The song comes from the film "With Fire and Sword", which is a film adaptation of the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz, a novelist awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The action of the novel takes place in the years 1648-1651, during the Khmelnytsky Uprising in Ukraine, which was then part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The remaining parts of the Trilogy are The Deluge and Pan Wołodyjowski. The novel intertwines the thread of Polish-Cossack fights with the love story of Jan Skrzetuski and Helena Kurcewiczówna, and Bohun, hopelessly in love with Helena, who is, of course, on the side of the Cossacks. I don't know about other countries, but in Poland the film is available on Netflix.
❤️
I recommend U watch this movie, there is a version with English subtitles ;)
The movie is based on a book by Henryk Sienkiewicz: "Ogniem i Mieczem" (With fire and Sword), and is one of the three books/movies (The Trilogy). The rest are: "Potop" (The Deluge) and "Pan Wołodyjowski" (Sir Wołodyjowski). Sienkiewcz wrote his books "Ku pokrzepieniu serc" (to comfort hearts) in the years 1884-1888, so in a time when Poland disappeared from the maps of Europe (from 1795 to 1918; 123years of partitions). Poland was divided between the Kingdom of Prussia, the Habsburg Monarchy (Austria), and the Russian Empire.
There are Ukrainian actors in the movie, and when the movie had its premiere many women very much liked Bohun (he isn't necessarily evil, just has an unrequited love for the "woman with 2 braids") :D Plus he was an idol to the boys :D
I personally prefer Jan Skrzetuski, so "the good guy".
Thank you so much
The main female role is played by Izabela Skorupco(Skorupko). She was a James Bond girl in GoldenEye.
Wow
you are beautiful, you stole my heart like in this song
Awwwww😂
thats my translation of the song :
O my falcon cloudy-eyed,
Ask about me mountains high,
Ask about me wisdom forests,
And set me free
O my crystal falcon sheer,
Ask about me nimble streams,
Ask about me flowers of fields
And set me free,
My beloved…
How m I to ask heavenly stars ?
They are jealoys of your dowery
Four coffers of love
And of kindliness of yours,
My beloved..
How to ask the other ladies ?
They will find my own heart in yours,
Although they know they'd not tell me,
I would not find you there,
O my falcon thunderer,
Ask about me fabled steppes,
Ask these fragrant herbal weeds,
And set me free,
Across kurgans burned to ashes,
Across hamlets all on fires,
I dont know sleep anymore measuring steppes
to find you,
My beloved,
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
He’ll chase off the Sun
Veiling the steppes,
I would not find you,
My beloved…
How am I to ask the Cossak?
Who went down with sickly love,
He would scorch the world from grief,
If he lost you,
Me…
If I lost you…
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
He’ll chase off the Sun
Veiling the steppes,
You would not find me, no!
We, the staring, we the listening,
So presently to the limits,
In the darkness of Cinema
Wipe away our tears,
secretly.
:)
Thank you so much
@@bbhairyfros1996 I know that there are some translations done via google translator but these are not enough poetic for me, so I did my own :D step by step, not using any translator or AI. And one of the choises I now regret was that I chose to use "weeds" but I think I should used "bushes" :) Thats actualy two words which both are right there. The Polish old word "burzan" means a bunch of mixed grasses and herbs growing on the steppes in big bushes. Its not only small grass or herb but a thick big bush of those. And now I think that I should use "bush" becouse this word means something taller than a small herb. And in todays world "weed" has this funny connotation with marijuana so this does not belong here in this song of old days. I also used the word "kurgans" which is popular in many Slavic languages for burial mounds, though its too "archeological" also, so maybe burial mounds or barrows - popular English words for kurgan would be better there, though the lenght of those words is not in tune with the lenght on this verse.
Lets see "Across kurgans burned to ashes" or "Acros burial mounds burned to ashes" - the second seems too long even though the words 'burial mounds' seem to be better here. Another version of this verse could be "Across burials burned to ashes" a bit like alliteration here :D and sounds good IMO but "burials" not exactly give us notion of mounds/hills/tumuli/kurgans. Its not any kind of "burial" but like a hill burial. Another older, Slavic word we got here was "chutor"/"chutory". I suppose this word has the same source as English word "hut" (cottage). I suppose "chutor" means a group of little wooden huts. So I explained this by "hamlets" which is I think the most similar structure. A small village of one clan/family, rather like big farm with many wooden buildings than a village. In the times the movie shows those hamlets were usualy fortified by pallisade. Esp on the east of Polish-Lithuanian kingodom - on those steppes the song tells of. In our tradition those Polish-Ukrainian-Russian areas - these steppes - are called "wild fields", When you hear "wild fields" told in Polish you know its about this age this movie shows - 16-18 century. It was something like "wild west" age for USA, but on the east of Europe :)
you must watch the movie " Ogniem i mieczem"

Ask the high mountains about me

And set me free
My falcon, my lucid one

And set me free

Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the stars in the skies?
They are envious of your dowry:
Of your four chests of love
And of your kindness
Edyta:
My beloved...
Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the other women?
Edyta:
They shall find my heart within you
Together:
And although they know, they won't tell
I will not find you
Edyta:
My thundering falcon
Ask the famed steppes about me
Ask those fragrant bents
And set me free
Mieczysław:
Through the ashen barrows
Through the khutors all in flames
I know no sleep anymore, measuring off the steppe
To find you
Edyta:
My beloved...
Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the moon?
He is in love with your eyes
He will drive the sun away and cover up the steppe
I will not find you
Edyta:
My beloved...
Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the Cossack?
Edyta:
Who has fallen sickly in love
Together:
In his grief he would set the whole world on fire
If he lost...
