Zagreus and Dionysus. It's funny because... depending on which interests you have, one is definitely more known than the other. Gamers will be way more familiar with Zagreus thanks to the game Hades, but mythology fans might have never heard of Zagreus, who, in Greek mythology, is barely a footnote. The reality is that Zagreus and Dionysus are actually the same god: One died for the other to live. And with that in mind, Zagreus is definitely more than a foot note, and Dionysus is much more than just the God of Wine. Dionysus is actually older than Greek mythology itself and has his own religion: Orphism. So there is a lot of mythology to uncover with these two, and, like most episodes, this one also starts with Zeus cheating on Hera...:

I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

Notes:
So Dionysus is seriously old, older than Greek mythology itself, and that means this video was a proper pain to put together. It was probably the toughest video yet in terms of weaving a good story. Within the tale of Dionysus (and Zagreus) there are tons of variations and contradictions, so this is also the first video where the extra notes actually got their own chapter. I hope you enjoyed me explaining the mythology a little bit more, rather than just telling a story - let me know. Also, an interesting side note on Dionysus' 'wrath' that you will come across in this video: With every greek god, the deaths they cause are usually just an explanation of natural phenomena. With Dionysus' madness, it's simply the fact that people do crazy things when they're drunk, and since Dionysus is the god of wine - that's the 'madness' he casts on lost souls.

And there Zagreus was. Born into a completely normal family. 😂 I had to stop the video for a second with that delivery.
So the song "Cult of Dionysis" keeps popping into my head during this.
Dionysis is basically the guy I would meet on the subway - very human, can be bad but not evil, only gifted with godly powers. That's why it's good that none of us have godly powers. The world would be dangerous! He is the most human of all Greek gods.
well put James - I like this comment
True.

if you are...lucky.
[however] I wouldn't expect Dionysus to have a form recognizable at all, if appearances be thy standard. [as Apollo is God of appearances and plasticity]
Dionysus be a lot mo trickier.
Love them, i do, nonetheless, so
Cheers
& right on!

The idea of a reborn god appears in many religions, twins as well. No matter how different the stories, places and periods are, some common basic themes often appear. I learned a lot today about the Zagreus and Dionysus story, thank you for making this video.
I grew up say Dionysus - Die-Oh-Ni-Sis. Dionysus/Bacchus is merriment and "good" chaos. He is very much a part of the carnival period leading up to Lent. People often forget carnival is part of a religious experience, the term Bacchanal comes from Bacchus.
Yeah it is a very common story however Dionysius is actually one of the oldest gods in recorded history and he jumps from different religions apparently.
@@diamantemrobinson What religions? Is his name always the same? Tell us more.
@@Ash.Crow.Goddess there's a bunch I'll grab them when I'm off work. He has a few different names and descriptions but they all translate back to the same.
I've definitely had that Charlie moment while studying the Dionysus = wine analogy! LOL! To go further, we can even look at Zeus as the seed (sky god), Demeter as the mother plant (Harvest Goddess), Persephone as the fruit (Spring goddess), then Zagreus as the crushed fruit, which makes Dionysus the wine... oh no I'm Charlie-ing
Just found your channel, definitely subscribing! Awesome work and cute pup
haha I love this comment, and I am following your charlieing all the way
This is genius
dionysus is the college senior we all have a crush on
i’ve never been more grateful for the youtube algorithm than when it recommended me your channel, honestly!!!! i think i’ve watched all your greek mythology videos by now and i enjoyed them all but this one just blew my mind, there were so many things i didn’t know explained so incredibly well. can’t imagine how much hard work goes into making these videos. thank you so much you’re awesome!!!! ❤
awwww 🥹 thank you, thank you. such kind words. I'm happy you found this channel too, and I am glad I could highlight some new aspects of mythology to you
@@Briefed_Mythology thank you for the reply, lots of love from Ukraine!! (also sorry i can’t keep myself from saying that it would be really cool to maybe see you cover the iliad and the odyssey one day hehe)

