See, this is my thing. I'm almost 19, and I can't express how much this music means to me. Dont' get me wrong, I like some of today's music, but bands like Journey, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc, that's where it's really at for me! Long Live Classic Rock!
The boy has blues in his soul! You can so hear it in this song and in most of the songs he sings. That is one of the things that sets him apart from all other vocalists in the Rock genre. His vocals just ooze with feeling. He doesn't just sing them...he feels them and it shines through in every perfectly enunciated word. I just LOVE listening to him sing. :)
Steve, I am still in love with you since I was a little girl. My family says I am crazy (lol) because when I watch a video of you, I still scream and dance my heart out :)
I've seen Steve many times, with and without Journey. He is absolute perfection live. Even better because he interacts with the audience when live. So much fun!!
just like a big rock show, there's 75 guys there: you just don't see them.(ideally). Same thing. You just didn't see the 18,000 times he sang badly before this point :) I've done it, so I assure you...
Ahhhh, what wonderful memories of my teenage years. Steve Perry was my first and only rock star crush and Journey the start of my love for classic rock.
@journel4life Excuse me??? Steve Perry is and always will be Journey. No one can replace him and Steve is what made Journey to begin with. This video doesn't do them justice. They were also excellent live!!!!
This is the very first time I ever saw them, I've loved Perry ever since, He'll always be, "The Voice", to me, but that wasn't the first thing I noticed about him; it was his eyes. It was like I got struck by lightning! I also agree with khrap, even though the comment was made three years ago.
I know this reply is 7 years too late, but I absolutely agree with you. He’s got such kindness and warmth to his eyes, and a bit of sadness too. They’re magentic.
I was 18 when they came out and in 1979 they were unstoppable- the music was one hit after another- my daughter is 22 and knows to put Steve Perry on if she sees I am stressed out- although the new singer that I heard live at the state fair in NY a few yrs back has the same tonality- he cannot hold the note so he sings it faster and does not have the passion-Steve Perry was amazing.Period.both he and Neal were amazing together-what a pair-had to be there!
I remember in '78 my girlfriend, her sister and I went to see Journey at the Music Hall in Cleveland.....We bought tickets at the ticket booth just walked in and sat down......The place was nowhere near sold out......It was incredible and i'll never forget it !!......After that tour Journey exploded.....Tickets were never that easy to get again !
You guys, I still have my ticket stub from 1977, and we rocked the house at memorial hall in Racine, WI! I seen Journey 4 times in a 4 year period back then same with STYX! They hit it big right around the same time but STYX started a little earlier! I suppose at a certain venue they could have made the audience sit still for recording reasons but never seen a venue set up like that! And Tyler, you sound like a spoiled little teenager!
Respect it for what it was, simply great for its time. This band went through more than most of us can imagine in the music industry. They paid their dues and fortunately succeeded eventually. I appreciate the old journey (first three albums) mostly due to the adventurous and unbounded song writing of the time. They became a hit machine later and with it came financial success, well deserved.
That was a great summer, they made 3 appearances in Chicago that summer, soldier field, Chicago feast on navy pier, and sound stage, I was able to see them all 3 tines again a great summer and even better performances
jouney such a unique singer. The man has a voice that a lot of people cannot compare against. Love this song ''i wanna be there in my city''. when the lights go down in the city''. Makes me think about living in newjersey such a while ago.
Back Then It wasnt About Makin Money It was fer the passion of music and makin people happy now its all about the money thats why most music sucks today Ya
I saw this lineup of Journey in Nashville in '77 and '78. The first time they were the opening act for Foreigner and the second time they were headlining with Thin Lizzy and Eddie Money. They recorded for a live album that night. I named my son Steven Perry Bryan, he is 17 years old now.
