  • The initial checkout of a Carrier 18,000 BTU (1.5 Ton) wall air conditioner model XCB183D. The unit is dated 10/1995, making it likely to have been sold during the summer of 1996. It has an EER rating of 9.6, which is excellent for something of this form factor, even by today's standards. It is a 220v single phase machine, rated at only 8.3 amps / 1,870 watts. The actual power consumption under normal operating conditions is likely considerably lower. R-22 refrigerant with a Carrier Daewoo rotary compressor.
The fan motor is branded Mebsa, which I am not familiar with. It is ball bearing and appears to be of good quality build. It is model MK46QAAX1. 3 speed, with RPM ratings of 1,100 on high, 900 on medium, and 750 on low. The condenser fans on these units are absolutely outrageous! Both the condenser and evaporator fans are very well designed, being quiet and having quite a good range in speed despite only a few hundred RPM difference between the settings.
I obtained this unit for the asking price of $25. This was such a good deal I didn't even bother trying to get it lower. The lady that sold it to me said she removed it from her house recently as she has central air conditioning installed and no longer needed it. I believe it was in service from 1996 up until last year. I stated in the video that I would include a picture of it in it's original install location, but of course I forgot. I will try to include it in a future video.
The lady also had a second Carrier air conditioner that I saw installed in the house, through a wall that leads into the garage. Since it's never seen the elements, it's probably in excellent condition. She said it too is no longer used and will be removed at a future time. I left my contact information with her and asked her to let me know when it gets removed as I'm interested in buying it as well. She seemed like a very reasonable person, I wouldn't be surprised if she does end up calling back.
This machine is in overall excellent condition, especially considering it's nearing 30 years old. there is very little rust anywhere, and both coils are in near perfect condition. The unit does have what appears to be a factory drain hole, which probably does allow some slinging of water but doesn't allow a lot of water to sit in the pan after turned off, which is what really does the damage. This machine is an excellent example of the importance of a drain hole. The chassis has an interesting drain hose attachment apparatus on it, which looks like a factory original piece to me.
The unit's performance is still good as new. It provided an approximately 30 degree split during testing in a 77 degree environment, which is very high performance. The compressor is quiet. The fan is very quiet on low, and moves an insane amount of air on high.
I'm very glad I found one of these. Several years back, I showed a video of a slightly larger capacity model at a relative's house ( • Carrier YCB213D 21,000... ). Unfortunately I was not able to acquire any of the air conditioners at that house due to various circumstances. Once I really started collecting air conditioners, I wanted to find another one like it, and this is a great instance.

Those Daewoo compressors are in my opinion some of the best rotaries. They sound good and they last a long time.

I would put a Japanese made one from Toshiba, Matsushita, or Sanyo above these, but they're definitely close behind.

Nice checkout of this 18,000 BTU carrier air conditioner Jordan. Looks in fantastic shape. Shame you don't have that 220 circuit installed yet in the kitchen. It would be great to have this unit installed in there at some point would also be cool to have a Carrier air conditioner set up for the house. Very nice find and hopefully at some point, you can get your hands on that other Carrier unit that may be available here soon. These units are certainly built to last many years and it's worth every cent to keep these units running for decades to come. Hope to see this installed soon bro.

I would put that unit in your kitchen or living room, which ever room is more central in the house, and it would probably cool the entire house. Especially if you close off the door going to your sun room.

It would be interesting to see how this handles in the living room. This is rated for about 10K less than the International Series I have in there now. The International blows much colder, but this seems to push more air. I wonder if it would be a wash. The original portion of the house (kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms) can be satisfactorily cooled with a 10K machine. This would be total overkill for the kitchen, but I do like to make it real cool while cooking.

Hey can you give me some tips on my 2000s feeders 5000 btu unit. It dosnt like to start the fan we have put oil in it but we have to spin it by hand for the fan to start up. We had 2 of those units with the same problem do you think you know what’s wrong

I really don't think the water in the pan and the slinger wheel make too much of a difference like people claim (in fact I have proven it to not really make that much of a difference before,) But if it somehow does, they should make a drain plug that opens when the unit is off and closes when it is on. All it would take is a "mushroom" shaped rubber plug in some sort of a housing with a spring, and it either would be actuated in some way by a pressure switch of some sort for the refrigerant line, or a temperature sensor in the condenser coil. That way when it is running, water builds up and when it is off, the water runs out.

When I have some extra money, perhaps at the end of the year when the ACs go on sale, I'm going to buy 2 identical models. I will add service ports to both. One will get a drain hole, one will be untouched. I will set them up in different conditions and compare pressures, temperature, and power draw. Then they will both be set up to run the same number of hours side by side, and we'll see what type of rust and dirt accumulates. Hopefully then, with powerful, documented evidence, we can put the drain hole debacle to rest.
I'd think it would not be hard at all to design some type of air flow operated valve to drain out the water after operation.

@@JordanU I did a (short term, like 2 hour) test a while back measuring the current draw of two identical 5k BTU WCI Frigidaire units from the 90s. One with and one without a drain hole. It was slightly lower at first (I filled the pan manually to start,) but it evened out to be within what could be considered a margin of error.
Seeing a long term side by side on two new units will be neat to see.
