which I felt was a pretty straight forward decision. I'll see how testing goes, but I'll keep my foil copy on the side just in case I decide I need it in there.
Great Pauper Cube white card list!
This is going to be so helpful with my Pauper cube! I started building one when you started the series. This series has definitely been helpful in building it and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the colors!
Sorry the series has taken longer than I initially wanted but I'll try and get all the colours out one day after the other. Glad you're finding it useful for yours. Send me a cubetutor link when you're done with it, would love to see how you decided to make yours
Really appreciate your videos, the commentary you give on each card gave me something to think about for my pauper cube, Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that you're finding them useful! Have you got a link for your cube or are you currently in the building stages?
I curate a couple of cubes for my playgroup, a pauper and a powered. Both have been complete for several years, though they're never done as with any cube. I just updated the pauper with Masters 25, it's a 405 size cube, that link is www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/11076 It runs pretty well, fun to play, and I have had a good time foiling it out on the cheap. The pauper cube feels a lot more skill intensive then my powered and I have heard that comment many times while drafting it from my players. I love it a lot more than my powered to be honest.
I have left out most of the shadow/hexproof creatures for power reasons. I am interested to see how your cube performs with them in it and it may sway me to add some back in as they have been gone for quite a while. Your argument that there is enough removal is probably valid but I am not entirely onboard :)
That's a really cool gig you've got there! Certainly will agree with you that pauper cube certainly can be a lot more skill intensive and to be honest, I prefer this variant of magic.
Haha, well hopefully you'll see them be "fair" in the gameplay's I'm intending to do in the future.I'm certainly looking forward to trying to foil out my cube too!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate the effort that you are putting into these videos, I just watched the red list today. I cannot wait until we get to see gameplay videos!!!
Awesome vid Mark. I’m looking forward to the rest of the colours in your cube.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Are you building a cube or have built one?
I started building a regular cube a while ago. But ended up using most of the pieces for Commander decks. But the Pauper cube is something I am seriously thinking of starting. I’m really enjoying the content, and you’ve given me a bunch of ideas Mark.
It's not badly priced and the gameplay is a lot of fun!
It’ll be fun just looking through my collection and finding some awesome pauper cards. Turning bulk into treasure.
That's what I ended up doing with mine. So many great cards just lying around. Only really bought about 1/2 the cards for the cube
Looking forward to the rest of this series! I build cubes on blocks that have rotated out so I can relive those limited environments for the future (and I particularly like chaos cube sealed with a pool shared of three of these blocks!). It will be a lot more difficult to do so in future now that there is only 1 set per block from dominaria, so in future Il probably move on to try building a pauper cube, a whole format from scratch.
Set cube's are great fun and can't blame you for building those! Which set has been your favourite to draft?
I think you'll enjoy a pauper cube, it's a very manageable cost and a lot more powerful than people give it credit for being just commons. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Wow, that is a lot of removals! Would love to see some gameplay soon!
Pauper has a huge amount of great removal spells - for the size of the cube it seems about right, especially as white's secondary role is control. Gameplay is certainly on the cards once I've finished these videos and done the challenger deck gameplay videos ready for release.
Great video and has made me think about some of the cards in my cube. I would be tempted to change Territorial Hammerskull with Kor Hookmaster. Its not as good because it doesnt tap on attack but is better for the blink deck and it is a soldier. Also Topan Freeblade is a nice 2 drop soldier that might work in your cube
One way to push Auras as an archetype is to run some Bestow creatures. There are some that are almost good enough on their own, but the added flexibility makes them certainly contenders.
I'm also not sure if the shadow theme in B and W is a good idea - it could lead to frustrating gameplay with many non-interactive games. Definitely has to be tested.
Bestow creatures are certainly a good shout, I know I do need to add ethereal armor as I forgot about that card until I played it in a pauper game. Shadow thankfully isn't just in those colours, plus with the large amount of removal it shouldn't be too much of a problem. That being said, I will be keeping an eye on it. It's not a theme I've put in, rather just a few cards.
Thanks for starting this series. Have you thought about adding Order of Leitbur to your Cube?
Glad you're enjoying it - I personally haven't as first of all I didn't know about it, but for me not being a soldier does let it down a smidge. That being said the pump ability and giving it first strike is pretty cool! Thanks for suggesting it, I'll keep it on a list of things to look at if some cards underperform.
I also don't know how I feel about empyrial armor. I don't see white having alot of cards in hand, and blue white control isn't going to want to enchant its creature for a 2 for 1. If they want to enchant, it would be like a card draw enchantment.
I think you should look at graceful reprieve and angelic renewal to support blue white flicker. I didn't see that many. Watching your blue video now ;)
I think I need to bring in ethereal armor as I forgot about that one for an enchantments deck payoff card.
Life Begins At 20 oh yes that enchantment is a beast. By itself it’s +1/0 first strike for 1 mana which is playable. Any more enchantment just breaks it
I really don't know what I would take out? But hopeful Eidolon is a great one/four drop! But I realize when you build pauper cube, you have to change your way of thinking from regular cube, because your strategies are different.
I'll give it a look bud, thanks for the suggestion!
I personally don't like the suspend shade. 4 mana for a 1/1 that you can pump is pretty meh. And the suspend is so late game. Take a look at Frontline Strategist. Morph, soldier theme, one side fog.
Loyal Pegasus is pretty strong aggro too.
I really like Loyal Cathar, 2 bodies for 2 mana.
Thank you both - I'll certainly take a better look at those two.
I've heard of 360 and 720 cubes. But why build a cube with 405 cards?
I did a video in that series about the size of a cube. 405 allows for a little variation in an 8 man draft, while still allowing me to play all the different draft variants with 2,3 and 4 players.
Life Begins At 20 oh cool. maybe I'll make my 360 into a 405 as well. Gives me some room to try a few cards to. Thnx!
NOOO!!! You simplified journey to nowhere and are misplaying it! It is two separate triggers that can be responded to independently. When the first line enters the stack and you remove it somehow, it’s second line enters the stack. So before you even select a target, you return it and then exile a creature.