i love that you played the Liam Neesan 'Taken' scene about Zeus exacting vengeance on Titans to avenge his child
considering the fact that Liam Neesan played Zeus in 'Clash of Titans' and 'Wrath of Titans'
The rebirth part, the wine and the connection to the underworld also makes me think of vampirism. Could be a great plot theme for a movie or video game. Any media or art for that instance.
There is a "branch" of vampires in the legends called Bakkhai, make of that what you will.
This is one of my favorite videos honestly. Made me laugh, made me learn, confused me & made me nod repeatedly. Awesome. Bro you're good! 🙌🏾
This is now one of my favorite channels. Thank you for your hard work! ❤
yay 😊 thank you for watching 😊
I think im the only one who realizes the absolute behemoth Midas is for being able to casually carry a person made of gold, indefinitely.
The name Zagreus originated from Zagros which is the long mountain range in Iran, northern Iraq, and southeastern Turkey. The ancient Mesopotamians identified this mountain range with the chthonic dragon named Kur-which is also the name of the underworld-who kidnapped Ereshkigal (lit. Queen of the Great Earth) who later became the ruler of Kur (and counterpart to the Queen of Heaven Inanna/Ishtar) after the death of the dragon at the hands of Enki. This inspired the story of Kore/Persephone (and Eve). So in other words Zagreus/Dionysus is an alter ego of Hades.
beautiful comment. thank you for adding all this valuable information.
Actually, the two names are similar, but unrelated. It is true that the Dionysus cult is thought to originate from the Zagros mountains, but thats not where the name Zagreus comes from.
Actually isn't it the other way around Hades is a alter ego or retelling of certain parts of Dionysius. Dionysius from what I learned predates every god in the Greek pantheon.
"Thigh" was a euphemism for balls.
well I'll be damned. I did not know that. oh lord that jokes that knowledge would have inspired...
thank you for teaching me
I imagine loin would have been used in that sense, everything says it was his thigh.
Not so much. They would've used Greek words. Loin is a Latin Word anyway, originally. It evolved into English though Old French, via Latin. So, first of all, who are "They?" The English translators, yes? Loin is now an English word, but as you say, they use thigh. Actually, they used thigh because that's the word they chose. We can all read in English, yes? What I meant was that thigh, in Greek, was a euphemism for Balls, in Ancient Greek. But remember, they were translating. But you can go look up the appellations of Dionysos, anywhere. One, Eleutherios ("the liberator") was an epithet for both Dionysus and Eros. Other forms of the god as that of fertility include the epithet in Samos and Lesbos Enorches'
("with balls" [Kerenyi 1976:286] or perhaps "in the testicles" in reference to Zeus' sewing the infant Dionysus into his thigh, i.e., his testicles). The euphemism is ubiquitous in ancient Greek mythology when discussing the sexual organs of men. All the stories "say thigh" because thigh was a euphemism for balls. Saying balls was entirely too scandalous to say in public, especially in print. But that is what they meant, and anyone literate would've understood that easily, in those days, in Greece. You don't have to believe me, though. Go look up the etymologies of the word and the specific works on the various translations. Reading the translated stories alone will not get you there.
@@Ash.Crow.Goddess I stand corrected, thank you for the explanation
Gods are stored in the balls
Still grappling with the analogy of Dionysus and wine but loved your content..great presentation 😊👍
6:40 Yo, this setup is next level!😂😂😂 I felt the trickery and calculation behind your portrayal of Hera despite the seemingly pleasant conversation, and I was like, oh damnn this is not going anywhere good.
Another brilliant video, especially since you tackled what is possibly the craziest, most mixed-up strands of Greek mythology--or actually pre-Greek, as you say. And, as always, your illustrations are marvelous!
yh this one was rough haha quite the puzzle
I want to know more about the pre-Greek aspects.
Man you have quickly become my favorite youtuber. I absolutely love Greek mythology and Norse mythology and you do such an amazing job telling these stories. The jokes are top tier, the storytelling is concise but informative, and the overall video quality is amazing. I was genuinely surprised the first time I looked at your sun count and it wasn’t over a million.. these videos are definitely millions of views worthy. Thanks for posting these videos and keep up the amazing work 🔥❤️🐐
thank you, thank you. such kind words really 🥹 that means a lot and is super motivating, so thank you for just writing that
Word for word my feelings on this content. Truly brilliant.
Zeus is hella messed up fr 😂
Yyt,
That was cthonic Zeus.
People were afraid to speak the name oh Hades.
I love watching your videos! Thank you for so much lore and the way you deliver it. Also, the love for your dog absolutely moves me! ❤
Big ups to you my dude!
he's my baby 🥹 and thank you for watching 😊
I love the art featured at 17:00. It's so joyful!
this was well done and if anyone else has any interest, overly sarcastic productions has a great vid on dionysus as well. you both are really good at expanding on an extremely ancient deity!
I absolutely loooooove OSP. honor being compared to them haha whenever I can, I incorporate them into my research
I believe that Zagreus in mythology is the son of Hades.
