  • In this video I discuss how much you should aim to spend on building your mastering chain. This question is somewhat subjective and budget does come into play. On a budget of £10k to £20k this is what I would select.

      The room is the most important thing. You could have the best gear in a terrible room and you have terrible gear.

    The old adage - "It's not what you've got, it's what you do with it" comes to mind. My humble non "influencer" opinion is that one can definitely get away with (well chosen) high quality plug ins alone, as long as you know what you are doing. Definitely don't need to spend 15k on outboard. Just my 2 cents as someone that got the hardware bug and is coming to realise that (personally) it's a bit of a folly. I have racks of neve,ssl, IGS, TK, Wes, SPL, etc.... Good D/A, speakers, room and knowledge/experience will do it. But gear addiction is real.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  10 месяцев назад +1

      100% a bad ear on expensive gear equal a bad master. However as someone with a good ear, expensive gear, a perfect room, good conversion and every plugin available. I know deep down as much as I want it to be true to save myself time and money. When it comes to mastering I can achieve a better result with hardware in a shorter amount of time every time. Even if plugins got to the point where they were 100% identical, to achieve a master using plugins takes far more time than getting hands on with hardware. One day soon plugins will get there. For me achieving my goal faster is worth the investment into analogue equipment. For me time is money. And if can perform 10 masters in a day compared to 5 masters in a day. It's worth it. For the hobbyist 100% stay in the box.

    This is great advice and l prefer this realistically than the " get the best you can afford" advice which is not helpful. For mixing now what if any are 3 hardware you'd recommend once your monitoring, room is right and youa also have a trinnov?

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio

      For mixing you can use a lot more affordable units. I'd personally look at channel strips and get lots of them. I'm going to go for mcdsp. Recall is a big thing when mixing. So a bettermaker eq and compressor would be a great option.

      @migibeats104 the way I saw this when comparing plugins to mcdsp is plugins didn't have that mojo. The mcdsp had a weight and umpf to them you weren't getting with a plugin.

    Hi Paul. Love all the content you do, it has helped me a lot! What do you think about the Blackbox vs MBT? (in terms of everything, saturation, versatility etc).

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  10 месяцев назад +3

      I'm a good person to ask as I have both in the same chain. The blackbox is better for saturation but the MBT brings a lot more to the table. The super silk is really good. The two boxes aren't alike really. If you got either you would love the sound you get.

    Hey Paul, I'm looking to start coming out of the box as a producer / mixing engineer. My first buy was going to be the SSL fusion, however you sold me on the Neve MBT, am looking to start building a chain for really good mixes that I can then pass on for mastering, is there anything else with a budget of around 10k to start you would reccomend. The SSL BUS+ and MBT our my first two that i have in mind. Thanks Paul its Phil Cardiobeats btw.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  10 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Phil. The MBT is a great choice. What you want to think about is getting gear that helps finalise your mix ready for mastering. The MBT will give you a little bit of everything. Width, colour, EQ and subtle bus compression. This is a great place to start. The bus plus is also a good option for bus compression. The only other thing that could be good to add with those two is a nice 4 band EQ. Not a crazy expensive EQ but more around 1 to 3k mark. A maag eq4m would be a good option. Or even getting into 500 series and adding a few different units. The Elysia xfilter neo is a good option in 19" rack format.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  10 месяцев назад

      Of course. If you had 6k i'd go down the route of building a Bettermaker chain. EQ compressor and limiter. You have really good saturation in the limiter. You also have recall with all 3 units. And these units will stay with you even if you ended up spending 100k on a master chain later in life.

    Hey Paul I know a lot of people advise against it but due to my living conditions I’ve started mixing in Neumann NDH 30’s. I can’t really afford to move out of my apartment and my HS8s don’t get the room they deserve. Is it even worth it for me to start buying hardware? I’d like to start mastering outside my daw but would it even be worth it to spend the money with my situation?
    I finished the audio engineering program at the LA film school and have been mixing and mastering my own stuff for a good 5 years now so I have a decent grasp on what I’m doing. Just can’t afford buying a house in California rn.

      Stay in the box mate. You will gain that extra 5 or 10% with analogue equipment. Your own personal finances are much more important than outboard gear. As nice as it would be to have analogue gear. You are better off not stretching yourself financially.
