      Amusingly the Wolves have Huscarls (veteran sergeants), Thegns (Varagyr terminator sergeants) and Jarls

    • @TheStormfury
      @TheStormfury Год назад +119

      Huscarls are very much something most descended from germanic tribes had in one form or another, the earliest version of professional soldiers and knights for those regions. Translates to house guard or soldier, they very much are not vikings (even they those of the nordic variety could raid to accompany their lord, the closest thing to a huscarl viking would be the Jomsvikings). Angolo-Saxons who arguably fought the Vikings the most, if not a close contender, also had huscarls due to their similar Germanic heritage, and the Angolo-Saxons primarily defeated the vikings invaders with the use of fortifications, specifically fortifying towns in a specific way known a burgh (many locations names are still influenced by this). A walled settlement with means of food production, however minor, to make sieging and assulting even a town a major challenge for the primarily quick raiding vikings. The creation of use of such fortified towns eventually forced the vikings into actual battle, with the angolo-saxons having mixed success until eventually winning/losing to the norman invaders.
      Point of all that? The Angolo-Saxon huscarls have more in common with their Imperial fist equivalents than that of vikings/space wolves. That being said i would have like the Space wolves to have had that name to be a lit less wolfy... Love the chapter but agree with majorkill, they just slap Wolf in front of pretty much everything to name it.

    Magnus proved his overwhelming nerdiness when he finalized the formal name of his Scarab Occult, the Sekhmet. In Egyptian Mythology, Sekhmet was a Warrior Goddess who was sent to Earth by Ra to punish mortals for conspiring against him... and killed _so many_ of us that we almost went extinct, and _would_ have if Ra hadn't felt pity for us and recalled her, slaking her thirst for blood by dying a strong beer red with ochre so that it resembled blood.
    Kinda fitting when you realize that in the Sekhmet you'd need to be a mid-Beta-grade Psyker or _higher_ to be successful. I wonder if Big E taught Magnus the stories of this Mythology during the years He spent in psychic communication with Magnus before their first physical meeting... y'know, talking about the good ol' days when _He_ was a relatively young man still; I mean, The Emperor would _still_ be about four-thousand years old when Egypt really rose to prominence, but that's neither here nor there.

    The Shadow Wardens were stealthy, as all elite Raven Guard are, but they weren't the stealthiest Astartes in the Legion. That title goes to the Mor Deythan. They had a more basic, downgraded version of Corax's invisibility power they inherited through their gene seed, allowing them to 'shadow walk'. This ability was very rare, so they were/are scarce in number, meaning it's members were all experienced veterans, with new additions being almost unheard of. They were/are the last word in Astartes stealth and infiltration tactics with unique war gear designed to make as little noise as possible, along with stuff like snipers, shotguns and volkite weapons. IIRC they were also kept secret from most of the legion, bar its leaders, to aid in the effectiveness of their infiltration tactics. They also have a stealthy battle cant that sounds like wind.
    I'd love to see a video on these guys, or just a passing mention, but alas, there isn't a great deal of lore about them due to the Raven Guard getting shafted by the writers. A shame imo, as they are my favourite legion.

    "The Deathwing Companions are formed of the finest warriors and longest-serving veterans in the Deathwing, each sworn by stringent oaths to ensure the survival of the officers placed into their charge. Most famous among their ranks are those that have taken a death-blow meant for their charge and survived - such warriors are granted the right to wear bone-white armour in recognition of their selfless devotion."
