Phil LaMarr, a legendary voice actor. You can't tell he plays that character until you read the credits or find out by yourself. And when you do find out, your jaw drops by how wide ranging his voice can be for the many characters he plays.
I wish this video was an hour long. Phil seems like such a cool guy with interesting stories and ideas. Static Shock was one of my favorite shows as a kid, Samurai Jack was my favorite as a teen (and still one of my top 5 now) and Futurama is my favorite as an adult. I love learning more about the people behind the voices of these things.
I always tell my friends "Phil LaMarr is the male version of Tara Strong" in reference to the sheer number of animated voice roles he's had. He's always been an inspiration of mine, extremely versatile and memorable in any scenario. Actors in animation deserve way more credit than they get, and as an animation fan, bringing words on the page to life is one of the most noble professions in my humble opinion.
Had no idea Phil LaMarr was behind all these legendary voices. This man made my childhood/teenage years. Can't wait to hear more Hermes Conrad on the new Futurama episodes coming out.
This dude has an incredible memory. He remembered the exact line Hermes said in Futurama, he remembered Jon Stewart's Green Lantern number. I would love to see him play the "did you say that" game on Jimmy Kimmel.
Now, this is the kind of interview we want. This man gave so many children across the world characters that they could sympathize with and marked so many people's childhoods.
he is so good you can immediately recognize him in his most famous roles, but still versatile enough that I personally had no idea he was bolbi or Hermes
Phil, your voice acting for Wilt really helped me as a kid. I resonated so much with his personality and still to this day have similar mannerisms. Thank you for voicing him!
I was having a hard time believing he was Green Lantern AND Static Shock. The voices and personalities were so much different. Is good to get to know the actors behind those voices.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I yelled "Wilt!!" I remember watching Samurai Jack, Static Shock and Foster's Home with my son when he was young. But I also remember watching him on MadTV and in Pulp Fiction when I was young! He's had such an amazing career.
Props for him for voicing such an array of characters and nailing all their voices. Thanks for voicing a lot of my favorite childhood cartoons and making my childhood overall an awesome one!

Morgan Freeman: "black history is American history" Also Morgan Freeman: "You want a white history month?" Me seeing these comments... "Morgan Freeman was born in the wrong century!"
I thought that only applied to white actors playing nonwhite roles. Didn't know it would apply to everyone. This madness needs to stop. It doesn't do anything to stop systemic racism.
@@canaisyoung3601 cancel culture is going to start disproportionately affecting minorities (ESPECIALLY blacks) soon, in just a few years. Mark my words. Phil LaMarr is going to get cancelled for voicing a Japanese guy. Just you wait. Soon Hispanic and black voice actors are going to be cancelled. Very soon cancel culture is going to do a 180 and will start telling black people what they can and can't do.
I mean voice acting talent needs to find more people as most voice acting is like 20 people. That’s how you help everyone expand the pot of voice actors and higher good talent and get talented people into good roles like Samurai Jake. Once everyone is limited by race what voice you can play we will lose a lot of good talent options. Got now big focus is whites in non white roles but there’s already talk of others playing outside their race.
Samurai Jack is to this day still my favorite show ever and Phil's performance as Jack is a huge part of that, with a character who doesn't have much dialogue, he really makes every line count and makes what could come off as a boring character in weaker hands seem so personable yet powerful.
Vamp: Combination of both. Jack (Raiden) Tried to kill him for years, he is "immortal " "vampire" (really normal, but infused with nano machines that make him immortal. Only to be killed, when he was injected with a syringed that took away his power and made him suffer every would he had all at once and die.) - Condensed version of MGS2 Phil Lamar's Character
My single favorite Green Lantern, ever. He took his job serious, among the other Green Lanterns he made so much more sense. Samurai Jack is basically thee icon of Action Cartoons.
Goodness me, I had no idea what Phil LaMarr looked like before I watched this but boy, he looks great! Not to mention an extremely versatile VA. I mainly know him as Hermes in Futurama but he effortlessly jumps into so many characters just by switching his pitch, tone or placement - he deserves to be recognised as one of the great voice actors for sure!
