I have watched this a few times in the past two weeks. I am still so in love with THIS tutorial!!! I promise myself I will create one. ☝️ I will!!!!. Love this tutorial so much
Hello Mike, I’m at just past the 10:15 mark and I recommend placing a piece of wax or parchment paper onto the glued pages and then some heavy books for as long as you’re able (the longer the better). That will help prevent air pockets and warping. 😊
I can't wait to try this! For another project, I glued two cereal boxes together. It turned out great. I live in the middle of nowhere so getting supplies is challenging. My sister with five kids was more than happy to save cereal boxes. I don't eat cereal.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for sharing your interesting tutorial, I have seen this version by another person, in a different way, I have created a photo album with this method, thank you very much again for demonstrating this booklet, it just shows you do not need to buy when you can make, god bless you, take care for now, love your tutorials.
I'm making a custom box (for my custom blu-ray cases) of a tv show and wanted to make an episodic guide for it. I tried photobook sites but they were so expensive and not at all customisable for the size (especially considering I wanted landscape). This video seems perfect for me. My pages are 17cm long (meaning I can't use A4 to do a 2 page fold) so I can buy some cheap A3 card (and use that for the folding page) then use adhesive photo paper and stick that onto the inner sides of the A3 card (I can even make the photo paper sections slightly bigger and fold it over each edge so I don't have to bother with painting the edge of the book as it'll already be coloured and it'll be hidden when sticking the pages together). Thanks for this as it makes the job way simpler.
This is amazing! One of the best videos I have seen for binding a journal! I would like to see this with a bigger book or thicker book that requires more signatures.
As the end of the video approached I thought, boy, I'd like to buy that journal. Then I thought, I'll bet he's going to give it to Linda. HA! I was right! I love this little journal. You must have been a book binder in a previous life. You have mad skills!
What a nice lil journal for a quick project. Sometimes the large journals can be scary to start art Journaling for beginners. This is something more manageable to finish.
I've been looking for a good flat binding for a university project which I've been stressing about for ages but this tutorial has helped me tremendously, thanks so much!! really saved me :)
Awesome! I never thought to glue blank cards together to make a lie flat journal! That is so simple and genius!! Thank you for sharing!! Im amazed! Will definitely try!❤
Oh'magosh Mike you are a great teacher... I made my first, yes first must make more of these books. Geezz I'm nearly gushing over this book. I made my first one following your video last night and it turned out SO good. You are so clear with your instructions, thank you my poor A.D.D. brain has a hard time sometimes following instructions and yours did the trick for me. This new Journal will be so great for my projects and even Pen Pal gifts.
Great instruction Mike... and a beautiful result. Thank you so much for sharing. Please stay safe and say Hi to Ian and Mr. Bentley, Mum and Dad for me.
Just found your wonderful video. It was the best guided tour with such precision. I will revisit and begin my journal with joy 😊Thank you from Denmark 🇩🇰 .
Sir, your video fell into my feed and i decided to take a look. I am hooked! I'm now going through all of your videos and vlogs. I'm late to the party, but I'm catching up and subscribed. Your teaching skills and calm demeanor are enticing. Thank you.
Thankyou for such a clear and straightforward presentation. After searching for a while I'm pleased I've found your tutorial. Many thanks to you and please keep up the good work it is appreciated.
Brilliant! Wish I had seen something like this a few weeks ago.Would of saved me a lot of hand stitching 😊...nice idea for small gift for some of my crafting friends 😁.
Just what I was searching for! I'm making a series of family portrait art quilts and I wanted to showcase them in a book to give to family members so that I can hang on to my quilts. hahahaha Anyway I want a coffee table book feel but with open, flat pages to better study the photos. I could incorporate a different scrap of quilt fabric on the spine of each book!
