Here are 3 Ukulele Right Hand Techniques to Spice Up Your Strumming & Playing
In this video I break down 3 right hand ukulele techniques and show how to combine them together. The 3 techniques are the fan strum, the chuck, and a combination of plucking and strumming. I think combining these techniques together is an intermediate to advanced ukulele technique. If you are learning ukulele, try it out and let me know how it goes!
Here are the chords for the progression I played:
Fmaj7 - Dm - Am - G6 (Play twice- on second go through move the G6 pattern up to 14th fret)
    Dm - Emad11** - C - Am,
    Dm - Emad11** - Csus4 - C
**(Emad 11 may sound difficult but it's you just make a Dm and move it up 2 frets)
The cherry picking technique I mentioned is demonstrated by Tobias Elof here:

Another way you can help support the channel is by purchasing something with one of these recommended Amazon affiliate links where I make a small percent of the purchase. These aren't random, they're all ukulele accessories I have tried and HIGHLY recommend.
To get and stay in tune, a clip-on tuner is a huge help: amzn.to/3vA3TBr
As far as string recommendations, there are a LOT of factors...but here's my quick and dirty recommendation that works a lot more often than not (and is what I personally use on my ukes):
If it's an entry level laminate wood ukulele, a set of Aquila nylguts will sound great:
    For a soprano: amzn.to/3zTe7zm
    For a concert: amzn.to/3Sp6EiT
    For a tenor: amzn.to/3Sl1swm
If it's a higher end solid wood uke, Martin fluorocarbons will sound amazing:
For a soprano or concert: amzn.to/3PXT8AW
    For a tenor: amzn.to/3BCumlv
This is a very high quality ukulele capo and the one I use: amzn.to/3Smlqqx
When changing strings, one of these string winder/cutters help make the job a lot easier:
    amzn.to/3OVsSFW
    Ukulele learning resources:
Ukulele for Dummies (great book PACKED with excellent instructions and songs to learn):
    amzn.to/3SlE0Po
Ukulele Aerobics (more of an intermediate level and above book, but the exercises are second to none):
    amzn.to/3zSzBMR
    Recommended ukuleles for beginners:
Enya Nova U concert size: amzn.to/3vx2oDR
Kala Satin Mahogany concert size: amzn.to/3bsZbP6
    Aklot Mahogany Concert: amzn.to/3Qf2o3n
This is a beautiful and solidly constructed wall hanger for putting your uke on display:
    amzn.to/3QcoyU3
If you live in a place that consistently gets drier than 40% humidity and you have a nice solid wood uke, you might want to use a humidifier. These are the two best I've tried:
    amzn.to/3bqHQGp
    amzn.to/3zTDoJS

Love how your videos get straight to the point, no fluffy filler stuff. Perfect speed for me too, thank you!

Erik Olsgaard Thanks! That’s been one of my goals from the beginning: I hate RUclips videos that waste the first 2 minutes doing a music intro, talking about the channel, telling you why you should subscribe, etc 😂

Super help man, thank you! I’ve been looking for an intermediate/advanced uke channel for forever but all I ever find is basic stuff. Keep em coming!

Thanks so much! Really appreciate the support and I'm thrilled to provide something valuable to help people learn! Sometimes it feels like nobody's watching but I have to remind myself it takes time to build it up.

This is great. I've been playing for a bit and can finally go smoothly between a bunch of chords and can play abunch of songs, but been pretty basic on my right hand. If you are looking for more ideas for contect. I think you could go into a little more in depth on the last technique. Thanks alot!

Thanks, for the feedback Eric! I actually just did my most recent video on exactly that: ruclips.net/video/BMm5r9cjI7Y/видео.html I broke that plucking and strumming down in much more detail. Lemme know if it’s more helpful!

#3 sounds great. Could you slow it down a bit? > 1:do this, 2: do this, 3: do this, 4: do this. ?

Thanks bob! I was thinking of doing a lesson showing each of these techniques in more detail as their own video. I was just trying to do a brief overview for this video. But basically #3 here is just alternating the thumb plucking and the pointer finger strumming up and down. Try to do it very slowly at first, pluck (down once), strum three times (down up down) and repeat. Hopefully that helps a little but I’ll do a more in depth technique vid for all of these later on 🤙

Hi Smitty! This was exactly what I've been looking for for the past few years, thank you!!!.
I have a question, I started writing songs with Ukulele but because of my lack of knowledge I don't know how to transpose chords. Do you know any tool I can use? I know I could have googled, but I wanted to ask you personally :)

    • @UkeWithSmitty
      @UkeWithSmitty  4 года назад +1

So glad you found the video helpful! And I appreciate the question. www.transposechords.com/ This is a good site for transposing the chords of a song. You just need to know what key the song is in and what key you want to change it to. BTW just watched your video "what we should do with that voice" and it's amazing! I think everyone who creates things experiences that and you captured it brilliantly! Anyways, thanks again and see you around!

@@UkeWithSmitty Thank you so much, that means a lot to me! If you don't mind, if I have a trouble with transposing can I ask you again? Also, the next video I am planning to make is about writing a song with Ukulele and I would be super honored if you want to be my guest appearance! :) I actually wanted to shoot you a message but I have no idea how on RUclips haha

Yeah, feel free to ask me any questions about the uke 😊 I’d be glad to do a guest appearance! how about you DM me on Instagram or reddit? My username on both is ukewithsmitty

your cherry picking reminds me of the Carter Scratch Phil Doleman talks about here ruclips.net/video/ZhAMRLTSyYk/видео.html but maybe you've found a better name for it by now

    • @UkeWithSmitty
      @UkeWithSmitty  Месяц назад

In retrospect, what I’m doing here is basically Carter picking or the Carter scratch. I just didn’t know the name of it at the time of making the video
