I'm preparing DIY washing liquid using liquid potassium soap and baking soda and trying to thicken it with guar gum. Gum is nicely dispresed in the concoction since I prepare a paste with glycerin before mixing it with water. Unfortunately the mixture keeps separating. It takes about one to two days and sediment appears on the bottom and clear liquid above it... Do you have any idea why does it happen?

Are you talking about cellulose derivatives like hydroxyethylcellulose; or microcrystalline cellulose? HEC (and other cellulose derivatives) disperse easily, can give a clear gel and some suspension, but aren't natural. MCC works but there are others that I prefer to use (but is natural). Depends how easily you can source it and price - try some out and see how you like it compared to the ones I show on this video! Happy formulating :)

@@makaylaadzra4197 No, it won't work! It is going to be simply suspended in the gloss, meaning you'll have the product with particles (maybe clumps) in it. Xanthan gum is hydrophilic, meaning loves only water. It absorbs water and gets hydra(water)ted.

      Hi Mohan,
Thanks for watching and reaching out. Be sure you subscribe to never miss the latest videos.
      To answer your question:
Disperse your gum in glycerin and add with minimum mixing necessary, then allow the product to settle over a few days. Limit the introduction of air while mixing by keeping your mixers well below the surface of the product to reduce introducing a vortex (sucking air in). It will still suck some air in but try to limit this - and then allow a couple of days while covered for all air to come out of the batch.

@@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 thanks a lot mam for your response. The gum slurry should be added after, adding surfactants to the water phase ??. I am not supposed to add the gum slurry before surfactants to the water ...right ? Mam

Could you write their names down in the comment, please? I have a hard time identifying some of them, despite you having one of the most lovely accents I have heard in a long time. I very much enjoy your work AND the topping of it with that accent! Thank you in advance!

Is viscosity the sole reason the gums can stabilize the formulas?

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401

No - I just used a lot of gums in this video to show the different strength of gelling. You would normally adjust the gum input to suit your formulating needs. Some gums, even if they create a lot of viscosity, aren't the best at stabilising particles... hmmm I may need to do a separate video on that! Gums help stabilise your formulas but emulsifiers have far greater stabilising ability for emulsions.
