I did something like this last year for my mother's birthday gift, except instead of changing resins I was adding more resins of different colours to blend them. I had to keep the amount of resin in the vat low so I could control the colour, I started with a clear, then added green transparent, and as the print went I would add transparent blue. I was adding small amounts of resin every 20 minutes to keep the transition consistent.
THats it right there! My wife was like, why do you keep running down to your workshop every 15 mins? haha
Came out awesome 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Mr Unnecessary himself with that awesome idea. Was really fun to experiment with man!
One thing I would highly recommend is warming up the resin! I've played around with Nova3D resins and the Monocure CMYK dyes to do transparent coloured parts and used a similar technique to make a rainbow-coloured rook - and warming up the resin you're going to switch in definitely seems to help with ensuring that it holds together on each colour change
Thanks for the tip. I’m actually looking into a future video around warming up your resins before printing / during printing and how it can improve things even when refillling the vat on longer prints
I'm so glad I came back to this video, I got this technique to work once and could not understand why the other attempts kept failing. My resin is cold because it's near the window and it's been raining when I've tried after the first successful attempts. I'm gonna heat up my resin and see if that works!
They came out looking awesome! I love these kind of experiment videos
Thanks man! Now we need some rainbow resin “lego” prints
@@UncleJessy can I use a translucent resin on the same print as a grey if I run low mid print?
Every video I watch from you , it convinces me that much more to get a resin 3d printer to complement my fdm one! Well done this looks fantastic! 👍
these came out amazing 🔥😎
I was thinking in the past to make a project with peristaltic pumps and multiple bottles, so it’s pouring the colors automatically, or better mod a printer and make like a huge revolver with vats 😅
🤯🤯 now that would be wild. Especially if you could somehow automate it to dispense at specific times
@@UncleJessy indeed 😁 know how to do it, don’t have the time 😅 it’s actually not that complicated, I probably have to hire an intern to tell him what to do.
..preparing to make soon videos with custom electronics for 3D Printing, exciting new features 😁
@@marsgizmo ohhh now that sounds like a fun project!
Cool idea, put some siphon hoses in the corners of the vat and pump out the current resin as well to make color change quicker
You know how many ask about adding glitter into resin every week. Man its like a week question. But it look even better then I thought it would.
Great detail in that print. Hope to see more.
Thanks for checking it out!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I've been contemplating how to go about changing color in between. My thought was while paused in between colors, do a quick rinse in IPA to get the last layer color residue off and not slightly altering the next color. But thank you for doing most of my research for me lol I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought about this
Ohhh that would be an interesting way of doing it as well but I’m wondering if the rinse off would have more negative effects
Getting a Mars 2 tomorrow. Love your videos. Can’t wait to try resin printing.
Pretty neat. Loved how you're experimenting, basically with resin hydrodipping.
Oh my gosh, I hecking love this channel!!!
😬😬😬🤘🤘 thanks mate! This was a really fun project to test out.
Thanks for the video Uncle Jessy. Very useful ideas.
Thanks for checking it out!
I have followed you and your amazing videos for a while now and I am always amazed at your hard work and vids to help the 3d printing community. As always great work 💪
Really appreciate the comment and your support and checking out the videos! They are a lot of fun to put together and should have a handful of videos lined up for this coming week :)
@@UncleJessy so looking forward to the new vids as always .. in my 4 years of 3printing and watching your vids always inspire me and give me new found idea's . Keep up the great work and look forward to your up coming work . Keep well 🙏
Your favorite option definitely reminds me of easter eggs when you die them. Now we need a massive egg lol.
Seems to be a need for active continuous agitation in the resin vat to get the particle mixes to print well. Could even be DIY with a magnetic stirrer on the side of the vat.
I recently started to print figurines, and being a total toddler at painting, I wanted to print them using different colors of resin. What I did was I divided the model into multiple parts and prepared a tight assembly, as well as resin inserts for the smaller details. But changing resin mid-print didn't even cross my mind! On some pieces, assuming everything works as expected, it would have saved me so much time to do just that. I'll definitely remember the idea and experiment a bit with it.