They called Hades chronic Zeus yes.
Hades a.k.a. Chthonic Zeus (Zeus of the Underworld).
Only in the games
God of madness and wine? Sounds like the Greeks were grabbling with the dark side of alcohol.
"Pinnacle of inbreeding" made me howl with laughter 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Getting sloppy with his thunderbolt"... DAMN. Keep them jokes coming 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love this channel. Amazing quality work here
thanks, thanks 😊
Best commentary on Greek mythology ever 🤣🤣
I love this video! Love that I am seeing it while studying Orphism. Also, I love "if you wanna hide the baby, why give him to his mother's sister" I loved that.....then I thought star wars and how important *Spoilers*
it was for Darth to never know he had kids, but then Luke is living with his aunt and uncle in the same house Anakin knew of and walked around with the name skywalker. It's the same vibe
I really like the whole duality aspect of Dionysus. And also how making wine also symbolises his journey. I kinda did get a bit confused in the end though 😂 will need to rewatch to understand better.
Holy sweet home Alabama, Batman
You killed it bruh 🔥🔥🔥 philosophical analysis, accurate informations, hilarious puns n etc... on point !!! Just like Zagreus/Dionysus would, you went as deep & profound on the subject in a short amount of time. (ayoooo)
I'm pretty sure zagreus and dionysus just made all that up to trick Orpheus.
Pretty funny though.
Also, big kudos for how you simplified and explained orphism. I've been reading some very dense texts on the subject and I love how you explained everything :) Thank you
thank you, thank you. means a lot to me to hear from someone who studied the texts. means I've done the topic justice
The dog fell asleep 😂😂😂 I love this
rude. he could at least try to pull his weight...
Fantastic video, Dionysus is one of my favorite males in Greek mythology! Can’t wait for Hermes!
here's a weird and goofy fun fact
dionysus was basically a exuse for the greek(or romans) to drink wind whenever they want
Well done King Sparkles 🤣
new subscriber here, you have amazing pronunciation, thats what immediately got me to watch the entire caligula video,
thank you 🥹
i really love the musical selections you play. Not only are they lovely, I am sure they have great meaning - I just need to look them up (my education is not as good as I would like it to be - I recognize the melodies, but I know there is more to them - you clearly don't do things by halves...)
The intros...got me speaking in an accent too..I need someone to introduce me in this manner ❤😂...
Love love the creative process
This is my third video of yours, you're a great story teller, very entertaining, cant wait to watch more of tour content!
I've been a big mythology and history fan through the ages. You see dynasties fall and another rises the same is true for their religions and in this cycle you start to see a pattern. The conquering or newly rising super power of that period adopting the gods from the fallen dynasty just changing the gods name, sometimes the gods sex also. Dionysus is one of the greatest examples of this like you mentioned, the death and rebirth deities through the ages inanna, osirus, shiva, bacchaese, dionysus, baldr, jesus, shamans, there are more im sure, but you get the idea, their stories are all similar.
glad to have you on board Alisa 😊 I hope you enjoy/ed the other videos too. and yes, agreed on how fascinating the rise and fall and the similarities between it all is/are
I live for these puns at this point 😭🙌
It's a brilliant video I really hope you step into other mythologies like the slavic,Celtic etc
definitely planning to move into other mythologies as well 🫡
@@Briefed_Mythology Hindu mythology sometime ?
While the relationship between Zeus and Semele was consensual, if you check Semele's family tree, Zeus and Hera are her Maternal Great Grandparents through her Grandfather, Ares. Semele is the daughter of Harmonia, earthbound Goddess of Harmony and Concord, who is the product of the affair of Ares and Aphrodite when they were trapped in the net. Fearing Hephaistos might do something awful to her baby, Aphrodite sent Harmonia to be raised by the Pleiad Elektra and her husband King Corythus of Italy. Another layer to the story is that Aktaion the hunter was the son of Autonoe (Semele's older sister) and Aristaios the Honey God. He and Semele were around the same age and he was crushing on her at the same time as Zeus, who didn't take kindly to competition from his own Great Grandson, so he sent Aktaion in the direction of Artemis' bath. All of this misfortune is because Hephaistos gifted Harmonia a cursed necklace on her wedding day that would cause her, her family, and anyone else to own the necklace thereafter. Zeus also happened to kill another of his own sons, Harmonia's foster brother Iasion, at Harmonia and Kadmos' Wedding. Greek Gods are messy as hell.
Yoooo… I LOVE your videos and story telling!!! First time ever commenting on anything in RUclips in 12 years!
wow ok thats actually an honor to get the first comment in 12 years. wild. thank you - I really, really appreciate that. for real.
Yet another great video, my brother. Queen and I loved it as always. Hell, this is my 3rd time watching it. Lmao. Which reminds me...did you end the streak of The Rock jokes, or did I miss it somewhere in the video?😂😂😂You went 3 weeks/videos making clever jokes/references about Rock. You can't stop now, don't do that to us, fam. Lol
I did stop the streak 😭 tbh I just forgot about it in this one, but it will be back haha im cooking 🤨

