Prom is such a massive thing in America. In Australia, all we have is Formal, and it's essentially paying around 65-$100 to go to an old hall. Dressing in Somewhat formal clothing or what you can afford as a 17 year old, and paying heaps of money for a small dinner consisting of Frozen food reheated and made to look ostentatious and pompous whilst trying to ignore the fact that the majority of the year level is on drugs, or heavily intoxicated, despite the fact drugs like Shrooms, Ketamine , Weed, Other miscellaneous pills, and massive amounts of alcohol are either not allowed or illegal in the country.
Note:
By law you aren't allowed to get a job until you're 16.
You can't get your drivers licence until you're 18.
And the whole "Asking someone out aspect of it all angers teachers. If a student came into class with flowers and asked someone to "Go to formal with them", you'd probably get suspended or expelled.
That's Australia for you..

Things have really changed since I was in high school. There were so many restrictions that only about a quarter of the class got to go. First you had to be a member of the senior class of our high school. You had to be part of an established couple. The definition of an established couple is one that registered as a couple by the end of September and were still a couple as of prom night. You had to have a gpa of no less than 2.5. There was no going alone. Tickets were for couples not singles. If you showed up alone you didn't get in period. This was 1979 and the tickets were $200 per couple. Tickets had to be paid for by Dec 31. Guys got their tuxes from the official tux vender. Girls got their gowns from the official gown vender. The prom was at a nearby hotel. You arrived at the high school and got in line and then a school bus would take you to the prom venue. Out of a class of 125, 14 couples were permitted to attend the prom. I didn't go. Most people I knew didn't go because most people were not part of a registered couple. Our high school didn't have a Jr. Prom. But they did have a Jr. spring dance where Juniors could dress up and go to that. The other thing I noticed is that today most high schools seem to let kids date outside their class. That was not permitted when I was in high school. If you were a senior you were only permitted to date other seniors. I don't remember if we were permitted to date students from other schools but I never heard of anyone who did. Also, these promposals just were not a thing back then. If you were part of an established couple and you qualified with high enough grades you were expected to go. If you didn't then people suspected you were breaking up. There was no "will you go to the prom with me?" It was assumed. Plus since tickets had to be bought by the end of December, flowers certainly would not be part of it. In those days florists really didn't do much business in December. Flowers were almost completely out of season. It wouldn't be until around the tenth of February that you could buy fresh flowers and they had to be shipped in for Valentine's day. And of course the guys had to get fitted for their tuxes by January. Some of the boys got orchards for their prom dates but those were incredibly expensive. My buddy paid $20 for the one he got his girlfriend. I would also like to point out that 4 of the couples out of 14 were already married and half the rest were engaged. So the who thing was a very exclusive affair.
