Tom Hanks is probably the only actor able to play Fred Rogers & I feel sorry for those too young to have experienced Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Fred Rogers proved that kindness is a strength not a weakness.

@Jabe Jikkonen There's been a lot of "dirt" that's been whispered the past year or so about Tom Hanks, which I won't repeat here but, there's a reason why he & Rita moved to Greece.

Fred Rogers was the next door neighbour many of us wanted to have. I was surprised to hear who Tom Hanks was playing next: the kind of man you wouldn't want in your neighbourhood or trust with your loose change: Colonel Tom Parker in the "Elvis" movie.

If he were here I'd like to think that he would say that he hopes the part that passed away was the part of us that made us feel as though we were alone, that we were unloved, and that we weren't special. Because his entire life's work was not only to make us feel included, loved, and special, but to show us how to do that for others.

I've said it before at another board, when my children were very young and I was trying to get 30 minutes to clean a bathroom or start a meal, I tried seseme street. My kids ignored it and continued their mayhem. But when Mr. Rogers came on, as soon as the music started playing, they were like zombies. Dropped everything, came down the stairs or out of the front room. They stood or sat as long as he was on. To this day I don't understand it. I also don't understand why I didn't go clean or cook but stood watching too.

  • @MarkelBeverley

Mr Rogers' way worked in a world of logical reasoning and common sense. Today, we care about people's feelings SO much that we discard the truth completely which is what Mr. Rogers was openly opposed to. During the Nam war he had segments on his show where he talked to the children and helped them understand what was going on and it was ok to be scared. But, he DID NOT hide the truth from them. THAT was real empathy and kindness.

Wow... I apologize to the rest of the world for all the Americans proudly displaying their lack of education. They seem to think that American English is the only English. I am from Texas - and even I know that not only is "learnt" a word - it is far more commonly used than "learned". Both are correct, but only the US & Canada tend to use learned. The rest of the English speaking world uses learnt. 😎

She an outstanding actress, but to me she looks much better without being all dolled up. She has massive "natural" beauty.

Mr. Rogers was a Presbyterian minister. Probably the best representative of Christianity I've ever seen.

Mr Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister. What everyone applauds in his demeanor is basically being a good Christian.

People applaud it because it so rare to see. I appreciate the fact that he taught by example, and never mentioned any god(s). 😎

My German-born grandma taught me to "be polite," rather than kind. However, I think both concepts will work out about the same. Your tone of voice and facial expressions will also carry over your kindness.
