Disclaimer: this video completely fails at explaining where the term “Black Friday” comes from - although there is violence that occurs, the “black” part of Black Friday comes from a business term that compares to being “in the red” vs. “went into black”. It’s just comparing net profit vs. net loss in revenue.
It also gets the garbage disposal thing wrong. It's not banned anywhere. This video is dumb as hell. The garbage dispose isn't mixed in with the general water.. how does this stupid video think toilets work?
The earliest records of usage of the term Black Friday in connection with the day after thanksgiving were by police in Philadelphia in the 1950s complaining about the heavy crowds which required extra work in doing crowd control. It wasn’t until later that the businesses decided to try to flip the term into something positive instead of negative and invented the explanation that it referred to “in the black” vs “in the red” and then after that usage gained popularity it then spread nationwide. So while in many regions the initial usage of the term was the economic reference, the original connection to the day does in fact refer to the unruly crowds.

And probably only exist at all due to, "soda fountains". Seems like most of the rest of the world does not use syrup bottles, tanks of co2 and mix it "as needed" - they are more likely to have a refrigerator with cans of soda. Those cans cost maybe a $1 each, not including markup from both the manufacturer and business. The, "make as needed", version from syrup probably costs pennies a glass, over all. If it costs you almost nothing more than refilling a glass with water from the tap to refill a soft drink, there is no real point in charging for it - especially if, at most, half of your customers won't drink more than the single glass anyway, and almost none of them will ask for a third, never mind 4th.

@neutrino78x Sigh.. mistakenly thought this thread was on a different subject. Not at all sure what point you where making in the actually context of the thread. Fast food chains often have different rules than main stream restaurants, so I have literally no idea if they do or don't charge for refills in other countries, some of them, none of them, etc. In context, what fast food franchises do compared to literally *every other traditional place* is... not necessarily relevant to whether or not the overall perception is thst you can only expect refills in the US. Sorry about the confusion.
It's worth pointing out that we don't use red Solo cups just for beer. People like to have picnics and barbeques away from home, or maybe barbeque in their backyard and have people over. It's much more convenient to have plastic cups and paper plates for this purpose, rather than drag around glasses and dishes, or wash a bunch of dishes. Just pointing that out since the video said everyone else just uses glasses and mugs.
I would also add though that the American “iconography” around solo cups these type videos always mention is almost exclusively a college party thing. Not only would it be very weird to go to a party and not see solos, I went on more than one “cup run” to the store in college specifically to get only cups. You’re right we obviously use them for way more than just beer pong, but not nearly to the degree that I think these videos think they get used if that makes sense lol
True. Solos or equivalent are mostly for events where there's more people than you have glassware, and you don't want to risk having it broken anyways. Just you and friends it's the regular glassware of the house being used. If it's something where friends can invite their family and friends over too, then you get the stacks of disposable cups.
I keep solos at the house. When a guest or service person comes in I offer them a drink of water or soda. So when they leave they can take their drink with them.
When we have a large family gathering like at holidays, we use Solo cups and there's always a sharpie so you can "name your cup". The smart alecks in the crowd take that literally rather than writing their own name on the cup.
To explain the flag sales count. We put small ones on every fallen soldier’s grave on Memorial Day and other holidays. Not including all the buildings and homes that have them.
Some federal buildings even put out tiny flags covering the ground for fallen soldiers. Plus, in the video the flag was drawn wrong on the school house. We even have Flag day June 14th. Plus if flags get soiled, washed out or touches the ground, you are to place a new up. Back when I was a child my grandfather who fought in WWII would go out every morning and put the flag up, before sunset he would take it down. He taught my brother and I in how to properly fold the flag. He even flew it half staffed when the country was mourning. I remember when the Oklahoma bombing happened he flew the flag at half staffed.
I would say, memorial day, 4th of july, and presidents day is likely where alot of the american flag sales come from, i dont think alot of other countries have multiple holidays celebrating their country like the usa does. I could be wrong tho.

To clarify, garbage disposals are environmentally friendly; however, they would not be environmentally friendly in Europe. Although garbage disposals are not authorized by the European Union, countries in Europe may authorize their use. The reason why the use of garbage disposals is not common in Europe is because they want to reduce the number of sewer blockages. Much of Europe has older plumbing which uses smaller piping and is unable to carry the extra load of kitchen waste. Sewage treatment plants in the United States are more modern and can process organic solids into fertilizer and some have the capability of capturing methane gas for energy production.
Something to add is that garbage disposals are not recommended for use in homes with a septic system. You don't want to be filling your septic tank up with food waste, causing it to need to be pumped out twice as often. My house has septic, and I'll never install a garbage disposal. Things that people typically put down the disposal go in our compost pile instead.

@@mosesruiz9813 99% of trash in Sweden is recycled or used for energy production. They import trash to burn cleanly. The US is far behind in waste management disposal and again, garbage disposals aren't good hence no one else in the world has adopted this practice.
@@themourningstar338 Actually they are ok to use with a septic tank. We have a septic tank and a garbage disposal. I don’t put food in the disposal and grind it up, but what little scraps are left in my sink I was down the disposal. I have not pumped my tank in over 18 years. I have no issues with my tank. I do add monthly maintenance packets to my tank.
Our national anthem is about our flag lasting through the night while fighting the British. It's a representation of hope, sacrifice, honor, and freedom. We don't have a designated national figure such as a monarch to represent our country. It's probably why we value our flag so much....it's a representation of all Americans have fought and sacrificed for over the years. Just an opinion from a southern American.

As an American who just got back from a few weeks in the UK, I can appreciate this video. I didn't realize that garbage disposals were primarily American. And I love our large clothes washers and dryers.
A lot of these come down to convenience. Solo cups (and disposable dishes in general) are way more convenient than washing a bunch of dishes for big gatherings.
Spray cheese exists but most Americans don’t buy it. Foreigners make a big deal about it. People may buy it for a child’s birthday party but most of our cheese is the sane as anywhere else.
Probably half the cans sold are bought solely for the purpose of tricking dogs into eating their medication lol. If hiding the pill in a meat ball made out of dog food doesn't work, hiding it in a blob of spray cheese usually will 😂
In these videos made outside the US they frequently show a traditional paint spray can as the can for spray cheese. It does not spray out like paint or deodorant. It squirts out relatively slowly so you can put it on crackers.
Don't fall into the same trap as that channel and start presenting your own preferences as "facts." Lots of people buy Easy Cheese and the like. Like many millions of people. Nobody presents it as gourmet cuisine or part of a healthy diet, but no doubt _most_ people don't eat it every day.
What non-Americans might not know is that those are measurement markings on a Red Solo cup: the bottom line is a 1 ounce measurement, the next up is a 5 ounce measurement, and the third from the bottom is a 12 ounce measurement (30ml, 150ml, 360ml)
Spray cheese is something I’d categorize as cheap junk food snack. Nobody would actually consider it quality food, but more along the lines of something like cheetos/wotsits.
I keep hearing about spray cheese in videos like this, but I have never seen any since I was a child (decades ago). If they are in stores I go to, I somehow have never noticed them on the shelves.

