I just had this done yesterday. And for me, I wasn't able to lay as still as she is..thought it was very uncomfortable, like it's not an intolerable pain. When he would do the shock instrument, it starts at low and then it goes higher making your arm move ( raise)w/ uncomfortable feeling. they did that in four different spots on my lower arm. It was for carpal tunnel. And then the needle part didn't hurt being inserted. It just felt really uncomfortable, a little pain when they ask you to move your muscle while the needles in there.

Wasn't bad at all. The shocks just feel like rubber bands being snapped on your skin but you get used to it pretty fast. The needles are uncomfortable but just breathe when they go in and it's very tolerable. I wouldn't have a problem doing it again if I had to. I've had dry needling done before which was a lot worse.

I had one on my legs and was told that it would be minor pain and no after effects. LIARS!!! It was HORRIBLY painful during the procedure and I have lingering pain and nerve fluttering (they said the test was normal, so this is not the response of neural disfunction). Had they been honest with me about the potential pain and after effects, I NEVER would have gone thru with it!!!

I had one scheduled this morning for my right leg. It keeps having bad electric shocks. My PT said this test is NOT for random nasty electric shocks. It is for loss of sensation, loss of muscle strength, tingling or constant pain. I wrote the neurologist about that last week and was told they don’t care about symptoms. They just do tests there. Very curt.
I went in this morning terrified of them adding electricity to a leg that already suffers awful electrical shocks.
The nurse came out and told me they won’t be doing me because the receptionist said I was have anxiety about the procedure. I told her I do because my issue is nasty shocks that make me scream out when they hit as if I had run into a Hotwire fence and I can’t imagine ADDING shocks to that nerve area. She told me they won’t do the test because I have to be calm. It won’t work unless I am.
She said they will tell the ordering doctor that “it was intolerable” for me.
Reading your post, erased all the doubts that plagued me all day. Thank you for sharing.

Had this done this week. It was tolerable but I had way more shocks on each point. Felt like 2 or 3 test shocks then she said ok now 8 in a row and each got more uncomfortable. The needle moving around is something I've always disliked so that was extra sucky. The Thumb palm point was the most uncomfortably painful and to move against him with it in my palm was probably the worst. Then knowing u had to do the same on the other side not fun. It's not the worst thing, its tolerable but definitely was ready to get out of there. So I'd say between both arms they shocked 15 different points with 5-12 shocks total at each point. The needle was 4 different points on each arm. I'd rather do the no needle set though because it seemed to hit the nerve directly with the needle. You all can do it tho

This guy is hands down the most rude and unprofessional person. My daughter had an appointment with him for assessment of a hand injury. He spent his time fluffing his own feathers and degrading not only my daughter but other healthcare professionals as well. I have worked in this industry as a medical professional for many years and have NEVER and I repeat NEVER have seen anyone write a medical note so unprofessionally. When you start an appointment asking your patient what the doctors at Man’s Greatest Hospital (better known as world reknown MGH or Massachusetts General Hospital) had to say, you know this is a man with a chip on his shoulders. You tell me what so called doctor puts in a patients medical record how many EMG’s he has done, how he has seen dozens of posterior interosseous nerve syndrome and her symptoms look nothing like this at all. He then proceeded to tell her that she did not have Thoracic Outlook Syndrome (this was not an appointment disprove whether or not she had TOS). So, what he got out of my daughter was that the neurologist at MGH briefly mentioned MS but that he didn’t think she had this. He then immediately jumped on that bandwagon, didn’t think for himself and just immediately stated to her that she had an atypical presentation of MS. I would not recommend this guy to anyone. I’m actually disgusted and stunned at what he put in her medical record.

I have what they assume is cubital tunnel syndrome. The intermittent stabs of pain are fearful, like a hot electric needle up the side of my hand. When the doctor offered this type of test to me to investigate further, I assumed it would cause the same type of pain, the hot electric needle jabbing. The woman in this video could not be experiencing that kind of pain or she would be flinching at the very least, and probably jumping or crying out. So my question: does it really not hurt, and only cause discomfort? Would it be the same in my case? Thank you for this video. It gives me hope I could get through the procedures after all

Everyone experiences pain differently. I have had this done twice in my life. The 1st time, 11 yrs ago, an elderly doctor did it & I felt like I was being electrocuted & it was severely painful! He didn’t explain anything & told me to stop it (I was wincing in pain & making “ouch” sounds after every shock). Then had to get the same test again this week (testing for Carpal Tunnel in both hands & Ulnar Nerve damage in both).
But this time, I told Dr the only way I’ll take this test again is if he gives me a Valium because I had bad anxiety abt taking test! He approved & said it would not affect the test results. Took the pill 2 hours prior to test & it was a godsend!! Also, the Dr performing test was a sweetheart. Told her I had anxiety & she explained everything. She let me know when the shock was coming or needle was going in. To be honest, it wasn’t that bad this time at all!!! 😀
I really think the old Dr I had on 1st test was giving me too much & high of a shock before! Glad I had the test now, I have severe CT & Ulnar nerve issue in both arms/hands. Surgeries coming up soon & they give you a local now, don’t need general anesthesia which I’m happy about. I’ll be taking a Valium on surgery days too! @@dennismarshel7040I was all worked up for NOTHING!!! You'll be just fine. I promise.
      • The shocking part didn't hurt. It was just a weird feeling.
      • The shots were definitely tolerable. My thumb hurt the worst. So out of 12 shots only one hurt.
Good luck ♥️ Let me know how you did ✨🤍

Can the EMG test alone cause any potential harm or is there any risk in the test alone?

There is no known side effects from EMG testing if done properly. The worst I can happen is minor bruising from the needles.

And that’s definitely not it.. just had one of those test done about an hour ago … I was in there for 45 minutes, my evaluation of this procedure was it’s not very pleasant but it’s very tolerable, more annoying than anything… this test was for carpal tunnel syndrome

I had this today for pain from lumbar foraminal stenosis, it wasn’t so bad, the pain is minimal. The shocks felt like someone flicking hard against my skin. I grunted a bit when he was shocking my feet as they are sensitive and my foot involuntarily reacted, but it wasn’t terrible, i experienced shocking at the chiropractor and it wasn’t different, just in different places. The needles weren’t so bad. It did cause a little bruising in some places and some muscular soreness, but nothing terrible

I had this done twice on my legs and feet. First time it was painful, but tolerable.
Second time it was beyond horrible, for the needle part. Electro chocks part was OK.
Seeing that needle stuck all the way in my muscles with doctor asking me to press against it was like being tortured during Medieval times. My legs and feet are bruised and hurting.