Him being the voice of Static Shock threw me for a loop ! How can he do such a demanding deep voice for someone like green lantern and then do such a teenager like voice flawlessy ! I mean it was so convincing !

😆
What a talented man.
Dude's a legend
I wish this video was an hour long. Phil seems like such a cool guy with interesting stories and ideas. Static Shock was one of my favorite shows as a kid, Samurai Jack was my favorite as a teen (and still one of my top 5 now) and Futurama is my favorite as an adult.
I love learning more about the people behind the voices of these things.
You’re not “just a voice” you were the voice of my childhood
"Sure I can do that, I auditioned for Cool Runnings like every other black guy in 1980 whatever"
Dead
I always tell my friends "Phil LaMarr is the male version of Tara Strong" in reference to the sheer number of animated voice roles he's had. He's always been an inspiration of mine, extremely versatile and memorable in any scenario. Actors in animation deserve way more credit than they get, and as an animation fan, bringing words on the page to life is one of the most noble professions in my humble opinion.
Great comparison! Both are such talented actors that have played huge parts in shaping many peoples' childhoods.
“Aw man i shot Marvin in the face”
Lol
HE’S MARVIN, that’s crazy
@@milesmorales2106 Yeah! No idea that was him!
"Man, I don't even have an opinion"
Are you serious? He's marvin in resident evil 2 remake?
I have a feeling that he is extremely and almost unnaturally ripped
Have you ever seen him delivering UPS packages?
@@HeavenlyFloodofRegen It's UBS on MADtv.
All that smooth walkin' he did got him in shape
Legend-tier voice actor. Versatile and doesn't use the same approach for every character yet made it iconic and memorable. Salute.
he is so good you can immediately recognize him in his most famous roles, but still versatile enough that I personally had no idea he was bolbi or Hermes
Phil is a very underrated voice actor. I love that he gave gennedy some love cause in terms of animation, samurai Jack was game changing
God the amount of style Genndy put in that show. The choreography, the visuals, the music, the crazy characters. Incredible to this day.
He's not underrated at all
@@LordDefekator lol I was going to say the same thing. He's one of the most accomplished and acclaimed voice actors in the country.
Underrated? Tf you mean, hes renown all over and incredibly famous for all the voices he does, bruh.
Underrated is not a bad thing. He just isn't as well known as guys like Frank welker or tom Kenny.
And don't forget he was shot by Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction.
4:54 they didn't
"ah, i shot marvin in the face"
Dead african american storage
He was in step brothers
@@myztik5716 Yea he did during the car scene
Phil, your voice acting for Wilt really helped me as a kid. I resonated so much with his personality and still to this day have similar mannerisms. Thank you for voicing him!
He was like the big friendly jock I wish I had in my high school experience.
I was having a hard time believing he was Green Lantern AND Static Shock. The voices and personalities were so much different. Is good to get to know the actors behind those voices.
All this time he was just talking to himself everytime Virgil and John is on screen.
I wish he would have talked about “Vamp” in the Metal Gear series 😭
Carlos Trevino whaaaaaat....?
I know!
I was hoping for that too
Five today.. or rather, six?
❗
Its crazy on how some of his roles he had some form of experience or knowledge to help him voice the character so talented
I love how he improvised Bolbi’s lines lol.
Of all of the voices I was surprised he did, that one definitely blindsided me lol
can we get more of these with other voice actors (Mark Hamill, Tara Strong, John DiMaggio etc.)?
Kevin Conroy, pleeeeeease!
Yesss! I’d love to see one with Cree Summer.
+ Maurice LaMarche
and Patrick Warburton
I think there's a mini doc about Tara strong somewhere on RUclips x
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I yelled "Wilt!!" I remember watching Samurai Jack, Static Shock and Foster's Home with my son when he was young. But I also remember watching him on MadTV and in Pulp Fiction when I was young! He's had such an amazing career.
“You have won this time, Samurai, but I shall return!”
Ollie Williams: “AKU!”
Props for him for voicing such an array of characters and nailing all their voices.
