I love this crazy French violinist who has become part of my musical life. Well, let's face it, music is part of what defines me, and this incredible fusion enhances my life each day. Magnifique!
That album, along with Imaginary Voyage, also included Daryl Steurmer on guitar- they trade off a lot of solos, with minimal ego attached. Those albums have held up very well over more than 30 years!
Merci.
They had these great quality videos here in youtube of him playing with Stanley and Al. They've all been removed. I love Ponty. Because of him I started to listen jazz. I've been like in 8 of his concerts through the years, more than any artist of any kind of music I've seen. Thanks for your music Maestro Jean Luc Ponty.
Jean Luc Ponti kennen weinig mensen in Nederland. Groetjes Rob
To have seen this man live in Montreal is one of the highlights of my life. He has such charisma on stage and exudes the powerhouse that he is but in an ever so humble way. Also great interaction with Stanley Clarke and Bela Fleck (Trio!).
wow!!!! he is a very good player, well everyone in this song, is amazing, mercie Jean for all your talent and your good music, love from Panama, hope that someday, he could play here
Voila! Beautiful bit of drumming there, smooth and subtle, no showy pyrotechnics like some drummers (no names!). All in all superb music, merci! sd goh (malaysia)
Jean, I've loved your music since hearing it on Birmingham Alabama's K99 FM album station back in 1978. Late one night they spun Cosmic Messenger. I went out the next day searching for that album. I've loved it ever since and almost everything else you've done since. Thanks for the YEARS of great music! Love ya man Hugh
My fav of LP was in a small venue in Royal Oak MI when he Ralph Armstrong and a great drummer ( cannot remember his name) but what a great concert. I have seen JLP in big and small venues he is always fantastic. Bill
Yeah, some of the most adventuresome, tasty music came out of Jazz in the 70s -And, what a time for Jean Luc in '76, with "Imaginary Voyage" and "Enigmatic Ocean" in '77 -And, hey, ya gotta love Thierry Arpino's work on traps here -Delicious!...
I am very sorry, dugdad58 then I am wrong! Enigmatic Ocean is one of the very best. On March 20, 2010 I saw and met Jean Luc at Jazz Masters Maastricht/Holland again. The pieces he played were brilliant!! Thanks to Wolfgang Dauner too!
I love the album version as much as anyone, but I like that he chose to interpret it as more of a straight-ahead jazz samba here. It almost feels and sounds more like late 60's acoustic modern jazz than late 70's fusion.
that is exactly a quote from Montana, and Ponty was on the Overnite Sensation album, so there can be no doubt. less inspiration, more just having fun with a musical quote that fans would easily catch, I would think
I agree, Will check out Trilok Gurto,.. Mahavishna Orchestra goes without saying.I've Been into John and Company since a buddy turned me on many moons ago. What do you think of Cobham's solo work? Check out Roy Buchanan, Masiah come again, Amazing Guitar work. Peace
@jcgrof Are you talking about Ponty here? I'd always been under the impression that he is French. It's also what they say on Wikipedia. Avranches, France, his birthplace. What do you know that Wikipedia does not? :~)
Please don't use that word when you don't like it. I really love Jean Luc and his music too much, since I met him in the Rotterdam Jazzclub B-14 in the early 70s.
un seul mot: SUPERBE, JEAN LUC PONTY avec cette superbe rythmique THIERRY ARPINO(grand batteur) ,et GUY N'SANGUE avec qui j'ai joué il y a quelques années et qui est fantastique! Anyone else think that the head of this tune kinda sounds like the intro to 'Montana' by Frank Zappa? If you search there's a video of Jean Luc Ponty himself playing it when he was with Zappa's group. Maybe he took some inspiration from it?
Je suis mexicain et j'ai 17 ans. Je peux dire que cette chanson est incroyable, bravo Jean👏. 🇫🇷💪
I used to listen to Enigmatic Ocean in the 70's but.....seeing this drummer.WOW!!!!!! He is off the charts
I became a fan at 20 I'm 69 now and still love his music and by the way this is a classic ❤❤❤

Jean-luc Ponty was the drum'n'bass of the 1970s. So good.
That album, along with Imaginary Voyage, also included Daryl Steurmer on guitar- they trade off a lot of solos, with minimal ego attached. Those albums have held up very well over more than 30 years!
had the pleasure of seeing him at a club on the water in san diego back in 84. what a perfect afternoon. he has his own place in the fusion world.

Great Music is made by Great Bands
Espectacular
There's a banner in the background that looks like it says Jazz Jamboree '99. Visible after the performance when Ponty is introducing the band.
WOW!this is tooooooo coooooooooool!
I love Jean Luc!
That is some awesome stuff right there.
Right you are..Daryl did play on Enigmatic Ocean....Amazing how many people only know him from Genesis.
I met Thierry a few months ago, playing with Burr Johnson, another mother! Top Notch!!
I LOVE this song!!!
ENIGMATIC OCEAN WAS RECORDED IN 1977. This video is NOT from 1977 obviously, but the piece is from 1977.
On drums .....Thierry Arpino
that grin on the drummers face at 5:20 after his solo was contagious.
CLASSIC TUNE BY JLP AND BAND!!!
Dont forget Allan Holdsworth played guitar on the Enigmatic Ocean album also mate....... Stunning soloing from him throughout the album
saw them yesterday in oberkochen (BW, germany).... great combo
sick drummer
un vrai talent !
Wonderful music!

I used to have several of JLP's recordings on CD. I lost them all in a house fire.

The drummer is Thierry Arpino! Great drummer and a sweetheart of a guy! :)

What do you think of Cobham's solo work? Check out Roy Buchanan, Masiah come again, Amazing Guitar work. Peace
yeaaahh!
I think Daryl Stuermer played on this album.
this is the best version of mirage even better than the studio
this piece of art I listened in a friends apartment in Brighton at 1979 can you estimate my age?
What, no guitar player? Hello? What was needed here was Daryl Stuermer's work from the Enigmatic Ocean album. This just wasn't the same.
@jcgrof Are you talking about Ponty here? I'd always been under the impression that he is French. It's also what they say on Wikipedia. Avranches, France, his birthplace. What do you know that Wikipedia does not? :~)
Still good!
Please don't use that word when you don't like it. I really love Jean Luc and his music too much, since I met him in the Rotterdam Jazzclub B-14 in the early 70s.
@tonyaellora yes, claudia ponty is a piano player

He is BELGE, BORN IN BELGIQUE.

i wore out enigmatic ocean in my 8 track player!
I like to transcribe this song
♥♥♥♥♥
It's like "Kansas" without vocals.
I'd like to hear how kid drummer Igor Falecki would sound with JLP
@gebass6 @iloverune Me too! Get your ARRP cards yet? LoL
FUCK i listened to this when i was like 10 or 11 years old , im 15 now and its so nostalgic to hear this again
muito legal
Is it just my imagination, or does Ponty end up quoting Holdsworth's licks from the original album at various points?
French speaking english is funny kkkk great JLP
Yes it 2024😂
who's the drummer! He's such a cutie!
