This video essay discusses how both RUclips and 80s MTV changed the way we percieve video editing, both in broadcast and film.
This video (officially titled 'Art for Attention') was created as a major practical piece to accompany a dissertation I am writing for my university creative research project regarding MTV-Style Editing. (BA broadcast production [honours]). If you want to read this disseration (featuring input from a couple of big-name RUclipsrs...), then you can find it here: [link still pending after a year].
Much of this video is speculative and made to encourage discussion. Discuss!

Loved the video. You make some very salient points, and keep the narrative of your argument moving forward apace well. It's well scripted, and well performed.
The editing of the video is very crisp too - you've got some super interesting effects and transitions in play. It's clear you know your stuff from an editing standpoint. If I was being hyper-critical I'd say that you returned a little too often to the 'standing centre block colour background' a little too much - but then maybe that's just proving the point in the video, that attention is a fickle thing..
There were a couple points that slightly jarred with me - one an editing thing, the other a content thing.
    1) When you wound back the clock from 2021, it just so happened that it hit 1999 the second that you stopped talking. Made it seem like a deliberate edit and it was weird, I only realised a second later when it carried on going down. I think the fix there is to rewatch the finished product as obliviously as you can - without the eyes of a skilled editor, which you have, but with the eyes of a clueless watcher. You might catch some things that look strange to an untrained (as most are) eye.
    2) When you said 'returning to the original question' - honestly I had forgotten the exact wording/intent of your original question. This would be a great place to re-iterate, even just words on screen, what the question in; an opportunity to drive home your point even more.
Really great work though dude, a huge pleasure to watch. And you suit a beard.

Thanks very much Toby, quite a detailed response! Could I ask what you think about the subject itself? Do you have an opinion on modern day video editing - is it good, bad, a step forward or back?
Glad you liked the video, and your criticisms were valid. ;) I think I suit the beard too.

@@mrnathan.m4646 I tend to agree with you in practice - the editing styles that you see on RUclips are a force to themselves. Some of the best works have come from RUclipsrs just developing their styles; even early-days editors like Freddie Wong have pioneered an amalgamation between quick snappy media and cleverly-executed editing.
In principle, I tend to dislike this propensity to rely on the MTV-style flashiness of TikTok-esque videos. I think one thing that wasn't mentioned was the aid that these platforms give in creating such things - is it an impressive jump cut when you're just using a built-in effect to get it? Is it clever use of green-screen when a filter took care of it all for you?
But at the end of the day, I think your end point is valid - like it or loathe it, it is what it is. Whether forward or backward, it's a progression from the more traditional ways of editing, just like the long-cut gave way to the flash cut, or the single-camera gave way to multi-camera.
In my opinion, the best way for an editor or videographer to approach the change is to analyse its strengths, and put skill into it so that you're creating the best you can create. Attention-grabbing (especially in a way that doesn't leave your audience begrudging the time you grabbed) is definitely an art form. It extends to advertising and marketing as well as creative expression - if you can get someone's attention without then making them annoyed that you got their attention, then it's a success story.
Again, sorry for the lengthy reply. It's a slow work day :P

Impressive. I loved it. I've never really given a thought to how editing has developed or, indeed, if it has been for the better. Great research and content. I will like, share and watch again.

An excellent piece of work. 🙌
The delivery is excellent; professional yet personable.
The edit, both in terms of cut and audio, is top notch and the little touches which either link the edit to the content or place emphasis on a particular point are beautifully formalist....In a RUclips way.
This is both a perfect example of RUclips style ‘catchy’ content and a piece of art.
What more could anyone ask? Give the kid an ‘A’.

@@mrnathan.m4646 Hmm...Tough one. While I prefer a more traditionally paced, or ‘invisible’ editing style, especially when it comes to film. I think there is something to be said about the way RUclips (and TikTok!) are ultimately playing with and evolving film language. It’s both scary and exciting.
In my opinion, the democratisation of film and the tools of filmmaking is a good thing and tends to lead to progress and exciting content.
I think you could draw comparisons to what is happening right now and what happened with soviet montage and the french new wave.
People got access to new technology and didn’t feel hindered by prescribed rules, they experimented.
Frankly, RUclips is hammering Hollywood (and MTV) when it comes to engaging, captivating and bold content. You’re more likely to find the next Tom Green or Johnnie Knocksville on YT than on MTV.
190 million Joe Rogan fans can’t be wrong. 😀

its funny and I agree with you in a lot of ways. But what annoys me in that when i go on indie movie sets or indie movie screenings. everyone shoots so much angle and then they quick cut the whole movie so you're never bored and like this they can show off the craft. but that''s not quality. i mean quick cutting is not bad but its when you use it.

@@mrnathan.m4646 I think to an extent we have become a click-baity and bored society. This video is well made and constantly moving, and an instinctive part of me still wanted to skim simply because it was a youtube video. People are too quick to click on and off of something before letting it sink. The danger of online is that there is no guarantee that what you'll be watching is worth your while, therefore people feel like wanting to judge for themselves much quicker.

No dislike yet, how times have changed. What you are saying is interesting and provocative but you speak of editing as a single entity and not as an art itself. Artist take in the world. They are influenced by multiple factors such as news, politics, religion and as you said '' ''society'' ''. Could you say the same for large media editors trying to meet their deadline (or smaller editors like yourself). When do we (or you) sacrifice art for labour for deadlines. Ultimately when do we sacrifice art for selling out...
