I run a JL Aduio XD 600 / W6 setup in one vehicle and love it. Decided to go a little cheaper on another vehicle and went with the Alpine S-A60M / S-W10D4 setup and I was honestly blown away by how well it performed. It performed so well that I purchased the same Alpine setup for someone else and they couldn't believe the results either. Alpine makes very good products that are budget friendly.

Big D, I found the comments you made about what the average consumer wants at the beginning of the video to be very interesting. I'm 64 years old. I purchased my first car in 1978 for $500 and spent $500 on the audio system, which I installed myself. 2 6X9 coax in the rear parcel shelf, 5 1/4 coax in the doors, and a 10-inch woofer in a box I made myself from wood I scavenged from a construction site in the trunk. A Pioneer in-dash AM/FM Cassette and an Audiovox (I think) 'power amp' EQ under the dash. When I cranked the volume, there was more hiss than the snake house at the local zoo. Distortion? Maybe 20%, if not more. Now I drive a small SUV with an upgraded factory audio package. It sounds better than the audio system in my living room, most likely because the car components were carefully engineered to the car's body, turning it into a giant speaker box. Size and cost do matter, but skillful engineering matters more, no upgrades from me needed, much to my wife's relief. 😄

As an Alpine fan/user since the late 80’s I can attest to them never skimping on quality components or build quality. Back in the day if you wanted Alpine on a budget you could shop the few dealers who carried them for customer returns. Back then Alpine did not automatically credit retailers for returns so their stuff would actually go to the Alpine service center in SoCal for testing if a customer brought it back. The benefit to the customer was that these items would come back with a bench test report, which meant their amplifiers came with an actual hand written “rebirth sheet”. These reports revealed that their amps at the time were consistently underrated by around 20%.

Man I built a 90s alpine based sound system for my 89 Mercedes’ 560, ran a alpine 3da headunit with a 12 disk changer (and 3 disk cartridge in the HU) running through a 3343 graphic equalizer and then to a alpine v12 5 channel amplifier and a Sony 2 channel, ran 4 sets of blaupunkt 3 way component speakers and a Rockford fosgate punch subwoofer. The Sony amp drove a set of beefy Clearwater headrest speakers with independent volume control. It was clean and Loud with minimal distortion and man the clarity was insane

@@12pagani In the early 90’s I built a system in my ‘69 Ford Thunderbird using all Alpine except for the speakers. I don’t remember the model numbers but it had one of the better CD head units, a dual zone equalizer, and an active crossover for the subs. I had a 60 watt 2 channel driving a set of Polk Audio 6.5” separates and a bridged 100 watt 2 channel driving 4 Redline 8” subs. Only the head unit and equalizer were bought for the Tbird because nothing Alpine I ever bought ever broke. I regret selling all that stuff when I sold that car.

I’ve been running an Alpine PDX1.600 for some years now, and it’s been great, other than the power terminal stripping out. That amp was a huge deal for me when I was younger and got it used in a trade because I know it sold originally for right around $1 per watt. The 600w regardless of having a 2 or 4 Ω load is very interesting as well. It still cranks out the power in my car to this day. Always been an Alpine fan.
Also, back when subs weren’t requiring a thousand watts just to move, this 600w was a beast. It’s been hooked up to a pair of JL 12W6v2 (600w rms each) and pushes them greatly. Not a competition build by any means but I have it turned down a couple notches even at that.

People think I have 2 12s or that I have a 1500+ watt amp but I show them everything and they are extremely surprised to see that little amp making my subwoofer hit that hard. I got buddy’s who have skar audio 12s with a 2000 watt amp and there setup cannot compete with mine. Efficiency and clean power is all you need for your setup to hit hard!!!!

Glad you finally got to test this one. It quickly became one of my favorite amps and I ended up owning 4 of them, but no one had done any testing on it. It's basically the upgraded version of the MRV-M500 and if they had called this something that included "M600" it probably would've been even more popular, the name they chose doesn't let the average person know that it is a 600w amp.
By the way, have you considered testing any headunit "power pack" type amplifier. I'm tempted in buying an Alpine KTP-445 since something that tiny and simple to install is rated at 45wx4, but the 15A fuse makes me skeptical.

