Those series were magical. To see players going all out not willing to cede anything. To see MJ get his head mashed in, time and time again not complain, not run, not sit out, not bitch about what he had and still get up was the best part about this matchup.

I think if MJ and the bulls would've gotten a ring in 88 if the pistons didn't have home court on all 3 series. In 90-91 bulls was the best in east conference and then swept Detroit. You noticed 2 of 6 finals they started on the Road. But they couldn't get there because of Detroit Pistons. MJ was avg 35+ with Doug Collins then dropped to 31 PPG with Phil Jackson still winning NBA MVP. Hadn't he trusted his teammates couple years sooner he probably would've had 8 rings. We'll never know but I believe he would've he was that mentally tough including skillful

Yes, MJ said himself that the Pistons was their toughest opponent. If they beat the Pistons in 89 and 90, logic wise they would won the titles cuz they won the most games against the Pistons too while the Lakers got swept and Blazers only won 1 game.

    • @OlJackBurton
      @OlJackBurton 26 дней назад +1

basketball is about matchups, not the transitive theorem lol. but either way, the '89 Pistons didn't beat a complete team their entire postseason run. the first round, they played the Celtics without Bird the entire series and the rest of the team was old as dirt. the second round they played the Bucks whose star Terry Cummings was hurt in the previous series and missed the entire second round except for a few minutes of game 3 where he tried to play.
in the ECF, the Pistons played their brand of thuggish basketball and were still down 1-2, before turning up the Jordan rules up another notch in game 4 and for good measure turned it into the Pippen rules too. In the very first minute of the crucial game 6 in Chicago, Laimbeer came down on Pippen's head with a dirty elbow during a rebound and basically concussed and knocked Pippen out. Pippen had to have his motionless body dragged off the court by referees while the Pistons were playing 5 against 4 until the Bulls could call a timeout. even a sophomore Pippen was a problem for the Pistons and they decided to take him out dirty.
then in the Finals, the Lakers were without Byron Scott the entire series and Magic basically only played the 1st game and tore his hamstring early in game 2. he had strained his hamstring earlier with Byron Scott in an intense practice a week before the Finals after they swept Phoenix in the WCF. but the tear in game 2 effectively ended his season. he tried to go again for a few minutes in game 3 but he had to come out for the last time. so the Lakers then only had Worthy and 42 year old Kareem on his last legs for the Pistons to deal with. people make fun of the 2024 Celtics for having such an easy path to their Finals victory, but the '89 Pistons had an even easier path.
the next year the 59 win Pistons didn't have such a cakewalk for sure lol, but they now had "championship experience" but played much weaker teams all around, outside of the Bulls of course. they swept a 42 win Pacers team with a young Reggie Miller, then beat a 45 win Knicks team before Pat Riley became the coach, 3-1, and then played the 55 win Bulls to 7 games where Pippen, finally an All-Star, had his infamous migraine game where he went 1-10 in the field but still played 42 very ineffective minutes hurting the team. they then played the 59 win Blazers. the 63 win Lakers had lost in the second round to the Suns they had swept the previous year in the WCF. so the Blazers weren't even the best team coming out of the west. but all of those losses except game 3 were very close, within 3 points in game 4 and 5 and within 6 points in game 1. if the inexperienced Blazers had won game 1, it could have been a very different series, with games 3, 4 and 5 in Portland, although not until 2004 did a home team ever win all 3 middle games of the Finals in that format.
still those bad boy Pistons never beat a 60 win team or the healthiest best team in the league either of those years, and are overrated imo. they do not have a signature series in their entire title runs, especially 1989, and their best competition they faced in the those playoffs was in their own conference followed by the weakest version of the early 90s Blazers. once MJ got stronger and Pippen became great and the other Bulls players improved, they easily handled the Pistons sweeping them the next year and were never challenged by them again...

I don't know if you were around back then but the entire culture of NBA basketball was different. Remember, the Pistons were the most hated team in NBA history and the NBA made policies to enact the 'flagrant foul' rules which means two shots and the ball if an official deems a foul excessive, so that's a five point swing -- now this isn't why the Pistons lost or Chicago won but the NBA never changed any rules while the Lakers, Celtics, and Pistons were competing for titles ... when there was a consistent pattern of Jordan not winning, they enacted the flagrant foul rule. Plus, the Pistons didn't get special treatment -- the rules were the same for everybody. If the Pistons fouled you, you could foul them back; if you got hit on a cut, you could hit back; if they fouled you, you could foul them back. Remember, Cartwright elbowed Isiah Thomas in the head in the 1988-89 season drawing blood in the Jan 1989 game which led to the fight in the April of '89; Pippen clothes lined Bill Laimbeer in mid-air in game 5 of the 1990 Eastern Conference Finals; everybody got fouled hard, the Pistons just didn't complain to the league office or the media .... Plus, Thomas missed 34 games with scaphoid surgery to his shooting wrist in Jan of 1991 and came back and when they played the Bulls, Jordan, Pippen, Armstrong, and Paxson kept hacking his wrist without calls ... so that's just how the game was played then. The Pistons weren't dirty, evil, or 'bad' for the game, it was media propaganda because Jordan was the next guy the league was promoting and he couldn't win from 1988-1990, he could NOT past the test, so Isiah Thomas and the Pistons let him win in 1991 then broke up that team. This is why I always point out the reality of the facts that took place. If your scorers do not shoot and your coaching staff doesn't play your front court major minutes, what will happen?
This is what Detroit did ... the 3 guys that led the 'walk-off' were all from Chicago: Mark Aguirre, Bill Laimbeer, and Isiah Thomas.
Isiah Thomas 3, Michael Jordan 1, the one Jordan got, Thomas gave to him.

1991 ECF Facts: Isiah Thomas took just 9 shots in game 1 and just 9 shots in game 2 of the 1991 ECF; Bill Laimbeer took just 7 shots in game 1 and only 2 shots in game 2; Joe Dumars took only 10 shots in game 1 and just 10 shots in game 3; Pistons Coach, Chuck Daly played John Salley only 9 minutes in game 2 while playing James Edwards only 11 minutes in game 2 and just 9 minutes in game 3.
So, if your scorers don't shoot and your coaching staff doesn't play your front court major minutes from games 1-3, what will happen if you play anybody? Forget the team and opponent, if anyone did that, what would happen?
Chicago had a 117-76 foul shot attempt advantage against Detroit from games 1-3. Game 1: Chicago won 94-83, Chicago shot 37 foul shots, Detroit 15; Game 2: Chicago won 105-97, Chicago shot 45 foul shots, Detroit shot 25; Game 3: Chicago won 113-107, Chicago shot 35 foul shots, Detroit 36.
If you do the math, even if both teams shot 100% from the foul line, there was no way Detroit could have won any of the first 3 games.
This is the reality of what happened in the 1991 ECF and then in the off season, Pistons GM, Jack McCloskey waived Vinnie Johnson and traded James Edwards to the Clippers. The Pistons broke up their title-contending team.
Bottom Line: The Pistons' scorers didn't shoot, Chuck Daly didn't play his front court major minutes and refs gave Chicago a 117-76 foul shot attempt advantage and the Pistons broke up their team in the off season and stopped competing for championships.

    Portland didn’t “fumble” the bag
Portland already had Clyde Drexler at SG and needed a big man in the pain so they drafted Bowie, had Bowie been honest about his injuries then Portland probably would have accepted the trade offer of Sampson from Houston, that would have been a “fumble” because Houston would have had Hakeem MJ and Drexler
