Uke with Smitty

Добавлен 18 апр 2020
I make ukulele tutorials, focusing primarily on teaching old-time, folk, bluegrass, Americana/roots, and Hawaiian music , but I do other genres too! I also emphasize learning to play by ear and jam along with others without being 100% tied to tabs and sheet music.
There’s lots of free stuff to check out on my website.

Santa Lucia (from the Ukulele Way book 4)

I’ve been working my way through The Ukulele Way again, this time with low G. I finished it the first time a couple years ago, but I’m still learning and re-learning lot the 2nd time around. Man, what an amazing course James Hill put together…
Ukulele Medley: Shortnin’ Bread & Acadian Lullaby

If you’ve ever done James Hill’s “The Ukulele Way” course, you’ll know these songs are some of the first songs you learn. Well, I added my own flavor in and put them together into a little medley. Can’t help but smile playing this new (to me) Koaloha! I love how it sounds and plays! 🤙 #theukuleleway #soloukulele #fingerstyleukulele
Georgia On My Mind- Solo Ukulele

This arrangement is from James Hill’s book “Ukulele Duets for One.” Although, it was arranged in high G, I played it in low G as written and it ended up sounding pretty good. Just have to make sure the open G string doesn’t boom/drone too loudly and overpower everything else…

Man, I’m having such a blast taking old-time/ folk/ Americana songs and arranging them for the ukulele. Shady Grove is one of those haunting minor melodies that stays with you for a while. #oldtime #ukulele #rootsmusic
Will the Circle be Unbroken - Ukulele arrangement

It’s taken me a while, but I think I’m finally starting to realize my “thing” is taking old-time, bluegrass, folk, Americana songs and adapting them for the ukulele. I usually end up playing all these tunes I learn on mandolin and guitar on the uke eventually! #ukulele #oldtime #carterfamily
Will the Circle be Unbroken - Carter Scratch Style Guitar Flatpicking
Просмотров 6816 месяцев назад
I haven’t really improved at the guitar in years other than playing chords as I’ve mostly been focusing on ukulele and now mandolin. So now I’ve been thinking about learning a little flatpicking on it…and, man, it’s a lot more for my brain to think about than 4 strings…lol
Recording King Dirty 30’s Mandolin Review

For the money, I haven’t played a better cheap mandolin than the Recording King Dirty 30’s A style mandolin. It has its defects but I think it makes a great starter mandolin or beater for driving around in your car or bringing outside without having to worry too much about it.
Bury Me Beneath the Willow - Ukulele Fingerstyle Arrangement

This classic old time/bluegrass song has been stuck in my head for a few days, so I figured out a little fingerstyle arrangement of it for the uke.

Lately I’ve been playing my new mandolin a lot… This got me interested in playing some old time Americana/bluegrass songs on the ukulele.