SUPER cool 👍👍
I'm gonna try this as soon as I get my LCD replaced. Thanks again Jeesy!!
It’s a real fun one to get some really different looking results!
This so cool. I just lack the trays and structure. I would have a mess in my print room. But fantastic idea
Haha my room was a mess after that project. You can still manage with one vat
Super cool!
Thanks mate!
That's awesome, Jessy! I need to dust off my resin printer and explore some of that! Thanks for sharing!
Ok that’s freaking sweet dude. Great model to use as well.
The model is so dang awesome to print with. I just printed her other variant of it as well ... EVIL
That is really cool idea. Definitely a bit of work. Would love to see if this process would be easier in the future.
LOL NICE. I was just researching that for key-caps. and its the first example you show
For the glitter it works a LOT better with transparent resins this way you don't just see the clumps on the surface but the glitter all the way through the print. The separation issue that happened is because the glitter settled in the bottom of the vat making a layer that cured more glitter than resin. To prevent this you want to stop the print every so often and stir/mix the glitter up off the vat again.
Awesome tip! Thanks. I will for sure be trying that out!
oh, a active continuous resin changing system sounds fun as hell
Just a little note about a recent experiment of my own. I was playing with trying to do a gradual marbling but using a white base then adding in some dyes of light blue in the center of my tank, some darker blue around it and a little back in the corners. I was trying for a stormy sky and it worked for the supports but by the time it got to the actual pieces, it was almost completely mixed. The end color was pretty nice for a stormy blue/grey but the marbling was pretty non-existent.
Yeah i assumed that would end up happening and was continually mixing a little in at a time for the rainbow unicorn. Eventually it will all just blend together in one shade of mess
Damnit man! Literally the same second you introduce glitter to resin my wife walked in the room. She's obsessed with Pair Eyewear and printing her own glasses "toppers". I had managed to avoid glitter in the house up to this point, and now here eyebrows are raised and she's on Amazon.
I can imagine when u start with a single color for example blue end refill it time to time with only yellow it could create a cool effect
try researching some color theory to see which colors mix well together and make which colors! so that the end results come out more vibrant, and not like that weird mouldy looking grey in the middle of the rainbow unicorn (which was caused by mixing red with green, colors on the opposite ends of the color wheel).
Haha Yeah I was thinking about that after I had finished printing it that I should have probably looking into the order of the colors a little more before i just willy nilly tossed them in there
Yeah just grab a color wheel and look at opposite sides, like yellow and purple.
Awasome💕😍👌👍
thanks uncle elegoo
😏 I see what you did there
Always testing out the something new. I get a lot of ideas for new projects from you’re videos Sir. And they always work out😁 All the pro tips that saves me a ton of time and frustration, thank you👌🏼 You should put on a «Approved by UJ» sticker✅ Thanks again, have a good one. Cheers
Thanks for checking them out. Heck, I get a TON of inspiration from a ton of y’all out there and wild stuff people are trying out
One thing I think resin printing is super well suited to is doing the inset piece of a molded part.
The printer can handle the complicated stuff that would be extremely difficult to mold properly. Then fit it into molds, douse it in resin, pressure pot, cure, clip off a couple positioning legs and golden.
I’ve been doing clea resin with alcohol inks and it’s fantastic
love this. For the glitter use clear resin then mix the glitter it come out better.
Will be testing that out this week!
What about beginning with as many colors as you want, poured into the vat at the same time, slowly, so they all meet without much mixing, if at all?
Then you will have whole sections in different colors and, with the up and down pumping of the build plate, you might get a blending into a dark shade, maybe even black, unless hollowed, then probably not. siphoning off each section might even permit recapturing pure colors for reuse.
Similarly, how about modifying some ice cube trays with holes on the bottom, pour as many colors as you want, with the tray on the FEP and then when you lift it off, you could have MANY colors.
If you 3D print a tray to perfectly fit with smaller sections, you could put a dozen or so colors at once.
What about a constant flow manifold and pump to keep a constant flow of changing colors? Like a multicolored river of resin?
