These two guys (and many of the musicians they've played with) were and are almost incomprehensibly brilliant. What they've created as new parts of reality feel like a gift beyond measure.
I've palyed my whole life and can't even approach a tune like this with such freedom. It would take me multiple lifetimes. To me it's like one of the wonders of the world!
I have never seen anybody play the vibraphone that amazingly before, stunning playing, been brushing round the edge of the jazz scene for a while now but this has me hooked, I love the technicality, the musicality. Truly stunning music
The answer is simple; Crystal Silence. When Manfred Eicher brought the two geniuses together for the first time in Rainbow Studio in Oslo, they discovered that they read each others thoughts!. The entire album was made in one day, most of the songs just one take. (And then they toured off and on for forty years. (Gary & Chick)
Gary Burton changed the vibraphone with the advent of the 'Burton grip' and his 4 mallet concept. When I watch him play, I wonder how many hours did he spend by himself practicing and developing his method. It is truly astounding.
Metheny took me to new horizons back in the 80’s with “As Wichita Falls, so Falls Wichita Falls”. Rick Beato has broadened those horizons 40 years later.
@@sgsoundvisuals And “Wichita Falls etc.” was my main cassette tape when I drove from Texas to Alaska in the summer of 1985. That and a Dan Fogelberg tape. Pretty similar stories.
The hole concert is with Dave Holland, Roy Haynes (you see the drums back), This is an Encore, at the final of conceret, Gary go up into Stage. Jazz Fest Berlin Germany 1990
Bravo Gary Burton great rendition. Metheny superb rhythm accompaniment and tasteful solo. Students of Mick Goodrick have always excelled in jazz and fusion.
Such a great performance and this is only one of how many times? Anyway; Metheny was never a student of Mick. But of course, and as I'm sure you know, they played together in Burton's band and they have had a close connection ever since and played together many times during the years.
I always find it strange that Mick GOODRICK never gets mentioned in these things. When PAT came into Gary's band, Mick was the guitarist. It was gracious of Mick to recognize PAT was a talented newcomer and make space for him.
there ya go... Question: Hi Pat -- I have two questions (1) - I've seen PMG 5 times in the past 12 years -- on each occasion, you wore a striped shirt. Is there any reason behind the striped shirt phenomenon or is it just a personal preference? If the reason is related to superstitions, PLEASE PLEASE keep wearing the shirts -- every performance I've attended has been fantastic! Pat’s Answer: the honest answer is; apathy. apathy in this case towards style and fashion. i just don't care about it. to me, i wish there was a uniform, like a janitor's uniform or something for what we do. i do see being a musician as a service industry - not unlike refrigirator repair or something. for me, by wearing essentially the same thing all the time, which is something that isn't really ever in style or out of style, it is one less thing i have to think about, so i can think more about what i should be thinking about.
Mick Goodrick - who Pat knew very well -never learned to drive because he didn't want to waste brain capacity which could be used for guitar playing. Hey, to each his own, right?
Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez do a wonderful job on this terrific Steve Swallow tune (correctly identified by Musserman) as has Burton on other occasions. It is named right under the clip, after all. This version is exciting but a little too fast and awfully busy.
I saw (HEARD) Gary and Pat in 1976 at a small college in New Hampshire in January, very cold and white everywhere outside. They pulled up in a Volkswagen Bus with Steve Swallow bug eyed, glued to the window. There were only about 30 of us in the audience. A fool was manning the spot light and directing the beam on the WRONG musician when another was soloing. Gary stopped abruptly and said, "I can't do this!" They were anxious to pack it up and leave. We pleaded with him. big time. He finally caved and they put on a stellar show. I can hear the yelling, "Sheldon get the fuck away from that light. Get down here!" he did. I was but 22 and only beginning to scratch the surface of "alternative" music. This band saved me from the pin headed disco scene, spineless pop and heavy metal. I had the good fortune of seeing Gary and Chick on a revolving stage about fifteen years later. I wore out a bunch of LPs and can still here friends and family, "Do you really like this?" No, I LOVE it. I remain grateful. The kicker is that Gary Burton does not have this concert on his career list of performances. I've always hoped to convey this memory with Mr. Burton. He probably has always wanted to forget it. I can only say, "THANK YOU!!!" #WWG1WGA