You could think of it like a soft cheese log, which would be served with crackers, etc., but with a bloody long shelf life. It's a bit weird, but in some contexts it's more convenient.
Not every restaurant offers free refills on beverages, and never for wine beer or alcohol. some fast food restaurants offer refills of soda, and diners will usually offer refills of regular coffee as well as soda or iced tea. Don't expect a fine dining establishment to offer refills, except sometimes for bread baskets. Tipping is also expected except for self serve fast food.
They weren’t created for alcohol, they were created as a picnic cup, disposable. Just because they’ve become synonymous with drinking doesn’t mean the lines were made for measuring alcohol, they have been adapted to be used that way. There’s a big difference between “created for” and “adapted for.”
The drain pipe from the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink goes to the same pipe as the toilet. That pipe goes to the waste treatment plant. If putting scraps in the disposal isn't environmentally friendly, then taking a dump in the toilet isn't either.
To me the biggest concern would seem to be fats and oils. Those tend to congeal at slow points in the flow, especially if there are strands of stuff - mostly hair - to catch on sharp edges. Fairly regularly a team has to go in and blast those to pieces with a water jet. Not a job for the faint of heart. Fats and hair are also big problems for septic tanks.
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 Just like with a normal sink or drain you don't put fats and oils down the disposal either. It's primarily used for food scraps like peals or egg shells. Putting leftover scraps down it can be done meaning you could get some meat scraps that might have some fat on them but I don't think there would be enough for it to cause a clogging problem. You typically run the water when you put stuff in the disposal to wash the solids down the drain since the disposal just chops the stuff up into smaller pieces.
As a kid, I loved eating spray cheese on crackers. The bonus was the fun of making cool designs on the crackers. The tip of the can looked like a cake decorating tip, so could get fancy with decorating. It was art, entertainment and tasty snack all together. Haven't had any in years, but now I'm craving some.
I loved it as a kid too. I used to squirt it right into my mouth. I tried some again recently and it was disgusting. Maybe they changed the formula, but I suspect my palate has just improved, lol.
I'm American, but I noticed when I visited France that when I ordered a coke at a restaurant it came in a glass bottle and you poured it over the ice yourself. Obviously, you had to pay for a new bottle if you wanted another drink. This is very different from the restaurants in America, which usually have a soda fountain that mixes the seltzer with the flavor syrup as it comes out of the machine. No bottles are involved. I don't know about other countries than that, but I'm sure that the soda fountain cuts down on bottling costs and may contribute to why you don't usually have to pay for refills in the US.
A lot of European countries have a deposit system for bottles. So if you return your bottles, you get the money back. I wouldn’t be surprised if restaurants make a little profit serving bottles instead.

I always find it funny that these videos talk about college sports, but they never seem to mention U.S. high school sports. In a lot of towns, high-school football and/or basketball games are a packed public event!

One reason SOLO cups gained popularity is bar tenders at event locations could get accurate pours for liquor (1oz), wine (5oz), short beers (12oz) and pints (16oz) using the lines on the cup. Treated as disposable, there was no need to collect and wash glassware and eliminated potential missiles (full bottles and cans) at events where alcohol was sold. Business thought they were great and eventually everyone else did too.
Well, it does have a propellant, so the toothpaste analogy is a bit off... It's more like a shaving cream can or those foam hand sanitizer dispensers, where it works better if you hold the nozzle downwards... The cheese is basically "American Cheese," which is a highly-processed blend of cheese and stuff, designed to have a much longer shelf-life. In MREs (Military Rations), it comes in squeeze packets, too...
My grandmother said that the whole white teeth obsession didn't exist before the Great Depression. That plus the growth of commercial toothpaste combined to make white teeth so desirable. It was a status/ class thing.

The “Big House” (Michigan’s Football Stadium) is absolutely massive. I went to a game there when they played my husband’s Alma mater, Penn State. They packed you in so tightly that you can’t even stand straight, you have to sort of stand sideways. And you definitely can’t sit down. I am glad I went just to see it, but it gave me a panic attack and we had to leave. Thankfully, my husband is very kind and supportive of me and my mental health.

A big reason why so many flags are sold every year in the US is because it can be seen as disrespectful to fly a flag that’s too faded or torn so a lot of times, at least to my family by the end of the year the flags we fly are usually no good so we put them to rest by disposing of them properly, and then get a new flag to fly
It's ironic that Brits especially express surprise at all the flags. We'll never have enough flags to match the number of images of the king that they have. His likeness is on every piece of money and every postage stamp. Whenever there's a special occasion, thousands of souvenir items with his picture will be sold. His portrait also hangs on the walls of every public building.

My college is Auburn University. I love my college football. 🏈 Our stadium holds about 90 thousand people. Teeth yeah I had braces. My teeth are awful now. I’m 57. I never go shopping on black Friday. Solo cups are everywhere. A diner will usually refill coffee for about an hour. Then I think they’d make u order something else. We love Old Glory.

Here on RUclips you can watch foreigners visiting American supermarkets for the first time and expressing amazement at all the choices Americans have.

The water we get in restaurants is also typically tap water, whereas in most of Europe it's bottled. That's likely the difference. Better restaurants in the US have filtration systems for their drinking water, but in the lower-end places it's straight out of the tap.
As a Scot, all you needed to do is ask for a glass of tap water. Of course they will charge for bottled water that they have to buy in themselves but you'll always get tap water free.

@Omizuke I've worked in many restaurants, and the water is dispensed through a filtrated system on the drink machine. It's still city water, yes, but it is filtered and not straight from the tap.
About spray cheese....I guess it's an acquired taste, for most. Like many things of my 1970's youth, this was a brand new, revolutionary item. As such, it was expensive and (we) used it for special occasions, New Year's, in particular. Today, I use it when I get nostalgic during the winter, as a morale booster for my seasonal depression. The memories it brings back helps me purge my emotions over the course of a few days. So, yeah. I guess it's rather an important "Gen X" thing. Funny enough, I happen to work as a night stock person (yeah, say "night stocker" and see whut looks ya get, mate!) at that store on the label. The garbage disposal is actually trademarked as "Dispose-All", as in "Dispose All extras down the sink). Dishwashers are also fitted with the same type of grinder, to prevent pipe clogging. If you're smart, you'll use citric acid (just add a bottle of lemon juice or white vinegar or pay out the nose for a powdered version) every couple of months, the break up the grease and help release the small food particles. And regularly clean your dish washer's filter(s)!
For the free refills thing, it's usually for fountain drinks (coke sprite, etc. Sometimes tea, at least in the south) But sometimes special drinks won't have free refills. Like Mango tea, hot chocolate or something. As far as I'm aware it will list it on the menu at a restaurant, but you can always ask if a drink has free refills or not before you order it for the first time.
We use red solo cups because we throw larger parties here. Yes we drink from beer cans and beer bottles too, we don’t just pour bottles into these cups, these cups are mainly used for drinking from beer kegs (58L). This was started from house parties and Frat parties or beer busts. With that being said we usually have at least 20 guests at small get togethers, do you have 30 pint glasses in your home? I don’t. Plus there’s washing and breakage. Also if you can buy 240 cups for $18.00, you’d buy them and use them whenever to have s get together too. Whether it’s for water (from the fridge), soda (from a 2 liter bottle) or a mixed drink. So that’s our obsession with the solo cup, cheap, plentiful readily available for large parties. Example: our 4th of July party (2023) we had 100+ guests between two houses this year
Yep. The literal only time I know of that my family *ever* had them was in cases like a party, a picnic, where you might not want you good cups with you, or probably most common for me either company picnics and/or from food carts/booths, etc. at a fairer ground. Theme parks generally have something they is identical, but with art and design that matches the theme (and usually a bit different, longer lasting, plastic). Otherwise... I can't think of a single instance in which I have personally ever bought any.
It is a brand of cheap plastic disposable cup. There are other brands and a wide variety of color options available. Alternatives include styrofoam cups and paper cups. Dixie cups at least used to be the best known brand of paper cup. Most common use is probably for fast food or restaurant takeout. I think I’ve seen the red cups the most at fairs and theme parks, so it makes sense that this might seem like a bigger thing to tourists than it does to us. Big chain fast food places usually use branded paper cups. Restaurants that use washable drink ware for dine-in I usually see using a clear disposable cup or styrofoam cup for takeout. I don’t attend enough sporting events or concerts to have an impression of what may be typical from those concession stands, but I would not be surprised if it was the red Solo cup.
Agreed, when we have just immediate family get togethers we have 26 people including the kids. If we have all the family members including grandparents aunts uncles cousins we have around 110 people! Solo cups are necessary we put them out with sharpie pens so everyone puts their name on them to keep them straight 😂😂😂

Calling it "spray cheese" is a bit of a misnomer because it doesn't really spray. It's basically just cheese dip in a pressurized can that comes out slow and thick, kind of like neosporin or something. The only time I ever used to buy it was when I was younger and would go on multi-day backpacking/camping trips. It's calorie-dense and doesn't need refrigeration even AFTER you open it. So it's pretty good for that kind of thing. (Dehydrated foods were hard to find and very expensive back then.) Garbage disposals are uncommon, and virtually every plumber shudders when you mention them because toilets notwithstanding, household plumbing is not intended for solid waste. But what they basically are is a blender in your drain. You dump non-animal food waste in there, run the water, turn the switch on, and it just sort of mulches it all into slop and rinses it down the drain. You're not supposed to do meats or fats though, because those will stick to the pipes, restrict flow, and eventually block it entirely. Plus since fat floats on water you might not rinse it all down successfully, resulting in rotting stuff stuck in the drain, stinkin up the kitchen.
Define "uncommon". More than 50% of homes in USA have them. I've lived in several regions of the U.S. and have seen them everywhere. I have noticed they are not as common in rentals.