One way to possibly get more of the glitter out of your vat is to use a water-pik. Use your own judgement on the settings, but I've found that warm water in my water-pik set to full blast does a magnificent job of cleaning my glasses. Gets the dead skin soaked with sweat and oils off of everything and out of all the nooks and crannies. It would probably do a great job of cleaning your vat. If you have an old water-pik, you may even want to try filling it with IPA or whatever you use to clean your prints and shoot that at it. Just think of the water-pik as a pressure washer.
idea : use thermochromatic paint ( who change color with temperature ) mixed with resin :)
Going to 100% look into that thanks for the tip!
3:17 They do have spare vats, just not that type anymore. Those type were disposable and you couldn't swap out the FEP. I got one and asked about it since I couldn't get mine apart without breaking it and they sent me a newer type, one of the clear plastic ones instead of that trash design with all the corners that make it hard to clean. The new ones are nice and they fit my GeeeTech DP200 perfectly.
Idea: Start a print with some resin color 1. Have a peristaltic pump (ish) add resin color 2 slowly until end of print. (Or just dripping slowly from a •thin• tube or so)
I would love to see the result 👍😊
This should be a standard slicing feature!!!
Oh man, I would never be brave enough to introduce my mono x to glitter haha
3:58 I don't know... The Sonic Mini came with clear red vats and we had cracking issues.
Ohhhh good point. I forgot about all of that drama. I wonder if its the same material
I use pearl powders for great effects in trans resins from automotive custom paint..
Going to be grabbing some of those this week to mess around with
I wonder about multicolored lithophanes, it seems it's possible to print one with multicolor FDM printer and they look amazing (when lit thru).
So I wonder given that with resin printer you can print even finer detail lithophane (of single color), could you for example combine few (or at least two) lithophanes stacked on top of each other?
Two I think should be easy, just make their back flat and they'll match perfectly.
Two colors lithophanes would look great, like a white-blue, white-green, white-red ... (most colors look nice next to white), but perhaps blue-yellow/orange, or red/yellow ...
And in theory if you stack 3 lithophanes each of single color (for example Red, Green & Blue) perhaps you can achieve a lot more colors? (sure two of the lithophanes would have slight air-gap, but from a distance it wouldn't be noticeable. The point is to look good when a light is shining behind it)
Do you know of such resin lithophanes?
It might be interesting to see what would happen if you added the alcahol inks directly to the vat instead of swapping colors. A couple drops of blue, not mixed or anything, then red, then yellow etc. Maybe get a swirl or marble effect?
Awesome the unicorn looks amazing any tips on getting this off the build plate?
I have the plastic vat that came with my Mars 2 non pro. I actually like the metal ones better. They have the notch for pouring, and the max resin fill line whereas the plastic dont
Nice videos. Just started looking into 3D printers a few weeks ago. I got this idea where I may be able to make money from them in 5 years but idk. I have no knowledge lol
For the failure, that looks a lot like the FEP failing to release. It's a bit weird, because the mouth/snout doesn't appear to have drainage, so you would expect that to go first, and the main body had quite a large hole. It's hard to really see from the video exactly what was going on though.
About the only other thing I can think of off hand is maybe the resin was having a hard time getting through the smaller hole to fill the main body, causing a pressure buildup that prevented the print sitting all the way down onto the FEP. ( I know the og Mars had a little bit of play, not sure about the new ones, though the Saturn doesn't seem to. )
Should try pouring the resin in ROY G BIV order to see if the transition is more rainbow like.
Also multi color pour of two or more resins on the side.
Resin pours can make cells if you toss a tiny bit of silicone oil, but idk if that affects the print.
Could you use this to make a print look like marble?
No link to unnecessary inventions video? that's exactly what I was looking for haha
What about just mixing the colors in the vat? Do you think they would all just blend together or could you potentially get a tie dye effect?
I imagine the glitter maybe making marks on the FEP since the build plate is pressing down hard on the FEP with glitter chunks in between. Any trouble there?