I had to come on here to tell you I made one of these journals today. It worked so well. It opens flat no matter where I open it. I used watercolor papers for the pages. I just kept forgetting to put the fabric on the spine. I didnt have your channel on when I made which is a huge mistake and I went from memory. After watching it 5 times I thought I had it under control. But I did get it made and it looks fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic way to make a flat journal. It really is superb
That was fantstic! Great idea for stocking stuffers....planning ahead. You made me wamt to shout...who cares about dinner I have to make this! All you have to do now is get Mr, B. to walk by you guys and approve the work when you are making these brilliant videos! I am so happy I found your site!
Oh I do need some of that sticky paper or tape. whatever it is. Lovely book. So easy to do. I'm just so excited to create more books this way. I love it. Cant wait to get started. I just forgot to ask if this can be used on a larger journal or if it's better for smaller journals....the flat spine method?
Thank you so much for the instructions. You did an excellent job of teaching us and this old teacher appreciates it very much. I’m off to give it a try. We’ll see what kind of student I am!
thank you for making this video i have been searching for a way to make sure i actually have signatures that open up to complete 2 sided signatures so i can use both sides at once after 50 videos i found yours yayyy
Perfect. I believe this will be so much easier for me. The books look so much better when you use your method here letting them lay flat🤗🤗🤗 Appreciate the sharing🥰
Very nice! I wonder if there's a way to incorporate this lay flat with regular mini albums, you know larger, with pockets and flaps etc. Hmm, I'll have to experiment!
Great instructions! I will use this technique on the Chinoiserie themed journal I have planned. Having it lay flat makes writing in it far easier. Thank you!
Great tutorial and easy to understand instructions. I just a watercolor journal using a mermaid napkin from the front and back covers. Definitely will be referring to this video when I make another no sew journal like this again. 😊
Gorgeous little journal, well explained, step by step process. I like this method for making small notebooks as gifts. My sister likes to have several, be it for planning the garden, a decorating project or a holiday, back in the day when they could get away. They are perfect for sketched ideas, plant lists, holiday essentials etc, so even if you aren't into art journaling, these are fun to make & more personal to give than shop bought. Especially if you can tailor the covers to suit the recipient. 😊❤🇬🇧
I am a new Subbie, your tutorial was very informative, as I have been trying all book making I can get my hands on. I am making Birthday gifts for Family and Friends this year. Thank You so much for making your videos, I will search for more. 😊🙏
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I have been having so much fun making these and am a bit addicted :) I am working on making some into gratitude journals to give as gifts. Such a great tutorial I appreciate you sharing
What a wonderful video. You do such a great job of explaining step by step and you are so neat and precise. I can't wait to try this. Thank you for taking time to share your technique.
Mike - This is such a marvelous video! I love the design of this journal - the binding and end papers, the textblock - everything about it is beautiful and elegant . And your instructions are excellent. Thank you so much!
Mike, I first watched this video with such enjoyment two years ago as you made this delightful little book. I was a newbie to art, journaling, and the like. Now, I realize what a simple, yet classic, technique this is! I am SO grateful to have discovered you! Thank you and Ian for continuing to be amazing inspirations to me as I grow in my experience with art & journaling. From Cheryl in AZ.
Thanks so much for this, Mike. I was lucky enough to win a bundle of adhesive products and there were sheets of double sided amongst them...now I know what to use them on :)
Another beautiful project, Mike. Would be easy to add lines to the inside pages for poems, quotes, or brief journeling. And the Tim Holtz fabric makes for a lovely spine cover. Can't wait to try to make one of these. TFS. From Cheryl in AZ
Watching 4 years later. A game changer for me. Thank you!!
Glad it helped!
Me too, thanks!

This is amazing! One of the best videos I have seen for binding a journal! I would like to see this with a bigger book or thicker book that requires more signatures.
I had the same thought, and I don't see why it wouldn't work with any number of pages.
As the end of the video approached I thought, boy, I'd like to buy that journal. Then I thought, I'll bet he's going to give it to Linda. HA! I was right! I love this little journal. You must have been a book binder in a previous life. You have mad skills!
