The life-sized statuary figures you show at the start of this vlog are still another example of Italians adorning their cities with art. There are similar sculptures on a main street in downtown Rome. Uncharitably, I would give artwork like this 24 hours or less on a street in Los Angeles before it disappears onto the flatbed of a pickup truck, off to who knows where, never to be seen again. Music tracks here are awesome.

South Italy aka Magna Grecia because of the 2nd Hellenic(Greek) Colonization around 7th century B.C. The northern Greek colony was Κύμη - Kyme and became the entrance of the Hellenic alphabet to the West. The Hellenes(Greeks) of Kyme were in touch with the Etruscans and supposedly the habitants of Latio where Rome was founded. Until today there are villages in South Italy where the Greek language is still spoken.

My Dad and I visited this place in 1984 traveling through Italy in a van on our way back from Brindisi. It was totally unworldly. We had to park 'outside' and then walked through an archway into this vast, mostly uninhabited, huge and SILENT stone city. I remember seeing the caves on the other side of the gorge. My Dad said people had been living there since Paleolithic times. I was 19 years old. I could not remember the name of this incredible place and have Finally found it after years of wondering and asking. No one seemed to know what I was talking about. Unbelievable. I never forgot about this place, sometimes wondered if I had dreamed it.

Very cool. It had been neglected for decades and wasn't a tourist destination until very recently. Then they filmed the last James Bond movie there and that brought it some extra attention, which is how I learned about it.

Hi Gabriel, This town reminds me of Cappadocia with a lot of similarities I wonder if this was another location for Christians to escape from the persecution of Roman rule. There's another place that you may be aware of or interested in it's in Montserrat, Spain it's a monastery built back in the 9th century I don't if you're aware of this location but do know you are fascinated with these locations I just wanted to bring it to your attention you may want to visit this place.

As so much packed with full of collective history and similar to the those cliffs with containing caves carved into those rocks and the entire stone city, whether it is larger than the size of Cappadocia?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos

No I think there's a lot more to see in Cappadocia, it's a really big area of caves and ancient towns, etc.

Matera might be the Italian equivalent to Spains Almeria when it comes to places where successful movies were filmed. James Bond and Jesus on one side and Conan and Exodus: Gods and Kings on the other side.

Wow, what a stunning, yet treacherous hike? It must have been challenging to get the whole production crew up there to film Passions of The Christ?! I saw the movie when it came out...not being Christian, I'll keep my opinions regarding the flick to myself. Matera needs to go on my bucket list. Fascinating caves, where people lived. Absolutely surreal views of history.
