  • One of the lesser heard, but absolutely ethereal rendition by the Ustad. About 17 minutes of unadulterated bliss for the discerning listener. Among his very best.
Wishing him health, happiness and prosperity for all the joys he has given to his listeners. We are fortunate to have lived in his era.

    paara paara hua pairaahan-e-jaan
    phir mujhe chhod gaye chaaraagaraan
Fragment by fragment, tattered, frayed- the robe of my life,
And my refuge/guide has forsaken me, I’m left all alone
    1
koyi aahat, na ishaara, na sraab
    kaisa viraan hai ye, dasht-e-imkaan
Not a sound, neither any clue nor a lead,
How endless is it, this forest of desolation !
    2
    chaar-suu khaaq udaati hai hawa
    astaraan, kaabaataraan, reg-e-ravaan
The howling wind scatters dust in all four directions,
Lashing at the slithering sands from every nook and crany in its fury!!
    3
vaqt ke sog mein lamhon ka juluus
    jaise ik qaafilaa-e-nauhaa,garaan
In this time of mourning, endless moments in a funeral march
Like a caravan of weeping mourners marching silently!
    4
    Marg-e-umeed kay viraan shab-o-roz
    Mausam-e-dehar bahar aur na khizaan
All hope lost , despondency night and morn,
Seasons of earth: neither bright spring nor autumn all melancholy!
    5
    kaise ghabaraaye huye phirate hain
    tere mohataaj tere dil-zadagaan
How haunted, fearful and fretful, trudging along,
Dependent only on thee - the heart in misery!

The poet is Syed Razi Tirmizi. Ghulam Ali sang this Ghazal first in late 70's. I heard him sing this Ghazal in 1979 at a friend's home in Lahore. He was becoming popular at that time and had not yet forgotten his benefactor late Mr. Aijaz Khan who helped him get a chance in Radio Pakistan in early 70's. Unfortunately he stated that he does not remember anyone by that name when I met him in Atlanta few years ago. "Rang Dikhlata hey Aasman keyse keyse".

  • @RohanRajadhyaksha

Aptly described. In my view this is one of his best ghazals, but unfortunately has not gained the same popularity as his other ghazals. It might have to do possibly with the lyrics that do not sit easy on the tongue, and carrying the tune is no easy task. But as far as the emotive content of the music goes, it is up there with the best.

Beautifully put. Once something reaches beyond excellence, it no longer appeals to the masses.
This ghazal has made a 360 degree turn where it's now only celebrated by a selective audience possessing a keen ear and a deep love for good literature.

Delighted to listen to this magnificent treat in the soulful voice of Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab in somewhat different orientation for the very first time ! Infact, an another version of this ghazal is in my proud possession in the form of a LP album procured for my stereo record player long back ! This ghazal has been very close to my heart ever since I have listened to it for the very first time long back ! It has continued to be in my everyday menu till date and will remain so till I breathe ! What a beautiful composition it was ! How soulfully did Ustadjee perform it ! Here, in this ghazal, it was as if the beautiful lafz of the shayar had found life in the majestic voice of Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab with the exact feel, as depicted in the kalam, owing to his I style of gayiki ! After the sad demise of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, the mantle of carrying forward this Glorious Journey has fallen squarely on the safe shoulders of Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab ! Samarjif Acharjee deserves appreciation for his immaculate choice of uploads! --- Amarendra Borah, Former Commissioner and Secretary, Finance Department, Govt Of Assam (India).

A few people know that actually it is a ' na'at- e- Rasul Sa'alum ' written by Syed Razi Tirimzi , a well known poet and broadcaster of his time . His contamporary critic and broadcaster , Hameed Nasim discussed it under the tradition of Urdu na'at , in his collection of critical essays . Syed Razi chose the genere of ghazal for this na'at . Firstly this was recorded in the CPO , Radio Pakistan , Lahore Station . The present recording is of a live show where our music maestro unlike radio recording couldn't maintain his grip over the notes . There is considerable difference of quality of ' غزل گائیکی ' between radio station recording and live show . Overall , it is one of the best performances of Ghulam Ali .

Look at the great poetry in all couplets and how gently, accurately, soberly and beautifully GA has rendered each word with greatest skill, emphasizing the meaning and maintaining the spirit and mood of all syllables. Undoubtedly, Ustaad Mehdi Hassan is a classical maestro but i personally feel , it was Ustaad Ghulam Ali who bridged the classical genre of music and made it easier to reach the ordinary listeners. Ghulam ali sounded more exciting and vibrant . No disrespect to any one but to me Ghulam Ali has a greater contribution in serving Ghazals. and yeah this is my personal opinion.

Overlooking a few flows here and there in some of his 'masterpieces', G Ali is certainly great. His singing has reached hearts across the globe. G Ali is one of those Legends whose melodious voice will remain omnipresent through time. He is God's gift to ghazal lovers, now and always.

First stop overlooking your own flaws with your spellings, it's not 'flows' but 'flaws'. No need to thank me, It's alright!

@@samarjitmechie I would like to assume that you never make or oversee your mistakes. Moreover, auto type tends to be naughty occasionally. B well.

@@aabhah Well, making mistakes and being on your last legs to point out others' mistakes are polar different! Your comments could make one easily feel that you are the latter! And guess what, it feels great to give people the taste of their own medicine. Btw, I assume, you meant 'overlook' and not 'oversee'. Also, interestingly enough, it's still 'flow' up there. Anyway, just a little suggestion, instead of finding flaws in others, just enjoy the thing that you might not be able to do even in a million years! Hope it helps, Thanks!

Immortal masterpiece by d maestro. Excellent shayari excllnt music based on Raag Kirwaani and d words in themselves r musical. I can spend hours n hours listening to it.although it is melancholy. Than RUclips and than to Dhotimatics fr translating difficult Urdu words in poetic flow.---J.A.Pantsachiv.