😊thanks so much - struggling with anything other than chords - this has been most helpful - good finger exercise as well. 👍
I just don't understand what is your right hand doing
Very nice arrangement. Do you have this tabbed out by chance?
You made that guy sing
Beautiful!
your cherry picking reminds me of the Carter Scratch Phil Doleman talks about here ruclips.net/video/ZhAMRLTSyYk/видео.html but maybe you've found a better name for it by now
In retrospect, what I’m doing here is basically Carter picking or the Carter scratch. I just didn’t know the name of it at the time of making the video
Hank sr on the ‘ukulele…gotta love that!
i dont wanna say i just started uke, because this is like my ninth time starting, but i want to play 12th street rag, so i need to be fricken insane at ukulele?
urs was so good
Thanks! I still need to make a tutorial for that one. It’s mostly a lot of really fast triplet strumming patterns. The actual chords and melody notes aren’t that difficult at all.
@@UkeWithSmitty thank you
Thanks for sharing.. sound good for the money.
Amei❤ no começo da uma leve cãibra na mão
I have got the same model mandolin. Here's what I have found... the bridge has to be set up very high on this mandolin the way that it is designed. The fret's going into the body are terribly off you put a straight edge on that thing and you will see I really had to work and do a fret job and level them and polish them to get it playing. The top is very thin it wants to flex some.
Lovely arrangement thanks for posting
Tanks for your comment; I'm glad you enjoyed it! The Ukulele Way has some really beautiful arrangements in it.
Carbon fiber ukuleles indestructible
Yep, they make great travel ukes! Since making this video I got a carbon fiber Enya Nova U and it stayed in my car through some extreme temperature and humidity shifts with no issue at all
This is wonderful
Thanks, bruh!
will you be sharing the tabs? :D
I’m guilty of starting learning songs & not finishing them 😫🙏🏽😂
Thanks for putting me on the right track ❤
Ok but I read that using plastic picks shred the nylon strings. A felt pick is the best alternative. I sometimes use just my fingers but a felt pick for strumming. 👍☮️🌞🎵🩵
I’ve always heard people ominously warn that, but I’ve never had any strings wear down from using a pick. Granted, I’m not using a pick on my strings that often (I probably only do it 10% of the time or so, mostly just to play a fast melody line) but I have never noticed even a tiny bit of the string wearing down from a pick! 👍
Nice! Thanks. Lovin’ your Kamaka uke. 👍☮️🌞🎵🩵
Thanks! Maybe one day I’ll get a Kamaka too! This one’s a Koaloha 🤙
Thank you. Great explanation
Thanks! So glad to hear it
One of my favourite tunes, and you certainly do it justice. Bravo!
Thanks, David! It is a great tune. I give credit to James Hill for making such a great arrangement of the song on the uke
Love the vibe broo!
Thank you. This song looks rather difficult to play... 😅
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, the book this is from (Ukulele duets for one by James Hill) has some of the most challenging arrangements I’ve ever played. But, man, do they sound great and help you improve your playing.
Good video Smitty! I admit im pretty much guilty of all of these. But slowly trying to start with music theory and playing up the neck but theres a lot to do. I wrote these in a positive way to keep in mind as rules to make progress. Useful video as usual!!
Thanks for the comment, Mariano! Yeah, flipping these into positive things that will HELP your ukulele journey is a great way to think about it. Happy playing!
it says it all, good luck!
I agree with you 100%, That's exactly what my teacher tells me. Thanks so much.
Glad to hear that! Thanks for the comment 👍
Excellent points - and a few that don't show up often in these types of lists!
Thanks! Glad you found a couple new/ different things in there
Thank you and I have made notes from what you said
Very glad to hear you found it useful!
Thanks Smitty.... yes very true
The sound is superb - it literally sings sweetly and with depth! Looks great as well. At some point in a serious player's journey, the need for an instrument that will allow them to reach their full potential becomes important. You've earned that. Play it in good health!
Hey Reddit mandolin friend! Thanks for such a lovely comment! I totally agree with you. From the first open chord I strummed on this thing, I felt I had an instrument that won’t hold me back at all. It plays so nicely and I’m super grateful to have it 👍
Not the dreaded Bb !
Or Eb, Ab….😫🙏🏽😁
That sounds awesome ‼️ I love 💗 playing my ukes. They are really fun. I have been hoping for a Hawaiian made tenor uke with a pickup for a long time. My best uke is a Martin concert. It sounds great. I have a Gretsch Tenor with built In tuner & pickup. It’s very nice to play and sounds good. 👍🏼☮️🌞
Thanks for the comment! Keep on playing those ukes…it’s so good for the soul