I've lived in over ten homes in my life only one had a disposal, it was a rental. I haven't been in many homes that had them either. But I mostly visit in areas with septic systems which are a no no for disposals.
The video you’re reacting to got the reason for black Friday’s name completely wrong. The name comes from accounting practices. For a lot of retain companies, they are financially “in the red” (not making a yearly profit) until the Christmas season, which starts on “Black Friday”. The transition from “losing money” to “making a profit” is called going “black” on the financial ledger. Hence, the date that marks this transition from loss to profit is called “Black Friday”
This is a myth. The idea that ANY retail companies operate at a loss 11 months out of the year is absurd. If the Christmas season is the only time you make a profit, either you are a Christmas-exclusive business or you are doing it wrong.
Medical ads haven’t always been common here. I remember thinking they were weird when they started and still do because sometimes they are vague about what the medicine is for and you have to call for more information. It’s basically a way from pharmaceutical companies to try to get around the physicians and encourage the patients to pressure their doctors to prescribe it to them.
Many are ambulance chasers. Ever notice when you get a ticket all of a sudden you get all these ads in your mailbox from schools to get points taken off and some are from lawyers 😂
The medicine ads started when some court case threw out the laws prohibiting them because of first amendment concerns (aka free speech). But yes, functionally, they are a way to do an end run around the "gatekeeping" doctors.
Honestly, as someone who lives in a rural area with a dangerously scary phobia of needles and many medicine based allergies with doctors who are...not great...knowing all the meds available for my condition is vital sometimes.

While that is a decent point, you can’t get a refill if you order to go, for delivery through DoorDash or Uber eats or, when you order through the drive-thru right? i dont know any humans that like spray cheese but if you need a high value treat to train a super stubborn dog that is the one thing i would suggest trying. a tiny bit of spray cheese to a dog is like a full size candybar for a small child.
American here and I can confirm that canned (spray) cheese isn't usually bought much. It's more of a novelty or joke item and tends to taste nasty in my opinion. Some people do get it and it has uses but it's seen as a low teir condiment. The most memorable thing about it is the very unique sound it makes coming out of the can lol

I'm 60 years old. And 30 years ago there were a lot of places where you did have to pay for your refills in America, especially fast food. But a lot has changed in the last 15 years
I'm 52 and American and I have never been asked to pay for a drink refill of soft drink or iced tea in my life, or seen anyone else charged for them. Maybe it's regional?
How about yellow school buses, peanut butter, self-serve soda dispensers at fast food restaurants, cheerleaders/cheerleading, gender reveal parties, roadside mailboxes for individual houses, Girl Scout cookies and (of course...) gun shows!

Sorry mate, not quite. Individual roadside letterboxes have always been the norm in Australia, peanut butter is a common staple, and unfortunately gender reveal events are also common.
About the large number of USA flags sold each year, remember many flags are planted on the graves of military veterans each Memorial Day, Veterans Day and July 4th. It doesn't matter if the person was buried the day prior or in 1775. Plus, a relative of a deceased veteran is presented the folded flag used to honor the veteran during the ceremony. Further, many military units will present a vet a flag clown at their last base of unit when three vet is retires from the military. So even before discussing flags in parade, town at government buildings, etc, there's a lot of other flags used to honor veterans, alive and dead.
Exactly. Plus, the flag code requires us to replace a tattered flag. I have the scouts respectfully retire my worn-out flags and get new ones pretty frequently.

When my sister and I visited the UK, they had spray cheese in the “American Foods” section of a few grocery stores. It was probably 3x what it costs here. No wonder my aunt who lives in Scotland had us bring her a whole suitcase full of stuff that was hard to find there.
1) Lawyer/Medical Ads: It's because they feel the need to "sell" us on it. I think most people ignore them. 2) Spray Cheese: It can be convenient, but most people prefer the real deal. 3) Garbage Disposal: They're supposed to be good for creating mulch for plants and stuff, I think. I guess in cities, it gets mixed in with general water stuff, but the ones I've seen had it so it went into a separate bin. 4) College Sports: I don't really get it either. I guess, kind of like you support the team from your state. 5) White Teeth: I know lots of people from outside the US with white teeth? 6) Black Friday: I don't do Black Friday, but they do go kind of crazy. 7) Solo Cup: I'm pretty sure they have those elsewhere too. They're typically not used at bars though, just at parties for the ease of cleanup after. 8) Free Refills: I mean, if we're paying that kind of money, it BETTER be with refills. My minimum is 2 refills. I need my coffee. 9) Flags: Well, we're proud to be American.
Driving into Philly the highway is lined with billboards for lawyers too! The only college sport I ever recall seeing on TV in the UK was the Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race! It is televised every year. Great fun as sometimes one of the boats might sink (if you're lucky).
The cheese is actually derived from squeeze cheese from the 80s. It's part of car culture. It started as an easy snack on road trips where mom would squeeze cheese onto crackers and pass them around. It pairs well with a slice of carl budding lunch meat. It used to come in a clear tube you had to squeeze, then later came in pressurized cans. Its brilliant, I dont care what foreigners think of it.
@bigdog8008 you're probably correct, and squeeze cheese was a more popular product. I don't recall seeing canned cheese on the shelves until the 90s. That doesn't mean it didn't exist.
Back in the 80s when I went to London. My very first morning having breakfast. I had toast jelly and 4 cups of coffee. And it was like 13 bucks because the coffee was a $1.80 a cup with no refills in the states. It was 50 cents a cup with unlimited refills. We couldn't believe that.
Garbage disposals are banned in a lot of European countries because their sewer systems are too old and delicate for the amount of solid waste…this is why they are also banned in NYC.

That's a flashback. I was a paramedic in Sacramento in the mid 80's. When we had minor fender benders like backing into a car in the parking lot with the occupant groaning holding their neck we just called it another Jacoby and Meyers.

They are used for food waste, it's to keep the kitchen from smelling like rotting food from the garbage can. Also, it's not environmentally unsafe, other countries are ignorant and don't understand the minerals and vitamins that are going back into the water at the water treatment plant. Some kitchens have composters, to be used as fertilizer for gardens. The strainer you mentioned is to catch food particles, this can also be used on the disposal side of the sink. Either way, the disposal is for ALL food scraps.

Free Refills: The US has literally megatons of fresh water in lakes, rivers, etc, so getting the base for the syrups is easy and cheap, so much so that ordering water as a drink is usually free.

in Canada, I've seen: prescription drug ads, garbage disposal machines (garburator), black friday sales, solo cups, free refills and canadian flags (though not as much as american flags in the US). These things are NOT only found in the USA
I never realized that free drink refills was an American thing, several of the restaurants I go to not only do you get free refills, but you get a free styrofoam to go cup full of your drink also.
I worked in the business office of a large retailer. Fighting over stuff on Black Friday is a recent development. Black Friday in the USA is the biggest sale day in the year so business make huge profits. Most retailers are in the RED, have a deficit, up until black Friday. Those profits put them in the BLACK, in profit, hence the term "Black FRIDAY" came about...
Dunno if I would say that is still the case with physical retailers in the last decade thanks to the appeal of online shopping. I worked for walmart from 2009-2019, When i first started Black friday was wall to wall shoppers but when i quit black friday wasnt even drawing 30% of the amount of people.
Red Solo cups - when I was growing up, I only started seeing them at high school & college parties, so if cops showed up, you wouldn't be caught with a beer bottle in your hand. At more adult parties (eg: cookouts), people would put ice in the cup. They would only need coolers for the ice rather than trying to pack every can & bottle into a cooler with the ice.
Free Refills on Coffee! Yes, if you’re at a restaurant having a meal like breakfast or any meal, you’ll normally get free refills on coffee. Some restaurants bring an entire carafe of coffee and leave it on your table! Mexican restaurants free chips and salsa while you wait for your food. Regular restaurants free bread while you wait.
Spray cheese doesn't really resemble anything someone outside the US would really consider cheese. It's not really sprayable like spray paint, it comes out of a nozzle that resembles the nozzle of a piping bag for decorating cakes. The stuff has the approximate consistency of toothpaste and it doesn't really come out under much pressure. Most people that I've seen eating it would apply it to a cracker or a hot dog about like one would apply toothpaste to a toothbrush, but you could be a little creative with it since it's dense enough to make layers with. It doesn't taste very pleasant, mostly just salty.
I’m a midwestern American. I have consumed spray cheese but only as a child. When I grew up so did my flavor pallet. Spray cheese is soft and tastes very processed. The upside is that it is spreadable like soft butter which goes well on crackers. But I prefer real cheese. Living near Wisconsin there is an abundance of quality dairy products including a wide variety of cheeses. And if you’ve never had cheese curds from a Wisconsin dairy shop, you are missing out entirely.
I’m a Kiwi now living in Canada and We have all of this in Canada too. It could be because of how close we are to the USA… NZ also has garbage disposals in the sinks… seeing the medical and lawyer ads was just weird.. free refills best thing ever, soda and coffee only though…. Beer, wine, milkshakes etc are not part of the free refills deal!!
I live in the US, and I have never heard of spray cheese. Garbage disposals are for small bits of food, like when you rinse a plate - NOT bones or large scraps….unless you like to pay plumbers to unclog your pipes. Some of us don’t give a hoot about college sports, but the colleges do get a lot of funding through sports programs 🤷♀️. I never go shopping on Black Friday. Not all restaurants offer free refills. When they come and ask if you want a refill, you get a nasty surprise on your bill. The places that do offer free refills generally do it on coffee, tea, and soda.

