    This is a great whiskey. I just picked up a case at publix liquors in FL, It was BOGO! $56.00 SAVINGS per bottle on the 6pk.
    Its fantastic. Very smooth for a 100 proof. I tasted this next to Colonel Taylor Bourbon, Jeffersons reserve and Blackened. Easily the best. Its definitely worth the $55.00 price range.

    That’s not a picture of Nearest, that is his son. The story of this guy is epic, if you are more interested in it please look it up. He was one hell of a guy and it is some great tasting whiskey.

      I can admit to making a mistake, but I'm not sure if I made one here.
      Both google and even Uncle Nearests website cite the guy I put in my video as Uncle Nearest. Something that old could be improperly documented but I'd like to see evidence.

    I appreciate this channel. I'm a gin drinker, but I really appreciate learning about whiskey. I like that. I'm starting to understand, and enjoy, whiskey, too. Thank you!

      Have you tried Portland gins? Or whiskey? James Oliver Rye, and Burnside Bourbon are amazing. Would you care to do a review of either?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 лет назад +1

      I'm always game to do reviews. Maybe I'll reach out to them and see what's up. Unless of course you have a connection?

      Sadly, I'm not sure I can refer you to anyone in particular, but I do know some of the local producers. If you like I can help introduce you to the spirits of Portland. Are you on IG? I'll msg you my email so you can contact me offline.

    The economic term you're looking for is "economies of scale". These little niche distilleries can't benefit from the discounts on buying large amounts of raw materials and don't produce enough to lower the per unit fixed costs needed (equipment, machinery, rent). Love the videos, keep it up.

    I tried this today. Cherry, woody and sweet. Goes down ridiculously smooth for 100 proof. I like it.

    My son gave me a bottle of Angles Envy. Have you tried it? To me, it was as you described the Uncle Nearest. Neither of us liked it. He even apologized to me for it being so bad. But, after decanting it for about 3 weeks, it became very pleasant to drink.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 лет назад +1

      I'm glad you ended up liking it. I enjoyed Angel's envy the first time I tried it, but that was back in 2013 when I think they were still MGP sourced. I'd be interested to try it now

      My older brother loves Angel's Envy and gave me a pour when I visited him last. It was great, we finished the half a bottle he had left and could not find anymore(small town in southwest Va) while there. I brought 3 bottles down from Maryland on my visit and when we opened a bottle, it tasted like crap to me. He explained that it seems to breath and taste better after a couple of weeks like you described.

    I like your reviews. You made a statement about getting samples and not wanting to review those you don’t like basically because you don’t want to offend the person that sent it to you. I’d challenge that line of thought. Personal opinion... I think you should still review it. Folks obviously appreciate your breakdown of whiskey, opinion, etc... I think the bad should come with the good. You seem to be a kind and fair person... people will appreciate you for that. Keep up the good work.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 лет назад

      Thanks Brian. I go back and forth on this one as well... it's a tough one, more of a personal ethics kind of thing... someone gave me something for free, I don't need to bash them on the internet. I will occasionally mention things that I don't enjoy on the live streams, but I don't do major videos just to say "this sucks".
      I may change my mind in the future, as I agree with your point, I just find it hard to bring myself to do it.

    • @mpatton997
      @mpatton997 5 лет назад +1

      I think it makes sense. Everyone taste are so different so giving someone thing a "bad" review is pretty damaging for something that's so personal. If they gave it to you for free and the down side is, it doesn't get mentioned, I think that's enough of a hit. I see where our friend is coming from for sure tho. I just side with you because of the nature of the bourbon beast. It's truly a to each their own kinda deal.

    If you're going to speak the history of it tell the whole truth. Uncle Nearest was a free slave and he invented Jack Daniels whiskey. He took this white teen under his arm and showed him the whiskey business. The white teen later grew up and became his partner and both decided it would be best to name it Jack Daniels. Uncle Nearest later became sick and died. But Daniels family never discreted Nearest for his invention and talked about him a lot. The story really never made headlines until a couple of years ago. Even Nearest family had no idea until recently and settled out of court for some millions. That's why I can't understand why Nearest whiskey is a small company since Jack Daniels is the most famous and sold whiskey in history.
    So basically Jack Daniels family should praise this Nearest guy like a god because if not for him they most likely wouldn't be the millionaires they are today. But I give props to them they kept the real story alive and the truth, and that's rare when it comes to white people. Imagine if other whites where as honest as them such as Alexander Gram Bell and others. LOL

    Love the story behind this one and Jack Daniels for that matter too! I am curious about the strength of this only being 100 proof for a barrel strength whiskey. Isn't it much more typical for whiskies to gain in proof as they age? I wonder why the difference with this one.

    How can uncle nearist be a bourbon when it's filtered through charcol doesn't that make it a straight whiskey.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 лет назад +1

      Funny you ask. I just finished recording a video about this very subject. Long story short, straight whiskey is a subset of bourbon.

    • @filthymcnasty5625
      @filthymcnasty5625 6 лет назад

      I get that, then why is the saying that all whiskys are not bourbon (for the one's outside of the usa) Question so would jd's be a bourbon. Be gentle sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 лет назад

      Whiskey > bourbon > straight bourbon > Tennessee whiskey

    Chello, please remember that your pallet is a very sensitive sense, what you had for food can change your taste buds greatly, try toasted bread or pretzels to clean your pallet first.

    I’m sorry sir but that’s not how whiskey or bourbon works. It doesn’t age or mellow in the bottle, even after it’s been opened. It isn’t wine. Maybe you ate something prior that left a bad taste in your mouth.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 лет назад +1

      100% the taste will change in the bottle after it's been opened. Maybe I said something unclear? (I'm ok a plane right now cant rewatch the episode).
