Always love the banjo part in this song. Shows what a true musician Peter is. I also like when Mike says: "Here we are, on our own," because that is what this album is all about, the love the put into it by them and only them.
This is so great. I really like it when Nez goes "Yeah!" The look on Peter and Micky after he does is priceless. Looks like they are really enjoying themselves. Good for them! Good for them! Bravo.
It may not matter too much that I'm a musician myself, but from where I'm sitting they're in time and in tune and sound great. They sound pretty much like the first-rate powerpop garage band they always were, playing with enthusiasm and conviction, on some of the loveliest pop songs of their era. Of all the 'legacy' tours of much-loved bands, I think this particular go-round from The Monkees is the most heartfelt and disarming. Love 'em. Also, saw M. Nesmith solo in London recently: Wonderful.
Thank you for posting and sharing your wonderful videos... I will not be going to any of the shows, so this is as close as I will get. I have posted them on my Monkees fb fan page and the fans love it.. I Love this song and glad to see Nez back.. Banjo Pete and Micky are awesome.. Monkees #1
wish I could attend the concert in Northern CA, but can't afford the tickets. Love these videos - thanks for posting. This is one of my all time favorite Monkees songs!
As someone who is devastatingly heart broken I cannot make it to either of the 12 shows.....especially to see Christian joining his pop! I cannot thank you enough for these vids!
I was at this Escondido concert. When the crowd heard the banjo intro and the Headquarters album above them the crowd went crazy, including me. It was a perfect version and was preformed beautifully.
Going to Buffalo myself!! Tempted to try Ohio the day before...I don't know...I might if I find out that they are varying the set lists a lot. Otherwise, I'll stick with just Buffalo. Totally thrilled to have a chance at something I thought I'd never see- Mike Nesmith back with The Monkees & playing those great songs he wrote & sang with them. I heard he's touring the U.S. some solo next year too. Love the solo albums & will go to that too!
This makes me happy and sad at the same time. I think I finally get what people say about it not being the Beatles without John Lennon... It's just not the Monkees without Davy Jones.
Check out the videos from the end of the tour in NJ and NYC. As the tour went on, Mike got more comfortable being back on stage and he started joking and improvising with Micky and Peter. His voice got stronger too. Also keep in mind that these were filmed on smart phones and the impression that they guys were off time may be due to where this person was versus the stage amps.
I was at this concert in Escondido and I about fell out of my chair when i heard the first note. I knew what it was and sang right along with Nesmith....On some versions taped here you can here my big mouth singing......lol.....
I think we can agree that having the 4 of them up there would be better than any combination of 3. I always felt there was a huge gap when Nez wasn't there, and I feel the same now when there's no David. The shows I saw in the UK in 97 were perfect..but life is rarely perfect
I must have been just a few seats away from you. The concert was one of the best experiences of my life. To hear Mike singing "Papa Gene's Blues" in concert with Micky and Peter was something I will always treasure. Thanks so much for posting this. It means a lot to me. God bless. (If you've got Papa Gene's on video, I'd love to see it!)
They're doing this tour because they wanted to do some sort of memorial concert for Davy, but didn't want it to be exclusive to either the east coast or the west coast.
Yes it was stolen from Red Rhodes guitar shop in 1968, there is a report someone tried to sell it on ebay about 4 years ago, but the seller took it off and disappeared. Mike would love to get it back
HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF THE NESMITH DOLENZ HARMONY SONGS . THIS IS THE BEST VERSION LIVE I HAVE SEEN. THE DUELING GRETSCH AND FIVE STRING BANJO. THEY WERE RIGHT ON, ON THIS NIGHT.
Based on the setlist, they have more than just a "let's make money while we can" thing going on this tour, so let 'em play. I didn't think they fell out of time and the singing is fine for any 70 year old.
This is GREAT!! With all due respect, Mike was not only my fave member of The Monkees, but I think he was also, by far, the best & most important member musically speaking. I also much prefer Mike as a stage presence- articulate, hilarious & engaging- while Davy was kind of show biz for me. After Mike I'd say Mickey was next most important in every way. I'd love to have had all 4, & RIP Davy but his songs were the weak point of any & every Monkees albums- though he did some great stuff too.
Agreed 100%. Obviously there were some fine Davy songs but songs like The Poster were weak, weak, weak. For me, Nez was the songwriting soul of the band and listening to this as I type, I'm thrilled to death that I'm going to be in Buffalo next weekend.
Actually Davey had said he would never be involved with any reunion involving Mike Nesmith after the debacle of Nesmith showing up and ditching them in UK. They had other deals which Mike then broke or withdrew from. Davey and Mike were PISSED at each other up until Davey's death (though they did settle some things behind the scenes). Mike decided to tour when, after the death of Davey, Mike felt bad and thought the original members should do an "memorial concert" for Davey- It became a tour.
Even if we contend Micky is wrong about the fact that Nez was planning to tour with the rest of them this year, whilst Davy was alive, I think Davy dying has simply made Nez aware of his own mortality. And several of his comments in the run up to these gigs seem to bear that out. He knows if he wants to get out and do things its now or never. If you'd told me 2 years ago he'd do a solo tour in the UK I'd have laughed you out of the room, but he did that too, and that has no connect to David imho
Does anyone know if that is the original Gretsch 12 string? I thought I had seen part of an interview during the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony where someone asked Michael about the guitar and I remember him saying that it had been stolen out of Red Rhodes' repair shop.
pr10s - it is not. His original 12 string was actually stolen. It is my understanding that he had this one made specifically for this tour and had a trusted guitar person in Cali take it up to customized perfection :)
According to Micky, Mike was up for touring with the other 3 this year, but Davy died before preparations were finalised. If you mean its a shame it couldn't have been all 4 there, I completely agree with you but it certainly wasn't the case that Mike wouldn't tour simply because Davy was alive.
I am so moved, thanks for these postings you wonderful fellow fans, everyone probubaly knows, but, just in case, there 2nd more of,3rd headquaters, and 4th pisces aquiarius outsold the beatles with what they had out those same years and charted higher, hmmmmmmmm.Just saying they were just as good, and that bullshit of them not playing there own instruments, every band uses trumpets, you know, all of the stuff they can when recording,so did they, from headquaters on,they did it all,Monkees and Beatles BEST!!
It's a shame they did this. It hurts to hear them sound like this. These guy's cant even stay in time. much less sing anymore. I still love the monkees, but let's go ahead and let a good thing die.
I'm a huge fan, but I don't buy it. Except for the 1997 UK tour, Nez refused to participate in any reunion. Davy dies and a a few months later, suddenly they are touring with dates and venues announced. How could it not be Davy?
Oh so you don't know about the '97 tour, the specials they did (Justus etc) and all the other times Mike avoided them and/or Davy? Make your claims but at least don't make ones that can be proved not true. Anyhoo, over the years Mike didn't tour. He did one off appearances in the US but he hasn't really done this stuff since the 70's so he wouldn't even tour with himself. Mike worked with them more than you seem to realise. Even a Christmas special where he was (spoiler) santa.