You should watch a video of a flag retirement ceremony! My son's cub scouts pack does flag retirement ceremonies at every campout. They have to cut the stripes apart and the field of stars, and then it all gets burned. Its really interesting to watch:)
The "cup" thing is funny. We used them back in the 70's. We had kegger parties, and used whatever was available. Who would have thought that would catch on in other countries. 😂
The odd thing about food waste disposals in sinks is that they were invented for environmental purposes in order to curb the volume of waste being dumped into our landfills particularly by large apartment complexes. In some suburban communities both disposals and trash compactors which compact solid trash into smaller cubes became mandatory in some states like New Jersey.
Huh. I'm my area, we used to burn our trash. The town set out "trash bins" Made from old 55 gallon oil drums that you'd only put food waist and paper into and once a week a man would come by and burn it then collect the ashes for use in the town gardens. Now it all goes to a land fill.
Are you sure about that? I was always taught that they came out of restaurants and institutional food services where they pay a lot more for trash hauling that the average residence. If they can reduce their dumpster count or pickup frequency, it can save hundreds of dollars per month with a small up-front capital investment.

Free refills may be related to how cheaply we can get soft drinks. In most restaurants, soft drinks come out of a fountain machine attached to what's called bag boxes, boxes containing large plastic pouches which contain the syrup used to make the drinks by mixing the syrup with carbonated water that is made using machines that carbonatee the water.
I still use spray cheese sometimes. The flavor isn't the best but texture is handy sometimes. I've used it when I've had dental issues and needed softer foods, and I've used it to hold sandwich ingredients together.
Regarding flags, we've flown the Stars and Stripes (aka Old Glory) on our front porch ever since 9/11. We said we'd fly it until every soldier comes home. And even though we pulled out of Afghanistan almost 2 years ago now, she's still flying. It's just what we do.
A lot of homes that don't usually have the American flag out front will put the flag up on holidays like Independence Day (4th of July), Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans' Day.
Americans also do not pay for ketchup, mustard, and sugar/sweetener packets while at restaurants, as these are considered free for use. I found it interesting that when in the UK a few years back, I had to pay for these.
I was over the cashier's at Victoria Secret for 7 years. I absolutely HATED Black Friday. We would have trouble even getting into the store to open it. People are extremely rude and impatient even though they KNOW there will be extremely long lines and limited supplies of items.
I probably wouldn't like easy cheese today. But I was absolutely obsessed with it when I was under the age of 14. I put that stuff in my meatloaf and mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. You would think I had never heard of shredded cheese before. Which, technically, I probably hadn't. I just never thought about it until I was older. And I discovered cheddar, and since the cheese I usually bought was American, I just never went back.
Black Friday is called, "Black Friday" as it is the day when many retailers' corporate balance sheets go from being in the "Red" to the profitable "Black". Typically most retailers make at least 20% or more of their business profits in the Christmas Shopping Season and "Black Friday" is the start. Cyber Monday is also a great day for online deals and the profitability of those retailers. The name has NOTHING to do with violence.
I actually enjoy the prescription medicine ads because they have to list the side effect if they say what the medicine treats. That has led to me hearing that " This medication may cause fissures of the perineum." That's a cracked taint. This will solve your heartburn but you might have a cracked taint
Just remember to look up how often it is. They have to account for all “side effects”, if anyone in the study had it. If something wild happened to 1% of people, it won’t deter me. If it is 70%, then I’ll rethink. Lol
And, if there are a LOT of side effects, they speed up the announcer going through the list so that he sounds like a cartoon squirrel. The side effects are no joke either, especially when you're watching a couple walking hand in hand through a sun dappled forest and the announcer is saying, "side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, blindness or death." Yeah, I'll ask my doctor for that one! LOL!
While flags were common before hand, after 9/11 it became much more commonplace. There was a rush on flags the next few days, with absolutely everyone running out of stock. Nationalism rose to an all-time high and flying flags became so engrained at that time that you see them everywhere now, from the traditional flagpoles outside government buildings and schools to the back of pickup trucks. During patriotic holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veteran's Day) almost every home will fly some sort of flag, many will have dozens of smaller flags along the perimeter of their yard.
Unless you're black, no shade. I'm patriotic and recognize the blessings of being born in probably the greatest country that ever existed modern day, but forgive me if I don't praise our flag and our national anthem.
For the teeth thing, I think it's more bleaching one's teeth isn't very common outside of the US. So we tend not to have super bright, unnaturally white teeth. Instead our teeth are more of a natural, duller white and there's not so much of an emphasis on them having to be perfectly straight, as long as they're healthy it's fine.
Teeth need to be pretty straight. They can be a little off but not much. It is very distracting to talk to someone with very crooked teeth. You are supposed to look people in the eye when talking to them but if they have bad teeth the person can't help but move from eye contact to looking at their teeth then realize the are doing it and make eye contact again. You kind of can't help doing it. It is like if someone has a huge zit on their face it is hard not to focus on it.
Re: free refills -- When I drive from Houston to Dallas there's a McDonalds on the Interstate about halfway where I stop for coffee and the bathroom. They have a sign saying "No free refills except on the day you buy the drink." Evidently they had a problem with the locals buying a soda on Monday and bringing the cup back Tuesday for a refill.
when I worked as a private security guard, I observed a homeless person taking a cup from the trash at the fast food place in the shopping mall. They filled it with soda for free. I informed the owner of the fast food place, but since I had not observed a felony, I could not make a citizen's arrest. And the owner did not authorize me to escort them out. I could only be disgusted. lol. I intervened on all kinds of stuff at that job, for example one time a guy was trying to kidnap his ex-wife and their son. I kept the guy off of her and he left just before the police arrived. The San Jose Police always patted me on the back and said I did everything they would have wanted me to do, but the head of security at the shopping mall would tell me I should have stayed away and just observed and reported. I told him, if I hadn't intervened, I would have observed and reported a kidnapping, and possibly a murder. You can take the boy out of the Navy but you can't take the Navy out of the boy. lol.🙂
We have garbage disposals in Canada. Weirdly enough we celebrate Black Friday in Canada, but it is celebrated the same day as USA. Even though our thanksgiving is a month earlier than the USA. We have red solo cups.
Black Friday has become ubiquitous in Canada, simply because we buy so much stuff from the U.S. via online shopping, catalogs, and American brands. So for the Canadian retailers to keep up, they have Black Friday sales when the Americans do, even though our own Thanksgiving was 6 weeks earlier. And we still have Boxing Day sales here in Canada.

