Someone in my neighborhood had one when I was like, 8? 9?
Black with the gold pinstriping like that one.
Was the first car I could see over the top of.
Will always have a special place in my heart

50 years ago, in 1973 I drove a JPS Europa Special out from the Hethel factory. Still have it and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I was 21 then.

An excellent example of how a simulation can be so much better than the real thing.

Look how flat that is in the corners. I’ve had a 74 JPS and a 74 TC. Totaled the first one ( wet leaves in a sharp corner, don’t mix) sold the second one.

These were nice for their time, but only 'nice', but with a bit more development and power, could have been right up there with the best cars ever made.

That's scary as hell, especially in an old car / old suspension technology like that. It shows that Lotus had their shit together. Side hop a modern 3300 lb Porsche or 3600 lb BMW laterally across half the width of the track like that and see if the tires can absorb all that momentum. My guess is they would slide right off the track.
That perfectly demonstrates the advantage a 1550 lb car has over a 3500 lb car. And bear in mind the Lotus (and the driver) pulled it off with no ABS, traction control, torque vectoring, or active dampening. It's no software algorithms; just you, the car.

@@johncheves4740 The suspension layout on the Lotus Europa was way ahead of its time and for a mid engine car with gearbox at the back was as the F1 cars are now, although very much modernised materials not much has changed in suspension and steering design.

Lotus in the early days basically their main selling was the chassis, and driving experience.
It had Collin Chapman as a man behind it, one of the big shot technical / F1 mechanic guy at that time.
Handling are definitely one of the most mentioned in the yesteryears press and magazine's.

They had to pass all the crash tests before they could be sold and fiberglass is actually stronger than steel in absorbing impacts. The Europa also passed all the USA safety tests and emissions and sold the Federal Europa S2 (Lotus type 65) and later Twin cam versions in USA . They are also quite extensively raced, initially in UK in 1970's by a guy called Chris Meek if I remember correctly and also by Banks Racing who still make a newer version.

@@rogerwilson6367 I have owned mine since 1973 and managed to avoid accidents. I remember seeing Chris Meek racing them so they must have passed race scrutineers. They certainly passed crash test and US regulations. How many accidents did you have ?

      @@awalk5177 Two.
Once I was rear ended at about 15mph and the damage was pretty bad, although I was able to repair it with a new rear end section. Luckily there was no real chassis/gearbox damage due to the height of the offending vehicle.
The second time I was T boned at traffic lights (green for me). That wrote the car off and I'm glad there wasn't a passenger in my car. Probably 25 mph from memory.
Don't get me wrong, I love the cars and have even thought about buying one again, but I'm too frightened by the thought of an accident. I've always said that even today there are not many cars that could keep[ up with a well driven Europa on a twisty road.