Daniel Freitas that’s good melodic play off of the melody line. A good way to stay “within” the chord to be a jazz solo. Plus they have similar ideas on the way a jazz solo should be. They think similarly.

wonderful interpretation by both. however I think that Gary should be less invasive during Pat's solo, too many notes and he is so loud, sometime less is better

"PMeth"? Does everyone have to be reduced to a first-name initial and a last-name first syllable? Is this what texting has reduced our cultural literacy to?
As huge respect i have to both musicians i must say that Gary plays almost to much during he comps Pat. Its sound almost like they both soloing ....there is no break in the piece, so ear could catch some rest....chain of 16 th and triplets. But anyway they played it together 100s of times and there is a certain raport betwen them.
so many amazing changes. what a great tune!
I'm here binging , because of the new Rick Beato interview with Pat Metheny
Me too. What a masterpiece.
Me too, stunning.

Same here. Incredible
Gary's playing is insane.

Pat is in the book of records for wearing the same shirt for 40 years
I could listen to Metheny comp all day. Kills me..
The pedal point he does from 1:39 - 1:51 is awesome...
The world’s greatest vibraphonist and guitarist playing together is just legendary. It would be even cooler if Chick were there, too.
Exactly!!!
And perhaps Steve Swallow
Gary is just tearing it up! What a master.
The only thing worth living for - fills me with JOY to see such masterful Ease and Grace 🙇🏻♀️💖

4 thumbs UP !! by 2 Great Musicians !
soooooo good
very nice.
Arrangement aside - I was impressed today with how similar this sounds in general modality melody and tempo to Pat's own song "Watercolors".
Absolutely first class
If I could play jazz vibes like that......shit I wouldn't even need a job. I'd be content with life haha
It's because virtuosity like this is commonly not regarded as a job that most virtuoso musicians get such shitty pay.
@Tim Watson Funny seeing you here.
Enough notes for about six great performances.
Genii right there
Pure magic
Gary Burton is such a fucking MONSTER.
This is actually the only clip I've seen of Pat doing a more normal finger style comp behind a soloist, a la Jim Hall.
Gary & Pat wuao!
When I see Metheny play, I always wonder how it would feel to have a genius mind like his to play infinite things on the guitar. Same with Ben Monder.
Pat talks about that notion in Rick Beato's interview with him (1h47m ruclips.net/video/QEgalcH_-b4/видео.html )
It’s like , what are they doing , it from a different world.
This music makes me want to tinkle.
Not only that I heard Pat say he practices this tune in all 12 keys!
4:54 Pat plays "The Lick". Almost. :)
God bless Steve Swallow
Burton is razer sharp - could also be a great drummer

Great playing, would have enjoyed it more if Gary would layout a bit in his solo, and while comping for Pat for that matter.

BazzTriton not really. Even bebop has spaces of silence once in a while.

When you find nice vocabulary, you may as well keep it. They played together more than once and Gary liked Pat's riff I guess.
How you find the courage to pick up the mallets after you witnessed this? Gary was too great for the instruments own good. He basically cleaned It up

Awesome!
The only thing that would make this better is to not read the critiques!
I love Pat and Gary, but I miss Chick so much
Where could I find the entire concert?
Cheers Beck19781 appreciated.
How many chords per minute does Metheny play?!?
As an amateur piano player it blows my mind how many options he seems to have with how much more limiting voicing is on guitar. Amazing!
Just great , one of my favorite Jazz Standard . but imho , it would'nt hurt to have less vibes notes during Pat's solo ...
Well, Gary's talents are mostly gone now due to thirty minutes of cardiac arrest. So, lay off.