Measure Wattage Post CrossOver. I would love to see a comparison of gross wattage input versus net wattage per driver driven after the crossover, preferably in a 3-way. Or maybe at 1 watt in, as a standard. I would think the difference would indicate a crossover efficiency, if there is such a thing.
There's countless debate and plenty of guesses in the audiophile forums, but no one has the capability to test like Williston Audio. Thumbs up for a special request?

I see a lot of A60M’s out there and the majority say made it China, however mine happens to be a Korean model. Wondering if there is any difference in the two manufacturers and any components that might be Different as well. I would be incredibly interested in a test of the Korean Model A60M , next to the Chinese model and compare the two. Inside and to the Dyno test

I love Alpine amps. I'm using the MRP-M450 from 2006. I've never had an issue with it and I bought it used. It's only 400W at 2 ohms but it sounds amazing paired with 2 12" kickers. It has enough power to shake everything in the car and the pictures on peoples walls as I drive by. I also prefer the way it sounds over the pioneer 600W amp I have. Would love to try the S-A60M but I can't justify the $400 CAD just for a couple hundred extra watts of power. Also if possible, I would love to see the Alpine KTA-30MW Tough Power Pack tested. I think it would be the perfect thing for most people if they could sell it at a cheaper price.

I like how you explain things like the protect coming on and then off giving a bad read, but I still haven't heard you explain what's happening when a channel doesn't go up clean and jumps from 300-800 watts. I don't know why that's bad, like what's happening to the music during those jumps? Are they distorting? Clipping? What does it all mean

I have two SA60Ms and I'm gonna pair it with a Type R 12 in a ported box for my wife's car. The Type S is really good but I feel that tiny amp would do better with a Type R since my Type S is clipping at half gain. It'll do fine for me put in a sealed box for rock music. That SA60M really is a sleeper and it generates almost no heat.

    Hi.
Really appreciate all the great videos Bid D!
Friend runs an Alpine R-A75M @ 0.5 ohm small sealed box in his ute (Two 10" type R dual 2 ohm all coils in parallel) We wired it @ 2 ohm initially but thought to try 0.5 ohm thinking it probably won't like it.
Pushed very hard daily for about a year now, no issues sounds great and definitely much more output.
His pioneer 8601 mono amp would pulse in and out of protect trying to drive the same 0.5 ohm wired sub at high output.
    Please test it!

I run that deck it's very nice, miles ahead of the old stuff we used to run. Only thing I don't like is the sub-out control you can't disable the crossover so an Epicenter is out, and it also acts as a bass boost above the middle point on the potentometer, which of course leads to clipity clip pretty easily. I just used one of the full rande outputs. Other than that, very nice.

Alpine used to rate their amps wattages at 0.08% THD for 4Ohms a channel, and 0.3% for 2Ohms a channel or 4 Ohms bridged. It’d be interesting to see you test more of the old MRV T and M series (brushed aluminium ones) because at 1% THD, they’ll be way over alpines ratings.

Back in the day my system was a Sony receiver, Sony XEC 500 crossover, Boston Acoustics 6.5 Pro Series door speakers, 2 10 in. MTX Road Thunder Pro Series subs. For the amps I swear it was the Gold Series Naka 45 watts by 2 and MTX Road Thunder 100 watts x 2. It was installed in a brand-new 1990 F 150 regular cab 4x4. i went with the cxa 800.1 and for some reason my dual dvc 4ohm subs wired to 2ohm arent pushing mids.... its basically just dropping out. When wired to 1ohm, the amp cuts out at high volume so i wired to 2ohm and that solved that problem, but i still cant achieve any mids coming out of my subs (my rockford fosgate amp was able to send mids thru those same speakers). do you think its an amp issue, or tuning issue? should i get this amp instead?
