    The steel versions of that Titan micro ratchet are solid tools. And what a great bit of work! And your poor man's lathe is hysterically funny, not to mention super-clever. Going to do that to one of mine this week, thanks for the inspired idea!

    Separate comment - I really agree that cutting down tools can return great results. I totally love the Knipex TwinGrips that I cut down to ~ 160mm. This is another example. Big thumbs up and thanks!

    Nice job! For the finishing touch on the black handle, you could blacken the knob end with gun black.

    In my opinion a tool ain’t a tool until you doctorate somewhat to put your own stamp on it. My old man did it for as long as I can remember to the point when my younger brother and I used to call him MacGyver. Funny now when looking back on it that I find myself doing the exact same thing. This video hit home. Thanks for posting Doc and you have a fantastic channel bud.

    Dang Doc, you're a true "renaissance man". Nicely done, functional, affordable, and ergonomically sized! Market it, for sale, at auto stores. Name it; "Doc's Auto Ratcheting Scalpel", ..."for more intricate, detailed, difficult to access surgeries, performed on foreign and domestic cars/bikes/fencing/overlanding vehicles/small engines". I'll even get you a "malpractice" insurance policy, to kick off your new "scalpel" tool design. Your going to be huge Doc!, see you at the tool trade shows!, 🙋‍♂️.

    Speaking of small ratchets, check the VIM 1/4" drive DD2 & 3/8" DD3. They look very similar to the little 3/8" drive Koken 3753SM (of which I've now ended up with two). I really like the Koken; around here it's probably in use at least several times a month, usually as a stubby... wouldn't be without. (I have the 1/4" drive VIM offering on the way; saw it in their catalog yesterday.)

    There are a ton of people out there that have a fit when someone modifies a tool. I’m not one of them. It’s a tool not a person.
    For a time I worked as a millwright, we were always making or modifying a tool, because the job has to be done and the tool dose not exist or it’s way to expensive or takes too long to get.
    They are nice looking all the same. 😬

    I've been wanting to modify the mini-ratchet from my tool check plus so it has a 1/4 hex at the end of the handle, so that the mini-screwdriver could be used as an extension, but I don't have access to a mill right now, and I'm unsure of how I'd clamp the ratchet if I did.

    • @justinjones3499
      @justinjones3499 Год назад

      Palm ratchets just like this wouldn't have alot of torque applied to it and in tight spaces realistically a palm ratchet with a socket is going to come out thicker and taller than a u joint attachment and an extension but honestly when you look at any application where your this up close that you can fit your meaty hand to turn whatever it is there's room for an extension or another tool such as a ratchet wrench etc it's just a matter of having the right tool....perfect example about a year ago me and a coworker were making a brace for something to be mounted to the floor can't remember what but he had about a 4 inch stud sticking up and he was fighting it with wrenches I went and got my husky 3/8 pass through socket set put it on and did in probably maybe a good minute that he was fighting with for probably a good 5 minutes...moral of the story better to have something and not use it all the time than need it and not have it especially if you work in a field where projects are time sensitive or production based or just to make yourself look better at pay raise time I could of said I did 25 of those jobs by myself in the time it took him to do say 15 or 20 and they'd never know it wasn't skill but just being prepared .

    If the idea was to make as compact a package as possible, why did you modify two ratchets instead of just using the one ratchet with an adapter to drive sockets/bits?
    Don't get me wrong, I think it was worth it just for the cool factor alone, and I'm totally going to copy you. Just wondering if there was also a practical reason?

    Dang, you stole my idea I came up with, minutes ago, and then must've used a time machine to make these a year ago. Ha ha.
    Actually if you take ideas from posts, here's mine. My full idea was to take one of these Titan 11318s and chop it down, like you have, but then flatten the sides (grinder? file?) into a 1/4" hex shape so it'll fit in my multitool bit driver hole that takes 1/4" bits, kinda like a (now discontinued, I hear) Leatherman "ratchet driver" (but for normal bits, not Leatherman skinny bits) for a fraction of the price, plus the head pivots.