We have nearly all this stuff in Canada except I haven’t seen spray cheese (although I tried it years ago when I spent a lot of time in Florida) and our college sports are not paid attention to much outside of students going there. I have the one of the largest garbage disposal units you can get called an Insinkerator. Generically we call ‘em garburators up here! 😂
Free drink refills only really exist in a restaurant and does NOT apply to alcoholic beverages. Usually only non-alcoholic carbonated beverages, teas and coffees (hot or iced). Rarely will a free refill be available for a barista type beverage. You'll never see free refills in movie theaters but you will see huge beverage sizes. I mean HUGE!
In the theaters I'm used to (I've almost always gone to a Harkins, haven't gone to an AMC or whatever else too often) there's a plastic souvenir cup you can buy each year that is then $1 refills all year (although the price might be higher than that now with inflation the last few years? stayed solid at $1 for decades but I think it might be more like $2.50 now?) or you can buy the cheap/disposable paper cup and get one free refill in it. One free refill for the bag of popcorn too. No self-serve to fill or refill anything there... except maybe at this one Harkins... There's the main concessions counter with employees spread out over a few dozen registers as soon as you enter but there are also smaller concessions at the end of each side hallway (half the theaters are to the left and half are to the right, so each small concessions is in the middle of half of the theater doors). It is self-serve drinks at those smaller concessions, but from what I recall I've almost never seen them actually be open at any point in the last couple decades. They always have it roped off and you have to go to the main counter in the center.
Our local movie theaters have multiple drink sizes and free refills at soda freestyle machines. I've commonly seen them at movie theaters in other states as well. Yours sound unique. (I usually get flavored or plain seltzer in mine.)
I will say that Black Friday sales are increasingly not that much of a deal in in recent years prior it when you were go, sit outside and wait for the store to open and on the evening of Thanksgiving, you would actually get really huge discount deals but lately it hasn’t been that big of a deal and with the availability of cyber Monday as an option and more people are buying things online if the deals aren’t that big of a difference they’d rather just wait to do it online or just do it in normal business hours
Disclaimer: this video completely fails at explaining where the term “Black Friday” comes from - although there is violence that occurs, the “black” part of Black Friday comes from a business term that compares to being “in the red” vs. “went into black”. It’s just comparing net profit vs. net loss in revenue.

The earliest records of usage of the term Black Friday in connection with the day after thanksgiving were by police in Philadelphia in the 1950s complaining about the heavy crowds which required extra work in doing crowd control. It wasn’t until later that the businesses decided to try to flip the term into something positive instead of negative and invented the explanation that it referred to “in the black” vs “in the red” and then after that usage gained popularity it then spread nationwide.
So while in many regions the initial usage of the term was the economic reference, the original connection to the day does in fact refer to the unruly crowds.

And probably only exist at all due to, "soda fountains". Seems like most of the rest of the world does not use syrup bottles, tanks of co2 and mix it "as needed" - they are more likely to have a refrigerator with cans of soda. Those cans cost maybe a $1 each, not including markup from both the manufacturer and business. The, "make as needed", version from syrup probably costs pennies a glass, over all. If it costs you almost nothing more than refilling a glass with water from the tap to refill a soft drink, there is no real point in charging for it - especially if, at most, half of your customers won't drink more than the single glass anyway, and almost none of them will ask for a third, never mind 4th.

Fast food chains often have different rules than main stream restaurants, so I have literally no idea if they do or don't charge for refills in other countries, some of them, none of them, etc.
In context, what fast food franchises do compared to literally *every other traditional place* is... not necessarily relevant to whether or not the overall perception is thst you can only expect refills in the US.

It's worth pointing out that we don't use red Solo cups just for beer. People like to have picnics and barbeques away from home, or maybe barbeque in their backyard and have people over. It's much more convenient to have plastic cups and paper plates for this purpose, rather than drag around glasses and dishes, or wash a bunch of dishes. Just pointing that out since the video said everyone else just uses glasses and mugs.
I would also add though that the American “iconography” around solo cups these type videos always mention is almost exclusively a college party thing. Not only would it be very weird to go to a party and not see solos, I went on more than one “cup run” to the store in college specifically to get only cups. You’re right we obviously use them for way more than just beer pong, but not nearly to the degree that I think these videos think they get used if that makes sense lol
True. Solos or equivalent are mostly for events where there's more people than you have glassware, and you don't want to risk having it broken anyways. Just you and friends it's the regular glassware of the house being used. If it's something where friends can invite their family and friends over too, then you get the stacks of disposable cups.
I always equated red plastics cups for parties, potlucks, and any event hosting food for more than 10 that wasn’t a hotel or restaurant.
I keep solos at the house. When a guest or service person comes in I offer them a drink of water or soda. So when they leave they can take their drink with them.
When we have a large family gathering like at holidays, we use Solo cups and there's always a sharpie so you can "name your cup". The smart alecks in the crowd take that literally rather than writing their own name on the cup.
To explain the flag sales count. We put small ones on every fallen soldier’s grave on Memorial Day and other holidays. Not including all the buildings and homes that have them.
Plus we are considerably larger with a massive population compared to Britain.
Not just holidays tho, we have flag in a lot of places other countries don't. Like cars etc.
Some federal buildings even put out tiny flags covering the ground for fallen soldiers. Plus, in the video the flag was drawn wrong on the school house. We even have Flag day June 14th. Plus if flags get soiled, washed out or touches the ground, you are to place a new up. Back when I was a child my grandfather who fought in WWII would go out every morning and put the flag up, before sunset he would take it down. He taught my brother and I in how to properly fold the flag. He even flew it half staffed when the country was mourning. I remember when the Oklahoma bombing happened he flew the flag at half staffed.
I would say, memorial day, 4th of july, and presidents day is likely where alot of the american flag sales come from, i dont think alot of other countries have multiple holidays celebrating their country like the usa does. I could be wrong tho.

In most countries the flag represents the government, in the US the flag represents "We the People". That's why so many of us fly it proudly.

Ok, name another country where it's written into the constitution that it's the duty of the people to replace an oppressive or tyrannical government. I'll wait.
Technically, the flag represents the states (stars), and the stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The colors are symbolic: red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. For US citizens, the flag as a whole represents our freedom, and most directly correlate that back to those men and women who have sacrificed to preserve that freedom.
30 years later I still find it weird to see flags like that. Feels like it cheapens it.
Unfortunately, these days flag flyers are likely to be Trumpers, and NOT because they embody a democratic ethos. It's just co-opted BS, and very sad.

Although garbage disposals are not authorized by the European Union, countries in Europe may authorize their use.
The reason why the use of garbage disposals is not common in Europe is because they want to reduce the number of sewer blockages. Much of Europe has older plumbing which uses smaller piping and is unable to carry the extra load of kitchen waste.
Sewage treatment plants in the United States are more modern and can process organic solids into fertilizer and some have the capability of capturing methane gas for energy production.
Something to add is that garbage disposals are not recommended for use in homes with a septic system. You don't want to be filling your septic tank up with food waste, causing it to need to be pumped out twice as often. My house has septic, and I'll never install a garbage disposal. Things that people typically put down the disposal go in our compost pile instead.

The decomposition of your trash in the landfill will likely result in more damaging greenhouse gas emissions, since the breakdown of your food waste may produce methane so quickly that it can’t be captured. By contrast, some wastewater-treatment systems are actually looking for more food solids, since that will make the process of converting waste into energy more efficient. And wastewater-treatment plants also provide a way to reuse leftover food as fertilizer.

We have a septic tank and a garbage disposal. I don’t put food in the disposal and grind it up, but what little scraps are left in my sink I was down the disposal.
I have not pumped my tank in over 18 years.
I have no issues with my tank.

As an American who just got back from a few weeks in the UK, I can appreciate this video. I didn't realize that garbage disposals were primarily American. And I love our large clothes washers and dryers.
We (UK) used to have garbage disposals in the 80s/90s. For some reason the sucked and got removed.

Garbage disposal units are fairly common in Australia, especially high rise apartments & newer homes.
A lot of these come down to convenience. Solo cups (and disposable dishes in general) are way more convenient than washing a bunch of dishes for big gatherings.
Spray cheese exists but most Americans don’t buy it. Foreigners make a big deal about it. People may buy it for a child’s birthday party but most of our cheese is the sane as anywhere else.
Probably half the cans sold are bought solely for the purpose of tricking dogs into eating their medication lol. If hiding the pill in a meat ball made out of dog food doesn't work, hiding it in a blob of spray cheese usually will 😂

In these videos made outside the US they frequently show a traditional paint spray can as the can for spray cheese. It does not spray out like paint or deodorant. It squirts out relatively slowly so you can put it on crackers.