Please do Indian gods too. Love your work!
This was such a great video! 🎉
FYI "Thigh" was an ancient euphemism for testicles...
damn I didn't know that. that...actually makes so much sense
Another masterpice Sir 🎉🎉

thanksgiving in any of the pantheons must be ridiculous 😂😂😂
just getting straight who your wife/aunt/cousin/sister/mother/stepmom/niece is must be tough for zeus
You forgot about sipriotis 😂😂😂 Artemis seems like she always got back in blood 😂😂
are you gonna do a video about nix one day (also love your vids)
yup, nyx is 100% planned as well
You explained this beautifully 👏
I have never heard the part about him helping Midas after the curse. It made me laugh and drop my phone.
I love you so much. Thank you for. doing that about the Greek God that I asked for And I love your channel So much❤❤❤
thank you for watching 😊
Here pulled the same trick on Hercules. Having him see visions of monsters and making him slaughter his own children. Instigating his self exile from thebes.
Hit the nail on the head 20:57 xD
Okay this was fucking awesome! So you’re playing Hades? If Thanatos comes into your bedroom Just Say No! You tell that gloomy spectre “YOU CANNOT TAKE MY BOOTY!”
haven't finished the game yet, but planning to once I get the chance. and none shall take my booty - I hear you 🫡
Hail the Twice Born, Bull-Roarer, Breaker of Chains, Dancing One, Mad God. May you know his Name.
Since I've been watching these videos I catch myself saying "You get me?" to people.
Also I've started explaining my jokes.
I approve both
I just found your channel and I am just 😂😂😂😂😂
You explain things very well
I didn't know dionysus got torn apart. I thought it was Orpheus who got torn apart.
I'm here because I watched a video about Jesus really being dionysus.
I can't help but notice how Dionysus's association with wine is so similar to the christian vision of it. Amazing!
Man I’m still pretty sure it’s chthonic Zeus.
yes I say it at the end of the video. I clear most things up at the end of the video. first its about telling a story, then I clarify.
I love these!!!
thanks mircaly 🫡
My son is named after Zagreus. I just find the name and the mythos of Zagreus/Dionysus interesting and beautiful
side note I love your channel lol
I love this side note
Orphism's denial of the physical for the spiritual mirrors the classic Gnostic belief of the physical world being a trap the soul must deny to reach enlightenment.
Jesus Christ almighty, what a boat load of informatioN!
Zeus have a affair with his misstress, she become pregnant and Hera got angry and try to kill the baby. Mhmmmm, I think this must have a pattern 😅
Hades game mentioned let's gooooo
The City Boy council needs to re-evaluate Zeus’s application because damn 😵💫
agreed
Dog is not impressed 😂
Zagreus can't be son of Hades, because that would be like a plot hole.
Why would Hera be mad at his existence at all? Or why would Zeus choose him as his heir?
I think being the reincarnation of persephone's son is enough excuse to not be troubled by the rules of the underworld.
Was Persephone forced into sleeping with him though?🤔
he seduced her in the form of snakes. don't ask me why that worked better
Do some more detailed videos about Deonysus.
I have always been fascinated with dionysus since he was featured in true blood. I wonder about him being in the 12 olympians tho. Must've happened when he got mainstream. I prefer complicated Dionysus.
Imagine a religion worshiping the son of an all-powerful god who dies and is reborn. And celebrating him drinking wine, no less... crazy idea.
Jokes aside, now it makes sense why Roman historians thought Christianity was a Dionisus worshipping cult.
Some people says jesus and his father Yahweh is basically copied version of Dionysus and his father Zeus.
hmmmm very very interesting. I absolutely can see that.
I have bin watching your vids couple of times and i wonder is their any God who is not psychopathic? 😂
hmmmmm... Hestia?
What about Aphrodita? is she also older than Greek Mythology ? vid (0.0
)?
This is pure horror damn XD
Bewary of nightmares ahead!....
He also tricked Persephone into sleeping with him by mimicking her husband.
(His own brother, by the way,)
Yes he’s her uncle.
So he didn’t just sleep with his own daughter, he catfished her.
😂😂😂
Imagine if this guy was actually God, lol.
My favorite god!!
I hope I did him justice
The Tyson name , from a coat of arms plaque I bought for My dad, was from. of the Greek God Dionysius. ... But. Looking it now. It could be bull. You should do a part 2. He's followers were mad. Lol😂. Good stuff. Learnt a bit more. 👽👍
Where do you get the art for your videos?
I generate the art myself and on my Patreon (link in my channel and description) you can actually get all the artwork 😊
via AI?
I'm reflecting over which norse god that is closest Dionysos. I guess the closest two are Baldr or Kvasir, the god that is Mead.