Glenn Rice The Monkees graduated from the , “garage band” sound so very long ago.
A great show... so glad I went!

oh, and this is wonderful. Great to see the 3 of them anchoring the song with the banjo/guitar/drums/vcls
lovely
AGH! GOING TO SEE THEM IN 7 DAYS. SO PUMPED AFTER SEEING THIS! THEY SOUND GREAT!
Just wonderfull and amazing :)
Thank you! I was there, too, and it was great. Loved the concert!
So cooooooooooool! I love it!
As someone who is devastatingly heart broken I cannot make it to either of the 12 shows.....especially to see Christian joining his pop! I cannot thank you enough for these vids!
Great stuff! Thanks for posting so those of us outside the USA can enjoy the 2012 tour as well!
Set list is awsome. Papa Nez is the man...BRILLIANT !!!
I WAS THERE TOO. LOVED THE CONCERT
I was at this Escondido concert. When the crowd heard the banjo intro and the Headquarters album above them the crowd went crazy, including me. It was a perfect version and was preformed beautifully.
Gracias por publicar! estoy muy lejos la única forma de verlos es en tu publicación. ¡Grandes siempre! RIP querido Davy.
Wow this is amazing. Thank you for posting.
this is so amazing thank you ,thank you, thank you !!! I can't attend any and this making me so happy :)
Thanks!
i was there is was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!
Peter looks so good in this for his age!! I hope I look this good!! He really rocks out that banjo!!!!!!!
Love it when Peter breaks out the banjo. On the album,, when he overlays the banjo, he owns that song in my opinion. Fantastic musician

I soo agree!
I'm torn over watching these. I'm gonna see the guys Saturday and don't want to spoil anything. But dang, it's just too good!
Thanks for posting, I love Nez!!
The original garage band song from the garage band album! Miss you, Davy, but long live The Thronkees! ♥♥♥
Captain Fantastic Thronkees? Three Monkees?

I've seen the guys numerous times in various combinations, but this is just so sad without Davy. It has no heart.
HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF THE NESMITH DOLENZ HARMONY SONGS . THIS IS THE BEST VERSION LIVE I HAVE SEEN. THE DUELING GRETSCH AND FIVE STRING BANJO. THEY WERE RIGHT ON, ON THIS NIGHT.
Equally on Headquarters. Peter does fantastic on back up vocals many times.
do you have more coverage of this concert? would love to see it, thanks!!!!!

What row is this? Just curious cause my husband and I are going to the Ohio show and we're in 3rd row so I'm hoping the view is this great!!! :)

What are you hearing besides the rest of us who are listening, posting? Nez does an awesome job singing! And their timing is impeccable.
I'm a huge fan, but I don't buy it. Except for the 1997 UK tour, Nez refused to participate in any reunion. Davy dies and a a few months later, suddenly they are touring with dates and venues announced. How could it not be Davy?

It's sort of hard for me to take your information seriously when you can't spell Davy's name right.
