What a beautiful tutorial on making your own sketchbook. I am also a bookbinder and you have made this craft very accessible to many of us. Thank you for sharing your talent , your knowledge and your joy with us. Mercedes❤🎨📘
Actually I am really an art historian by trade, and then realised that my lovely art history books needed mending after I finished grad school. So I took up bookbinding and repair and it has served me well. Now I making my own little watercolour sketchbooks. You have inspired me.🎉
This was my first time making my own book. I found it difficult but managed to do it. I gessoed the front and back and did a watercolour painting on the front. Thank you.
This was so in-depth yet really straightforward, I also appreciate that you gave alternatives for tools that people may not have. All your books are gorgeous!
Thank you!! And yes, I think it’s important to know that you don’t need all of the special tools to make a book. They help, but it can be done without them. 😊
Stamp Pads can sometimes be revived with a little spritz of water and storing them upside down. To prevent mold I add a drop of tea tree oil or some other herbal essential oil to the spritz water. It's about tying out what this does to the inkpad - but I had good results so far. Beautiful patterns. I think I would have gone with these ones too. They are such classics that can be found in ancient buildings in greece or Italy 🙂
My first degree is in Classics (Greek art & archaeology) so it’s one of my favourite patterns. Thanks for the tips about reviving my ink pads. I’ll definitely give it a try! 😊
Fun fact: the tool shown at 1:39 is a bone folder. But the tool shown at 7:54 is a hera marker. The shape is different. Also, 1:29 a push pin is shown. A thumbtack has a flat (usually metal) head. 💕🌞🌵😷
I make monthly “booklets” for journaling. I like junk journals, but not all the extras, just the pages. And by making them monthly, I have a new booklet each month to keep my interest going.
Your videos really come at the perfect time for me. I've got loads of watercolour sheets now but I want to bind them to carry them around with ease and to also have a way to record all the paintings. I got a Chinese brand mini palette as well recently and will fill it up with watercolours soon. Thank you for inspiring and pushing me to paint even when I'm scared to :)
This is exactly what I do too. I’m endlessly annoyed by the limited offerings available commercially for the paper inside ready bound books so I had to learn to make them in self defence. I love to mix them together like you do here. So glad to see you passing this along.
I have made one of tiny palate and a tiny watercolour sketchbook by watching your video. Your video helped me a lot to make my own tiny watercolour travel set. Oh yeah... In my tiny watercolour set, there is a handmade view catcher too.😅. I've made all of these instruments with mdf board. Thank you very much....❤❤😊😊
I have made lots of books but never one like that so thanks for the new challenge! I will be making more than one I think because I'm going away travelling for four months and I hope to sketch every day.
What a moment thank you it's awsome 😁🥰 I've done a little note book as a birthday gift for my brother way more simple but it's true that hand made is heart made...😉 this one is beautiful yours prints and the ribbons are so cute and adorable 😚 and I'm happy to know that you crochet too 😄it's my favorite hobby with watercolor 🤷♀️😁😁 Thank you so much 🙏🏼 Bises 😉😘
Hi Leslie, I love your videos,as I love art teachers! Thankyou for sharing these great ideas, I tried this out with what I had, right now it's clamped. I don't have any bookmarks but I did find a little tin, perfect size for the little book I made (3x5, 3 signatures) it's nice to see an art teacher whenever I want! Thanks again. :)
I use a lot of ink pads! When I get them, I always get the matching re-inker liquid. Most scrapbook companies have their own versions. My favorites are probably Tim Holtz by Ranger. They are called Distress Inks. The pale brown (Linen color) is wonderful for "antiquing" edges.
Absolutely fascinating. You have put together a wonderful tutorial, explaining each step very clearly. Thank you for taking the time to video and edit your process.
Thank you for sharing your process with us - your a great teacher and its nice to watch your passion to inspire others. I learned a lot and it’s appreciated. I have a Sendak and would love to have my own hand crafted journal in it.
I do love this little watercolor sketchbook tutorial! I recently made a drawing paper single signature, 16 page sketchbook to fit in the back pocket of my Sendak to fill while traveling, but a watercolor one would be lovely for the other back pocket. I think my only issue with this binding method is you lose 2 perfectly good sheets of watercolor paper by gluing the cover down to them. 😢
Hi Leslie! Love this video and would want to try it. I also have the Peg and Awl Sendak - would like to ask the size of the book board / paper for this video?
Lovely. Enjoyed it. Im motivated to do book binding little bit. Btw is it that most artist has at least once in life time have done book binding? I've seen so many artist do it and enjoy.
Can I ask does it matter if you have an even amount of holes because when I tried, I had five holes and I would inevitably end up with my needle coming through the wrong side at the end of doing a page it would come out on the inside, instead of the outside
How do y'all make sketchbooks with a closed binding I've got some old sketchbook covers and wanted to make a closed binding sketchbook or is it better to make open binding this is my first attempt at making a sketchbook
I don't know why you tube punished me with stopping video while audio was fine... watched but was most difficult to watch as it didn't want to run right for me. Love the idea of making own sketch book.
Watching this was such a pleasure. Thank you. It seems to me that you should go to work for Louis Vuitton or Gucci, etc. what a joy watching this was. Could you do a video where you make a design on an eraser? ( I suppose the correct word is "carve.")
I think it’s actually easier to sew books with it. I’m not 100% sure. I found a curved needle and bought one, but haven’t used it yet. That is why I am not sure yet!