The sound is very beautiful, and you love the instrument (which is the main thing ;) I personally don't like the look of it, because the mango wood is kind of grey. But the story is beautiful and it sounds amazing. A very lovely instrument. And I enjoy listening to you playing it a lot!!
Thanks! Yeah I can see the look being divisive as it’s pretty quirky. I love that about it though! Glad you enjoy hearing my playing! Thanks for the comment 👍
THank you RUclips Algorithm, this sounded surprisingly good (as I don't like ukulele)
Haha great to hear! Yeah I hear you, I think a lot of people are sour on the ukulele until they hear what it can do. It has image issues and is often pushed as being exclusively for beginners strumming basic chords. I can play other instruments as well, but still love the tone and feel of the uke
Genius. Thank you so much - I have watched countless videos and none of them made any sense until yours. 🎉 Thank you!!
I'm so happy to hear you found it helpful! When I made this video I remember scanning through youtube for a good chucking instructional and they all seemed rushed so I tried to slow it dow and put as much detail as possible. Have fun chucking!
Nice, above my head but determined someday
You’ll get there if you keep practicing consistently! Little bitty step by step for a few years. 👍
@@UkeWithSmitty thanks,I am 78 and don’t of course I know if I will have a few years,ha. But I am trying to enjoy them. I must also admit you gave me the advice of using the video downloaded which has been great with my woodcarving and Uke songs
Marvellous playing once again!
Thanks again, Al! I think taking old time/bluegrass/americana tunes and porting them over to the uke is becoming my niche. Thinking of restarting a Patreon again with that focus. I got burned out last time because I didn’t have much of a specific focus. I’m also really bad at writing out complicated arrangements. Much better at making a simple TAB and teaching people how to play it by ear/improvise over the melody. Do you have any advice as someone who makes a living teaching the uke? For me it would be more of a side/supplementary income as I’m a full time high school teacher
That sounded really good!! Enjoyed it, keep the arrangements coming Smitty
Thanks for the comment! Really appreciate it. I’ve been thinking about restarting a Patreon and doing more lessons and tutorials again
@@UkeWithSmitty yes, your tutorials are detailed and useful!
Excellent arrangement, sounds great
Thanks! Appreciate that 🙏
How would you suggest starting picking like this on the uke? Anytime I try to introduce my forefinger and middle I get so caught up.
I’ve got a couple videos about different picking patterns. I think learning several patterns and getting those totally down with open strings, then slowly introducing chords, then learning to switch between chords, then working in a melody over those patterns is the best way to build up to it. If you aren’t used to using your right hand fingers for those specific fingerstyle patterns and then you also add in chord changes and learn a melody at the same time it might be information overload for your brain. Building up to it slowly is how I learned to play like this. A couple book resources I recommend that really helped me with this are Arpeggio Meditations by Daniel Ward and Ukulele Aerobics. Hope that helps and happy playing!
Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely give them a look. I appreciate the breakdown!
That G C E G tuning is the same orientation as the top 4 strings of the 5 string banjo, great for picking Bluegrass tunes... There's another open tuning you may like to try, tune down 1 step to F# B Eb G# - this allows you to play songs easier in the keys of E and B... So F becomes E and C becomes B, great for Blues - works better on low G string cause allows a great bass especially for country blues music...🎸🪕🎶 🎶
Very cool! I’ll have to try these out sometime
Hi, where can I find the tablature?
I just figured it out by ear. Still need to make a tab for it…
Good work. Thank you for sharing this soulful tune! ~~~ I write from Bristol - the birthplace of country music.
Thanks so much for the comment! Glad you enjoyed! Never been to Bristol but I really enjoyed going to the Smoky Mountains as a kid/teenager and everything else I saw in Tennessee was great.
You really should post a link to this video in Brad's forum under "Hawaiian Songs for 'Ukulele" if you haven't already. I'm sure that his other students would love to hear it as much as I did.
Okay thanks for the idea. Will do!
Nothing like Slack key. Sounds good Bro!
Cool Song Brother!
Nice Brother! I wouldn't have probably ever come to your channel if you hadn't replied. Mainly just because I just watched a short video. Mandolin. But after you replied, I thought I wonder what else is on that channel. After playing the uke this morning and being a fan of Bluegrass, slack key and other music, You channel actually looks pretty legit Brother! I am always looking for like minded musicians and your channel is a reflection of what I like. So you earned my subscription Brother!
Thanks, man! I appreciate the feedback and kind words!
