The Real God Of War: Tyr (feat. Thor & An Epic Beer Run)

  • Everybody knows God of War... it's a brand name at this point and synonymous with Kratos, and, thanks to God Of War Ragnarök, the name Tyr has become somewhat of a household name as well. But the real Tyr actually has stories of his own, that are both hilarious and disastrously tragic... the latter featuring Fenrir, while the former features Thor and the world's most epic beer run. So, let's dissect the real God of War from Norse Mythology, Tyr, a man mostly known for his bravery, and, for better or for worse, his sense of duty. Since Tyr and Fenrir are inseparable, this story obviously heavily features Fenrir as well, and Thor also makes frequent appearances in Tyr's tales, as do Odin and Loki, which is why this video is a bit longer than my usual content, so do let me know if you enjoy these longer videos. Anyway... let's do this:
Episode 4 Of Keeping Up With The Norse Gods: A Dutiful Betrayal - Tyr
Subscribe For New Episodes Every Saturday & Wednesday
    Notes
All myythologies are tough puzzle to piece together, because at the end of the day... these stories are thousands of years old. They have been re-told and re-written over and over. This is true for any mythology, including the Norse one. With every tale, there are many different versions that were told in various regions over various eras. For the sake of this video - and all my videos - I try to streamline these stories as much as possible and leave out some details, this might bother some, but it makes these videos more fun to watch.I don't want to get caught up in the details and lose sight of the bigger picture.
So... is this accurate and well researched? Absolutely, 100%. Is this the only interpretation or way of recounting the tale of Tyr, Thor and Fenrir? No, but subjectively speaking… it’s the way I like it the most.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

    Sources:
A lot of people ask me about my sources, and… to be honest, they are a mixed bag. One major source is my lifelong interest in storytelling and mythology. Another is the beautiful endless library that is the internet, and, third, I read the occasional book from time to time, which I’m happy to recommend to you, but also… I’m planning to write my own book on mythology, so, in due time the answer will be…:
    Source? Me. Yay.

i'm really digging your channel, my dude. It's a perfect blend of myth with just enough minor embellishment to flesh it out. I adore how you edit the whole thing, and the humor is spot on. The Norse Pantheon is so metal, and you capture the essence perfectly.
Tyr is one of those great B-Character gods. He's well known and does a lot of cool stuff and isn't just mentioned in passing, but you do get the feeling that he was written out of a lot of the narrative of the surviving myths. I have read/heard that Odin's rise to Allfather may very well be due to the fact that as society progressed to the point where you had an important warrior class and a version of nobility, society may gravitate to making a venerated god of knowledge and scholars (a one nobility would often trace their lineage back to somehow ) a lot more important. So Odin was kinda plunked in there as a Big Sky Daddy. Thor was always a popular god of the people, so you know he's going to remain important. Plus, he's the guy you send to finish things...sometimes in a wedding dress, not judging.
My guess is that Tyr (or Tiwaz if you're a fan of Tuesday) really was a very important Indo European sky god thousands and thousands of years ago. Myth and story is written and rewritten by those able to do so, so it would make sense that a god like Odin who is mostly known for a lust for knowledge and kinda being a tricky or cruel dick at times would be placed in such high regard in the myths.
Anyway, excellent job. I'm a fan and will be glued to the channel.

Interesting how the days of the week are Norse Gods for Northern/Germanic Europe and their counterpart Roman Gods for Southern except for Saturday and Sunday.
Lunedì, lundi (Luna) - Monday (Moon)
Martedì, mardi (Mars) - Tuesday (Tyr) - Gods of War.
Mercoledì, mercredi (Mercury) - Wednesday (Woden, Wotan, Odin) - Trickster Gods of thought or language
Giovedì, juedi (Jovis Deis in Latin which means Jove's or Jupiter's day)- Thursday (Thor) - gods of lightning and thunder
Venerdì , vendredi(Venus) - Friday (Frigga) - goddesses of love
Then the weekends get Christian for the Latin and Saturday is oddly Roman for the Germanic North:
Sabato, samedi (Sabbath) - Saturday (Saturn - Roman Cronos).
Domenica, dimanche (Lord's day) - Sunday (Sun, obviously)

Tyr is The Norse equivalent of Ra. The loss is stature is because energy, aka The Light, expends itself (ages/weakens) and The Son (Sun) is constantly renewing itself (Son becomes Father and passes on title of "Son," then Father becomes Grandfather (or Holy Ghost) and passes down title, etc.). Whereas The Night is Eternal. The Mother/Womb where Energy, both good and bad, was created. Forever embracing Her Children, even when they cannot see her because they are Blinded by "The Light." Darkness is creation, light is destruction. Pure (White, not Gold) Light is Purification. Gold is Corruption. The Sun harms, The Moon soothes.
How many different Peoples' Mythology has a Mother Figure that is either represented by Black/Silver or The Night/Moon, and how many have a "Golden" Boy (Sun/Son) that is either respectful/afraid of a "Black" Woman (older religions) OR belittles them and does everything possible to shut them up (more recent)?

