I think the point of Jez 'name dropping' Dr Tang is not because Dr Tang is some important person/character but rather by Jez saying 'So I didn't give him the number for Dr Tang...' it shows us that Jez did actually know the name/details of the doctor. That is, it confirms Jez maliciously withheld the information, rather then he just couldn't remeber or didn't know the information.
@@MokkaMatti Can't remember if the job at HMV was in the same timeline as the houseboat but maybe he hit the big time, lived it large on the Camden Canal. I'd imagine he is a weird mix of Jez nad Mark. Likes to party, in a band but does well at his steady job at HMV (or wherever he ended up)
You've commented on it a couple of times in videos, so let me clear this up: Toni is wearing a qipao, not a kimono. This is because Chinoiserie (literally Chinese-style) was in fashion in the early 2000s. You can see MJ wear the same kind of dress in Spider-Man, also from 2002. She's definitely the kind of character to jump on a bold, faux-bohemian fashion trend so it makes sense for her character, but it's also probably why the American pilots didn't copy this - it was totally passé in 2005. They definitely could have modernised it to incorporate boho-chic instead. You can really picture her in a fur gilet and tiered skirt, lol.
yeah i thought that was weird, two videos he calls it a 'weird japanese kimono thing' where its just like a normal chinese dress, which people wear pretty often, especially around the time the show was made, but would be totally normal now too
Hes not quite familiar with what was largely a fashion trend 20 years ago. Calling it weird is a bit off but can't blame him for not knowing the difference.
They mentioned 'Paul' in the 'Mark's School Report' in the Peep Show script book as his only friend at school. If it's the same one as in this script, maybe they were thinking of bringing him in a Mark's friend [like Super Hans' is for Jez] but dropped that idea when Johnson came along with it's more interesting dynamic.
While you were talking about 'Paul' I started thinking 'Ooh, bit like Pedge' - and then you reference Pedge almost immediately. This is why I love your channel!
The "is it Jamie Oliver" line by Davina is actually quality. I imagine the other guests telling her things like "someone who suck's d**k" - and for some reason she guessed it was Jamie! Perfect contribution to the show.
I think it'd be interesting to see an edit of the final episode with the original music choices to see roughly how it would've ended up, because I'm struggling to imagine quite a few of them
Fucking brilliant. I am an American who has watched every Peep Show episode maybe 10 times (if you stitched all the clips together) and your analysis has completely nailed it
the funny thing about all these referenced characters like european bob and now paul is that its curious to think how many of them are fully realised and actually exist. suze was only namedropped initially haha
Paul gets name dropped again in the series 1-5 scripts and more book. If you check out Mark's report card from his school, it says "I understand he has even made a friend, Paul Kelper, with whom he plays fantasy role-play games." Pretty cool eh?

@@andrewjones575 you guess correctly. Mitchell and Webb in general aren't very well known. There are plenty of Americans who have heard of them but it's usually people who tend to gravitate towards British media in general
Wow, I hought I was the biggest peep show obsessive ever, until I found this. Amazing. Regarding music, did you know that Stevie Wonder (or his management) didnt permit the use of "I just called to say, I like you" in THAT episode.
There is a Paul who works at JLB, actually. In series 5, Mark says he would fire him instead of the newly pregnant Sophie because he’s a “pain in the arse”, to which Sophie tearfully replies “you would do that for me?”. So apparently Paul is hated by everyone. Maybe Jez gaslit Mark into thinking he was a dick.
Writing what peice of music you want in a script is usually a big no-no in screenwriting, so seeing this script doing it so casually with background music was quite bizarre. Obviously there's the money issue you mentioned. But let's take "Sinnerman" for example. If I hadn't heard Sinnerman, before I even read the first action line I've been taken out of the story. Maybe its different for a final version of a sold script, but I have honestly never seen this before.

Charlie Dawson await, what do you mean? You mean it would take the actor reading the script out of the story? How would it take the viewer out of the story?
"Twot" is the actual American pronunciation of the word twat. The word is used in American English but not very regularly. And it's actually probably being replaced by the British pronunciation. Although in the south we have always said it in the way you do
I remember when I was a child some old people using “twot” because I think “twit” used to be more insulting (like calling someone a r*tard, as a contraction of “nitwit”). Obviously “twat” has always been a bit rude haha. Edit: and also I think originally the term was “king cockmuncher”, not just king. Edit edit: another one was saying “get” instead of “git”. Same deal.
"Twot" is the standard American way of saying twat, unless you're southern. Although I have noticed that younger tend to use the UK pronunciation more, if they ever say the word at all
I very strongly remember this show being called P.O.V. in America when if first streamed here, but for the life of me I can’t find anything with that title card or name. Does anyone else remember this?
I don't think this relates to Mark here, but twot has become US slang, being an acronym of Total Waste of Time. I don't think it's used here in the UK, but could be wrong
I've heard "twot" before, I always assumed it was American for twat or something... EDIT: just googled it. Apparently "twot" is the original pronunciation, and is indeed the most common in America (but almost always refers to a woman, rather than being universal like twat)
My friends use it occasionally, just meaning "vagina". I know "twat" means that too, but it isn't used literally much, I guess "twot" sounds a bit less vulgar. The female version of "cock blocking" is "twot blocking", but I have no idea if that exists beyond my friend group.
@@mankytoes I've only heard 'twot' being used by Americans. In addition to referring to female genitals, twat also means a person who is stupid or unpleasant. King Cockmuncher is an Insult used by one of Matt King's Characters in his Sketch show 'Dogface' in Episode 1. Fun Fact
What we know about Pedge is that Mark & Jez knew him at Darty. Jez likes him & they used to pull each other off. Mark dislikes him.
And his houseboat is never gonna be released from Customs in Rotterdam.