What non-Americans might not know is that those are measurement markings on a Red Solo cup: the bottom line is a 1 ounce measurement, the next up is a 5 ounce measurement, and the third from the bottom is a 12 ounce measurement (30ml, 150ml, 360ml)
Spray cheese is something I’d categorize as cheap junk food snack. Nobody would actually consider it quality food, but more along the lines of something like cheetos/wotsits.

You could think of it like a soft cheese log, which would be served with crackers, etc., but with a bloody long shelf life. It's a bit weird, but in some contexts it's more convenient.
Not every restaurant offers free refills on beverages, and never for wine beer or alcohol. some fast food restaurants offer refills of soda, and diners will usually offer refills of regular coffee as well as soda or iced tea. Don't expect a fine dining establishment to offer refills, except sometimes for bread baskets.
Tipping is also expected except for self serve fast food.
They have bottomless brunches but those are often pricey
The lines on solo cups are for measuring out and mixing different drinks. There are several mixing guides out there.
They weren’t created for alcohol, they were created as a picnic cup, disposable. Just because they’ve become synonymous with drinking doesn’t mean the lines were made for measuring alcohol, they have been adapted to be used that way. There’s a big difference between “created for” and “adapted for.”
The drain pipe from the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink goes to the same pipe as the toilet. That pipe goes to the waste treatment plant. If putting scraps in the disposal isn't environmentally friendly, then taking a dump in the toilet isn't either.
It seems like food waste would be among the most environmentally friendly things that I can imagine. It's just food.

To me the biggest concern would seem to be fats and oils. Those tend to congeal at slow points in the flow, especially if there are strands of stuff - mostly hair - to catch on sharp edges. Fairly regularly a team has to go in and blast those to pieces with a water jet. Not a job for the faint of heart.
Fats and hair are also big problems for septic tanks.
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 Just like with a normal sink or drain you don't put fats and oils down the disposal either. It's primarily used for food scraps like peals or egg shells. Putting leftover scraps down it can be done meaning you could get some meat scraps that might have some fat on them but I don't think there would be enough for it to cause a clogging problem. You typically run the water when you put stuff in the disposal to wash the solids down the drain since the disposal just chops the stuff up into smaller pieces.
As a kid, I loved eating spray cheese on crackers. The bonus was the fun of making cool designs on the crackers. The tip of the can looked like a cake decorating tip, so could get fancy with decorating. It was art, entertainment and tasty snack all together. Haven't had any in years, but now I'm craving some.
I loved it as a kid too. I used to squirt it right into my mouth. I tried some again recently and it was disgusting. Maybe they changed the formula, but I suspect my palate has just improved, lol.

I'm American, but I noticed when I visited France that when I ordered a coke at a restaurant it came in a glass bottle and you poured it over the ice yourself. Obviously, you had to pay for a new bottle if you wanted another drink. This is very different from the restaurants in America, which usually have a soda fountain that mixes the seltzer with the flavor syrup as it comes out of the machine. No bottles are involved. I don't know about other countries than that, but I'm sure that the soda fountain cuts down on bottling costs and may contribute to why you don't usually have to pay for refills in the US.
I tried getting a soda in Mexico from one of these machines, and I really wish I hadn’t.

That's because in France you can NOT drink the water so fountain drinks are not viable.
A lot of European countries have a deposit system for bottles. So if you return your bottles, you get the money back. I wouldn’t be surprised if restaurants make a little profit serving bottles instead.

One reason SOLO cups gained popularity is bar tenders at event locations could get accurate pours for liquor (1oz), wine (5oz), short beers (12oz) and pints (16oz) using the lines on the cup. Treated as disposable, there was no need to collect and wash glassware and eliminated potential missiles (full bottles and cans) at events where alcohol was sold. Business thought they were great and eventually everyone else did too.

The “Big House” (Michigan’s Football Stadium) is absolutely massive. I went to a game there when they played my husband’s Alma mater, Penn State. They packed you in so tightly that you can’t even stand straight, you have to sort of stand sideways. And you definitely can’t sit down. I am glad I went just to see it, but it gave me a panic attack and we had to leave. Thankfully, my husband is very kind and supportive of me and my mental health.

A big reason why so many flags are sold every year in the US is because it can be seen as disrespectful to fly a flag that’s too faded or torn so a lot of times, at least to my family by the end of the year the flags we fly are usually no good so we put them to rest by disposing of them properly, and then get a new flag to fly

It's ironic that Brits especially express surprise at all the flags. We'll never have enough flags to match the number of images of the king that they have. The water we get in restaurants is also typically tap water, whereas in most of Europe it's bottled. That's likely the difference. Better restaurants in the US have filtration systems for their drinking water, but in the lower-end places it's straight out of the tap.
As a Scot, all you needed to do is ask for a glass of tap water. Of course they will charge for bottled water that they have to buy in themselves but you'll always get tap water free.

About spray cheese....I guess it's an acquired taste, for most. Like many things of my 1970's youth, this was a brand new, revolutionary item. As such, it was expensive and (we) used it for special occasions, New Year's, in particular.
Today, I use it when I get nostalgic during the winter, as a morale booster for my seasonal depression. The memories it brings back helps me purge my emotions over the course of a few days. So, yeah. I guess it's rather an important "Gen X" thing.
Funny enough, I happen to work as a night stock person (yeah, say "night stocker" and see whut looks ya get, mate!) at that store on the label.
The garbage disposal is actually trademarked as "Dispose-All", as in "Dispose All extras down the sink). Dishwashers are also fitted with the same type of grinder, to prevent pipe clogging. If you're smart, you'll use citric acid (just add a bottle of lemon juice or white vinegar or pay out the nose for a powdered version) every couple of months, the break up the grease and help release the small food particles. And regularly clean your dish washer's filter(s)!
For the free refills thing, it's usually for fountain drinks (coke sprite, etc. Sometimes tea, at least in the south) But sometimes special drinks won't have free refills. Like Mango tea, hot chocolate or something. As far as I'm aware it will list it on the menu at a restaurant, but you can always ask if a drink has free refills or not before you order it for the first time.
Also free coffee refills. At least for seniors at McDonald's.
We use red solo cups because we throw larger parties here. Yes we drink from beer cans and beer bottles too, we don’t just pour bottles into these cups, these cups are mainly used for drinking from beer kegs (58L). This was started from house parties and Frat parties or beer busts. With that being said we usually have at least 20 guests at small get togethers, do you have 30 pint glasses in your home? I don’t. Plus there’s washing and breakage. Also if you can buy 240 cups for $18.00, you’d buy them and use them whenever to have s get together too. Whether it’s for water (from the fridge), soda (from a 2 liter bottle) or a mixed drink. So that’s our obsession with the solo cup, cheap, plentiful readily available for large parties. Example: our 4th of July party (2023) we had 100+ guests between two houses this year

The literal only time I know of that my family *ever* had them was in cases like a party, a picnic, where you might not want you good cups with you, or probably most common for me either company picnics and/or from food carts/booths, etc. at a fairer ground. Theme parks generally have something they is identical, but with art and design that matches the theme (and usually a bit different, longer lasting, plastic).

It is a brand of cheap plastic disposable cup. There are other brands and a wide variety of color options available. Alternatives include styrofoam cups and paper cups. Dixie cups at least used to be the best known brand of paper cup. Most common use is probably for fast food or restaurant takeout. I think I’ve seen the red cups the most at fairs and theme parks, so it makes sense that this might seem like a bigger thing to tourists than it does to us. Big chain fast food places usually use branded paper cups. Restaurants that use washable drink ware for dine-in I usually see using a clear disposable cup or styrofoam cup for takeout. I don’t attend enough sporting events or concerts to have an impression of what may be typical from those concession stands, but I would not be surprised if it was the red Solo cup.
Agreed, when we have just immediate family get togethers we have 26 people including the kids. If we have all the family members including grandparents aunts uncles cousins we have around 110 people! Solo cups are necessary we put them out with sharpie pens so everyone puts their name on them to keep them straight 😂😂😂

Calling it "spray cheese" is a bit of a misnomer because it doesn't really spray. It's basically just cheese dip in a pressurized can that comes out slow and thick, kind of like neosporin or something. The only time I ever used to buy it was when I was younger and would go on multi-day backpacking/camping trips. It's calorie-dense and doesn't need refrigeration even AFTER you open it. So it's pretty good for that kind of thing. (Dehydrated foods were hard to find and very expensive back then.)
Garbage disposals are uncommon, and virtually every plumber shudders when you mention them because toilets notwithstanding, household plumbing is not intended for solid waste. But what they basically are is a blender in your drain. You dump non-animal food waste in there, run the water, turn the switch on, and it just sort of mulches it all into slop and rinses it down the drain. You're not supposed to do meats or fats though, because those will stick to the pipes, restrict flow, and eventually block it entirely. Plus since fat floats on water you might not rinse it all down successfully, resulting in rotting stuff stuck in the drain, stinkin up the kitchen.
Define "uncommon". More than 50% of homes in USA have them. I've lived in several regions of the U.S. and have seen them everywhere. I have noticed they are not as common in rentals.