Journey was the most underrated band in the 70's! Look at all the footage from them back then! Everyone in the audience should have been rock n rol'n but they just sat there!
HOLY COW - Unbielievable I wish more people could see this video to see n Hear Perry's awesome ,DYNAMIC voice.. i mean C'mon who sings like that like its NOTHING ,damn that is just GREAT !!
I really wasn't all that familiar with Journey when I actually happened to stumble onto this very show on PBS one evening. My brother-in-law at the time had the album Evolution and he wet ahead and gave it to me. And so was the beginning of my long journey with Journey. People can complain about Perry this or Arnel that, but myself I want Neal to grow his hair back and keep rocking.
@CivilizedJerk I know what you mean my friend , you know your getting old when you tell your kids I remember when this song came out in 78 , however at least we can say in our time music was alive and had meaning not like the dead meaningless shit thats out now . I consider myself blessed that my life memories were built on music like this
I so agree! It just not the same without Steve Perry! Journey is the one and only best american rock band. Classic and timeless! I still get goose bumps when I hear him sing!
I'm a diehard fan of Journey's classic glory days with Steve Perry and I've watched the 1981 Houston "Escape Tour" concert DVD to death. The funny thing is how in just 3 short years, they went from wearing nice suits on stage to zebra striped T-shirts and ripped 80s jeans =) Amusing....
please don't compare AP to SP. SP made journey a house hold name and SP inspired many singers to sing like him such as AP. AP did say that 25 years ago when he had one of Journey's album, he wished one day he'll get a chance to sing one song with Journey and 25 years later he's living that dream of singing for Journey. AP says that theres only going to be one SP and he's just filling in for SP.
I was at that concert in Cleveland in 78 Same thing nobody was there, years later out in Ca couldn't beg borrow or steal a concert ticket................
Cristina Ruiz I was convinced women with musical taste were just a mythical creature, like a unicorn or some shit. Good to know there's 1 out there
pick up an instrument and learn it while you're still young and it's easy for you...
You simply have an old soul, my friend.😌
That's my girl....great taste in music!! You warm my heart!!
Good girl! 🤗
Crazy how good they sounded live. This is an old recording and it is crystal clear
Clear?... not sure what your hearing. tons of noise and the keys are to loud. This is not crystal clear by any means. Plus 2:11...
Yes!!Steve is a bluesman!!
A lot of singers could not do a show like this today.
And that, is what a real singer can do !!!!
The best alignment of journey of all time, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums and Rollie on keyboards
Steve, I am still in love with you since I was a little girl. My family says I am crazy (lol) because when I watch a video of you, I still scream and dance my heart out :)
They were the only group I've ever heard live that was as great or greater than how they sounded on an album..
vickie OAKES agreed
He was so perfect, I thought he was lip syncing at first
I've seen Steve many times, with and without Journey. He is absolute perfection live. Even better because he interacts with the audience when live. So much fun!!
Them and triump
Jethro Tull, ELP, Traffic, J Geils, Johnny Winter, to name a few.
SO GLAD I got to see Journey....with Steve Perry...the REAL Journey...3 times, 1979-1981. PRIMO!!!! ♥
good gawd what a belter...and he does it _so_ damn effortlessly! An amazing vocalist...three octaves in one run/lyric! 😰
just like a big rock show, there's 75 guys there: you just don't see them.(ideally). Same thing. You just didn't see the 18,000 times he sang badly before this point :) I've done it, so I assure you...
TightSqueeze Jam at FB
What did you just say?
One of the greatest bands of the 20th Century. Universe blessed them for a few years. I still love 'em!
JOURNEY TRULY WAS GREAT WITH STEVE PERRY!!! BRING HIM BACK AND PAY HIM WHATEVER BUT THEY WILL NEVER HAVE ANOTHER HIT WITHOUT HIM . HE IS THE KEY !!
NOBODY! has a voice like Steve Perry, he is one of a kind. Best male vocalist period. Why in the hell is journey not in the hall of fame?!
Oh my~ I am still lovin' Steve after all these years!
To bad that we can't go back to 1978....
This was so freakin' good... I saw Journey 3 times in the "70's...memories memories....good stuff..ignore the new "journey"