50% of the slain goes to Folkvangr (Freya’s world). And the other 50% goes to Valhall. There are other ways to be favored by the Gods than to die but TV shows and most movies woun’t tell you this. Probably because my faith is looked at as a Narnia fantasy that can be played with😀 You could enter Folkvangr or Valhall by dying in battle or because of your deeds and honour in life. So, dying old does not guarantee that you woun’t reach those places. A battle isn’t always physical!

TYR is the god of justice and sacrifice, not war per se, but a part of war that is a commitment to self-sacrifice to achieve honor in battle. So warriors painted or scratched the TYRs rune onto their shields to let him know they were willing to die to achieve justice.

Loki's 3 children with Angrboda is the very same as the Hebrew 3 primodials: Ziz (sky), Behemoth (land), Leviathan (sea). Of course, Hel, the stillborn baby is Hell (not the one that we know now which is the Catholics basing it off of a play: Dante's Inferno).
As for the Thor's drunk escapades, there was a story which he went to the hall of giants (being a half-giant himself) was put on a drinking competition, as you do if you're a giant. They gave Thor a drinking horn and was dared that he could not finish it. Thor didn't know that the beer in the horn is the world's water itself. He basically drank 10% of it. He couldn't finish it but drank enough that it actually dried out some parts of the world and caused droughts and deserts. Another trick was lifting a foot. This foot was Jorgumandr, which was basically the sky (in this tale).
As for the story of Sleipnir, Loki and Thor was tasked by Odin to oversee the construction of the wall of Asgard or something (can't remember). Anyways, the build had a hickup because the giant engineer couldn't get his horse to move the materials. Thor basically made Loki do his thing and Loki transformed into a horse and seduced the horse (make it simp). Horse wouldn't budge till he got babymaking action. So Loki took an L and lo and behold, Sleipnir is born.
Lastly there was only 3 things in the beginning lore of Nordic creation. Ymir (Niflheim), Ganunggagap and Surtr (Muspelheim). Ymir died and created stuff. Somehow a cow was involved (which was weird because there was only 3 or rather 2 things: Ymir and Surtr and the space between them). But anyways, Ymir died and made everything freeze. Some random cow started licking his dead body which is the world at this point and that's where creatures like Tyr and Woden (now known as Odin but is also named Grimnr) came to being alongside Jotuns. Tyr and Woden belonged to Aesir. But somehow Woden married Frigg or Freya (debates on whether or not these 2 are different beings). She/They were Vanirs. Also no clue where they came from. Aesir and Vanir were kinda against each other till these 2 married.
Nordic stories are wild because they're so different from one another. Like, how are you involving a cow when there wasn't one?
Anyways, the Roman Empire basically took all pagan religions and shoved them into 1 with Christianity in turn Ibrahimic pantheon taking the head lead because of guilt and/or fear of killing a god incarnate. Some say that the whole Light God aspect of the religion is based off of the Nordic pantheon. Christian Light god being connected to Baldr after Surtr destroys the world in Ragnarok. Which is also why Christmas is synonymous to the birth of Christ. As well as Easter being the resurrection day of Christ. Those 2 holidays were pretty Nordic in origin. Even the whole Ragnarok was included in Revelations which is Armageddon.

Oden's thirst for knowledge damned a whole family that was down for him. Because of a prophecy. It's like the prophecy predicted Odins paranoia once he went looking for wisedom.

Tyr might suffer from the same issues that plague Hades. As described by Red of Overly Sarcastic Productions Hades is made with very few stories when compared to his brothers Zeus and Poseidon because of some rearranging of older stories. For instance in chthonic greece Poseidon was the King of the Gods and the underworld because of him being the cause for such great disaster as Earthquakes. And Zeus still ruled the skies with nary the sign of Hades anywhere.

Mimir said Tyr was able to grow back his hand though.
