In this video Canadian guitarist composer Dean Wolfe reacts to a black metal band for the first time: Agalloch, and the song Falling Snow from: ashes against the grain album (2006).
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Ok dean, I know all these people are gonna suggest In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion, but honestly the song Our Fortress Is Burning (parts one and two) is miles above that song. I highly recommend you go listen to it.

man i wish this band was still around!....... this one has always been a favorite from them... they have many more masterpieces as well. The Mantle and Ashes Against the Grain albums are two awesome slabs of Proggy folky black metal.... rare that i connect with a band from the U.S. like this one, they sound more like they could have come from sweden or norway lol.
if you want to hear one of the most somber yet beautiful songs ever composed i recommend their song "and the Great Cold Death of the Earth"

This one sounds so much like Interpol from 2002.
Anyway, this is from the album that is greatly responsible for getting me into metal. Nowadays I love their black metal leanings even more - Into the Painted Gray is such a beautiful song.

love agalloch so much. all of their stuff is amazing, and i'm glad to have been able to see them live. definitely check out Hallways of Enchanted Ebony for a bit of a different vibe, or A Desolation Song for the most depressing song in the world.

3:10 your ears are starting to adapt to the screeches Dean! That's great. It's like an accent on it's own, with enough listening to black metal it'll become just like an understandable dialect jaja

This album almost has a post rock vibe to me. Their album after this, marrow of the spirit, is much more raw from a production standpoint and much more diverse in terms of instrumentation and variety ... Field recordings, violins, even parts that sound like drone/noise. Black lake nidstang or ghosts 8f the midwinter fires are great.

Agalloch are one of my favorite bands but I really think there are better songs to start from than Falling Snow. Not to say it's a bad song by any means but just saying "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" is on another level

@@justsomejusstsome8994 Yeah, Falling Snow is so poppy, something I wouldn’t say of Agalloch in general.

The songs are supposed to kinda drag. They arent an in your face brutal kinda band. Not for the impatient.

This is SO different to the next release (2008's The White), the only one I've heard. That one's a very folky celtic-sounding ambient post rock! I was sure the band was British just from listening to it! Now this 2006 song sounds just like an American black metal band. How is this even the same band? ruclips.net/video/bSjHaqSHPxY/видео.html
