- If you’ve looked at a lot of ingredient labels on food, you’ve probably noticed that xanthan gum pops up a lot. In fact, it pops up in a lot of non-food products as well, like shampoo, but what exactly is xanthan, besides a great Scrabble word? While it is a food additive, you don’t have to worry too much about xanthan gum, because it is nothing more than a thickening agent. It doesn’t really have a taste on its own, but it simply holds things together. Let’s take a look at what xanthan gum is and why it’s in everything.

Xanthan Gum was used on oil rigs to thicken the sludge used to transport oil and water.
It binds to the intestines and reduces absorption of nutrients.
Thank You soooo much for this info, they could always include this when they are talking about Xanthan gum.
proof ?
@@yggdrasild755 Go look it up, this isn't a college class.
Its a poop of pathogenic bacteria, the same bacteria that causes black spots on your broccoli and cauliflower.
So if you won't cook blackened broccoli or cauliflower for your family and friends why would you use a thickener made from it???
America has lost its soul to greed!
Feeding to its people chemicals that are banned in 160 countries. 💔💔💔
>makes unsubstantiated claim
>gets asked to back it up with evidence
> "just Google it bro"
Pathetic. BTW, oil rig fluid also includes water, is that bad too?
Well this was unexpectedly interesting. 🤔
I recently started to use X-gum in my homemade hot sauces without knowing much about it 😅 so thanks for the infos I feel like I can keep up peacefully ^^
I came here because I noticed it in my hot sauce. I'm glad to know it's mostly benign.
Same! Good old hot sauce, bringing people together over the wonders of xanthan gum..
Thanks for the information. I was just watching a video about using xanthan gum to thicken kefir into a pudding and got curious what it actually was. You answered that very well. Keep up the good work!
Why not use other thickening agents? Like the one that is used in jello
all of the gum additives give a monotonous and overly uniform texture to foods apart from causing digestive problems in some people. What ever did humanity do before Xanthan Gum came along? I think we did just fine but here it is now and it's not going away. I avoid foods with added gums whenever possible, but it's really hard since it's in so many products.
Thought it said Xanax gum at first....
Me Too 😂😂😂😂
I was like “these junkies are getting sophisticated” lmao
😂😂😂
How cool would that be lol ☺️☺️
It sounds nothing like it
I use it when I make my own dressings for salads. It makes the dressings stick better om the salad. :)
Curiousity made me come here
I first heard about this from one of the chef on the food channel. I can't remember the chefs name
But I can see his face in my head (where else) but I think he's still on the channel. I don't have any TV in my house anymore.
Thank you for teaching us about Xanthan Gum. I plan to use it as a thickener. I was not aware of what it was used for. I've seen it in products but didn't know, but I know now.
Xanax gum be wavy bro
Now I can use the insult, "yo mama so stupid she tried to chew xanthan gum."
In all seriousness why of other countries banned it is my question
A lot of people have odd reactions too it..Here in the U.S. money talks.
Which country? Liddle "Einstein"? FACTS!!
But why's xanthan gum _called_ xanthan gum? 🤔😂😂😂
Xanthan gum derives its name from the species of bacteria used, Xanthomonas campestris.
@@magicspell0 - Thanks! "Named after the already, crazy named, bacteria" 😂😂😂
@@Digitalhunny xantho-monas from greek "yellow entity"
@@Kyokahnn I like it.
I’m making my own hot sauce and I see everyone has that ingredient on it
Xanthan sure is a weird flavor for gum
They could use corn starch or other thickening agents. They don't need to use xanthan gum in European food products so why do they use it in the U.S.?
Because cornstarch isn't as effective and has different properties depending on the application.
Also the EU does approve the use of xanthan gum in food, it just might be the case it's not commonly used.
This comment is so old probably doesn’t make sense replying but I will for others who may see. Cornstarch requires heat to activate and Xantham gum can be used cold and xg have far more use cases than cornstarch does not
YES ITS IN EVERYTHING AND TOXIC TO DOGS.
Sriracha brought this additive to my attention
Allene Rosalind Jeanes was _part_ of the team that developed xanthan gum. She is usually remembered for her role in developing dextran.
Do you have a source that says otherwise, because the sources I've found said her work on dextran lead to her discovering the process of making xanthan gum.
Stop putting it into everything. A "freshly cut" (how they call it) horseradish in a jar is so thick I can make a snowman from it. Ice creams with it feel so unnatural, I had to throw them away. Even yogurt-mayonaise-based herring salad has guar gum nowadays and tastes terribly. I don't get why nowadays everything must be "stabilised". :/
Great video that's very informative!
What an absolutely cool video! I didn't know Xanthan Gum was actually good for you, like Mashed says in this video!
Now that I know it's good for me, I'm going to add extra Xanthan Gum than what is already in my food! I'm also going to buy some of this and just eat it after microwaving it and adding milk because maybe that's a healthy breakfast seen as though it's good for me!
Thanks again Mashed, for releasing this video and really improving my health! You guys rule!
Xanthan makes me get sick in an unpleasant way so thanks for ruining everything McDonald's hot mustard, pickle relish, most ice cream, all cake, Thomas English muffins raisin, ritas custard they dont admit it but im pretty sure its in there, every salad dressing, most dips and or dip mixes, hidden valley spicepack yup, the breakfast eggs at burgerking, basically every fastfood joint menu has it hidden in some of the products, mcain baby cakes, the list goes on forever and is expanding, o gee my tumie hurts wonder what i ate that had xanthan in it almost every week now i get poisoned by this crap and have to throw out some rando food item because they started adding xanthan
Some food additives are sometimes listed under different names, I’d recommend checking for other xanthan gum names and seeing if it’s on the ingredients list of foods you can’t eat. Otherwise I’d suggest it might be something else that’s causing the problem. You should speak your doctor about this but potentially if you went on a diet that caused you no problem, and then introduced some of the gum into your own cake mix or something, you could be absolutely sure that that’s what’s causing the issue
@@Bron32 Well... I would suggest he talks to a therapist since it seems parents did a pathetic job raising an individual who THRIVES OF BULL KAKA TO SEEK ATTENTION! Just sayin!
I'm sure you think "CHEETOS" is a vegetable... don't you?
I totally agree with everything you say! I’m a coeliac who has a much worse reaction from eating food with Xanthan gum in it than if I accidentally eat gluten. It is a very painful reaction, most unpleasant. I wish Xanthan gum was banned from food products. It is not natural and should remain as a drilling rig lubricant. Anyone who doesn’t agree obviously has never had a reaction to it.
Punctuation.
Would this make blood sugars go up of your diabetic?
i came here since i saw xanthan gum. on a mcdonalds tangy bbq sauce thing.
I am so sensitive to this. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. No thank you!
YOUR NOT GOING TO SKIP PASS THAT , LIKE YOU DIDN'T SAY TOILET BOWL CLEANER??!!!
Now do one on guar gum!
Good for type2 diabetics.
No. If it wasn't there UPF manufacturers would have to use more expensive emulsifiers - such as egg whites.
Dude, this could be a solution to us binge eaters, cuz you can make huge amounts of food with barely any calories in there with xhantan gum
Ye, just don't eat it every day cuz I'm on day 2 vomiting + diarrhea, cuz I was making things with it for 2 weeks straight :D

