Thanks a lot for watching and safe journeys!
I lived in Italy for five years in the 70/s and 80"s and never knew this city existed. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I must visit on my next trip to Italy. Again thanks.
Matera is simply out of this world
The life-sized statuary figures you show at the start of this vlog are still another example of Italians adorning their cities with art. There are similar sculptures on a main street in downtown Rome. Uncharitably, I would give artwork like this 24 hours or less on a street in Los Angeles before it disappears onto the flatbed of a pickup truck, off to who knows where, never to be seen again. Music tracks here are awesome.
What a very special place! Thanks for sharing such a unique adventure.
A feast for the eyes , thanks !
Loving the content from Italy thanks Gabriel
Spectacular! Thank you Gabriel! Imagine how people lived there, interesting! 😊🌊☀️🙏❤
One of the places in my list! Your hotel room looks a lot like the hotel caves in Cappadocia. I love places with history!
Glad you went here Gabe, I've been wanting to go for years but never got chance yet. Looks just as awesome as it does in the pictures
another spectacular hike and place! Thank You , I can see why they would make movies there!

I gasped at your opening shot. This proving to be your most picturesque journey yet.
Always wondering how Uncle Gabriel could found mignificent&unique place on his every vlog pushing me to always watching his channel 🙇♀️. Vlog today&yesterday seem like where James Bond shooting for film.
'Uncle'? He's going to feel older.
Yes
South Italy aka Magna Grecia because of the 2nd Hellenic(Greek) Colonization around 7th century B.C. The northern Greek colony was Κύμη - Kyme and became the entrance of the Hellenic alphabet to the West. The Hellenes(Greeks) of Kyme were in touch with the Etruscans and supposedly the habitants of Latio where Rome was founded. Until today there are villages in South Italy where the Greek language is still spoken.
Came across your channel yesterday gotta say happy I did.
Cool, enjoy the adventures.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos I will thank you!!! Keep up the excellent work
My Dad and I visited this place in 1984 traveling through Italy in a van on our way back from Brindisi. It was totally unworldly. We had to park 'outside' and then walked through an archway into this vast, mostly uninhabited, huge and SILENT stone city. I remember seeing the caves on the other side of the gorge. My Dad said people had been living there since Paleolithic times. I was 19 years old. I could not remember the name of this incredible place and have Finally found it after years of wondering and asking. No one seemed to know what I was talking about. Unbelievable. I never forgot about this place, sometimes wondered if I had dreamed it.
Very cool. It had been neglected for decades and wasn't a tourist destination until very recently. Then they filmed the last James Bond movie there and that brought it some extra attention, which is how I learned about it.
Awesome Matera City ! Thank you Gabe 👍👍
Love from Nepal ❤️
Nice digs - no backpack this trip. Thx for continued good efforts.
Certainly worth paying a bit extra to stay in such a spectacular historic building right in the old town!
Thank you for the video.
Gorgeous 😍 place. In my next visit to Naples, definitely I will visit Matera. Take care!
Recognise this place from the latest James Bond film
Right up near the top of my bucket list Positano is the furthest south I have been in Italy so far but it is definitely gonna be part of my plans for later this year
Stunning!
I think this cave life issue was brought up in an Anthony Bourdain episode while he was in Italy......those were my favorite travel shows.......RIP AB...
Unreal, definitely put that on our list of places to visit!
Cool, thanks for taking us along Gabe!
Matera took my breath away the first time I saw it, a stunning place.

Fascinating! Never heard of Matera until now.
Amazing video, I’ve been wanting to visit Matera since i saw the James Bond movie, its an extraordinary place. I went to Cappadocia and loved the caves and the history, cant wait to see matera .
My maternal grandparents were from Matera. They came to the USA in 1920 and often spoke to me about it when I was a child. 10,000 years of history of the human race.
Very nice video my frinend. Support you 👍👍
thank you Gabriel! what an amazing place.
Reminds me of your Greece videos.
I never heard of it, until your visit.
🇮🇹
Hope you see Alberobello in the neighbouring province of Puglia. It's famous for its distinctive Smurf-like 'trulli' houses.
What a beautiful city wow great job whit the video super interesting thanks.
Amazing
So impressive 🤩 food👌🍷
Safe journey Gabriel ✌️
Was there teaching back in 2016. The Sassi Di Matera is truly beautiful. And Italian folk were living in the caves until Mussolini kicked em out.
