I'm glad to learn sauna is pronounced sauna and not sauna. My friends say sauna but now I'll know to tell them no, sauna is pronounced sauna and not sauna!
One night when I was a kid, my dad came home from work and heard Bill Beutel from Eyewitness News pronounce sauna wrong. OMG. Steam was shooting out his ears. Next thing I knew, he'd called the station and was yelling, "It's pronounced SOW-na, Goddammit, SOW-NA, not SAW-NA!" I always say it correctly and explain to people I'm a Finn (on my dad's side) and we invented it, so... I'm correct." I actually just got home from meditating in the sauna at my gym. It's why I joined.
Phonetically sauna IS sauna. I don't understand how they would actually pronounce it souna. But getting upset about English phonetics is a recipe for a miserable life...
Great introduction to the theory and practice of the sauna - Sauna 101. My only criticism is that there's no mention of the vasta/vihta! People who aren't acquainted with the sauna might find the vasta a bit.... odd (maybe alarming)... the first time that they see one in use. Oh, and your pronunciation is just fine. (It's better than mine, and everyone understands me.)
It's just like Nikon being pronounced as Ny-kon rather than Nee-kon. It stands to reason varying dialects are going to pronounce things differently. Shocker, I know.
It’s pretty ironic that many English-speaking people liken rooms clad with wooden panel with ”a Swedish sauna” when ”sauna” is the Finnish word, saunas originate from Finland and the Swedish word for sauna is ”bastu”.
@@BrightTripTravel Without to much detail since its YT, it is sort of a test how much people are actually comfortable with nudity. First one is about not laughing first, second is about being lucky and precise. Since i heard it all from 5 Finnish girls at student exchange and they demonstrated it on a plush figurines they had as local Helsinki uni merch - sounded believable. Also played it with random army official on a train our group was traveling using that plush figurines. Nothing mentioned here is sex as a disclaimer, dont ban me please XD
@@SchilkeSmooth "suu liha" got a laugh out of me! You're doing great man, hienosti menee ja jatka samaan malliin! Ihanaa että löytyy ihmisiä joita kiinnostaa tämä pieni maa tarpeeksi että lähtee opettelemaan näinkin vaikeaa kieltä, ja vieläpä noin hyvin!
Spoiler alert: you've been pronouncing every English word which was borrowed from another language wrong the whole time. Honestly, the forced pronunciation got a little annoying after the first minute.
In Poland we pronounce it the same way as in Finland. So I guess I’m ready to go to Finland and communicate easily😉.
same in serbia
Yes, that is definitely how languages work.
Exactly the same here, in Russia
SUPER ready! 🙌
Amazing video, AGAIN. WTF - welcome to Finland
Hahahahaha YES 😂
Summer, sauna and beer 😇 after sauna swimming is the best 😊

We read sauna and sauna differently 😂
I have been saying this for so long! Finally someone has balls to say it _out loud_...

This video was so fun watch!! Now I can flex on all my friends by pronouncing sauna the Finnish way
Hahahaha YES

This was SUCH an awesome video! Loved the stop-motion illustrations.... and now I want to hang out in a sauna
Same!

Possibly the great vowelshift, but yes. English speaking and writing should not even be considered the same language.
Here in Portugal the pronunciation is "sáuna", pronounced the same way as in Finnish.
How cool!
There is even a sauna in the finnish paliament
Amazing!
I feel the same with skyr - I get if it’s hard for non-Icelandic speakers, but it just sounds wrong to say “skeer”
How do you say it?
@@Jay-ho9io I don’t know how to write it phonetically, but this video shows it (also it’s kinda funny)

This is so well put together.
Thanks 😊
This is brilliantly accurate and I haven't even finished watching!
This is awesome man! Amazing video!

We've been pronouncing it right in German all along 😇
Amazinggggg
Great video!
Thanks!

I like the animation. Care to tell me what software you use for that?
It's all papermotion with a greenscreen! I'll have a video out soon about it!
@@SchilkeSmooth Awesome, ty. It's nice to see a "lower tech" approach, very unique!
@@johnwarthunder1990 Got a little tired of my laptop crashing and breathing heavy with After Effects, plus the old school style is kind of fun!
Excellent.
I've been pronouncing it wrong this whole time.
We're all learning!

We pronounce Detroit wrong too, don't mean I am going to start saying it right haha. Thanks for the informational video tho!

I'm Finnish and I'm the only one I know that doesn't have a sauna.

Jawlapeno...
Are you really a finnish speaker? The pronunciations of "ovi kiinni" "allas" and "löyly" didn't sound right. Great video btw

It actually is very difficult to say something in different language when you are speaking some other language.

Did you watch the video? He’s a Finnish speaker and that’s literally how it’s pronounced. It would be more “forced” for him to say it the wrong way.
Okay bobby have a nap
youre banned from the sauna
Everyone in Finland says sow-na.
@@GifvoivPlays no. We pronounce it sauna. Just the way it's written