FaithfulForeverSP

man what a great voice! Journey was certainly the best band when they had Perry
Steve Perry & Journey, so Awesome!
What we have here is the greatest rock n roll singer of all time folks.
Certainly one the the most recognizable voice in the Modern R&R music. A fantastic voice signature and a very powerful band as well. I miss them.
I watched this on PBS back in the day! Absolutely fantastic! Perry, I mean!
THAT VOICE!!!😍😍😍😍😍
i used to watch soundstage all the time when i was in high school - i still remember watching this episode!!!
PS- nice CB interferrence at 2:13
I remember in '78 my girlfriend, her sister and I went to see Journey at the Music Hall in Cleveland.....We bought tickets at the ticket booth just walked in and sat down......The place was nowhere near sold out......It was incredible and i'll never forget it !!......After that tour Journey exploded.....Tickets were never that easy to get again !
trick is to drive out to Kansas or Kentucky where the market won't bear very high prices and there are way fewer people.
If you are watching this in 2022 you have great taste in music!🙌
ha ha ha. This guy Is great! Why do you think Journey looked for a guy that sings like him?
Always with the chills for this beautiful man ❤️
This man is so beautiful. ❤️❤️
Great Song! One of the greatest singers ever!
thank god we can look back when singers could sing. thank you steve perry!
His voice is insanely amazing... Thanks Mandrake (you know who you are) for showing me Journey!
You guys, I still have my ticket stub from 1977, and we rocked the house at memorial hall in Racine, WI! I seen Journey 4 times in a 4 year period back then same with STYX! 1975-1981 what time for music
Real Music
THE greatest singer of all time. PERIOD.
Not only do sing with your heart your moves are macknifasent!!!!!!
Respect it for what it was, simply great for its time. This band went through more than most of us can imagine in the music industry. They paid their dues and fortunately succeeded eventually. My heart just melted when Steve looked into the camera...he was born to sing❤❤❤
Steve Perry rules foreever
No doubt. One of the best singers ever!!!
That was a great summer, they made 3 appearances in Chicago that summer, soldier field, Chicago feast on navy pier, and sound stage, I was able to see them all 3 tines again a great summer and even better performances
Neal is sportin' a 'fro for the ages!! All time favorite band!!!!
My first ever concert, at the Seattle Center Arena, and their Infinity tour. Freaking Amazing still. Wish I still had that cool concert shirt.
My first and favorite Journey song. I fell in love with Steve Perry listening to this song. Love him.❤️❤️❤️
it would be great to see them back again...good tunes
jouney such a unique singer. The man has a voice that a lot of people cannot compare against. Love this song ''i wanna be there in my city''. when the lights go down in the city''. Makes me think about living in newjersey such a while ago.

STEVE PERRY!
the only thing i feel when i watch arnel is....man...i wish Steve would come back so they can be Journey again!
Steve IS the music of the late 70s early 80s.
The best era in music history.
Forget "open arms"... THIS is the best Journey song EVER!
This is how a band suppose to sound, not the crap we have now.
+Anitamaria Jones Back in 1978 people were saying this was the crap and orchestra music was the real deal
+hugh jadonga So incredibly not true. Great music was what unified us.
Yup
Journey was the most underrated band in the 70's! Look at all the footage from them back then! Everyone in the audience should have been rock n rol'n but they just sat there!
wow can't believe that this was live!
My hair was just like his in 1978! Beautiful song!
HOLY COW - Unbielievable I wish more people could see this video to see n Hear Perry's awesome ,DYNAMIC voice.. i mean C'mon who sings like that like its NOTHING ,damn that is just GREAT !!

What a voice!
Such wonderful memories of this band! Steve is adorable! :D
The hell he does!!! arnel wishes he could sing as great as Steve Perry!!!!
We all wish to sing like him I guess 😅😂
I don't think he ever wished to sing as Steve Perry. Lol curb your hate😂
@CivilizedJerk I know what you mean my friend , you know your getting old when you tell your kids I remember when this song came out in 78 , however at least we can say in our time music was alive and had meaning not like the dead meaningless shit thats out now . I consider myself blessed that my life memories were built on music like this
What a great moment !
God, what a voice...
take note Bieber...this a real voice...true and genuine...there will never be another Steve Perry
I so agree! It just not the same without Steve Perry! Journey is the one and only best american rock band. Classic and timeless! I still get goose bumps when I hear him sing!
Oh my! Takes me way back to junior year of high school. Have always been a Journey fan.❤️
My favorite song of theirs, though "Lovin' Touchin'...." ain't too bad. Very moving,
best band n Steve Perry amazing
Totally love this song!
Qué voz más hermosa. Mejor imposible ❤❤❤
one of the GREATEST singers of all time.
Yes, I think you are. My 12 year old can't understand why I am sooo in love with him.
This is talent, so listenable
I remember as a teenager, hearing Journey come on the radio, I would RUN across the house to turn it up as loud as it would go!!
By far, this was the best 'live' performance of Lights during their hay day. Steve kept it honest back then.
Nuff.
Brilliant singer, anytime of the day.
No. Thank YOU very much Steve. Absolutely fabulous.
Gregg Rolie will be performing a special up-close and personal show in Dallas on Sept 30 at Poor David's Pub.
The absolute prime of Journey!!!!!!
Love Steve "the voice " Perry 😍💕
My favorite Journey's song
Neal's rocking the afro and mustache combo. Nice!!!!!!!!!
It's funny, but in steve Perry's voice, I can hear a Sam Cooke influence.
ayyy hermoso a más no poder me fascinaaaaa!

Amazing singer and song. Steve is very cute too.

please don't compare AP to SP. SP made journey a house hold name and SP inspired many singers to sing like him such as AP.