Not that I have noticed but I will double check to confirm. It was a lot of. “Fun” to cleanup
That depends on how abrasive the glitter is, most of them are plastic. There are resins that have ceramic particles in them that warn you about fep scratching
How can u have 2 charcoal filters on pro only ?
U.J. : what about glow powders and what if you use 2 transparent where you pour over the other maybe do a half half table with a hand made swirl (I am interested in resin printing and you are super knowledgeable and willing to experiment!)
Subscribing because your in my same city had no idea 😂💫✅
Finish the batman suit!
I promise… that will make a return 😬
What'd u buy xxl gloves?
How about using syringes with tubes to add and remove particular colors?
I think I need to get a turkey baster to do some massive suck up of resin and then something like a syringe for the addition of new colors around the vat
be interested to know what would happen if you put the concentrated dye in at the beginning and let the build plate mix it up as it prints. Could you get a more tie-dye look?
Might try this myself actually
nah it just mixes pretty fast and you get a fully mixed colour very quickly.
Hey, can you add color shift mika powder? Will it still print that way?
I believe it will based on a recent video from Tom Sanladerer
Are your Saturn settings the same as for the Mars 2 Pro seen in the video? I got my Saturn last week and started tinkering around. Thanks for the videos :)
More or less I print them very close to the same settings. I run my Mars at 240 lift speeds and 180 speeds on the saturn
@@UncleJessy Merci
I wonder if heating the resin would remove the need for additional exposure time?
It definitely helps! I printed a rainbow rook a while back and I made sure to heat the resin while it was waiting to swap in, worked like a charm
I’m going to be digging into that further for sure. Looking into methods of heating up my resins before I pour them in
@@UncleJessy what i do is i rolling boil some water in a pot, turn the heat off, and dip my sealed resin container into the hot water. After a while I shake it up to distribute the heat and feel how thick/thin it is and stick it in for another bath until i think it is warm enough all the way through.
You can feel the temperature pretty well through the regular resin bottles when shaking. Just make sure to give it a good shake from the top to get most of the boiling water off before grabbing the lower section.
I’m
Intrigued by this but I was wondering if you could do a two colour print but do the inner of the piece first then the outter (be badge for instance)
VW***
looks awesome
Perhpas next time instead of pouring the different coloured ressin in the a cup: get a pipeet or large syringe with out the needle on to really get in the center of the print: could get more defined colours instead of the washed out dark purple mix.
Happy Pride Nerds
Would it be possible to do 4 colors, add them all in at the same time from each corner, then print?
It's completely possible. but I would recommend only pouring in a little at a time that way you keep adding in more and it continually mixes in vs it just blending the full vat together as it prints
Hi Jessy, how much exposure time for Elegoo ABS like in 4K u set?
hey great content again :) Can you tell wehre i can find your chitu settings?
I have them all available in my patreon ;)
im curious why pausing failed. i pause prints all time an no need to change exposure time. I wonder if its because temperature resin difference from the one that has been going and the fresh one. I wonder if you can skip the exposure work around if you warmed the new resin vat.
Don't eat the unicorns!
Very interesting experiment and it would be very cool to try this with translucent colours and maybe using a smaller particle glitter (Mica powders like Pear-ex are your friends here). This was a lot of fun to watch and thank you for using my unicorn
At 6:45 you pulled a film off the build plate that made it really easy to remove the part. Where can I get this?
I was thinking. There is those rubber scrapes that also suck. Using one of those on a robot arm could suck up probobly 99.9% of the resin.
Then you could have like 10 resins with pump .and one way valves.
When they suck they do it from the scape, when they fill they do it into the vat
Did you just use normal food coloring?
it would be nice if someone could invent a resin that could change color based on the amount of heat applied or something
Can you mix two washable resins together to create a different colour?
Yes indeed! I do it all the time to create custom colors. In fact, yesterday, the wife wanted more roses. I printed up one, and while it was printing, she wanted to know if I had purple. I told her I needed to mix my blue and red together to make some. Since both bottles were close to empty, the timing was great. I use an empty, clear soda bottle to do my mixes to see what I have and what I need to add. Now a very nice lavender rose is printed too.
