Before he turned them into the Death Guard, the Dusk Raiders used diverse tactics, specialising in low casualty, highly successful hist and run shock tactics and surgical use of overwhelming firepower. If you judge him by the outcome of his actions, then he absolutely did something wrong. He ignored his fathers direct orders, and ruined the human webway project. Could this have been avoided by the emperor explaining what the fuck he was doing on terra? Yes, potentially. In my mind however, the reason magnus reacted the way he did, be it how he reacted to Horus falling, Lehman coming for him, or the shattering of his soul, ALL of those reactions are based in a deep seated arrogance and self entitlement. Magnus is smart as fuck, to the point I’d rank him top 5 most intelligent primarchs overall. He knew of other ways to achieve his goals yet he did what he did because he thought he could either get away with it, or arrogantly assumed he was doing nothing potentially dangerous. They started out really great and well respected, then got worse and worse as they were split apart and relegated to the hardest and/or least interesting campaigns. While other legions attained glory and fame the Iron Warriors became increasingly bitter and resentful.
Perturabo shook things up a bit and reset some of that deterioration. He didn't go about it in the best way, but he did breathe enough life back into the legion and give them enough flexibility to last another few hundred years.
Eventually that same bitterness that had nearly destroyed the Iron Warriors overcame Perturabo as well. It's all basically just classic PTSD except that he's superhuman and had nearly absolute authority. And, of course therapy doesn't exist in 40k.

I imagine him actually building virtually unassailable defenses on the first few planets he conquered only to have them rebel a few decades later and then he has to destroy his own creations and takes massive losses specifically because he built the defenses he was up against. Which would explain why he doesn't do that anymore.

Magnus truly loved his sons, and his sons loved him too. He did everything for them and his sons did everything to save him. In a place of demons and evil, they're the ones who can actually forgive each other and some still retain their honor. The goals of the Thousand Sons are either save their father or legion, almost all their lore and books about them are just their selfless goals, almost none of them sought power for selfish goals or desire, everything was for their legion. Perhaps their love for each other turned them evil, to fight the fate set for your legion will surely break you. Many of the TS, for their love of their father, died reclaiming the shards of Magnus and trying to fix his soul. Amon in his grief and love for his brothers just wanted it all to end, to break the rubric and finally destroy his beloved legion, the thousand sons, so that all of them might finally find rest and peace. Ahriman is fighting fate, doing everything so that none of the remaining TS can be claimed by Chaos. He was horrified seeing them become deamon princes and mutated creatures, seeing these turned love into obsession. He became obsessed and will do anything to prevent this, kinda like the Emperor who will commit horrible atrocities to save mankind. Magnus inherited that obsession from the Emperor, and Ahriman inherited that obsession from Magnus. Truly like father like son.

I would boil it down to this:
    - Without the Primarchs, no Horus heresy.
    - Without the Primarchs, Human Webway and stagnating Chaos influence.
    - If instead of making Primarchs Daddy E had concocted gene soups (without all the idiotic flaws), it might not have been flung across the galaxy and he could have then used that to fix and restock the legions, no need for Primarchs to donate their seed.
    - without the Primarchs leadership by merit and not birth giving them more chances to be effective on their own instead of doing weird shit because their Primarch has a fetish.
So yeah, in general I'd say all of the legions would have greatly benefited from not having Primarchs. And so would the rest of the Galaxy.

Strategically speaking. The Imperium would have been so much better off having periods of consolidation after each small expansion.
You can't just conquer a hundred thousand worlds in 5 minutes(relatively speaking) and expect everything to stay stable. The astartes would have most likely been better off without the primarchs and if the emporer stayed with them a bit longer. He had to fuck off to get the webway sure. But if he hung around a little bit longer until things had settled down a bit, it could have all worked out. I mean without the primarchs chaos would have targeted high ranking generals and such probably, so the heresy would probably still have happened. But the emporer would just mind ass rape any human traitor instantly

Even with his pursuit of perfection and promoting of dweebs like Eidelon or sociopaths like Fabioud, it's offset by the likes of Saul Tarvitz and Rylanor also being singled out by Fulgrm for greatness. Given how competent the 3rd Legion was before getting trucked by Slaanesh, I'd argue Fulgrim, the real Fulgrim, not the Daemon possessed twisted one, was far more of a benefit than detriment

I don't know; some of the lore I have seen implies that the Emperor was in a hurry to win BECAUSE He knew that (some of) the Primarchs were ticking time bombs. If He hadn't been worried when some of them would betray Him, knowing some would, He might've been able to drag the process out more. I still don't TOTALLY get the need for the Primarchs; some of them, like Magnus, because he had an additional purpose, but most? If you had to be able to send elements of specific Legions to specific places, at specific times, to get desired results, even a Primarch can't be in two places at one time. I don't feel that every Legion then was the Minotaurs now, always mobilizing as one force, at full strength, and then only some needed, or could benefit, from Daddy's immediate presence.
As for the Lost Legions, maybe they are fine without their Primarchs? It depends on what you believe. So, we're they wiped out to the man, or did a bunch of them get fed into the Ultramarines? If they got seconded to Guilliman, they seemed to function fine. I don't recall the Ultramarines having spats of problems, or genetic degradation, and even the deaths of their Primarchs didn't seem to affect them; no rebellions, or Black Rage-like symptoms. Possibly whatever was wrong with II and XI didn't really pass on to their sons. And sure, I doubt they STILL rank among the Ultramarines; 10,000 years means none of them are still around, and their gene-seed wasn't continued to be used, as Guilliman never needed to shore up his own supply, but Cawl made it sound like they are stable, if he wanted. Personally, I'd say they were fine without their progenitors, apart from being absolutely unknown. 😊

This is a fun thought. If the Primarchs had been outright destroyed, instead of scattered...
The Uncrowned Princes probably would have died out through their hubris and the Rangdan Xenocides.
The Emperor's Children would have gone extinct.
The IV Legion would have got on with the Death Korps of Krieg like a house on fire.
The Star Hunters would likely have remained a fragmented scouting force.
The VI Legion probably would have gone extinct due to unstable gene-seed.
The VII Legion probably wouldn't have changed much.
The VIII Legion... I don't know, but it probably would have been an improvement.
The Revenant Legion would have remained the feared, savage loyalists ideal for hunting and exterminating xenos far from the Imperium's borders.
The X Legion... I don't know enough about them to say.
The War Hounds would have been a great mirror to the IX.
The War-Born were doing quite well without Guilliman, and would have carried on just fine.
The Dusk Raiders would have carried on without much problem.
The XV Legion would probably have gone extinct from the Flesh-Change.
The Luna Wolves would have just carried on as the premiere strike unit of the Great Crusade.
The Iconoclasts would have continued kicking ass and destroying the gods.
The Dragon Warriors would have likely gone extinct due to stubborn pride.
The Dust-Clad would have been the feared overseers used to maintain compliance.
The XX Legion would have continued carrying on like the 1950s-era CIA on steroids.
Add that to the fact that there can't be a Horus Heresy without Horus, and I'm starting to think that the universe would have imploded due to a shortage of grimdark. And also that during the crusade when the Emperor was looking for his sons, he should have been killing them as he found them in most cases.

The galaxy probably would of been better of if the primearch were not found/created. Chaos getting several primarchs and a defeated emperor is worse for the galaxy than having a smaller empire with the emperor and a few more xeno civilizations.

A lore video on the Sanctus Reach saga (Grukk face rippa and all that) would be very cool

Considering that the legion’s geneseed comes from their primarchs… Yes.