Stuff sends me straight to the John . Causes bags under my eyes , face and hands to turn red. All of the gums do..I don't buy anything with the stuff in it.

Interesting..
She said that so smooth no hesitation at all. If I said it’s not often that black people get recognized for they’re inventions or 400 years of unpaid labor that’s controversial.

Where did bdogs comment go
Xantham gum isn't healthy lol. It's an industrial food additive that is used as a cheap alternative to real foods like egg yolks and animal fats. It's also used as mud-thickener at drilling sites.
@@eargh Xanthan gum is perfectly safe for consumption and has been extensively reviewed by global regulatory bodies like the FDA, EFSA, and WHO. The claim that it’s a “cheap industrial additive” is misleading-yes, it’s used in industries like oil drilling, but that doesn’t mean it’s harmful in food. It’s commonly used in gluten-free and vegan products to improve texture, not to replace real ingredients like egg yolks. It’s widely allowed in organic food and tested for safety. The tiny amounts used in food won’t harm you. The only real risk comes from consuming huge amounts, which would cause mild digestive discomfort, just like any other fiber. But don’t worry, it’s not the boogeyman some people make it out to be. Hell cornstarch has also been used in various industrial applications, including in the manufacture of adhesives, textiles, and as a thickener in products, doesn’t mean it is unhealthy.

Is it gmo or not
it depends on the source sugars that is used in the fermentation process to create xanthan gum. Does it matter? No.
@@niko1evenit does matter. GMO is poison
🤣it's a bad choice! If it still contain xantan,! A sticky additive with laxative effect!🤣🤣But it has pros & cons, as it lowers cholesterol and reduces glucose spike!🤣🤔
