C/O Berlin Asks . William Eggleston . Mystery of the Ordinary

In seiner über fünf Jahrzehnte währenden Karriere hat William Eggleston die Farbfotografie fast im Alleingang als Kunstform etabliert. Neben Stephen Shore und Evelyn Hofer erkannte Eggleston früh die unverwechselbare Kraft der Farbe, ihre einzigartige bildschaffende Qualität zur kontinuierlichen Befragung der Alltagswelt. Eggleston sah die Schönheit und das Geheimnisvolle im Alltäglichen und verlieh seinen Bildern ein Element des Rätselhaften, das besonders durch die Wechselbeziehung der Farbe zur Wahrnehmung besticht.
Mit 'William Eggleston . Mystery of the Ordinary' präsentiert C/O Berlin vom 28. Januar bis 4. Mai 2023 eine große Retrospektive des US-amerikanischen Meisters der Farbfotografie. Neben berühmten Serien wie 'Los Alamos' zeigt die Ausstellung auch noch nie gezeigte Werke, darunter Bilder aus der Serie 'The Outlands' und Aufnahmen, die zwischen 1981 und 1988 in Berlin entstanden sind. Zur Ausstellung erschien eine Publikation im Steidl Verlag.

In a career spanning over five decades, William Eggleston has come to be recognized for almost single-handedly elevating color photography to the status of fine art. Along with Stephen Shore and Evelyn Hofer, Eggleston was one of the first photographers to recognize the distinctive power of color and its unique capacity to create pictures that continuously challenge the everyday. Eggleston recognized the beauty and mystery in the commonplace, and imbued his images with an element of mystery, made especially pronounced through color's unique relationship to perception.
C/O Berlin presents 'William Eggleston . Mystery of the Ordinary', a major retrospective on the American master of color photography, from January 28 to May 4, 2023. In addition to presenting famous series like Los Alamos, the exhibition also contains works that have never been seen before, including pictures from the series 'The Outlands' and images taken in Berlin between 1981 and 1988. A book accompanying the exhibition is published by Steidl.