Wow, thanks! It’s nice to know this stood up to the scrutiny of a proper bookbinder. 😊 I have so much admiration for bookbinders. ❤

That’s a wonderful tradition! What type of binding do you use?
I had that cover to cover book....twice.
i got the second one thrifted and gave it to my niece
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
❤🎉
It was one of the first to show colourful, innovative photos and easy-to-follow tutorials. 😊
Yeah..I’ll be watching this one over and over! Thanks for editing that so beautifully Leslie. I’m going to give it a go! 🥁🥁🥁

Oh that’s terrific!! Yes, make those papers into little sketchbooks. They’re so fun and easy and you’ll cherish them. 😊
This is exactly what I do too. I’m endlessly annoyed by the limited offerings available commercially for the paper inside ready bound books so I had to learn to make them in self defence. I love to mix them together like you do here. So glad to see you passing this along.
I love making books..I usually use my home made paste paper but i LOVE the idea of the stamps& how you create your own designs!

That’s wonderful!! Maybe it’s time to add a hardcover sketchbook? 😊
@@LeslieStroz yeah, obviously 😅

Great Tutorial!!! Thank you for teaching this! 👍🏾🥰🔥

@@LeslieStroz wow I 've seen videos about it's very interesting too 😁😁😁😉 👍
I have stitched books and covers, but haven’t tried the cloth strips and gluing the cover. Next project! Thank you for posting
It was my first time using them too. It was much more fun! 😊

Total rainy day vibes here in England this month! 😅

I really enjoy your choice of music.
Thank you, Leslie! I do have all the right materials!! I can't wait to start making it. 🎉
Wonderful! I hope you have fun! 😊
I can’t wait to make a bunch of them!!
THANKYOU
Absolutely fascinating. You have put together a wonderful tutorial, explaining each step very clearly. Thank you for taking the time to video and edit your process.
I’m glad it was helpful! 😊
I made my own sketchbook following the video! Loving it!!❤ thanks much for sharing Leslie ❤❤
Oh wow! That’s terrific!! Would love to see it. 😊

I hope you make your own. It’s so nice to choose your own paper, etc. 😊
I have said “Wow” a lot of times along your video, it’s impressive and absolutely beautiful! Thank you Leslie! 👌🏻🥰🪶
Wow! Can't wait to make one! Do you have a tutorial on the rubber stamps? I'd love that! And I'll have all the tools to make my own journal.
I don’t have one, but you’re the second to ask, so I’ll put it on my ideas list. 😊
These are always so fascinating, I love them ☺☺☺
Thanks. This version is a lot of fun to make and the easiest Western Codex type binding I’ve come across yet.
Im just making it and i alrwedy know it will be amazing!!! i love your channel!!!
Beautiful,,,I was so surprised when you started stamping the covers I thought that it was paper..
Bravo !
Excellente vidéo interessante et talentueuse. Merci

Really nice tutorial. I make books as well. Would love to see a tutorial of how you make your eraser stamps. So interesting.
It’s been ages since I made some, but maybe it’s time I added to my collection. 😊
I am mesmerized watching this. I can’t wait to make a sketchbook of my own. OK then, it’s time to buy some tools :).
Yes!! I hope you enjoy the process. 😊
i just found you today i subbed right away,i love making books but need to try your way ,thank you
Hi Leslie! Love this video and would want to try it. I also have the Peg and Awl Sendak - would like to ask the size of the book board / paper for this video?
With the accordion book, you could paint the Bayeux Tapestry.😅
Thanks for making this video, how basic it. Somethink i need to know, from the esensial. Thank you very much. 🎉🎉🎉❤
Wonderful tutorial! And the music is gorgeous! Would you cite the title and composer?!
You made me fall in love ❤️
Awww 😊
What is that bag you use at the end? Love it
It’s called the Sendak art wrap and is made by Peg and Awl. 😊
It's so pretty! Tsym!!
Thank you! Great video!
Wonderful. Thank you 🥰
You’re welcome! ☺️
Lovely. Enjoyed it. Im motivated to do book binding little bit. Btw is it that most artist has at least once in life time have done book binding? I've seen so many artist do it and enjoy.
I think many artists have specific desires from their paper, etc, and naturally gravitate towards making their own sketchbooks. 😊
I’m a beginner so this is very helpful
What will be the final measurement of the book? I’m enjoying this😊!
It’s 10.5cm x 15cm 😊
Can I ask does it matter if you have an even amount of holes because when I tried, I had five holes and I would inevitably end up with my needle coming through the wrong side at the end of doing a page it would come out on the inside, instead of the outside
Omg thanks :)
My pleasure! 😊

Oh no! The audio was bad? It seems fine on my end. I’m sorry YT failed you. 😢
It worked fine for me as well.
I'm so impressed with your talents. Is there anything you don't do?📚
I’m not sure I heard a measurement but I’d like to do the same for my Sendek. Did anyone get measurements?
Watching this was such a pleasure. Thank you. It seems to me that you should go to work for Louis Vuitton or Gucci, etc. what a joy watching this was. Could you do a video where you make a design on an eraser? ( I suppose the correct word is "carve.")
why are you using a curved needle?
I think it’s actually easier to sew books with it. I’m not 100% sure. I found a curved needle and bought one, but haven’t used it yet. That is why I am not sure yet!