What would happen if u just mix the resins together
Haha I literally just bought some resin dyes to try making colored prints with. The shipment hasn't even arrived yet. I was about to buy alcohol but but then I thought "alcohol? In resin? That's doesn't sound right".
I hope the kind I got works. It says it's for UV resin.
Niiiice its a lot of fun to mess around with different resin pigment options. Certainly gives you a lot more variety to work with
Mica works great! Go to Hobby Lobby and get some Pearlex or other Mica. It will look amazing!
Going to for sure try mixing some of that in and playing wiht the results!
@@UncleJessy I just saw this video yesterday: ruclips.net/video/sTNjqwdoP3M/видео.html where Thomas Sanladerer uses different pigments (including mica powders) and they look pretty amazing. Love to see what you could do with them!

Rainbow unicorn horn? I need. I have a pride flag and a rainbow unicorn horn on the wall next to it would look amazing
🏳️🌈 was such a fun print and ever more fun to show some love and support for the prideful peeps out there!
@@UncleJessy awww thank you so much! I know rainbow doesnt necessarily mean pride but thats always what i think of haha
is there any such a thing as color shifting resin? I haven't been able to find much on the subject. Anyone heard of anything like that?
why did you print it flat on the bed like that? i thought you couldn't do that you needed to lift it on supports, i just got my anycubic photon today and this threw me for a loop
Most models you will want to rotate and support. She designed this one specifically to print flat/no supports/hollow with vents for resin printers 😬 no way I could pass that up
@@UncleJessy that is crazy cool, just bought a magnetic bed for my printer because of this vid, too bad wham bam isn't on Amazon, made me buy some knock off but oh well, thanks for the reply, love ur vids, u convinced me to get back into 3d printing after swearing never to because I got scammed by the guys at solid doodle 2 back in the day, hope I have a better experience this time around
Ohhh you are gonna love the magnetic beds. I need them on all of my machines at this point.
Like resin isn't expensive enough?
Well good news is you can use the same resin… just tint it multiple times 🙃
I’m pretty sure they are still black, I’ve ordered the red ones two times, both times I got black ones
I ordered them a few months ago and got red. If I remember correctly somewhere on the page they say it's a random assortment of colors, so I imagine it's just whatever they have in stock.
@@zedgathegreat9122 damn it!! I’m gonna have to order more till I get funky colours
I know it has probably been asked, but where can i get the raven skull stl? and its hollow supportless?
P.S. UJ your videos are really helpful and inspiring, i dont know how you find the time to make so many!
hello uncle Jessy, could you make a video about glitters and resin on Elegoo mars 4-ultra 9k / 3D printers please : ) ...Great content!!!
Glitters with transparent resin! Resin Siraya Tech Craft - Glow in the dark - Ultra Clear 😀😀😀
Maybe one day we will have resin that also gets colored by the color of the screen, not just black and white.
How crazy would that be?!
@@UncleJessy It not a question if it's possible but when will it be possible, then all 3d models will need to be uv mapped and textured for that to work. It still wont look as good as manually painted statues since those also have different varnishes and washes but still will be better than 1 color prints.
Can you share a link to the STL for the model at 0:27?
It’s part of Loubie3D’s patreon as well. I did a RUclips short on it the other week. Another model that requires no supports.
@@UncleJessy I should have known better, you always give the artists credit! Appreciate the videos and the fact you take time to reply to your followers!

Thanks for watching and leaving some comments. Working on a fun new video that I might post today.
Just me who's heart skipped when he removed the vat, to leave a potentially drippy print above the LCD?! lol
Living life to the fullest 🤣
it looks nice, but is this not counter intuitive? I mean, from my understanding, most resin prints get painted afterwards, I mean, everything I currently print, i paint, unless it is a print in place on my fdm printers.
Dayummm! So much work tho 😅
Damascus resin
instead of adding glitter in the Resin, I would spray glitter with clear paint.
Wait wtf, I’m just getting into 3d printing and resin, but how on earth did the prints at the start not need supports? That goes against my tiny amount of knowledge 😂😂