Thanks for voicing a lot of my favorite childhood cartoons and making my childhood overall an awesome one!
I wish I could let this man know how much all of these characters meant to me.
Did "slap slap slap, clap clap clap" help you decide what to do in life? It did for me.
Yeah static shock and green lantern are some of my favorite superheroes because of him.
6:31 man, that voice is so calming.
as a black man, this is an incredibly amazing underrated type of success/impact. i love everything about this.
Speak on it!
Deserves every bit of respect.
I can understand why brother 💗
Preach
Hearing him talk about Samurai Jack makes my heart so happy.
That series finale broke my heart. Because it was very bad.
@@ComicsLamar Please, it wasn't THAT bad.
Villager of SmashVille But you still acknowledge that it was bad. Which just disagree on degree.
Phil: does so many characters with so many different voices you cant even recognize its Phil most of the time.
Internet: *sleeps*
Justing Roiland: does two voices and screams a lot
Internet: *OmG HoW DOes HE Do THaT wiTh HiS vOiCe*
It honestly bothers me when people praise Justin Roiland as a voice actor.. yes it’s impressive that Rick and Marty sound different but literally EVERY other voice sounds like Morty
You all have to understand: this is roughly 2% of this man's total acting career
Yeah but with voice actors,we dont know their face unless they are like internationally famous.
And like 0.0000001% of his true power
We need to recognize Phil Lamar in Black History
simeon j real talk voice actors in cartoons were how my mom started to teach me black history.
Morgan Freeman: "black history is American history"
Also Morgan Freeman: "You want a white history month?"
Me seeing these comments... "Morgan Freeman was born in the wrong century!"
JsRandom Gaming who said anything about a month? Being taught a history shouldn’t be relegated to a month. Don’t assume any of us asked for it.
Agreed
Him and Dwayne McDuffie are actual legends
Static Shock was one of the "OG" GOAT cartoon shows.
One of my favorite cartoons growing up!
Such a underrated and amazing show.
Man if this trend of voice actors not being allowed out of their race we are loosing the only Samurai Jack I will except.
AMEN!!! They better NOT do that to him! Not ever!!
@@colleen4ever it's happening now, crap....
Just kidding 😂
Aku: Tried to kill Jack for decades, failed.
Vincent Vega: His gun went off, succeeded
"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"
I think about that speech once in a while and get chills down my neck, hearing that in his voice
Thank you Jon Stewart
Nice line, NOT RYAN REYNOLDS, but Jon Stewart.
Him being the voice of Static Shock threw me for a loop ! How can he do such a demanding deep voice for someone like green lantern and then do such a teenager like voice flawlessy ! I mean it was so convincing !
That's what being a voice actor is, practicing even when you arent doing them in studio, keeps the vocals fresh.
Wow, his Static voice sounds exactly the same as it did 20+ years ago, crazy
His Bolby voice is raspier tho
Phil was a voice in every single one of my favorite childhood stories, especially Samurai Jack, and Justice Leauge. I remember purposefully sneaking out of my room late at night to be able to watch new JL episodes as they came out. Thank you Phil for helping create my love of story telling.
Phil LaMarr is always Green Lantern
The best John Stewart
Always static shock ⚡⚡
The best. I love that JL show. I didn’t know he voiced him. Amazing.
True.
@Osman Yousif yoooo I forgot about that!!!
This guy has to be in the Mount Rushmore of voice acting
Who would the other three heads be?
@@andywap3 John Dimaggio, Mark Hammil, Tara Strong
@@Kevinlord93 What about the god among men: Mel Blanc?
@@tobeornottobe5611 You are completely right. I guess replace Hammil with Mel Blanc. Completely forgot about him since he died before I was born lol
@@Kevinlord93 Don't forget Peter Cullen
Listening to him speak, he seemed really smart. Then I looked him up and saw he went to Yale. Makes sense.
Thank you for making my childhood great and memorable. John Stewart Green Lantern, Samurai Jack and Static Shock some of the greatest characters on some of the greatest shows ever. Thank you