Fascinating history
It was not Mussolini that kicked people out of the Sassi... that happened in the '50s, Missolini died at the end of WWII.
I visited Matera last year and the guide told us that people were kicked out for their own sake. The living conditions were inhumane, so the government built new apartments for the population of Sassi
I had no idea this place existed. Well done Gabe!
I found you after over 1 year. My credit card 💳 changed. So I will fix it my friend. My wife and I love Italy. 2012 and 2019. The shame of Italy 🇮🇹 revived. So glad 🙂 I found your travel show. Fantastic!
Wow. My wish list. Hope to be there very soon.
Fantastic video wow Thanks Gabe
Now I want to go there thanks for the video
Beautiful! I love Italy.
wow !!!! it's so beautiful
Yeah ok this does look cool. Im looking for my next trip idea
Really enjoyable watching.
How interesting. I loved it….
wow G, Matera is incredible! Nice that there is not many people there, must be crawling with tourists in high season. Shame about the weather breaking, hope it didnt last too long.
Italy is of the most and beautiful countries in the world Matera is exceptional and there’s other places in Italy 🇮🇹 like Albero Bello Position and Capri Sermoneto and Ischia a small island connected by a bridge to main land. It’s got this castle on it and was or is don’t know exactly a volcano.
So amazing.....I want to go
Epic
How about the cave lover coming to Australia one day and checking out our caves filled with ancient aboriginal art ;-) ?
Party like a cavernicolo, you fancy traveler!
Wow. If stone walls could speak, well the stories they could tell... So unique. Grazie
That opening shot is like something out of Lord of the rings
Sweet.
Hi Gabriel, This town reminds me of Cappadocia with a lot of similarities I wonder if this was another location for Christians to escape from the persecution of Roman rule. There's another place that you may be aware of or interested in it's in Montserrat, Spain it's a monastery built back in the 9th century I don't if you're aware of this location but do know you are fascinated with these locations I just wanted to bring it to your attention you may want to visit this place.
That place in Spain does look pretty interesting, thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the info. Did not know No Time to Die and The Passion of Christ was filmed in Matera
And some scenes from Wonder Woman
As so much packed with full of collective history and similar to the those cliffs with containing caves carved into those rocks and the entire stone city, whether it is larger than the size of Cappadocia?
No I think there's a lot more to see in Cappadocia, it's a really big area of caves and ancient towns, etc.
Wow did not know that cave city existed thank you Gabriel 👍 😀
Nice!
They need to add planters with trees and flowers to that city.
Awesome Stone City😊👍🏻Thank you Gabe
I too would choose to live in caves especially there. What an amazing city and room. I bet the rooms are cold and would definitely need a heat source. Ty Gabe for sharing this! Passion of the Christ is all spoken in aramaic with English subtitles as you probably know by now. Was a powerful and difficult movie to watch.
Its definitely unique but since beauty is something relative I would say the ultimate beauty for me would be if this stonehouses all would be painted
in many different colors. 😀
Again I discovered something I havent seen or heard before. Thank you Gabriel!
Matera might be the Italian equivalent to Spains Almeria when it comes to places where successful movies were filmed. James Bond and Jesus on one side and Conan and Exodus: Gods and Kings on the other side.
Wow, what a stunning, yet treacherous hike? It must have been challenging to get the whole production crew up there to film Passions of The Christ?! I saw the movie when it came out...not being Christian, I'll keep my opinions regarding the flick to myself. Matera needs to go on my bucket list. Fascinating caves, where people lived. Absolutely surreal views of history.
There's actually a road on the other side, so you can drive there. I've heard mixed reviews of the movie, still haven't watched it.
Melted buildings of the old world.
Interessante
This place must have inspired Minas Tirith!
I would not bother seeing that movie
The passion of the Christ. I remember I did not like it, I and others walked out of the cinema.
It was so violent, bloody!
I cried when I saw it 😥
you should Passion of the Christ for sure! It is pretty intense but is worth seeing and since you have been to the place where the movie was made I think it would be a good thing for you to see.....I seen it at the movies the day it was released with my girlfriend at the time....Peace and safe travels☮
Thumbs up 👍😁
Matera è chiamata la città dei sassi 😁