I've lived in over ten homes in my life only one had a disposal, it was a rental. I haven't been in many homes that had them either. But I mostly visit in areas with septic systems which are a no no for disposals.

The name comes from accounting practices. For a lot of retain companies, they are financially “in the red” (not making a yearly profit) until the Christmas season, which starts on “Black Friday”. This is a myth. The idea that ANY retail companies operate at a loss 11 months out of the year is absurd. If the Christmas season is the only time you make a profit, either you are a Christmas-exclusive business or you are doing it wrong.
Medical ads haven’t always been common here. I remember thinking they were weird when they started and still do because sometimes they are vague about what the medicine is for and you have to call for more information.
It’s basically a way from pharmaceutical companies to try to get around the physicians and encourage the patients to pressure their doctors to prescribe it to them.
And a year later there is usually a law suit after televised meds killed a few people.

American here and I can confirm that canned (spray) cheese isn't usually bought much. It's more of a novelty or joke item and tends to taste nasty in my opinion. Some people do get it and it has uses but it's seen as a low teir condiment. The most memorable thing about it is the very unique sound it makes coming out of the can lol

About the large number of USA flags sold each year, remember many flags are planted on the graves of military veterans each Memorial Day, Veterans Day and July 4th. It doesn't matter if the person was buried the day prior or in 1775. Plus, a relative of a deceased veteran is presented the folded flag used to honor the veteran during the ceremony. Further, many military units will present a vet a flag clown at their last base of unit when three vet is retires from the military.
So even before discussing flags in parade, town at government buildings, etc, there's a lot of other flags used to honor veterans, alive and dead.
Exactly. Plus, the flag code requires us to replace a tattered flag. I have the scouts respectfully retire my worn-out flags and get new ones pretty frequently.

When my sister and I visited the UK, they had spray cheese in the “American Foods” section of a few grocery stores. It was probably 3x what it costs here. No wonder my aunt who lives in Scotland had us bring her a whole suitcase full of stuff that was hard to find there.
1) Lawyer/Medical Ads: It's because they feel the need to "sell" us on it. I think most people ignore them.
2) Spray Cheese: It can be convenient, but most people prefer the real deal.
3) Garbage Disposal: They're supposed to be good for creating mulch for plants and stuff, I think. I guess in cities, it gets mixed in with general water stuff, but the ones I've seen had it so it went into a separate bin.
4) College Sports: I don't really get it either. I guess, kind of like you support the team from your state.
5) White Teeth: I know lots of people from outside the US with white teeth?
6) Black Friday: I don't do Black Friday, but they do go kind of crazy.
7) Solo Cup: I'm pretty sure they have those elsewhere too. They're typically not used at bars though, just at parties for the ease of cleanup after.
8) Free Refills: I mean, if we're paying that kind of money, it BETTER be with refills. My minimum is 2 refills. I need my coffee.
9) Flags: Well, we're proud to be American.

The cheese is actually derived from squeeze cheese from the 80s. It's part of car culture. It started as an easy snack on road trips where mom would squeeze cheese onto crackers and pass them around. It pairs well with a slice of carl budding lunch meat. It used to come in a clear tube you had to squeeze, then later came in pressurized cans. Its brilliant, I dont care what foreigners think of it.

Back in the 80s when I went to London. My very first morning having breakfast. I had toast jelly and 4 cups of coffee. And it was like 13 bucks because the coffee was a $1.80 a cup with no refills in the states. It was 50 cents a cup with unlimited refills. We couldn't believe that.

They are used for food waste, it's to keep the kitchen from smelling like rotting food from the garbage can. Also, it's not environmentally unsafe, other countries are ignorant and don't understand the minerals and vitamins that are going back into the water at the water treatment plant. Some kitchens have composters, to be used as fertilizer for gardens. The strainer you mentioned is to catch food particles, this can also be used on the disposal side of the sink. Either way, the disposal is for ALL food scraps.
I have a way to stop the kitchen from smelling like rotten food waste from the garbage can. It's called taking out the trash.

Free Refills: The US has literally megatons of fresh water in lakes, rivers, etc, so getting the base for the syrups is easy and cheap, so much so that ordering water as a drink is usually free.

in Canada, I've seen: prescription drug ads, garbage disposal machines (garburator), black friday sales, solo cups, free refills and canadian flags (though not as much as american flags in the US). These things are NOT only found in the USA

I worked in the business office of a large retailer. Fighting over stuff on Black Friday is a recent development.
Black Friday in the USA is the biggest sale day in the year so business make huge profits. Most retailers are in the RED, have a deficit, up until black Friday. Those profits put them in the BLACK, in profit, hence the term "Black FRIDAY" came about...
Dunno if I would say that is still the case with physical retailers in the last decade thanks to the appeal of online shopping. I worked for walmart from 2009-2019, When i first started Black friday was wall to wall shoppers but when i quit black friday wasnt even drawing 30% of the amount of people.

Red Solo cups - when I was growing up, I only started seeing them at high school & college parties, so if cops showed up, you wouldn't be caught with a beer bottle in your hand.
At more adult parties (eg: cookouts), people would put ice in the cup. They would only need coolers for the ice rather than trying to pack every can & bottle into a cooler with the ice.

Bread rolls. Not always plain white bread rolls. They always come with butter. Some have honey on top, or cheddar biscuits.

Spray cheese doesn't really resemble anything someone outside the US would really consider cheese. It's not really sprayable like spray paint, it comes out of a nozzle that resembles the nozzle of a piping bag for decorating cakes. The stuff has the approximate consistency of toothpaste and it doesn't really come out under much pressure. Most people that I've seen eating it would apply it to a cracker or a hot dog about like one would apply toothpaste to a toothbrush, but you could be a little creative with it since it's dense enough to make layers with. It doesn't taste very pleasant, mostly just salty.
When I was younger I LOVED spray cheese and usually finished an entire can at once. LOL.
I’m a midwestern American. I have consumed spray cheese but only as a child. When I grew up so did my flavor pallet. Spray cheese is soft and tastes very processed. The upside is that it is spreadable like soft butter which goes well on crackers. But I prefer real cheese. Living near Wisconsin there is an abundance of quality dairy products including a wide variety of cheeses. And if you’ve never had cheese curds from a Wisconsin dairy shop, you are missing out entirely.

It could be because of how close we are to the USA… NZ also has garbage disposals in the sinks… seeing the medical and lawyer ads was just weird.. free refills best thing ever, soda and coffee only though…. Beer, wine, milkshakes etc are not part of the free refills deal!!

I live in the US, and I have never heard of spray cheese. Garbage disposals are for small bits of food, like when you rinse a plate - NOT bones or large scraps….unless you like to pay plumbers to unclog your pipes. Some of us don’t give a hoot about college sports, but the colleges do get a lot of funding through sports programs 🤷♀️. I never go shopping on Black Friday. Not all restaurants offer free refills. When they come and ask if you want a refill, you get a nasty surprise on your bill. The places that do offer free refills generally do it on coffee, tea, and soda.

You should watch a video of a flag retirement ceremony! My son's cub scouts pack does flag retirement ceremonies at every campout. They have to cut the stripes apart and the field of stars, and then it all gets burned. Its really interesting to watch:)

The odd thing about food waste disposals in sinks is that they were invented for environmental purposes in order to curb the volume of waste being dumped into our landfills particularly by large apartment complexes. In some suburban communities both disposals and trash compactors which compact solid trash into smaller cubes became mandatory in some states like New Jersey.
Huh. I'm my area, we used to burn our trash. The town set out "trash bins" Made from old 55 gallon oil drums that you'd only put food waist and paper into and once a week a man would come by and burn it then collect the ashes for use in the town gardens. Now it all goes to a land fill.
Incinerators were big before garbage disposals too. Lots of extra pollution there.
Are you sure about that? I was always taught that they came out of restaurants and institutional food services where they pay a lot more for trash hauling that the average residence. If they can reduce their dumpster count or pickup frequency, it can save hundreds of dollars per month with a small up-front capital investment.

One of the reasons for Solo cups is that large parties tend to use a keg of beer, not bottles or cans.
Free refills may be related to how cheaply we can get soft drinks. In most restaurants, soft drinks come out of a fountain machine attached to what's called bag boxes, boxes containing large plastic pouches which contain the syrup used to make the drinks by mixing the syrup with carbonated water that is made using machines that carbonatee the water.
I still use spray cheese sometimes. The flavor isn't the best but texture is handy sometimes. I've used it when I've had dental issues and needed softer foods, and I've used it to hold sandwich ingredients together.
The garbage disposal usually has a switch right next to the sink to turn it on. But the catch is to have water running to as not to burn it out quick

Regarding flags, we've flown the Stars and Stripes (aka Old Glory) on our front porch ever since 9/11. We said we'd fly it until every soldier comes home. And even though we pulled out of Afghanistan almost 2 years ago now, she's still flying. It's just what we do.

A lot of homes that don't usually have the American flag out front will put the flag up on holidays like Independence Day (4th of July), Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans' Day.
Americans also do not pay for ketchup, mustard, and sugar/sweetener packets while at restaurants, as these are considered free for use. I found it interesting that when in the UK a few years back, I had to pay for these.
I was over the cashier's at Victoria Secret for 7 years. I absolutely HATED Black Friday. We would have trouble even getting into the store to open it. People are extremely rude and impatient even though they KNOW there will be extremely long lines and limited supplies of items.
I probably wouldn't like easy cheese today. But I was absolutely obsessed with it when I was under the age of 14. I put that stuff in my meatloaf and mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. You would think I had never heard of shredded cheese before. Which, technically, I probably hadn't. I just never thought about it until I was older. And I discovered cheddar, and since the cheese I usually bought was American, I just never went back.

Black Friday is called, "Black Friday" as it is the day when many retailers' corporate balance sheets go from being in the "Red" to the profitable "Black". Typically most retailers make at least 20% or more of their business profits in the Christmas Shopping Season and "Black Friday" is the start. Cyber Monday is also a great day for online deals and the profitability of those retailers. The name has NOTHING to do with violence.
I actually enjoy the prescription medicine ads because they have to list the side effect if they say what the medicine treats. That has led to me hearing that " This medication may cause fissures of the perineum." That's a cracked taint. This will solve your heartburn but you might have a cracked taint
Just remember to look up how often it is. They have to account for all “side effects”, if anyone in the study had it. If something wild happened to 1% of people, it won’t deter me. If it is 70%, then I’ll rethink. Lol

And, if there are a LOT of side effects, they speed up the announcer going through the list so that he sounds like a cartoon squirrel. The side effects are no joke either, especially when you're watching a couple walking hand in hand through a sun dappled forest and the announcer is saying, "side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, blindness or death." While flags were common before hand, after 9/11 it became much more commonplace. There was a rush on flags the next few days, with absolutely everyone running out of stock. Nationalism rose to an all-time high and flying flags became so engrained at that time that you see them everywhere now, from the traditional flagpoles outside government buildings and schools to the back of pickup trucks. During patriotic holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veteran's Day) almost every home will fly some sort of flag, many will have dozens of smaller flags along the perimeter of their yard.
Unless you're black, no shade. I'm patriotic and recognize the blessings of being born in probably the greatest country that ever existed modern day, but forgive me if I don't praise our flag and our national anthem.

For the teeth thing, I think it's more bleaching one's teeth isn't very common outside of the US. So we tend not to have super bright, unnaturally white teeth. Instead our teeth are more of a natural, duller white and there's not so much of an emphasis on them having to be perfectly straight, as long as they're healthy it's fine.
Teeth need to be pretty straight. They can be a little off but not much. It is very distracting to talk to someone with very crooked teeth. You are supposed to look people in the eye when talking to them but if they have bad teeth the person can't help but move from eye contact to looking at their teeth then realize the are doing it and make eye contact again. You kind of can't help doing it. It is like if someone has a huge zit on their face it is hard not to focus on it.
Its noth healthy either. Actually white is NOT a natural color of teeth. They are yellow, brown, grey, or various shades and combinations.
Re: free refills -- When I drive from Houston to Dallas there's a McDonalds on the Interstate about halfway where I stop for coffee and the bathroom. They have a sign saying "No free refills except on the day you buy the drink." Evidently they had a problem with the locals buying a soda on Monday and bringing the cup back Tuesday for a refill.
😂😂 Most places don’t allow that. But there is a donut shop I go to that you buy their cup and get free refills from then on if you have the cup.
when I worked as a private security guard, I observed a homeless person taking a cup from the trash at the fast food place in the shopping mall. They filled it with soda for free. I informed the owner of the fast food place, but since I had not observed a felony, I could not make a citizen's arrest. And the owner did not authorize me to escort them out. I could only be disgusted. lol.
I intervened on all kinds of stuff at that job, for example one time a guy was trying to kidnap his ex-wife and their son. I kept the guy off of her and he left just before the police arrived. The San Jose Police always patted me on the back and said I did everything they would have wanted me to do, but the head of security at the shopping mall would tell me I should have stayed away and just observed and reported. I told him, if I hadn't intervened, I would have observed and reported a kidnapping, and possibly a murder. You can take the boy out of the Navy but you can't take the Navy out of the boy. lol.🙂

Weirdly enough we celebrate Black Friday in Canada, but it is celebrated the same day as USA. Even though our thanksgiving is a month earlier than the USA.

Black Friday has become ubiquitous in Canada, simply because we buy so much stuff from the U.S. via online shopping, catalogs, and American brands. So for the Canadian retailers to keep up, they have Black Friday sales when the Americans do, even though our own Thanksgiving was 6 weeks earlier.
And we still have Boxing Day sales here in Canada.

We have nearly all this stuff in Canada except I haven’t seen spray cheese (although I tried it years ago when I spent a lot of time in Florida) and our college sports are not paid attention to much outside of students going there. I have the one of the largest garbage disposal units you can get called an Insinkerator. Generically we call ‘em garburators up here! 😂
Free drink refills only really exist in a restaurant and does NOT apply to alcoholic beverages. Usually only non-alcoholic carbonated beverages, teas and coffees (hot or iced). Rarely will a free refill be available for a barista type beverage. You'll never see free refills in movie theaters but you will see huge beverage sizes. I mean HUGE!
The theater by me has free refills. It's just like a restaurant where they give you a cup, and you go fill it yourself.
In the theaters I'm used to (I've almost always gone to a Harkins, haven't gone to an AMC or whatever else too often) there's a plastic souvenir cup you can buy each year that is then $1 refills all year (although the price might be higher than that now with inflation the last few years? stayed solid at $1 for decades but I think it might be more like $2.50 now?) or you can buy the cheap/disposable paper cup and get one free refill in it. One free refill for the bag of popcorn too. No self-serve to fill or refill anything there... except maybe at this one Harkins... There's the main concessions counter with employees spread out over a few dozen registers as soon as you enter but there are also smaller concessions at the end of each side hallway (half the theaters are to the left and half are to the right, so each small concessions is in the middle of half of the theater doors). It is self-serve drinks at those smaller concessions, but from what I recall I've almost never seen them actually be open at any point in the last couple decades. They always have it roped off and you have to go to the main counter in the center.
Our local movie theaters have multiple drink sizes and free refills at soda freestyle machines. I've commonly seen them at movie theaters in other states as well. Yours sound unique. (I usually get flavored or plain seltzer in mine.)
Some theaters will give free refills if you purchase the large drink and some do this for the large popcorn as well.
I will say that Black Friday sales are increasingly not that much of a deal in in recent years prior it when you were go, sit outside and wait for the store to open and on the evening of Thanksgiving, you would actually get really huge discount deals but lately it hasn’t been that big of a deal and with the availability of cyber Monday as an option and more people are buying things online if the deals aren’t that big of a difference they’d rather just wait to do it online or just do it in normal business hours
